This is a mermaid guide. You have to solve their riddle and they'll help you chart the bottom of the sea near them
Normally the riddles are fun, like this one:
Run! Escape! Flee! Abscond! Bail! Evade! In the end, there's a point to it!
But the one in the screenshot basically asks me to read an in-game cookbook and write down the recipe
We have followed through on our plans and made small reductions in the PC installation size over the last few patches while still adding new content. While this was a good start, our short term fixes have not been enough to keep up with all of the new content in the latest patch. The longer term goal has always been to bring the PC installation size much closer in line with the console versions. We are happy to report that, thanks to our partners at Nixxes, we have reached that goal much sooner than expected. By completely de-duplicating our data, we were able to reduce the PC installation size from ~154GB to ~23GB, for a total saving of ~131GB (~85%). We have completed several rounds of internal QA and are ready to roll this out to early adopters as a public technical beta. Our testing shows that for the small percentage of players still using mechanical hard disk drives, mission loading times have only increased by a few seconds in the worst cases. This is live NOW!
Crazy how they had ~six copies of the same data downloaded to every device
oh my god
finally
hopefully it won't take long to hit live
because I uninstalled due to the filesize haha
You can volunteer to test it immediately
Holy shit I might consider actually re-installing the game sometime if it's really gonna decrease that much, because I just cannot have multiple 50+ gb games in my system even with a completely separate 1TB ssd specifically for games
when Helldivers got to like 80 GB I already didn't feel like re-installing that game again
having read in detail, I'll give it a shot haha
this was done to speed up loading on HDDs presumably, since they have slow seek times
duplicating the data lets you ensure it's physically closer on the platter, reducing access times
Yeah, it's been done without testing the actual result
HDD gaming is so rare in 2025, I assume they deemed it wasn't worth it eventually
Upon testing they changed their mind
Turns out it was a very marginal change to loading speed
I am surprised they did it in the first place, this is considered 2008-era optical media optimization (when games shipped on DVD or Blu-Ray)
fun fact: Godot had support for this in its first versions, until 2.0 or so (2016)
Neat!

I won't share the image to avoid spoilers (this is all still pretty fresh, after all) but you can see it at the conclusion of his escape video. The game-ending action begins around the 42:00 mark, but if you're a Tarkov fan (and don't mind spoilers) you might not want to skip ahead: PC Gamer's own Tarkov-escapee-in-the-making Jake Tucker tells me that just about everything in the video is brand new and, in his words, "huge and exciting."
I didn't even know you could escape
I didn't think that was possible.
Like I wouldn't have expected a mechanic to actually leave the game area to have been implemented
I think it's something they put in only recently
Or at least that's what the article said
Huh
Yep
The full 1.0 release didn't happen until November 15 of this year, a major update that added—among other things—the "non-linear story campaign and end-game content."
So that's why it took so long for someone to actually make the fabled escape: It just wasn't possible until now.
TIL it hit 1.0
I looked closer at the Tiger I in war thunder... It's offcenter
So I dug a bit and found this.. Wtf?!
... ok sorry
oh my god no you're fine
You don't feel like insulting the LoL community because it's been a while since you played, a couple of games in if you go back this joke will sound hilarious
I wish I could help you though, but you seem more informed about the state of the game than me
I don't know why it'd be funny to insult myself alongside the community if I end up playing.
The Vanguard always-on-kernel-level-anticheat is sorta my biggest point of hesitation. I know for most folks it's been working ok so far, but I don't really want to install it just to play one or two matches a week haha.
The new changes look interesting for the map, but I need to look into it more to see how that's going to roll out and when.
I did try DOTA 2 for a bit, just to see how it feels, but despite having played DOTA back in the day, I couldn't really get to grips with what was going on in that game
For League of Legends, my knowledge is basically years out of date, but I'll know a decent chunk of the champion pool and at least the basic jargon the game employs
Isn't like self deprecating humour about the LoL community like, a pillar of it?
It was when I was playing, did things change?
I don't know, I've not really been hooked in to the wider community as such. It's usually just a few friends, or myself playing solo
Makes sense.
LoL for a long while was my "get asleep watching videos of" game even after I stopped playing
Then it switched to Heartstone
ah yeah, atm the "get asleep watching videos" of game for me is Age Of Empires 2, especially when commentated
Do you still watch Heartstone?
Nah, for a while I kept going but after every new season I had to learn what the cards did to follow the videos, even if I wasn't playing
And it became way too much time investment for something I didn't even play
League is notorious
Lol is easier to follow even if you don't know every champion, as long as you at least know the point of view character
mhm, it's true
Especially during the lanes pahse
aye! though I kinda like teamfights too, it's easy to enjoy the casters excitement about healthbars being deleted
You can actually quit the game leave? About fucking time.
Several different ways too!
There's apparently multiple endings and that guy only found one of them.
I knew there was the ultimate objective of playing on all the maps in sequence and "escaping" but I didn't think there was a legit escape thing.
The actual ability to escape only got added in the 1.0 update last month.
I'm going to refuse to say the joke I had then for "escaping".
You can actually escape from tarkov?
i was watching the video where he escapes but didn't really get what was happening
The game did somehow (out of EA). /s
I thought escaping from tarkov is like extracting from tarkov
Honestly, at first sight, i thought escape from tarkov was all about escaping from tarkov not going into raids and getting loot and stuff
I love these comics

probably not

Follow these steps to update Mario Kart World, or review the software's update history.
Mario Kart World just got a pretty big patch
(Patch notes are on this page if you scroll down a little)
I mean it was bad, glad it's gone, it was an invasive extra step at the time that didn't need to be there but they generally worked
It was something that no one was glad it was there
Especially if the game in question was single player, so you didn't even get to benefit from the built in anticheat (which I seem to remember was one of the features)

