and is a BANGER

they going full eletronic on this one
oh, that's true isn't it. T_T. Maybe I'll try the fantasy total war haha
yeah, the footage looked really good, I hope it isn't too hard to run
Moment of silence for the Half Life community, which expended all of their hopium reserves tonight. I'm sure they'll have their stocks replenished by next year's Game Awards, though.
'Twas quite the sight to see E33 sweep so completely. I'm not particularly familiar with the game, but the opinions I've heard have been exceedingly positive. I'm happy for Sandfall; it must be rather surreal to see your debut game be received so well.
They broke so many records with E33
Even the literal President of France called them out
E34 when
E32 as it were
Moment of silence for the Half Life community, which expended all of their hopium reserves tonight. I'm sure they'll have their stocks replenished by next year's Game Awards, though.
IDK if I can relate with waiting for a game at an award show and it not showing up, never happened to me, hard to put myself in their shoes
(this is an advanced joke)
I’m sure we will see pod racing in the summer
My guy that is a fucking PVC pipe
Half-Life 3 was the friends we made along the way
That guy went through like six different instruments
@green fulcrum that’s why SEGA was there. To show total war
I was hopeful for a new sonic game. But maybe next time
No, that was a PVC pipe.
Then that man picked it up, and it metamorphosed into an instrument of artistic beauty.
...actually, I suppose it's still a PVC pipe. But now it's an artistic one.
Booooooo...
The end of the Hololive stream lol
I mean, it did look real good
I'm sure it does, and I'm happy for the Total War fans, but I wanted Sonic.
Even the man himself Takashi Iizuka was there
So how did y'all like the Clair Obscur Awards 2025
oui
I love RPG award
As a 🇫🇷 , my pride cannot be contained
Wait you are French?
I still do not like that Clair Obscur won RPG award, but other side is KCD2 and Vavra. I am waiting Vavra's post about Clair Obscur
How their game isn't RPG at all
What?
And how they did nothing to deserve this award
Vavra did recently a post about Obsidian and TOW2 how Obsidian did 0 progress in 15 yaers
Who?
French and American
One of founders of studio which did both Kingdom Come Deliverance
Jennifer English's got a mad resume. Elden Ring, Baldur's Gate 3, E33. All GOTYs
no words from miyazaki, bioware, and moonstudio while the winners already predictable, i give this year goty awards 33/10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIQSEq6tEVs considering the situation, I believe we all need a bit of a soundtrack going on here
National Anthem of France - "La Marseillaise" (The Marseillaise)

No new fallout or elder scrolls is honestly making me scream
you can always play more Starfield
I remember when Skyrim on switch 2 was a meme, Skyrim on PS5. Every single fucking release since the original release, VR, SE, it’s ridiculous
I’m not even a committed player and I have two different Skyrims and might get a third
But that’s why it happens
I don't think I have any Skyrims
though with how many there are it wouldn't surprise me if it snuck into a bundle somewhere
It’s been released 15 times and is available on 9 different platforms
Bethesda saw how poorly Starfield did and so went back to Ol' Reliable, lol
I am curious how they'll address that, despite not playing any of their games
Somehow, the Switch 2 version they just dropped reportedly doesn’t run very well
In other game news, look what showed up in the mail today.
Bless you, CAH team.
I love your shenanigans.
I ran out of "you fell for it award" stickers to give towards the hopium folks, so many expected HL3 despite obvious info saying the opposite in TGA.
There’s a chance I’ll be retired by the time the next fallout game comes out
The half life subreddit has a group trying to turn it into a muppet subreddit now
now I'm imagining Bethesda letting Larian make a Fallout game like that one time they let Obsidian make one
that'd be a galaxy brain business move
Fallout CRPG
you mean, Fallout 1?
Yes, but new
everything new is old again, or something
fair enough
Yeah, I don’t get why anyone expected HL3
Because Valve's been hinting at something, and a well-known and trustworthy leaker and industry reporter has said that something Half-Life related is in the works.
Personally I was hoping for it, but knew it realistically wasn't coming this year.
There's always next year.
Larian would not be so cowardly, lol
Well, I’m glad that I can still feel so excited about something that I start literally screaming. The KotOR sequel announcement caught me absolutely by surprise
Haven’t been that hyped about something since Metroid Dread was announced
That was me last year with Okami
Peach Hack was just arriving home late when that happened and she thought I was mortally wounded or something

im kind of obsessed with the vibes of this Divinity trailer
It is very very good
Man, some of my other chats are just full of people who apparently have literally never heard of E33 and I'm just like... how.
One of them even thought it was some AAA game and thus they didn't care
"Oh no wonder, I only do indies"
Bitch, pls
The Ace Combat subreddit is wild right now lol. Coming up to TGA are meme posts about the hopium for a new AC and then the flood of "Oh shit our hope worked" posts
Ace Combat was a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one
I almost forgive Bamco for their Tales bullshittery this year
A short synopsis of the AC8 plot on the game website
Also a typo
on this shop
This is a break from previous AC games where you forge your legend throughout the campaign and become known as a great ace. In this one, because of dwindling hope people think you're that ace from the very beginning and you have to live up to their expectations.
typo or secret super capitalism

[...] I can't stop thinking about that meme of someone going ''gaming isn't fun anymore starter pack'' and it shows their Steam library with just COD MWII, FIFA 23, GTA V, CS2 and a pre-ordered Fallout 76
this will remain the default presumption until people stop unironically doing it
Yep
see, i'm not sure whether to
or
because I play 76 a little bit.
I would play CS2 if the game wasn't just a lootbox simulator in terms of mtx lol.
CSS was some of the best fun I had in FPS games, it's a shame CSGO and CS2 went down the TF2 hats route.
to be clear, that joke is not saying any of those games are bad
the joke is about people who haven't heard of any other games
ooooh i see
the movie equivalent would be "movies are all boring now" and when you ask what they watched this year the answer is just 2 superhero blockbusters and they've never heard of Flow and so on
right right, barely even looking at that point.
I know for anime there is more anime being made each season then most people can reasonably watch during the season haha. I'm not a huge movie buff, but I can imagine just branching out of cinema releases to international ones would open up a swathe of cinema that could be great for ones tastes.
yeah, I've had phases in the past where I'd watch older films or critically acclaimed obscure films or international hits and it was always refreshing
even when it was "just" another country's low-brow popcorn blockbuster, that's fascinating in its own way
I remember watching a very small movie about... "Bread of Happiness" at Melbourne international film festival a long time ago. It was really well made, and like, wasn't telling a huge story or needed a huge budget, but used what it had to tell a solid story
A cafe in the middle of the great outdoors serves delicious bread and coffee to people with pain in their hearts. A humanistic drama that is sure to warm one's heart.
“Bread of Happiness” is a part of the JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL ONLINE 2022, starting on February 14 for 2 weeks. 20 Japanese films with 11 to 15 subtitles will be streamed for F...
It's a 2012 film, lots of heart.
Waking up to Act Combat 8 might be the best feeling

Developed by Arcanaut Studios in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Knights of the Old Republic.

Still very

Guess we'll learn more about this game in five years
Casey Hudson founded this new studio of his in July 2025. They’re starting from scratch on this project and hiring for all positions right now.
Also this
that PvP hero shooter was funny
Whats the TLDR from the game awards?
it's like 4 hours of advertising.. hmm, TLDR French game-devs sweep
"kinda boring" from what ive seen
my expectations have been exactly met
My expectations were exceeded
My expectations were subverted
no half life 3?
From Casey Hudson (who did Mass Effect and KotOR I) at his new studio
ooooooh
Not BioWare
ok thats interesting
Yep yep
Had me screaming
Hyped for it, but we probably wont hear from it in like five years
The studio was just established in July
I wonder how much longer it will take until every competent game dev "just" founds their own studio to get away from the insanity and actually make a game
tuesday
Presentation was pretty mid imo , but Ace combat 8 and Mega man 12 are amazing
Saros (new game from the studio that made Returnal) had a nice gameplay trailer
New Control game
New Divinity game
Two new Tomb Raider games (original remake and new entry)
Diablo 4 expansion
Pragmata release date and gameplay trailer
Gang of Dragon, from the Yakuza franchise
Warlock, a DnD game
Ace Combat 8
I feel bad for the MK World devs...they were booed and flipped off at the Awards
Bunch more but that’s what I remember
…they were?? Why?
toxic people being toxic just because "WE HATE NINTENDO REEEEEEEEEE LOWER THE PRICE"
Total war Warhammer was totally unexpected but welcomed
oooh divinity
Ugh, hate those idiots
new Control game? neat, I figured there's no way they just stop at AW2
MK World is not my favorite game, and both it and Nintendo have their flaws, but to boo the people that made the thing and then defile their names? Pitiful
I enjoyed World and I’m glad they explored fresh ideas
Maybe not my favorite, but still pretty good

With Max Payne remake being in development too , remedy really keeps on giving
Reminds me , i grabbed divinity games on a sale but didn't play it yet , gotta fix that now i suppose
Jesus F-ing Christ the hate for MK World/Nintendo is vile. Every video of the stream I see has thousands of comments spitting vile on it.
Every gaming chat I’m in has been relentlessly shitting on it since it came out
And Nintendo in general
It’s asinine
Nintendo makes poor choices, yes, but at the end of the day they're human
Like a passionate team made MK World
And I don’t get it. People’s expectations and demands are wildly unrealistic
If Kirby had been nominated they'd be drooling over it saying it's the best game ever made, and then they would say "except it was made by Nintendo"
I’ve had to explain multiple times this year that people who actually give a fuck make these games. Artists, programmers, composers, etc
But for some reason there’s this new culture of not caring unless you’re a solo indie developer
Or even outright advocating for piracy of everything except indie games
while being increasingly reductive about this AAA v indie dichotomy, when the reality is more like a broad spectrum
“Wow these game companies need unions so that they don’t get laid off!”
Those same people: “fuck everyone who worked on these games I hope they become financially ruined :3”
Nintendo especially, when they develop games, often has the most indie-like mindset of the enormous studios
Like, I’m starting to suspect that they think everyone listed in the credits is a billionaire or something
People can blame Nintendo for their anti consumer moments but like.... actively booing developers who flew here and get an award for their hard work is downright disrespectful and spiteful
Also pretty much none of those people have a say in the business decisions
Further, the general hot takes about Nintendo are downright ignorant.
Yeah and its sad to see this tendency, where the blame for business decision and pricing is being put on developers
I’m getting particularly exhausted by the whole “wow, everything is way overpriced!” spiel.
Accounting for inflation, Nintendo games are still much cheaper now than they were in the 90s.
Like recently Nightdive (studio that remasters old fps games) release an updated version of their Blood remaster....and it sells for 30 dollars and instead of blaming atari (who not only owns both ND and Blood ip who is also forbids releasing more than few patches on their games) people started blaming remaster developers for being "greedy" and "selling same thing third time"
yeah that's been frustrating from the moment the Switch 2 price was announced
And the Switch 2 isn’t meaningfully more expensive than the Switch 1, after inflation
I get being disappointed that the price is higher than you might've wanted, but unless you literally believe inflation is a conspiracy by Big Mario, it's obviously unrealistic to expect this to never happen
Plus.....nobody forces them to buy games day one , full price only
To be fair, Nintendo games rarely go on sale and rarely drop in price
it's extra weird when the motivation seems to involve some genuine financial hardship, because then... if you have limited money, why are you spending any of it on luxury entertainment devices like gaming consoles
I’m seriously running out of patience with that crowd at this stage
People didn't seem to complain that the PS5 was 500-700...
Nope
That’s another one of many reasons why I don’t consider that nonsense a legitimate complaint
It’s toxic bandwagoning
(There’s a lot of destructively toxic bandwagoning on the internet these days, moreso than usual IMO
)
I think it's been rising for a long time, and not just on the internet
Hm, fair point
only thing most of us can do is avoid the spaces which encourage it
Especially considering that if they wanted just something to play they could have buy some old cheap pc and have a huge library of indie games , old classics and light emulation but they prefer to buy console that is way out of their financial range and then complain that its and games for it are too expensive
Emulation does require some technical know-how
mm-hmm, I'm pretty sure I could happily game for the rest of my life without spending a dime by emulating older games no one cares if you pirate
it does take some setup effort, but at least according to my personal experiences using the things, the emulators have gotten good enough that it's no longer a barrier to entry, just setup effort
Well yes , but i specifically said light emulation, of course ps 2,3 , Dreamcast can be too hard and demanding to the system but like , ps 1 and nes , snes , genesis emulators are pretty easy to set up
That’s fair. I was immediately thinking of current gen emulation, but yeah, retro emulation is dead simple
GBA and DS were also solid for me
basically everything I tried to play in Retroarch seemed to work after jumping through one or two hoops to plug the illegal thing into the legal thing
only serious issues I had were when motion controls showed up
RetroArch is pretty awesome, yeah. I’m not a fan of its front end GUI design, but it is a nicely put together package
Usually i think they can be set up or turned off entirely but....if you feeling brave , you can try binding it to your phone but results vary
I'm not gonna complain about a GUI that I can find what I need in
Heh fair enough
It’s just a nitpick on my part
I’m sure it can be customized in some way
in particular RetroArch's GUI feels to me like a rare bloat-free program: no random ignored inputs, or inconsistent delays, or things popping up in front of my cursor to cause a misclick, or egregiously wasted space, or inexplicably forgetting my settings the next day
aesthetically, yeah, it's an unfamiliar style, but at least for me not in any unpleasant sense
(granted, the fact that the above list is rare is kinda pathetic, but here we are)
Jesus fucking Christ you weren't kidding about the imagery
Pleasebeturnbasedpleasebeturnbasedpleasebeturnbased...
Retroarch has to be the only emulator where I can't
absolutley disgusting
wishlists it
Oh it’s not just me. Yeahhhh… dropped inputs or even mouse cursor lag in modern operating systems in 2025 should not even be thinkable
I guess you're doing more involved configuration than me; I know RetroArch doesn't/can't expose every setting of the underlying emulators, especially if the underlying emu has had updates that nobody bothered to repackage for RA yet
Both Apple and Microsoft need to stop for one hecking second and have another Snow Leopard/Windows 7 optimization cycle
hyper-generic software like web browsers usually gets a pass because it's not the browser's fault that some websites weigh a metric ton
but indeed I do not understand why the OS itself can't just ignore one app being slow and let cursor movement and other apps continue running smoothly while we wait
in practice I've been taught to start up all 10+ apps I might need for the day, wait for all of their startup sequences to resolve, and only then actually attempt to do anything with any of them
Yep. But uh… Windows on my machines has been exhibiting many moments where the mouse was lagging for unclear reasons. Just, why.
And iOS 26 has issues with the typing cursor causing the whole keyboard and typing system in general to lock up for a few seconds if I happen to tap in an active input field to relocate the cursor to somewhere and fix a typo.
I could rant about this with various examples and different performance problems for ages… but yeah, Windows 11 and the current macOS and iOS OSs all have terrible terrible optimization problems
The reason I can't find these options is it exposes too much but categorizes it in a way that I can't intuitively navigate to what I want.
On windows it seems independent of what I have running, in the foreground and background
for the set of apps I run at my day job, there's a handful of slow ones that are clearly responsible for the worst of it when I do attempt to do real work right away in the fast apps
At least those situations make sense. But should individual applications necessarily cause the rest of the system to lock up while waiting on the one application to “stabilize”? I’m not particularly well versed in operating system design, but I would imagine the scheduler would prevent that from happening?
it really shouldn't
the one concrete thing I can point to is that my "wait for everything" habit is not just about glitchy performance, but also focus stealing for me, and that falls firmly into "it's not a bug it's a feature" territory you could debate endlessly
Ah yes, focus stealing is exceedingly rampant too
it would not surprise me if a lot of these other issues boil down to apps having powers they should not, because if the OSes try to punish bad apps for being bad, it tends to backfire in other ways
see also kernel-level AC and AV
Yep yep
yet another factor is that whenever Windows itself tries to diagnose a perf problem by explicitly blaming a specific process/app, we never believe it
(or we do but conclude "that one needs to be expensive")
I'll probably never have the expertise to tell if those judgements are correct, but I'm already way above average on this topic, so I doubt the average user is trusting it more than me
fate of the republic looks promising, in the hand of casey hudson
divinity gonna be larger than BG3? damn im cooked
As am I, lol
I just hope it's a turn-based CRPG
Under their name they have 3 genres right?
Divinity which was a real time with pause.
Divinity original sin which was turn based
Divinity Dragon Commander which was RTS mixed in with flight simulator kinda?
So, if we go by the naming convention and the mainline divinity was a real time with pause, they might be doing that?
Of course there is also the fact that all their biggest success were turn based so if they are doing another mainline called Divinity they might bring that to their mainline
Dating sim too!
Dating sim is most important, then the strategy lair, then the flight sim
If we want to be picky, you can date in BG3 too