...So... GTA?
I don't know if Nintendo's gonna continue to release games for both Switch 1 and Switch 2 but I would assume this game's probably gonna be pushing the Switch 1 hardware to its limits so yeah, longer loading times seems like unfortunately a major drawback from this version
but even still, I've had PS2 games load for longer before so I'm used to it
It does remind me though of the time where this would've been a completely different game back in the PS2-PS3-Wii-NDS/3DS era where games would release multi platform but they had to make completely different versions for each console
Star Wars The Force Unleashed had like, 4-5 different versions of the same game
I mean, 20+ seconds on the S2 sounds pretty long to me too
that's still enough that I'd be consciously altering how I play to hit fewer load zones
It does I actually don't know if maybe that's some quirk of early releases or if it actually will take 20 seconds to load on all Switch 2's
you're not a real metroid player until you notice one of the doors taking a suspiciously long time to open after you shoot it
I feel like in Prime 1 that was rare enough it felt like a novelty?
In Prime 1 on the GameCube that actually would happen quite reliably on certain doors to large rooms. Not every time, but often as the GameCube cleared out memory and spent time loading the data from disc. The door to the Artifact Temple is the most severe example.
As much as five-ish seconds at worst, I'd say?
The Switch Remaster definitely improved on this by virtue of having much better I/O
But yeah, even back then Retro did a fantastic job of optimizing the Prime games, it's rare to find a performance drop in them
Prime 1 would drop a few FPS sometimes for the power bomb's VFX, but it almost feels more like an intentional dramatic slow motion kind of special effect than a performance problem due to how minor it is
Yeah, that's quite long
Ohhhh, question! Question!
Is that from the Switch 2's internal memory or from the SD card???
That's a critical question since the internal memory is actually much faster than even the SD Express card, like more than twice as fast
And both of those are faster than the cartridge slot
(I moved the Prime 4 data to the internal memory preemptively for this reason and this just affirms to me that this was a good idea)
BotW/TotK running from the Switch 2's memory loads notably faster too, to the point where the loading screens are almost instant
Ugh, I'm too excited for 9 PM tonight
still two days for me
The longest loading time I've seen on Switch 2 from internal memory is from Animal Crossing NH and that tends to take.. eh, I'd say up to 10-15 seconds when starting up the game?? I could actually benchmark that real quick..
There was a day 1 patch for Prime 4 today. Along with some apparently typical stuff, the patch also added... controller rumble during cutscenes.
You'd think that would've been in 1.0, but oh well
Right now that's the only video comparison out there so we'll just have to wait, I'm going to assume it's SD card and not internal memory loading just because internal memory loading is always faster and I really doubt that such an early Switch 2 title would have long loading times for the more advanced hardware especially considering Prime 4 was built as Switch 1 game for a long part of its development so it doesn't make much sense to me
Right now it's 1m4s for Sw1 and ~24 sec for Sw2
I'm not sure Nintendo would let that fly
That would be kinda unheard of for the platform, I think
But a bunch of this information is coming from pirated copies, so who knows
I'm certainly quite curious to find out
I don't think it's pirated it's probably just an early review copy like Digital Foundry got
...I should jailbreak my Switch 1, it's just collecting dust as a wiped console at this point anyway
Ah
Digital Foundry also praised the game for having short loading times even between screens so no waiting for doors to open like in Prime 1 but that's on the Switch 2
Right, a bunch of journalists and influencers got early copies