I am not sure if you can romance the characters in Original Sin
Yeah, which makes Baldur's Gate 3 Dragon Commander 2
lol
The salt on Twitter
"no game should win 9/10/11 awards, ever" "there should be a limit so other games get visibility "
Just listened to the orchestra for GOTY. As expected, it's fantastic, but it doesn't quite beat 2023's still. 2023's orchestra was just on a whole different level. That opening part with Alan Wake 2 is just...
And then the absolutely gorgeous transition into Baldur's Gate 3, it just sends me into orbit every time.
"Why did it win art direction?!?" My man. Sit down.
Some folk seeing some guy on the same row (but opposite of the aisle) of Kojima leaving once e33 got goty and are saying it's Kojima. Kojima catching strays
Aaaand then some of the hate turns extremely rule 2-y, stopping browsing Twitter for now
Who else HATES Geoff Keighley and his STUPID Lame Awards??

depends on the year artiks, but not this year
from what i remember, star wars fate of republic, grandsons of the forest (the forest 3), new divinity game with mad insane trailer presentation, and how expedition 33 yoinked almost all the trophy awards
dont remember the rest mate
star wars racing game from burnout/nfs devs
new old republic game that will totally release someday
control sequel
ontos, game from soma devs
ACE COMBAT 8
total war 40k
two tomb raider games
divinity 3 too
idr anything notable other than that as far as new games
there was a new trailer for exodus, game by some ex mass effect devs
nothing that appeals to me then
fair few things that caught my eye and ac8 had me screaming
huge day for me and only me
oh there was also a new mega man game that they hyped up more than anything else
Mega Man Legends 3?
Moist
Retroarch has one of the worst UIs I've seen
I don't think anyone disagrees to be fair 😛
RetroArch is the only way to play some systems on some platforms, unfortunately
for example, I haven't seen any up-to-date N64 emulator that has a macOS version outside of what RetroArch provides
slightly annoys me it comes w a ton of cores installed by default when i maybe only wanna play like 3 consoles but that's all i got
the iOS version needs to have cores preinstalled, because they can't be downloaded at runtime per App Store policy
I think this also applies to the Steam version where they are DLCs, but I think you can uncheck them?
A few wuxia games too
Geoff said that the pipe flute guy used he made himself
ah yeah it's the dlc
but i think i had to get flycast in retroarch itself iirc so i guess steam only downloaded like half or something?
though theyre all in my library automatically
that was the issue
I'm so excited for Divinity
I just saw this, Game Pass Ultimate can be had for €1 for 1 month if you haven't had an active subscription recently. Remember to cancel immediately after ordering so you aren't charged the much higher price later on
Is there a link for details? Last sub was 6 .months ago...
check the Game Pass homepage while logged in to your account, then try to subscribe to Game Pass Ultimate and see the price you're presented with
I did it successfully on my end, my trial expired in March 2025
Ah, June for me. Might need to wait until jan
Your first mistake was even being on Twitter in the first place
your second mistake was expecting any sort of nuanced or productive conversation happening on any social media right after a big event
Apparently it's a hot take to say that Hades should've won best soundtrack? I still think it should have... but I understand E33 is so much bigger than Hades 2 and the style of soundtrack from that game is much more impressive to people, it's obviously outstanding but I guess I appreciate a more unique soundtrack over a technically better soundtrack
I did come across a few posts even at the time last night of people being really upset about the sw33p and I honestly don't know what they were expecting, to not give E33 the awards just because?
it would feel incredibly dishonest
I'm pretty bummed that Silent Hill F got absolutely nothing but unfortunately it just came out the 'wrong' year
On any other year, Silent Hill F would've won best narrative and best performance, Hinako's VA did an incredible job
I think that there are 3 or 4 awards that I think E33 has on lock and soundtrack is one of them
Like, Sountrack, narrative, and best pefrormance IMO are really hard to argue to hand out to someone else.
All the others have a lot more wiggle room
And to be clear, any other year Hades 2 or Silksong would have battled it out for the Soundtrack one
E33 does so much with its OST, and it's so varied, I do feel like that one has to go to them that year, even though there are other desrving games in the category
I know it's a fantastic soundtrack, I do know that, I didn't get too far into that game but I got far enough to hear some tracks and they're obviously super good and on a technical level really well done, I guess I just appreciate Hades 2 having a more unique and diverse sound and being good over an orchestral soundtrack I feel like I hear on everything is all, but I know that there's probably a strong connection between the ost and story moments that made people choose E33 over Hades
that's my reasoning anyway
it is very hard to compare this sort of thing without fully completing both games
especially when "variety" is explicitly being cited by... wait, both of you?
Hades 2 is pretty varied too to be fair, I don't disagree with that
maybe the E33 ost gets more varied later on and I didn't hear any of it
I honestly didn't get too far into it probably
I stopped right about where || Charlie Cox's character dies and they all jump off the island ||
that's as far as I got
Could also be that it's definitely a continuation of Hades one so the sound didn't feel as fresh, even though it is obviously exceptional
yeah, you really have to at least finish act 2 to begin to get a sense of what the real scope of E33 is
it's really funny to me how despite how big this game is, and despite being a regular watcher of two streamers who played this game in its entirety and can't stop gushing about it, I somehow still didn't get spoiled and I know absolutely nothing about what this is about
I wasn't even fully tuned in for the few streams of this game I watched so even the stuff I already watched which is most of act 1 I kinda remember
tbh I would rate SHf and E33 pretty close on narrative, and I do wonder if SHf's story requiring multiple playthroughs causes problems here
I do want to play that one eventually, time is not plentiful sadly
with both I have only really minor nits
e.g. SHf I think could've had more skips for the parts that are the same on NG+, and E33 I think could've done more with some of the non-main characters
Agreed
(on stream I may have sounded upset at E33's ending choices, and ||wanted another ending which doesn't exist||, but that was almost certainly an intended reaction / effectively a compliment)
Oh yeah
I mean what you mentioned about it would be a big problem in a lot of narratives, in fact one could argue it's the main flaw in the Hobbit movies. the reason it's just amount to a nitpick in this one is that this story is a miracle it even works as well as it does
It shouldn't by all accounts, once you stop and dissect it, but they made it work purely by the strenght of the writing and the delivery of the scenes
[major spoilers] I've heard a lot about E33, before playing it myself, but the only real spoilers I knew of were ||charlie cox dying, but NOT anything about the whole world being a painting||
Well, I think the multiple playthroughs is exactly what makes Silent Hill f take the narrative vote for me, it's exactly the type of inventive storytelling you can only really do in a videogame and that's why videogames are so cool!
the only drawback really was that I felt like it was one extra playthrough too many, and some sections that they admittedly did patch out later on were super tedious on repeat playthroughs, which thankfully they realized after release
When tf are they gonna remake silent hill 4 the room lol
Peak game
probably if and when it becomes profitable to use remakes to redeem an unpopular entry rather than double-dip on an already popular one
whether that will ever happen I am not sure
Peak concepts, the way it is, SH4 is the worst game of the original ones easily
Conceptually? Yes, it's very interesting and I really like it
same with RE Code Veronica; the island is almost as great an RE map as the Spencer mansion was, but then there's so much wrong with antarctica (including softlocks!) it drags CV as a whole down to "one of the weakest" REs
I mean Konami is getting into remakes lately, it's no impossible we'll see something done with that eventually

Last night's biggest surprise was Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, led by Casey Hudson, who directed KOTOR (and Anthem). Exciting news for lots of people... but Lucasfilm says the studio was founded this year, which means that 2030 is an *optimistic* guess. Maybe it'll be a PlayStation 7 game

Yeah, I think I mentioned this? Might've been elsewhere. The studio was founded in July 2025. Like the other Star Wars projects they announced that they were doing it and they're hiring to build it
But yeah, it'll be like five years before we hear from it again
oh mb sorry
No worries
you were just excited for it, didnt want you to get your hopes up TOO high
gaming industry gonna gaming industry
Jason Schrier doesn't look or dress how he sounds
I primarily know him from his podcast, where I only hear him talk and he's generally got an enthusiastic, somewhat high pitched tone
oh, it has 3 months of free Nitro too
this brings the total months of free Nitro I've had to 7 over the years

99% chance everytime there's one of these big cinematic 'reveal' trailers for a game the game's probably not even in development yet and it's gonna be like 2.5 years before you hear anything about it, probably like 5 years until release
it's almost always ''hey look at this thing we're working on please invest in our studio/if you're an artist or dev come work at our studio for this game''
speaking of games yet to come though, the demo for Pragmata is out and it's pretty cool actually!

I did the space age aesthetic so hard, already downloading this
Apparently the full game releasing in 4 months, very good.
the demo is super short so it won't overstay its welcome too
it's like a nice little slice of a level
After begging people to "not let" Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 win Game of the Year, Arc Raiders advocate and ex-FPS pro Shroud finally plans to play the RPG after its Game Awards sweep
However, he also said something else interesting at the time: "I like to play the game of the year, so whatever the game of the year is going to be, I'll play it." Well, Shroud, your time has come.

also I don't know if it was mentioned here already, but the Donkey Kong part of this year's orchestra was incredible
yeeeee
I like how they all clearly shifted a gear up with the Hades 2 part and it just continued on with that pace for the Donkey Kong part
This year's orchestra was awesome, but I still think 2023 is the best one they ever did
Hey I just had a thought... I miss when more games had a double jump
Same ngl
...we are not playing the same games
I guess the jet pack in Kerbal Space Program is the closest thing to that in the games I do play?
I feel like just about every 2D platformer and/or metroidvania I play has a double jump, except for the Marios, and maybe half the 3Ds?
im trying to think
Doom 2016 and Eternal have double jumps
i think most of the other games i play don't
I believe most of the games I play that don't have a double jump also don't have a jump at all
The first game I played that had a double jump besides SM64 was Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
Mario 64 doesn't have a double jump
It doesn't. It has a triple jump
true
Which means it does!
"Ya! Hoo! Wahoo!"
no when i think double jump i think of a jump you can do midair
Some air jumps are double jumps
Celeste has a jump you can do midair but you can get midair any way you like, including with a dash
Could've sworn there was an xkcd what if about double jumps too, but apparently not...
I debated making the same clarification earlier since Mario "doesn't have double jumps" but it does have a different thing it calls a double jump
I think every Igavania I've played had a double jump. In fact they tended to place the double jump much earlier than I'm used to in other metroidvanias.
Mario has a real double jump in Smash Bros
does Jane Pseudoregalia's kick jump count as a double jump?
I guess Rondo of Blood is a dubious case since Maria has the double jump but Richter does not
nah Sybil doesn't have a double jump
that's one of the reasons I said "maybe half the 3Ds" earlier
A Hat in Time is a 3D platformer with a traditional double jump
(even acknowledged in-game; I forget the exact dialogue but it's something like "did you know all small people can jump in midair?" "seriously? that's no fair")
the Sly Coopers and the Ratchet & Clanks also have double jumps and are 3D
i remember playing Epic Mickey as a child of 9 and trying to double jump irl
i thought if i tried really hard i could do it
Mario's really the odd one out on this hyperspecific point. I don't think I've ever seen a Mario-style "double jump"/triple jump in any non-Mario game, which is itself interesting.
this is off topic but do you guys remember that Gameboy commercial where a robot zaps a teenage boy into existence and plays Tetris with him and then the boy beats him and zaps the robot out of existence even though he gave him a gameboy
I do but only because it's been used as background footage in video essays about that era of gaming
it's fucked up
if i was given a gameboy in the late 80s i would not zap the person who gave it to me into atoms
so is the Sega ad where some guy smacks himself with a dead squirrel
Sega had some absolutely insane ads
man I'm replaying that donkey kong bananza part of the game awards orchestra over and over it's just so good
one day I'll play that game, maybe, when owning a Switch 2 here doesn't cost an arm and a leg and someone else's leg
also speaking of sega it's a bit funny that even after that crossworlds ad mario kart still ended up winning
i really want a switch 2 but yeah they are quite expensive
How much are they in the US again? Because they're like 800 USD here
Importation price plus we technically don't actually officially have them here yet until... whenever Nintendo decides we're worthy of it releasing here
oh weird
oops I missed the entire conversation I started
Ellen McLain is known as the voice actor for GLaDOS in Portal and Portal 2, as well as the Administrator / Announcer in Team Fortress 2, and various characters in Dota 2. In this interview the actress reacts to comments about the video games, Wheatley, and even sings the Portal song Still Alive.
#portal #portal2 #tf2
I was debating whether or not to share that video earlier today
It's really strange how I can hear the glados voice in her normal voice
''The TF2 announcer is pretty much the only person I could imagine playing chess with GLaDOS''
''Oh, do you mean the skinny old bitch?''

yeah... it's not exactly a rumor so much as it's an observation about the length of time it takes to make a video game and how early in the cycle this game appears to have been announced.
I could easy see Disney pushing for a KOTOR3 game suddenly and without really any prep work... consider for example that Star Wars Acolyte was announced at the end of 2020 but it didn't even start being written until June of the following year and wouldn't film until 2022 or release until 2024
It’s possible that a prototype has been developed at another studio and the project was transferred over
But yeah, who knows
Could be rushed, or maybe they don’t need to spend time working on tooling so much, or maybe he’s wrong?
Maybe the game won’t reach completion at all? I think this isn’t the first time he tried to make his own studio
or they intend heavy AI use, we know disney is investing hard into it
Maybe
Mass Effect 3 was made in about two years
18-22 months is what’s usually cited
Maybe he’s just confident in his ability to manage a studio and deliver something.
I could buy that there’s confidence if they have a clear script already and don’t need to spend much time with custom engine development
Apparently Mass Effect 2 was in less than 3 years
Kinda surprising given the scope of that game
if it was phrased more like "I'm hoping it won't take that long
" then I'd probably buy all of that, but a factual "will be" has me skeptical
delays are not a skill issue, they're part of the development process
yeah but ME3 was basically ME2 but better
they already had the engine and system and groundwork in place
Same with ME2, basically. All Unreal Engine 3.5
Mass Effect 1 took 4.5 years