Sorta out of laziness, but also out of "I can afford to buy games anyway, so I should support the devs"
also I didn't know the Switch even did that internal memory thing, I dusted off my PSP I've had for over a decade now and I remember all the time when I played on it almost every game had an option to install the game files for faster loading times
Bruhhhhhhhhh I didn't know there was an actively developed mech game right now!
Hecking rad
Well, also to avoid bricking too
especially Nintendo
it wasn't an issue for the 3DS when the eShop was still up at the time, people still managed to mod their 3DS super easily, but I would still imagine that for something like the Switch 1 there'd be more checks in place to make it harder to jailbreak or mod or at least detect that and possibly brick the device even more so now that most consoles are almost always online and logged in to some service constantly, but now that the Switch 2 came out and after almost 10 years of the Switch coming out I'd imagine they probably figured out a safe way to do it
Yeah, and your Nintendo account also runs the risk of getting banned. It has happened.
Also it's just fiddly to get all the files onto there when I could just download things off the eshop
The safest way to do it is to just run it as a cleanly wiped console and never tie it to a Nintendo account
Or just otherwise always offline
Switch 2 is interesting. The hackers who first tried to reverse engineer the console quickly found that the console apparently bricked itself when they tried to just perform volt measurements across the board? I haven't been following the scene, but my impression is that the Switch 2 has some new advanced tamper detection stuff going on
I kinda already have any Switch game I wanted to play anyway so that's why I'm in no rush to get Switch 1 to mod and I'm just waiting for when they're relatively cheap to get
I wouldn't expect modded Switch's to be able to play or go online until years and years down the line when they eventually figure out some way to host servers for modded systems specifically
Yeah. The Wii and 3DS online services have been reverse engineered and community services are running for modded consoles. I'm sure they'll try to do the same for the Switch eventually.
Heck, they even rivived all the Wii channels
And ported Japan-exclusive ones
There's even still custom servers for Gamecube games, when I was modding this Wii for my nephew and putting a bunch of GC games in there I came across Phantasy Star Online and was looking up some stuff about it and apparently people still play it online and there still are servers for it
Oh yeah!
so in a couple more years when the Switch 2 becomes the 'main' system I expect the Switch 1 to follow
I need to mod my GC for that
I actually just ordered a used GameCube since I have somehow lost another one. And was disappointed to find that it was the hardware revision version, so modding it is going to be a pain
I have to be more careful when doing modding like that though and make sure I'm not doing anything weird, because when I was putting some games on the Wii's SD card I don't know what I did but as I was creating a new folder to put the game in suddenly the folder already had a file in it with this weird corrupted name and it ended up corrupting and deleting the entire SD card
I had to re-format everything and put every single game back in there, dunno what happened but lesson learned, I won't let any SD or external hard drive go into the red anymore and leave some free space just in case from now on
I might just try to hunt down a 1.0 version instead
but next chance I get I'll try putting that game in there because it seemed like fun and it seemed like the exact type of game I would dump hundreds of hours into as a kid
I really want to get Picoboot or something going and then just load off of an SD card
I have so many Raspberry Pi Zeros lying around, I may as well
Huh, that's weird
Oh an actual Gamecube, I don't know how you mod those, I looked up PS2 modding once but I forgot how it's done, I wonder though because PS2/Gamecubes have all these peripheral stuff going on with the memory cards and the attachable expanded size disks and all, I don't know if it's done similarly to a Wii where you can just run everything from an SD card or an external hard drive that you just plug in there
it was pretty scary! But luckily I had a backup of the Wii's SD card files so it was just really tedious having to do it all over again (and set up the virtual memory card for every single game afterwards)
GameCubes, these days you have to mod by soldering a modchip into it. There are some special ribbon cables that will actually let you just kinda graft it on without soldering or very little solder, but those are tricky to get.
Oh old-school modding
You can use a ESP32 or a Raspberry Pi Zero or a similar cheap and small microcontroller to do it. Open source firmwares are on github.
Yeah, the GC can't be softmodded, really
It CAN, but it's always temporary and requires very specific games/action replay type things
And a bunch of faffing about
Not worth it
The only real answer is a classic modchip.
There are some that modify the CD reader directly or just remove it entirely and then an external device acts as an emulator for the disc reader, but that's considered an outdated method and isn't recommended
GC's anti-piracy check isn't too complicated, but it just takes some work to defeat it since the console itself is very barebones
I wonder if the actual GC has any difference with something like Nintendont on the Wii which is what I used to play GC games on the Wii because at that point if the actual games are the same and they run and look the same it might be cheaper and less of a hassle to just go with that especially since it doesn't require opening up the console to do anything, unless you just specifically want the Gamecube itself for whatever reason
The only drawbacks I can think of is there's 2 Wii models without the GC controller ports and I guess having to have batteries for a Wiimote is a bit of a hassle
I think PS2 can let you just run everything off an SD card? I haven't looked into it in a while either.
Luckily I got two original Pro Classic Controllers and Nintendont lets you use them for GC games so that was pretty swell
I think it's a USB drive
Me who's had their psp modded since like 2010 lol
for my PS2 i got the original network Adapter/IDE storage drive and a special boot DVD so it can load software off the IDE Drive
There are occasional very subtle differences between the Wii and GC. But the answer is baaaasically no.
I also have a modded PSP since the 2010s, I wanted to get a Vita for the past couple of years but they're so insanely expensive I can't justify getting one
I have two Wii consoles, but they both suffer from the glitchy pixel problem
there are probbaly a lot better PS2 optiosn now
And one of them suffers from unreliable video out
Is that with one of those HDMI adapters? Because those usually work really badly
The other is softmodded and chipped, but also suffers from quite a bit of glitchy video
Yeah, there's that. But actually it's the ATI GPU problem.
Mine has a 64gb micro SD in it and a rainbow dash sticker on the back of it lol
Where the motherboard overheats and cools down a lot due to WiiConnect24 and slightly degrades the console's GPU
So there's no way to fix it.
The glitchy pixels are just baked in. I have a WiiU that I've recently modded though, so I just consider that my solution for WiiU and Wii games.
I hear there's a way to get GameCube emulation going on the WiiU and supposedly it's very good, but just out of principle I really really want to have correct GameCube hardware to use.
So.... apparently there's a couple of ways, there's even a memory card you can buy that I guess just installs the custom software directly for you and does all the setup for you, but you can do it manually with a burned DVD and a USB drive, so kind of similar to how I modded my Wii but having to use a DVD too
ah, yeah, if it's the actual hardware then yeah
And yes for the WiiU it's the same as getting GC games set up on the Wii since the WiiU has an emulated Wii built-in I think?
I have some weird nostalgia for the Wii hacking scene. That was just fun back in the day.
So it's just a matter of setting up Nintendont on the virtual Wii in the WiiU and you can just play em
Yeah, the WiiU is literally just an upclocked Wii. So it runs natively.
Well, it's more than that, but yeah there's direct hardware lineage between the WiiU and Wii
The WiiU's pretty valuable now in that sense, you can basically play anything from the WiiU era all the way back to the NES on that thing with modding
Yeah I could buy that
It's basically like what, 5-6 consoles in one?
My WiiU has the NAND problem though
So I had to use redNAND
Where the system's firmware and internal memory bypasses the internal SSD and runs off of an SD card instead.
Setting that up was a pain... but necessary. It wasn't possible to softmod it otherwise.
SSD hardware failure is a deep systemic problem with the WiiU
Oh yeah I had to do something similar on the Wii, just backing up the NAND and enabling some settings with Priiloader/bootmii, luckily I didn't have to deal with any of those problems but it's just a backup safety thing that is heavily recommended to do everytime before doing anything
though... I think the particular model I modded is a model that can't be recovered with that bootmii method unfortunately like the original Wii model, but at least it has some sort of brick protection and I didn't brick it doing my modding so.... it's probably gonna be fine
but I did hear about the WiiU having problems like that a lot when I was looking this stuff up
Basically if you're not familiar, the vast majority of WiiU consoles out there have a faulty internal NAND that experiences permanent bit rot fairly quickly after the console is unpowered for a couple years.
just a bunch of compatibility problems, hardware problems, differences in how to do things depending on whether or not your WiiU is from like 2 years after the original model or what not
I have two of them and I think they're both of the same worst case lineage
I did hear about that too, some of the videos I saw were blown a bit out of proportion scaring people into thinking their WiiUs are dead and worthless now when it's very unlikely for it to happen and only happens to certain WiiU models but I guess better to scare people into checking than not letting people know
The black 32GB ones are the most likely ones to fail
Well... they actually CAN become bricked and unrecoverable!
Uhhhhh it was the Hynix chip ones I think
there were some black 32GB WiiUs that didn't have it, which are the lucky ones
True
and any other model I think doesn't have them so those are probably fine, but this is one of those things that can still happen anyways so... just charge your consoles and boot them up once every year just in case
But most of the time what will happen is partial corruption, where the console will appear to be working fine, but some random applications may not work correctly or game save data might be lost. How the bit rot happens is random and so how it will be exhibited on your particular console will vary.
In my case, mine appeared to be working just fine and as far as I can tell everything seemed to be working correctly.
But actually executing the softmod process does not work and it crashes, probably because it's attempting to write to some cells that aren't working.
So I had to dump the NAND, decrypt it, put it on a tediously formatted SD card, and go through a super tedious process of tricking the console into booting off of it by modifying the bootloader
And it... mostly works?
That took me a whole weekend
And a lot of AI to try to understand the obtuse instructions since the hackers didn't feel the need to document everything correctly or thoroughly
Not just FAT32, it also has to be partitioned in a weird way that Windows can't do. You need to use Linux.
That was easily the most painful console mod I've done
It's so easy to get it wrong and it's tricky to know whether you've actually booted off the SD or not.
I ultimately did it twice since the first time around I subtly messed up the process and implemented it in such a way that would wear out the SD card very quickly
I don't remember if that's how you do it for a Wii too whenever you have to mess with NAND stuff or bootloader, but when I was looking into all the Wii modding stuff I did come around certain things people did that required multiple partitions like that and I'm so glad I didn't have to do any of that because it sounds like an absolute pain in the ass
For the Wii, the only real bootloading shenanigans you have to do is modify boot2 with SaveMii. This allows you to recover the console from just about any brick.
You can also dump the NAND with it as a backup and restore it from there.
what I had to do was relatively super easy, it was pretty much just getting the homebrew channel set up, which luckily this Wii already did have it, but it didn't have any apps in it so I don't know how it was even working, I had to take the Wii from my nephew and bring it home so I could take a look at it and properly mod it and make sure it all worked correctly
after that it was mostly just installing the other apps required to get games running and backing up data, I didn't even have to install the cIOS the old tedious way and I did it the new way which is much easier, I even swapped out the external disk that was giving the Wii a hard time reading games because this hard drive had this super annoying function where it goes to sleep automatically, I know it's meant to be for keeping the data safe but it meant that the disk would go to sleep in the middle of loading games, cutscenes and what not, and it would just... freeze the whole console, so I had to make sure to swap that quickly and luckily the new external hdd I got worked perfectly and no more loading issues happened
Does anyone have any programming Discord servers they hang out in they could recommend? I need more tech spaces to chat in :<
Oh wrong channel
I mean could be the correct channel
I don't know if it's interesting to you but I actually had to go to the r/WiiHacks discord server to ask for this specific problem I was having with my external hard drive, it's more specific than just tech but it's the only thing I got
I was gonna try swapping out the external hdd regardless but it was nice to ask someone that knows more about this for their opinion and luckily that was the solution
At a certain point it just became fun for me to see how much I could put on the Wii and how complete I could make it, honestly I'm pretty envious of my nephew because I wish I had something like that when I was a kid
has like 100+ games from the Wii and GC running from an SD and an external hard drive so no fiddling around with discs, two classic controllers, some SNES goodies, you can even browse the actual game covers from the game loader menu too which is really fun
Me who's in like 100+ discord servers lol
most of the servers I'm in are just for emoji
im only really in servers i talk in
the servers I actively use would be 5-10, depending on how you define active use
aside from the Doom server and Joe Hub
This channel is for progaming, not programming
Clair Obscur is probably winning this one
Same. I'm in... a lot and I only actually look at three of them, this one inclucded.
Damn, yet more evidence that I might be mildly dyslexic /s
Alas
tbh my experience is that more "general" servers are... a lot more likely to be rehashing tired pointless arguments than doing anything useful or interesting
Having a space like Ponydevs was actually pretty handy since I could just bring up any obscure topic and people would actually understand what the hell I'm going on about
Yeah, that's true
e.g. these days most of the Rust programmers I know are the people maintaining the Outer Wilds mod manager
because that's the kind of server I actually spend time in
overclocking is a good way to avoid FPS drops in games, it's worth the effort
and you can get mods, install save files and so on
some N64 games with PC ports like Ship of Harkinian and Perfect Dark have ports for modded Switch too, which run a lot better than NSO
Oooo
Still no confirmation on who composed the Prime 4 soundtrack.
But it does sound similar to Kenji Yamamoto's style, which would be good news IMO
Saw FNAF 2 tonight
how did that go? no spoilers
Hmmmm I don't know exactly what would qualify as spoilers... It's at least about as good as the first one I think, but it's the kind of movie where it gets better the more you know about the source material, and I kinda stayed in 2015 with the fnaf lore so some stuff probably went over my head (that everyone else in the audience let me know because of course nobody would stop going "yoooo" and "oh my god"
)
I think that's probably the most non spoilery thing I can say, it's more of the same so if you thought the first one was good then this one's at least just as good (and the more you know about Da Lore and all that then the better it gets I guess)
||what did they use for the credits song ?||
|| what do you think
||
sounds like ill enjoy it then, I know all Da Lore