Vehicle racing with violence and multiple vehicle classes on one track is what made motorstorm for me
It’s fun playing deltarune without having been spoiled anything. I finished chapter two today, going to play chapter 3 tomorrow
I have a strong feeling Ralsei is evil
Or at least not being entirely honest
I did both of the secret bosses, not going to make any theories about the knight yet
I liked Jevil more, but I thought Spamton was a creative character
I have a feeling I haven’t seen the last of either of them
I have a friend semi helping me, so that I don’t miss any content
Like the eggs
But so far, I’m completely spoiler free, I’ve got no idea what way the store is gonna go
Other than my suspicion with Ralsei
Did your friend show you the way to piss spamton off in the battle?
who's your favorite character so far
no actually
what was I supposed to do?
i just snapped at him until he ggot tired
I'm not sure I have a fav yet, but I can tell you my least fav; lancer annoys me so much
my friend loves him
and he's lucky im doing a pacifist run, i wouldve smoked him instantly
Jevil really intrigued me, i really do hope he comes back
It's only a thing that can be done on a keyboard, so if you didn't play on PC, i don't think you can do it
oh?
I played on keyboard during his fight, but i switched to controller for all the easy npcs
So anyways, there was a bit of a glitch in the programming (to my knowledge) that made it so one of the keyboard keys (I believe it's the TAB key, but dont quote me on that) allows you to shoot the fully charged version of your "soul attack" (where you're turned sideways and have to play a shoot 'em up basically), and if you used it even once, he gets MAD, basically doubling his speed and glowing red from anger
(It was initially a glitch, but Toby was cool and kept it in, but made the fight harder if you did that)
ya that definitely didnt happen in my run, ill have to ask my friend tomorrow when we start ch3
Toby pfff-
hes pretty funny, but sometimes he thinks he's funnier than he is
As of the most recent Deltratune Chapter 2 patch, holding Enter and tapping Z to shoot more big shots than you're supposed to be able to will anger Spamton NEO, causing him to deal significantly more damage.
As far as I know this doesn't do anything other than bump up the difficulty and make his face beet red for his family photo tonight.
Er, should I spoiler this?
Funniest part is, speedrunners used this exploit due to how much faster it is
It saves so much time, but makes the boss a lot harder
One question I have for you: are you a fan of Nubert, or not? Cus if not, we can't be friends
Most games end each chapter with a screen that is almost full of black pixels
thats the red squish dude right? I like that he keeps coming back
and that he progressivley is getting more famous
Flitter what N64 emulator do you use?
I used to use Bizhawk for OoT archipelago
Nowadays I use Ship of Harkinian because it's more configurable and runs better
Ah I see
So beautiful
not many FPSes in particular have one, it was quite the surprise when Doom 2016 was the first modern FPS to have one
UT2004 also has it, it lets you extend the duration of the speed boost granted by dodging
I like how you can go full Road Rash in MotorStorm when on a quad or bike, with the melee moves
Doom 2016 and Eternal have their double jumps but then in Dark Ages it feels like you're glued to the ground
Drakan has an exploit where jumping just after landing can let you do a long jump, but it's not intended
Legends of Equestria has a similar exploit too (or had, back when I played it in 2018)

Yeah, the marketing is full of lies
yeah i saw that and was like "Yeah that explains the embargos."
ffs even the retro scene is full of marketing bs now
Always has been
kinda wild that this is by some metrics apparently the most accurate emulator to date and the marketing decided to go all-in on THIS IS NOT AN EMULATOR
Ehhh if I was making a Nintendo retrobox I would also try to avoid the E word
Lest the Nintendo Ninjas get involved.
(Then again, I would probably try to avoid making anything Nintendo-related on any scale other than personal in the first place.)
I did play the Pragmata demo and it was pretty nice, I think there is a bit of a risk that the mechanics might be a bit too simple to hold for a full lenght game, but it was a short demo and the story seems engaging enough.
Definitely will be looking at reviews when it comes out in april to figure out if it's worth the time, what's there is really solid.
yeah I don't think word choice is going to affect whether Nintendo comes after this
this is all i know about Pragmata
which probably isn't a slight against the game as much as it is overblown AAAA nonsense, but it's still kind of funny that a friend sent me this without any other context
Pretty much all games nowdays need to compile shaders once at launch
I mean big 3d games
It was really not a surprise when it did it
how good are they at actually reusing the shaders after the first launch? I rarely play games where this matters but I feel like some perf complaints involve the shaders recompiling over and over again when they shouldn't need to
Definitely prefer it to when games didn't and tried to compile them on the fly and absolutely murdered their own frame timing as a result
Shader compilation only needs to be done once per set of hardware
Well sometimes after updates
But yeah generally you aren't gonna see that screen very often, in my experience at least
That's true, if you update your drivers, for example, you would need to recompile shaders
Any changes to GPU architecture, to relevant APIs, or to drivers would make it necessary
to be clear, I know this is the case in theory (I've literally written shaders lol), but I've heard that games often failed to achieve it in practice so I was curious how true that is
I mean, I don't have examples that didn't compile shaders, and then after an updated switched to the new systems to compare
And it's hard to tell if a game is running poorly is because it's not using the shaders effectively
I do know that I have to sit paused at the start of every POE2 map for the shaders to load or the game runs like ass and I hate it, so anecdotally at least, I like when the game loads them ahead of time.
(Apparently they made it better last patch, I have yet to play it though, so I can still be mad)
i mean, i guess FFXIV has loading issues sometimes, but i guess that's just my PC being a cunt
(it is a cranky ol' thing)
To be fair, so is FFXIV
it does lead to rare instances of me tposing while trying to load in, so it's a win either way

Okay, looking into it
Street Fighter 6
That is what your friend found funny? Not the horrible 6 page brightness settings at the start?
There's like 5 pages for completely different brightness settings when you start the game
-# ↩ izzy (@isobel.top)
YES THANK YOU @patstaresat.bsky.social it is so validating it is to see someone else go through the exact same emotional journey with this awful brightness menu
165
it's validating to see (HAH) someone just go "yeah i knock up the brightness"
some games have broken shader caches, which cause needless invalidations
it's the exception, not the norm thankfully
All right. GPU+Driver+OS combo is ONE reason recompilation is necessary.
Other reasons:
1- Shader is not hash-identical to an existing compiled shader. The driver checks intermediate representation, entry point, compile flags, and other functional pieces of the shader to determine that.
2- Other parts of the pipeline changed. If you introduce a different antialiasing method to the pipeline, or change the layout of the pipeline in other ways, you need a recompilation.
3- If you already have a cached version of the shader, but the internal compiler changed or the global settings of the driver changed, you'll have to make it all over again.
In short, drivers have to be ultra conservative with this sort of shit because in the best case scenario this results in stutter or visual corruption. In the worst case kernel-level driver crashes

Eevee, maybe
You are making me make some very hard decisions right now and I do not like that
That's a very hard question
my real one is Beedrill (who also happens to be my all time favorite), but i also adore missingno
Sephiroth
Squirtle and Wartortle come to mind, as well as Charmander, Eevee, Mew, Vulpix, Sandslash, and Marowak
Alakazam is cool too
Ninetales and Pidgeotto/Pidgeot too
Ninetales, Nidorina, Sandshrew/Sandslash…
they should make missingno a real pokemon
Mew is okay I guess.

You can do that in principle
But reshelling the cart is probably better
And it'd be expensive if I wanted like 3-4 of these in rotation
oh yeah i like Porygon too
I kinda wish we could get an official Game Freak take on this art style, kind of like an elevated gen 5 with the combined sprites and 3d

Also I keep coming back to that orchestra performance because it's really damn good
I finished chapter 3 today, that was pretty tough
Roaring knight had to basically be done hitless, that took 4-5 attempts
This is exactly how it felt

Also the video game in a game was cool, but not my favorite play on the narrative
Also I’m like still almost completely unsure about everything story wise
I still think Ralsei is evil
Pretty much still don’t have any clear answer to everything else
Hopefully chapter four leaves me with a few more fixed ends, though it probably won’t
Lastly, the egg this chapter was so stupid to get
How anyone could’ve gotten that without looking at the code is beyond me

The marketing for the Analogue 3D is deceptive. This is their marketing page:
Welcome to a new dimension
A reimagining of the N64. In 4K resolution. 10x the resolution of the original N64.* The first and perhaps greatest multiplayer system of all time. Analogue3D is 100% compatible with every original N64 game ever made. Region Free. Bluetooth LE. Dualband Wifi. Four original-style controller ports. Entirely new, next generation Analogue hardware featuring 3DOS. Engineered entirely in FPGA. No Emulation.```
1- It's not a reimagining, it copies the N64 as closely as it can.
2- 4k is not ten times the resolution of the original N64.
3- N64 was not the first multiplayer system of all time.
4- Analogue3D is compatible only with games that were published during the lifetime of the N64, not games released past it.
5- True, it is free of regional restrictions, but so is the original N64.
6- FPGA is a form of hardware emulation.
Ah, so buzzword marketing
Analogue3D represents a milestone in video game preservation. It's not just a reimagining of the N64—it's the first fully compatible, hardware-accurate recreation, fully compatible with the entire N64 game library. After nearly four years of dedicated FPGA engineering, Analogue3D overcomes the limitations of software emulation—no input lag, no graphic or audio inaccuracies, no timing or frame rate problems. This is the N64, perfected and true to its core
1- It's not a milestone in videogame preservation. It's not the first of its kind.
2- It's not fully compatible, not hardware-accurate, does have input lag and graphic and audio inaccuracies as well as timing and framerate problems.
And so on and so forth
Kinda like saying "military grade". For the average person, that means "good quality". For military, it means "cheap crap thrown together on the fly with spit, gum, tape, and prayer because you have nothing else to work with and have a very limited budget".
Right. As with everything, you should actively distrust marketing, and look for impartial expert reviews

Divinity is turn-based!!!!!! (Oof, that link did not embed like I had hoped.)
Well, it's a non-paywalled access link to the article. In it, Swen Vincke confirms that Divinity will be a turn-based CRPG.
If y'all want the tomb raider trilogy, it's 90% off. 10ish bucks for all three
LFG!

CRPG?
you're asking what a CRPG is?
Ixrec — 9/21/25, 15:23
more generally, I suspect the least wrong short definitions we can give these days are
...
"CRPG" used to mean Computer RPG, but now it's retronymed to Classic RPG with the meaning of Baldur's Gate-like (especially 1-2)
...
rip my dream of Montraels and Maple Leafs
Larian Studios' Divinity series and then Baldur's Gate 3 has been a huge part of the recent revival of CRPGs
i thought it was Combat RPG but
right, Action RPG is a thing
also most RPGs have combat, dum dum hc
yeah CRPG is not as self-explanatory as JRPG
but the concept it's going for probably can't be
my message said "Classic" yes
it would be really funny if people started feeling the need to distinguish between actually-old Classic RPGs and the "modern Classic" RPGs
I could see Larian ending up in a name for the latter
LRPG
Neither is 1
Metroid Composite
Would anyone care for a fresh Factorio + Space Age server for Manechat?
We talked about it earlier in #1032767535805902888
Good luck, for me Factorio is a deeply personal experience in which I can explore how inadequate I am, I can barely handle it as is, I can't be in the same game as other, more comptetent people than me.
(Half joking, have fun)
I’m also quite bad at it
i've only played Satisfactory
Mostly because I have a hard time actually working out all the math. I feel like Factorio could give more information.
That's what the calculator and extra info mods are for
Babe wake up it's time for your daily AI-related news! This time with Larian
https://www.ign.com/articles/larian-ceo-responds-to-divinity-gen-ai-backlash-we-are-neither-releasing-a-game-with-any-ai-components-nor-are-we-looking-at-trimming-down-teams-to-replace-them-with-ai
Seems like this spawned from an interview with a different news outlet here where they mention Larian is ''pushing hard on generative AI''
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2025-12-16/-baldur-s-gate-3-maker-promises-divinity-will-be-next-level?utm_source=website&utm_medium=share&utm_campaign=copy
and then Swen Vincke replied
in the article he links they do talk about using machine learning systems for certain tasks that I think most people would be fine with, stuff like for example:
"It's the obvious things, like a motion capture cleaning or voice editing or, something very specific. Retargeting. So that is basically if you play with different species, you want to be able to reuse an animation on a different species that are in different size, and then they're doing certain interactions with others," Vincke explained.
but in the tweet he says a completely different thing, talking about using AI for initial concept ideas that they then use real art for, which defeats the entire purpose completely
AI is an AMAZING tool for rapid iteration. But it doesn't replace artists.
And every game studio does this, or will do very very soon. Anyone who thinks otherwise is not understanding the situation.
"Defeats the purpose"?
How?
he also explicitly says in the tweet that regular concept artists are involved after the "very early ideation" stage that does AI art, and that they are not "replacing" concept artists
maybe there's something wrong with that statement, but without being a game dev myself that seems plausibly fine
There's no point in having a real artist iterate upon the AI-generated concept, at that point you're already using AI for it, just use the AI generated output and be honest with it, because an artist didn't come up with it, I don't believe in using AI to generate things and then having an artist touch it up later, that's not a real artist doing anything and it defeats the purpose of even having a real artist that simply could've come up with a design anyways. These are ''world-class'' artists according to his own words, if they can't handle the task of creating unique concepts on a team of 23 concept artists what are they even here for? And if they can handle the task, why have the AI here? It's just needlessly complicating the entire creative process, you can cut down either the AI or the artist from this process to make it more effective.
But I'm not really looking to go back and forth on the topic, I just wanted to share the whole news because it's kind of spread between like 3 different articles and a random tweet so people could see what the situation was about, especially because it's Larian and I imagine the news being AI related will probably spread very quickly
Been saying this for years and yet seemingly nobody is catching on to the fact that AI is used this way.
I think there's just overall disagreements even inside the company about the usage because a different guy I think the director of publishing in Larian is super against AI which is really funny and some quote retweets already highlighted that with some of his own tweets
tbh I'm also skeptical that, if Larian was using AI, they'd use it for such a small purpose
they're not stupid, they know the PR risk of touching AI with a ten-foot barge pole
and unlike the mega publishers their business actually depends on maintaining good PR
that's why I mentioned this part
lol @ my Stream Wrapped chart
The way I've read it, the way they are using it, is essentially the "doodle on the back of the napkin" stage.
Like, this is before any actual artist has put any work into creating the thing they have to create, to give the artist an idea of what they have to create, since we are human being and we can't just beam thoughts into each other heads.
Before it would have been a collage of images taken from google, or a literal doodle done in 30 seconds by the person that had the idea regardless of their artistic skill.
So an equally non artistic job as just putting a few keywords on dall-e
behold the complete lack of overlap and also E33 confusing the data
huh, I have 28% playtime in New Releases, compared to global average of 14%
that feels weird but maybe it's the new normal now that all of you normal people are playing those live service forever games that technically came out a decade ago???
E33 I didn't play on Steam so it's not in there, that said you can clearly see Ender Magnolia and Silksong happened the same year
The rest is Warframe, No Man's Sky and a bit of Elite Dangerous if I had to guess
Oh and POE2
Oh and a bit of a Rimworld relapse
mhmm, steam data will never b accurate for me either bc it doesnt count ffxiv
in my case it's missing Metroid Prime 4
which evidently didn't matter much for my genre tag graph
I saw what was said in the interview, but knew that Larian wasn't replacing anyone on their team or actually using AI in their final product (Larian is waaaay too smart and too honest to do that), so I am okay with this. If it helps save a lot of headaches and time for everyone and every bit of it is later removed and replaced with human-made art and work, then I don't see the problem.
In fact, that is the one singular use for AI art that I think is fine: workshopping ideas. It gives you a basic concept of what something could look like, and then you take that concept, fix it up, reorganize it, add to it, remove what doesn't work, and make it uniquely yours. The end result can still end up being wildly different from that intial first generation.
In this one specific instance, I can see why people would use it, as a means for getting an easy general visual sense of what something you're working on could look like before you actually start working on what it will look like.
it is funny that you can clearly see on my progress i am really trying to curb the "ooo shiny" impulses and do one game at a time
I have such a problem with that
Entirely agree. Generated AI assets are great for rapid iteration and for placeholders.
Gotta replace them with real art later, but during development it doesn't actually matter.
The only time when it becomes a major problem is if those AI assets are then used to actually promote the game (or movie or show or book) and not just used internally as placeholders for when the real art is added.
Yeah, I'm not a fan of that either. I can see it being done by mistake, but it's not acceptable when done intentionally.
Larian isn't hiring AI "artists". They are hiring artists who use AI to make their lives easier in the very initial stages of development so that they can save hours upon hours of work workshopping ideas. This is perfectly morally acceptable, imo. The artists aren't going to use those images as end states, only for inspiration. It cuts down on crunch and allows them more time to work on what actually matters: the real, human-made assets used in the final product.
its jan-feb kcd I, then feb-mar kcd II, mar-may is stardew, may-jul is bg3, august is the odd one out and then september forward its just hades
Exactly.
And of course the individual employees can choose to use the AI tools or not, it's generally up to them (this is true across every company, really)
I did install and mod KCD1 per your advice BTW, now I have to see when I have a good day free to actually start it for real though
someday I will get to Hades 2
Yes, we got along just fine without AI before, I agree. We still can. But this is a perfectly acceptable compromise that does more good than harm. There is no art theft here. The artists making the art in the final product are still making their own art in their own styles, without copying anyone else.
but I expect that game will require the ability to lock-in, which I do not currently possess
i finallyyyyy got to progress on the epilogue quest, so i should be "done" with hades to the point i wanted to be soon (ie get to see the epilogue)
though I doubt I'll do heat 32 again
.... how fortunate then, that ffxiv's new patch dropped today
Precisely, Larian is just giving them the option to use them, not forcing it upon them like Microsoft or many other companies. Like I said, Larian is not stupid.
I've trusted them before, and they've given me absolutely no reason to not trust them now.
I do want to set aside a couple of day for FFXIV
arcadion! arcadion! arcadion!
Really want to see how the arcadion story concludes