even if its bad ill still enjoy it
||TLT FNAF 2 song ????||
i like silly things
same
|| ye ||
lfg
I thought fnaf was already at a million
the 2nd movie
Oh, movie
It's not even bad, that's what I mean, it's a really fun movie as a fan, it's probably pretty mediocre if you don't know anything about the games and you're just watching it on its own but I mean I thought the same about the first movie too so that's what I mean about it being more of the same
They should have a crossover between fnaf and mario party
18 years of waiting finally at an end in five minutes
enjoy your temporarily superior time zone
And hope it doesn’t suck
can't be as bad as Other M
Yeah you're probably right
Bring forth Metroid 4.
Well that one's technically Fusion
☝️
also I kinda liked the gameplay of Other M
yoooo it’s out??
Running Switch 2 edition from the Switch 2’s internal memory, there aren’t any performance issues to speak of.
Running theory: Turning off the tutorial system will make the NPCs quiet down a bit
Yeah, it had some good ideas
Alright, that alleviates my concerns. This rocks.
I'm not into the Prime series but a streamer I watch all the time while I work on my art is gonna be playing it so I guess I'll get to see how this game is like
unironically
banger pillow design
especially since it's cylindrical
lets you rest the neck easier in you're a side sleeper (like myself)
Oh rip its on nintendo Japan's website
Seems to be newly added too
Hopefully
I gotta get the giant wiimote pillow at some point too
Peak pillow design
question is: how well does it hold it's shape after extended use?
Not sure
cus if it hold it's shape pretty well, goated pillow: if not, eh, I'd prefer a different pillow
THERE'S A N64 ONE TOO
I mean it's kinda practical
Especially for couples lol
2 neck pillows in 1
Yes
meh, looks kinda stiff to be used as a neck pillow
it'd be cool to use as like, a wall perch if you're reading a book or something: like a bean bag chair but... controller shaped
If only these weren't 300+ dollars lol
I can't even say "🫵 poor" because I too am poor
swappable hand (singular)

now I remember why this was such a pain last time; the upload requires switching my phone to the Switch's wifi, but then I need to switch back to real wifi to post the screenshot anywhere else