some of us have a chart of six genre tags, others have "great soundtrack" and "40k"
The only 40K game I played was Space Marine 2
I just like the implication that you don't play the games, you just sit there and vibe to them
theyre just Songs with gameplay
It's most likely because of UNDERTALE and DELTARUNE
35% of my played games were ones that came out this year, 15% was classics, and 50% was recent favourites
Heh, perfectly balanced. ||As all things should be…||
Eeyup. Mine would be missing the ungodly WoW hours
also my graph is tainted by the couple idlers I left running for a couple days
this wrap thing just reminds me i rlly wanna replay kcd II again
now that we have all those fancy patch and dlc thingies
Sounds about right
I should try playing the first one again

Ah, just realized, the Steam Replay is what people were posting earlier. Here's mine:
is this the “I have played nothing but Larian all year” spread?
Unfortunately, I really only played two games this year, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and the Avernum 4 remake. This year was not a very good year for me with games. Too depressed.
I'm hoping to play more next year, starting by finishing Avernum 4, and then moving on to a JRPG or puzzle game instead to spice things up a bit. Maybe even some Factorio or a platformer like the N-Sane Trilogy or Sonic Frontiers.
Like I said earlier, mine is definitely tainted
I wonder if 'hiding' the game will change those results...
seems about right for me too
I didn't really play much this year so much as I just re-replayed MGSV a ton and re-re-replayed RE2 and the DMC games, and played a bit of that Battlefront 2
hmmm.... I might reinstall Torchlight 2.... that game is actually pretty fun even if I wasn't paying a lick of attention to the lore at all
Nope, marking it as hidden or removing it from played doesn't change the replay page
Had to go at (appropriately) 33% zoom to get everything. And even then, E33 was on gamepass because I was really low on money and that was the cheaper option at the time (before the price hike)
A fair bit of those I have like less than an hour on though, some are demos, some I got distracted playing something else. And since this is steam, it doesn't track my ungodly hours in WoW
I remember people being excited for Death Must Die but then it ended up being a bit underwhelming
It's still in early access
https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/2334730/view/587284808250427102?l=english they have a roadmap discussing their plans, seems they've given it a lot of thought
INTRO It's been a while since our last post, so we wanted to communicate what we've been working on and expand on the roadmap ahead. In short, we are making sweeping changes, increasing the scope of the game to create a bigger and more cohesive experience. ENVIRONMENT & ART The world of Death Must Die started as an infinite plane, with a few obj...
Yeah but Hades was in early access too and I remember hearing some discussion about it still, Death Must Die kinda just fizzled out, but maybe it's gonna change when the game actually comes out
There was this one game I remember seeing I thought looked a bit interesting
I think I didn't end up checking it out because it sounded like it's a better co op experience rather than solo
I have it on my wishlist too
Oh, for bullet heaven (seems like people are pushing for that to be the survivors-like tag) I would heartily recommend DRG: Survivors. That's actually launched too

I.... I guess they're kinda similar....
I guess it rolls off the tongue better than ''Vampire Survivors-like''
Ah, you can manipulate the replay by marking a game private. I left gnorp apologue running 3-4 days to get stuff since it's an idler/clicker and that skewed things too much
In comparison, this is more accurate
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1473350/the_Gnorp_Apologue/ a pretty neat idler, actually
oh ok i thought it was like Poob
im guessing this based off on hours played
god game ?
yeah idk what that means
A god game is an artificial life game that casts the player in the position of controlling the game on a large scale, as an entity with divine and supernatural powers, as a great leader, or with no specified character (as in Spore), and places them in charge of a game setting containing autonomous characters to guard and influence.
A god game is basically Hades or Age of Mythology
where you play as a god
clearly
The classic ones like Populous or Black and White absolutely were, just that you were a god playing a strategy game rather than a roguelite. IDK what kind of weird definition people are using ti consider a WWII simulator a “god game”
souls-like is me

yeah, it says right at the top this is only because Bulgaria itself is switching currencies

Meta's products are unbelievably disrespectful of the user
I shared this in another chat and everyone suddenly commented how this was the worst TGA ever and it was chock full of AI slop
And I'm just here like
?????
The absolute fuck are you talking about
the TGA was "full of AI slop"?
Accusing Geoff of being ultra-pro AI too
?????????????????????/
The fuck are these people smoking
this feels like what would happen if you received all of your news through AI summaries
Right?
Also I recall a bunch of them just pointedly refusing to watch too, so like... how do you plan to know anything about what happened in it?
It had some good reveals. And some I wasn’t expecting.
Won’t be long until summer games fest returns

If you even breathe the fact that AI was used, even for the tiniest, tiniest little thing that saved 5 minutes of time maximum, you're branded AI slop
Touhou 20 had that "contreversy", yeah
god forbid a solo dev in his 50s use AI for a background. For a demo.
Which...
Appearing live on the Touhou Station YouTube channel, ZUN explained that his goal in using AI in Fossilized Wonders was to “reduce it to nothing more than a tool,” rather than let it become a replacement for a real creator. “The most important thing is not to lose to AI. Naturally, entrusting the act of creation entirely to AI means losing to it. However, denying AI outright or rejecting it just because you dislike it is also a form of losing to AI.”
ZUN went on to comment that “AI is just a convenient tool, and using it this way was my way of asserting that I won’t lose when it comes to creative work.” Regarding the ethical issues of art theft and infringement that inevitably come up when AI art is involved, ZUN clarifies that the AI-generated backgrounds in Fossilized Wonders were created using Adobe Firefly. Adobe Firefly’s image generation model is considered to be trained on legally-sound materials such as Adobe-owned and public domain images. It also permits commercial use of exported images.
“Precisely because I have a negative stance towards AI, I believe refusing to use it at all would be the same as losing to it.”
Ah, they're citing bullshit, uncited bluesky posts as hard, irrefutable proof... alright, kids.
maybe we do need to bring back the "primary sources" thing
^
Yeah, a lot of these absolutists are comparing these studios using AI to being the artist, when it's more akin of the AI being the brush that they are using. (though some AAA studios are definitely using it wholesale in some cases, cutting out the artist... looking at you COD). Labeling them all the same as slop is just so, so damn stupid
Leaving that server, they're just too tangled up and confused for me to deal with
even if the blueskier(???) did nothing wrong (which is already a huge if), a random offhand comment is going to be leaving out so much context it's very easy to misinterpret if you have no other source on the issue
It's not like they ever listen to a word I say anyway
sadly a lot of people don't care about what's true, just about finding excuses to be angry; those are not the people worth engaging with
also in the case of Touhou 20 using AI for backgrounds...
It's Touhou. You're not seeing more than 2% of the screen at any given time anyway.
(whether they lean left or right or a confusing mix)
They're very left but also want to be angry at everything.
Nothing is good, ever, and saying otherwise makes you a corporate shill
(Exaggerating, but like, god this was so dumb, thankfully I didn't run into anyone who actually thought this was a crime against humanity)
(at the risk of going into R2 territory, these same lefts have such an absolutist view that nothing can ever be good enough, so they won't vote and now we're where we are. It's the same mentality with AI in this case)
This has been my experience with that group, especially in the past several months
(This is also a good summary of a lot of AI discourse)
mm-hmm, the form of "horseshoe theory" that is true is that when you define yourself primarily by blind hatred of <thing>, with no regard for the nuanced and changing reality of that thing, it quickly becomes trivial to make anything and everything a fair target, and the only distinction between these groups becomes which words they're currently primed to attack
i hate how this applies to me with stuff like double pressing a space on smartphone to make a full stop.
(Bitching about petty stuff that doesn't hurt anyone is fun though!)
Guh i wanna finish OoT but >FF14
yes come
dive into the spoilers with me
I see that as an autocorrect for all the people who were wrongly told that you should have two spaces after a period. Although it only ever triggers for me when it is not useful or desired (I always explicitly type a period).
(The FFXIV thread is currently a fucking CIA document because of me)
just finished hades epilogue today! i might be divin into the patch tomorrow but i think ill be too busy so probably not until monday
I had to restart my save file earlier because NSO is shit and didnt want to save my progress for some reason
there was a Hades patch ???
I keep forgetting the double space to add a period pattern exists
no, hades 1
I always explicitly type my periods.
they're referring to patch 7.4 of FFXIV
OH
ah, yea sorry, it was mostly response to hc
that makes more sense
yeah there was a bit of crossed wires i felt needed to be uncrossed
that's why i always just do a save state when im done playing so im back exactly where i was
Would that work if the save fails tho
ive never had problems with save states
Save states may be responsible for this mess
the AI slop at TGA took the form of a 50 foot woman presenter...
silly AI doesn't know the appropriate size of a woman
that one lady from silent hill?
resitdent evil, whatever
im not versed in horror games
Lady Dimitrescu is from Resident Evil 8, yes
That's not what the guy said, but if that's what he meant, then he worded his tweet in the worst way possible, especially knowing how much of a hot topic genAI is
His previous mentions of using machine learning systems previously were completely fine and understandable, but the way he worded his tweet made it sound like they'd just generate concept arts that the artists would then use as reference/paint over, which is exactly what the director of publishing also said when he tried to calm people down by explaining more of what they use it for
maybe Grok isnt the best example there
but stuff like ChatGPT/Gemini/etc are decent enough for quick summaries, preferably for stuff youre already familiar with
but please do not use LLMs as a substitute for search engines
as if we needed more proof that social media is the worst place to have discussions about complicated topics
once again, no one can even agree on the basic facts of the case, so the differing "opinions" are ultimately meaningless
What is the best place?
As many people pointed out since, it's also really strange for him to point out how people were initially against it at their studio but then they started coming around to it and are okay with how it's used now, considering Larian's hiring process and the fact that people have to emigrate to Belgium to even work there, yeah I'd bet people would start being fine with it if it meant keeping their jobs
https://bsky.app/profile/unburntwitch.com/post/3ma4ozsue5c22
Everyone is more or less okay with it” dude you make people emigrate to work there because you don’t do remote work, they risk having to change countries if they disagree with it

Larian's horrible hirring process is an open secret in the industry – insane amounts of unpaid work in "writing tests", excessive numbers of interviews, months and months of back and forth, etc. Everyone in games narrative circles has heard the stories at this point, probably from multiple people.
-# Zoë “Baddie Proctor” Quinn (@unburntwitch.com)
I know this because they tried to recruit me and I strongly considered it but they’re also a “do an unpaid writing test where you have to also make it playable” company so that’s not something I vibe with
1104

I know a lot of people have this mentality of ''well it's not gonna be there on the end result so it's fine'', but I feel like that's a very short sighted mentality to have and it's essentially the same as all the people that now are complaining about things like Amazon's AI dubbing just because it sounds bad, and not because it's AI in the first place and all that that represents, even if it sounded good it would still be bad regardless, the same way even if the end result of whatever this game is doesn't have generated content in it it doesn't change the fact that it was used at all and how that 'infects' all parts of the process of the production, even for something as '''''small''''' as generating concepts for inspiration (a process that is not small at all, those are literally the foundations of the identity of your project, it dictates what mood you're gonna go for, what look, what vibe, what aesthetic, it's about as active of a creative process as you can think of. Selecting images to put on a moodboard and using some machine learning system to create the moodboard itself would be a completely different actually OK usage of the technology, since that is actually menial non-creative work, but that's not what they're saying)
The funny thing is, even the guy himself on the interview said that they're not even seeing that many improvements in terms of speed during production anyways, so it's not like this magic technology that's solving every step of the production and allowing artists infinite freedom, and when asked why they're even using it if it's not even offering them that much, the guy basically said that it's a new technology, and every business has to use whatever hot new technology is out there or else you risk getting left behind, so they just have to use it to appear competitive and state-of-the-art to the industry at large. And those are his own words.
ah a blatant reference to Yoshi's broken grammar in Mario 64
I don't like that they are using Gen AI at all
im playing Mario Odyssey because i wanna use the Santa costume but you have to beat the game first
yeah, this isn't even about the facts we have access to any more, this is all about whether your personal (dis)trust is low enough that you'll assume even the reasonable parts of the story in the sources we do have are just lying or biased
of course game publishers only have themselves to blame for people assuming the worst of them
would be nice if we could go a whole year without one of the beloved indie studios turning out to be just another abusive employer
at this point it wouldn't even surprise me if Sandfall was evil too
Team Cherry?
Cherry's probably safe because IIUC it is literally two guys and whoever they contract