32-bit PhysX is back in select games on Blackwell GPUs
GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs launched at the beginning of the year, alongside the phasing out of 32-bit support for CUDA. This meant that PhysX effects in a number of older, yet beloved games were not GPU-accelerated on GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs.
We heard the feedback from the community, and with the launch of our new driver today, we are adding custom support for GeForce gamers’ most played PhysX-accelerated games, enabling full performance on GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs, in line with our existing PhysX support on prior-generation GPUs.
aside of the listed games, Arkham Asylum support will be readded in the first half of 2026
Ohhh yeah
Such a weirdly hacky thing Nintendo decided on
lol what
I gotta admit, it's really weird there isn't actually any music otherwise
In that scection
Looking at videos online
Makes you wonder if it's supposed to play another more generic track and you get the fancy one if you have the amiibo.
Wait actually listening closely there is some music, I think
It just sounded like an effect from the engine
The desert has ambient music
Still real sucks that they sell this stuff though
I hate when capcom does it, and I actually like those games.
It sure is a choice
Oh, looking around it's unlockable by ||100% the game||
At that point you'd have to wonder ||"why do you need it?" but eh||
Odd choice
yo say less
Oh, this is incredibly interesting, and I think this is definitely something worth discussing

Details on how the Game Awards, and other Awards show work
At the timestamp is the bit that was more interesting for me (like 4 minutes)
But the whole video is interesting
Game awards is only good for the game reveals
The awards themselves are always rigged 9 times out of 10
Actually, this goes in depth as to how it works
It's not actually rigged, it's just dumb
As in, the process pretty simplistic and some of the choices come out odd for that reason
Baldur's gate 3 winning instead of spiderman 2 in 2023 was incredibly dumb
For game of the year
Having played both, it really isnt
Baldur's Gate 3 is on a whole other level than Spiderman 2
Spiderman 2 is far above it
Spiderman is good, but Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the best games I've ever played
Turn based games are just ehhhh
Slow slogfests
Rather be straight in the action
Well, that tells me all I need to know
Plus the story of spiderman 2 is peak
What
Idk how people can enjoy turn based games
I mean, just because you don't like the genre it doesn't mean it's the worse of the two games
That's like, a 12 years old take
Baldur's Gate 3 has a much better story than Spiderman 2
lol
I tend to like action more than I like mob movies but I would never argue Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is better than IDK, The Godfather even though I despise mafia movies.
I would watch it much more willingly though (not that much more willingly, it's kind of a bad movie)
Isn't the godfather praised as like a top movie of all time by people lol
Yeah I did an extreme example, you can take a good action movie if we want a closer analogy.
Like Die Hard.
That's a good ass movie, I wouldn't claim it's better than The Godfather even though I would rather be watching anything that's not the Godfather pretty much at any point in time.
I have my own personal bias that I accept make me not like that movie, which is completely fine
-# the problem is that it insists upon itself
lol
That is true sometimes though
Sometimes movies think they are a lot smarter than they actually are
Or games actually
If you are trash and you know it you can be fun, if you are good and you know it, it's great, if you are trash but you think you are good, that's where "it insists upon yourself" criticism comes from
this is why i refuse to use assist modes
Back to this though, I feel like this explains everything about the Game Awards, like how games that came out too late last year, or very early in the year, or too close to the deadline ofter get snobbed.
there are definitely movies that insist on themselves, but Godfather is pretty straightforward about what it is and what it's trying to do; most of the subtlety comes from your typical character acting/writing and plot subtext (e.g. "it's nothing personal" when it quite obviously is very personal) with no deep lore needed to understand it
Yeah I wasn't talking about that movie specifically.
The fact there's drama at all is... depressing.
too late now
lol
TGA is just a popularity contest, tbf.
I mean kinda
It's a popularity context among the people they pick as "jury"
Which honestly, it's better than a popularity context among all gamers, but still not ideal.
I love your profile picture btw
to be even more fair, what even is the alternative to a "popularity contest"? games are pretty varied
Thanks, it took way too long for my meager artistic skill to make it happen
Like there's good coming out of it, like with the Megabonk dev coming out and dropping out willingly, and Dispatch's devs being fine with not being nominated... Both of which are secondary to the actual damn thing, which makes my opinion very clear on the whole thing
I like how the nice lady in the video described Baftas and how they do it
Let me link the timestamp for it
fair, I don't currently have time to watch the full thing
because gasp I have a new game to play

Then again, Gamers Being Upset At Thing They Like Being Snubbed In Their Personal Opinion is a "News at 11" thing for me at this point.
The bit I was referring to
I mean her point is that this show shouldn't be taken that seriously, given how they pick their nominees, and it's probably pretty true
Not that it shouldn't exist
That seems pretty reasonable, yeah
Which, fair take, I'd prefer something less... waves hands
I dunno how to word it, capitalist-ey? It feels like I look forward to it not for the actual "awards", but because it's a big draw for trailer drops and such.
Like it's the Superbowl of gaming, if that makes sense?
Wait
If you want something less capitalistic the Superbowl is exactly the wrong comparison to make
IMO
Hopefully there's actually some good game reveals this year lol
No that's exactly my point, lmao.
I'm comparing TGA to the Superbowl, but I'd prefer something less... Money soaked.
Oh, makes sense
IDK I like the reveals, if it was just awards I wouldn't be as interested in watching.
But I'm being pessimistic, like game devs deserve more cred than they get, even with stuff like TGA around
I'd do what I do with the oscars, I'd read who won the day after
Maybe watch one or two videos of victory speeches if I'm interested
Not like "Award-Winning" means shit anymore
Me and my sister usually sit down and watch it live
i love watching the game awards
It's kinda like a tradition at this point
and ykw? It brings you joy, go off
i listen to way too many Reddit podcasts that bring me joy in this hellscape

But no one know what it is for afaik

really cool
do they talk about the performance problems
My bet for this is Witcher
Oh, yeah that would make sense
The only "maybe not" is that W4 is still relatively far, but might be a big trailer with a release window
Why would the witcher put advertisement in the nevada desert
It's related to the TGA to my knowledge
Oh maybe i guess
Still weird
Maybe they have an external number there
I mean it'd be weird of any game company to construct this there, my guess the desert is just a convenient place with a lot of empty space where to put something
Unlikely someone will walk behind it as you film it for your big presentation
It's just a wild guess though, could be for anything else
Maybe new IP, that'd be cool
A few different companies have put stuff in the desert to promote their games
Concorde relaunch
POE2 just did their stuff for their new league and it doesn't seem to fit IMO
So it's probably no that
Demon's souls maybe?
Something from From would be interesting
I personally don't think it especially fits in any of the current IP iconography from their games
i remember the Fortnite stuff in the desert around season 5
Yes
If it wasn't for all the skulls around the statue I'd guess it would have been fort related lol
Cause the sphere thing in the middle kinda looks like the zero point and there being seven lines sticking off it
And geoff has been known to be involved with fort stuff a lot
for what it's worth, now that I'm far enough into the game to time some loads myself:
and it's worth noting that in context we're talking about a load/transition that I've done maybe 5 times in more than 5 hours of play, so while it's an interesting number, I think I can confidently say it's a complete non-factor in whether you want a Switch 2 or not
steam keeps failing to update this game. Is anyone else having this problem?
oh maybe it's just me lol

Also I mean yeah if a game is gonna have monetization its better that it's purely cosmetic only instead of having to pay to win or get boosts gameplay wise
With collabs Its like brand and character based clothes but in a video game
Purely meant to express yourself and show your support for a Fandom you are in
There's ways to show "your fandom" without shelling out for cosmetics or using psychological warfare to manipulate people into spending more money on a product than they "have" to, but whatever.
I've said my piece like 50 times before.
we've only come downhill from the Quake 2 era where you could download a cow to use as a player model. 😛
can't find any high-res images/videos of it, so this 2008 video will have to do
I mean with free games they gotta keep the game going somehow
Microtransactions are only an issue in paid games and if there are lootboxes
If it's a free game and it's purely cosmetic and you know the actual cost and what you're getting then it's no big deal
you're objecting to an argument they never actually made
let's drop it, all these topics have been discussed to death anyway

The bloodiest release of the year is here with Blood: Refreshed Supply available NOW on PC and consoles (for the first time ever!) including Xbox One, Series X|S, PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.
Blood: Refreshed Supply has been rebuilt using the game's original source code, featuring remastered cutscenes, a brand-new Vault with dozens of playab...
I believe this one more or less replaces the Fresh Supply one, except they couldn't make it a free update because it's almost entirely redone compared to the old remaster. The new one is based on the original source code, fixing a lot of the weirdness from the old remaster
The old one was like a best-effort reverse engineering when the Blood source wasn't available (or legally able to be used) at the time

what are some games you guys looking forward to ?
what is megabonk anyway
i assume you bonk people
Described as a 3D Vampire Survivors–like, it features procedurally generated maps, automatic combat against hordes of enemies, and character progression through randomized upgrades.
oh I see, megabonk is a unit of bonk measurement /s
Don't miss the Launch Trailer for Megabonk, a third-person bullet hell action roguelike developed by Vedinad. So the FNAF 2 movie is apparently suffering from exactly what I thought was gonna happen, critics and anyone looking for just a good horror movie are gonna be left sorely disappointed, anyone who's into FNAF is probably gonna really like it
....except even FNAF fans are apparently not liking it, which was not what I predicted
maybe I'm not giving FNAF fans enough credit, I kinda thought when they got to see the movie all the fanservice would completely override the thought of ''wow this is a really mediocre horror movie'', but I guess I was wrong, FNAF fans have more standards than I thought
they're growing up so fast
I was going into it with a really weird mindset because for me Sister Location is still ''the new FNAF game'' so I'm super outdated and I didn't keep up with the fnaf lore or fandom at all and I kinda didn't take the movie seriously at all from the get go because even though I wished it was this super experimental creepy unsettling horror movie I knew deep down inside it just wouldn't be like that especially after the first movie also wasn't like that, but because I went into it with that mindset I kinda took it for what it was
so it actually surprises me to see even FNAF fans ripping this movie apart
Most fnaf fans are adults now too, like the game franchise is over 10 years old
Yes I know, I was one of them who is now also an adult lol
I was like, eleven when FNAF 1 came out
pf yeah
my previous comment was only partially a joke
You know despite the fact that I hate the words ''analog horror'' and associate it with the utmost sloppiest slop content to ever slop nowadays, I do think it at least somewhat helped the FNAF fandom in taking the tone of the games a bit more seriously with how the franchise just shifted so fast into mascot horror after the original games were done, hell even at the tail end of those original games
The shift into 3D for fnaf just did not go well I feel. Plus with it being just a whole new developer.
I remember telling my brother verbatim ''I hope this one's more horror-y than the first one'' before going in to watch the movie
It wasn't
So now I'm hoping maybe the third one will be more horror-y than the other ones!
because there will totally be a third one
|| and if that complete non-ending is anything to go by I'm assuming the next one will maybe come sooner than later? the movie literally doesn't have an ending it just stops before it gets to any sort of meaningful conclusion which is the weirdest thing I've seen, it actually shocked me because it's the only movie I've seen in my life that straight up does not have an ending, so my only assumption is the next one is close otherwise.... yeah.... ||
which is a really funny thought to me because despite Scott Cawthon nailing the horror vibe for all the FNAF games and it being a big draw for FNAF fans he really doesn't seem to care to replicate that vibe for the movies, despite it being what the established FNAF fans probably want
it's really confusing but hey, this franchise is his baby and these characters are his OCs so I guess he can do what he wants with em
Honestly I don't know if Scott did know what he was doing that much in the games. Especially when you look at his previous games. I feel like it was more like, it just so happened that he did the right things at the right time
The story is the thing I hate the most about the fnaf games, it feels like such a mess, with each game just trying to add things on, it doesn't feel all too coherent and so confusing. Like I don't think much was planned from the start.
And then you go on to the story of Security Breach and like, they pretty much revive a character
It's not so much about the story more so the fact that he nailed a genuinely unsettling horror vibe with his games and yet he seems completely uninterested in replicating that same horror atmosphere for the movies
Also yes the plot of the FNAF games is a mess but I will give Scott points for at least doing something interesting with his storytelling I think by far the most fun part of being in the FNAF fandom back then was picking apart the story, people were actually paying attention and using their brains
True though yeah
And like yeah, at least in the first game, I feel like the horror of it is so perfect
2nd game less so, especially as nights go on they are just too chaotic, it doesn't have as good of an atmosphere to the game. And the horror sting that plays when they are close is just very annoying.
3rd game had it down so fucking good though, especially with you feeling so defenceless if he gets close, and trying to see him through the cameras
Also even in the first game, just the random sounds you hear in the background through the night as so scary
Fnaf 4 even had it good
But I think what makes those games feel scary isn't something that really translates to a movie as well without it being boring
Also I don't know just how much input he really has on the movie, but at least for the games he pretty much made them alone
I like my putrid ponies so much omg
There isn't in it yet but what is there feels so good
And when you look down you see your little hoofsies OMG
And if you walk diagonally for some reason you bounce and I can't stop looking at my hoofsies
I love when you are moving a box and you still do the little bounce

yeah, this is one of the reasons I stopped using HDR
I honestly can't wait
I'm sure they're gonna reuse enlisted assets
And i don't think it's gonna have gun research like enlisted?
It still seems like magic to me when I saw a video once about how this happens to HDR images on non HDR displays
I experienced it once when I was playing either RE2R or SWBF2, they're one of those games that asks you whether you wanna enable HDR from the menu or just has it enabled by default if your monitor can display it so I alt tabbed into my non-HDR desktop and I was flashbanged with super blown out colors and the contrast to the maximum
I thought my computer was broken

Well this joke was bound to happen
I will say one thing, it's actually wild to me how much more bearable this character is with speech volume turned off and subtitles disabled
SO MUCH BOUNCING
the red lines going to me is life drain, which isn't always easy to get
i do have a pretty insane build there

oh cool
We were allowed 5 votes for this award. I voted for E33, Dispatch, KCD2, Silksong, and Hades 2.
Shit, I just realized I'll be working when the show begins. Can people pleeeeease ping me if Spyro, Sonic, or anything RPG related shows up?
holdin out hope for spyros return

i dont remember who i voted for for players choice
i just participated in a project zomboid event lol
we were in a metro map, entirely underground
kinda just stumbled into a group of people, we set up base in a station that was FILLED with supplies of the construction and growing kind
not a lot of food tho
then the admins started filling the tunnels with gas, and we had to seal off a tunnel before it reached us
we had to mad scramble for metal, on the way i found a couple freezers filled with meat which solved the food problem for now
eventually found enough metal of various types and was able to seal the tunnel, just in time
we celebrated with salads that were mostly stale meat cooked in a microwave
looiks like we might be doing the next session next week?

Makes me want to play that game again damn
I never got it down well in singleplayer, but for multiplayer with others I did quite well
You know, if definitive edition came out today, I would honestly think that it is a fully ai made game. Like ai upscaled everything and ai code, surely.
I mean they did do some ai upscaling but I think that is all. Everything else is just wack.
Which does remind me of how wack things have always existed, ai just make it easier for people to make wack things

This feels so Gmodish and I love it
ooh, expedition 33 has a 20% discount
For those who come after who don't have it yet
Interesting you have to unlock easier options by playing on harder difficulties.
SO LAZY.
Actually that was more common in the old days
You had to complete very hard challenges to unlock cheats in 007 for example
Wonder what kind of stuff you'd get for beating the game multiple times with harder multipliers
Since your "Account Rank" (Save File) depends on your average "Weapon Rank" (Basically your overall all skill level across all weapons, based on what factors you've beaten the game with)
It was pretty bad back then that the people who needed cheats to see the whole game could not unlock them because you had to see the whole game
Made it harder to use cheats as an accessibility tool
unlocking GoldenEye cheats isn't that difficult, Perfect Dark is where it was really hard to unlock all cheats
(singleplayer is harder, and we don't talk about late simulant challenges' difficulty...)
And I know I'm using a lot of "air quotes" but it's just how the game words it, since Crab Champions is a paid-for game and "Account Rank" just sounds... wrong.

I appreciate the game keeping track of "Hew, here's what dynamic difficulty you've beaten the game on at X difficulty!"
i just wish it didn't sound like i was grinding out a MoBA
IS THAT A FUCKING STARFISH
It is. I now need to worry about dive-bombing starfish.
This game is peak.
I can only assume back then the "cheats" were intended for players who could do everything on standard but either wanted to goof around or skip certain parts on replay, but yeah I'm glad this is no longer how they design games
duh
when was the last time EA did good things?
oh the remaster of dead space, right
this is a really interesting time in gaming history where, even if you make a banger of a remake, and it sells well, and people really like it, and it shows interest for the franchise is still there, you still don't have a guarantee that it's going to go anywhere
ayup
same with Hi-Fi Rush, brand new IP, fucking crushed it, people loved it, it did relatively well, still wasn't enough apparently
Well Battelfield 6 seems to be a good game at least.
I know not exactly a lot of positives with EA
Oh right they published Split Fiction
That's about it
Well, it's just puzzling because when the company is blind to everything and completely money hungry you can at least expect something like this, where this re-release of a game did really well and people loved it, that they'd try to capitalize on that and maybe revive this franchise people really like, but we're at a point where they don't even do that anymore
It's kind of weird because I feel rather than keeping the IP burning a hole in your pocket, they surely would be better off at least licensing the IP to someone that wants to make a game for it.
so I'm just left thinking the people in charge are either comically incompetent at their jobs, or they're still stuck in 2020 and expect every game release to do COVID numbers when that's just not a reality we live in anymore
I mean that's what Konami is doing with Silent Hill essentially
They're not doing anything with it, so they're at least letting other people take a crack at it
It's the addiction to huge games that is the problem
If they make a game it has to be a huge AAA title.
If it's a huge AAA title it will cost a lot of money.
If it costs a lot of money (and keep one of their studios busy) they'd rather develp a live service instead since the return on investment on those is better*
*assuming they succeed and don't crash an burn in the first 4 months.
A mid size game, with a mid size team, they can sell for a decent return is not what those devs tend to do fund, not anymore at least
I'm on the fence if I feel like I want to fault them for it lately, because Ubisoft did put out an amazing Prince of Persia spinoff which is exactly what I'm talking about and it sold really badly apparently
Maybe those smaller titles is not what people are looking to those huge companies for, maybe there is some truth in them wanting to only make huge games, and if they are gonna be making those they are always gonna look at the safest bets
Prince of Persia kinda hasn't been as relevant as it was once and also metroidvanias always tend to not be super mainstream contrary to what Hollow Knight/Silksong may lead you to believe, also requiring a EA account for that game is a big turn off for people like me who just don't wanna deal with that, but it is disappointing that they didn't just do one good PoP metroidvania spin off, but two of them (though one of them is more of a roguelike than a proper metroidvania), and none of them really had any buzz surrounding them, nobody has talked about them, I only knew about the Lost Crown game because one of the streamers I watch is a huge metroidvania fan and he played it on stream and it was incredible
But basically I wouldn't only use PoP as an example here because there could be other factors there to have made those games not really generate a ton of discussion around them
Well the Ubisoft launcher thing is a thing for all their games right?
And it is for EA as well?
Or EA did drop the Origins obsession?
Well it's not called Origins anymore, EA launcher I think it was last I checked
It is, it is, granted I don't know how many people just put up with those launchers nowadays but I'd imagine it's still a factor towards someone getting or not getting the game
I just wouldn't use only PoP as an example of this sort of mentality being a complete failure and I'd still want more companies to try it because wanting to only make bangers that sell millions and pumping as much money as possible into every game you make is just not sustainable
Lost Crown is honestly one of the saddest stories in all of this
it's legitimately one of the best metroidvanias in the last few years
weighed down by all this, uh, industry context that has nothing to do with the actual quality of the game
From what I saw of it it looked like a fantastic game, the other PoP spin off also looked pretty good, but for some reason nobody talked about it and I guess if I looked into it I'd find out why but right now I can't explain why
I didn't look at the other spinoff myself, too many damn games
The other spin off looks fun it's more of a roguelite platformer than a proper metroidvania, it has a fun artstyle and it looks really fun
More evokative of the original Prince of Persia games for sure
The Rogue Prince of Persia
yeah, it's the kind of thing I might try if my backlog was 10x smaller than it is
It stings because it's what I've been saying that the devs should do with the IPs they don't want to make huge blockbusters for
that's why I'm so sad about it
So now I shut up about it until I see someone succeding with that strategy at least once
they did literally everything right according to what people like us are always saying
at least with the actual game
but they're not going to perceive the launcher/DRM situation as a loss of sales (and who knows to what extent it really was)
and the lack of marketing is one of those catch-22 arguments where neither side can ever prove they were right
I mean, to be fair
If your main target audience is people that played the previous Prince of Persia
And to play that one you had to have an EA account already
nope lol
That likely wasn't the main issue with it
well I guess it depends on what you consider "the previous" PoP
Wasn't that already past Origins release?
this is one of those series that has a bunch of mobile spinoff titles that fans often completely ignore during discussion because most of them are not worth talking about
uh
we're talking about PoP, not AC
yeah 2008 was the last PoP that I cared about
The third person PoP games were always more popular, I think people just chalked both these spin offs as exactly that, just random disposable spin offs when they're interested in that Sands of Time remake that will probably never come out
I though it was 2014 at the latest
which is unfortunate because Lost Crown is arguably better as a PoP game if you consider that it's keeping that same style as the original game
but the official list has up to nine games since the 2008 one, although I expect you'd agree with me in ignoring most if not all of these
Yeah for sure
I'm not even sure if this is true tbh, I keep hearing about how PoP died and then came back and then died again
AFAIK I'm the only one who played PoP 2008
I guess maybe the problem was in large part that.
The Ubisoft installed userbase didn't fuck with PoP that hard, I mean I guess they have the stat on the prople that bought it post propietary launcher release, and it must not have been zero, but definitely didn't know how many original POP would make the jump over to that.
And the main "Ubisoft fans"
I mean those that play all the Far Cries and Assassins' Creeds, aren't there for smaller games, they are there for the blockbusters.
I certainly wasn't the target audience when PoP: TLC happened
I did play it
(I was when AC1 and 2 came out, but that was a long time ago)
I don't know about that reboot in 2008, but those games from Sands of Time up until like... Warrior Within? Or Two Thrones, I cant' remember which one was later, those were pretty big from what I recall
I remember almost nothing about it but I remember playing it, I don't think I finished it
yeah Sands of Time was the only one that became an immediate trilogy, so I always figured that was a hit
not to mention the whole "literally every AAA game's platforming system is at least 50% PoP:TSoT moves" thing
Yeah
ironically when I tried Warrior Within I got bored and then stuck almost immediately
We have all been playing Prince of Persia for years
so I've effectively never played WW or TTT, just the original TSoT
(I've also never played any of the original original 2D pre-2000 PoPs)
Same
it's just this super weird franchise that produced multiple great games but also provides little to no reason to engage with the whole thing
it's like the opposite of Metroid: nearly every Metroid game is a should-play or a must-play for genre fans, because they just don't make another one until they're sure they can make it good
and almost nobody has been imitating specifically Metroid enough that Metroid itself became retroactively unoriginal
I know we talked about this, but I really think that to bring the 3d one back they do need a new gimmick.
They stole their platformer mechanics so hard and it was THE main thing for that game, they'd have to reinvent the combt or innovate again on the platforming in a way no one else did, and man that would be hard to do.
and 2008 tried
as much as I love TSoT and 2008 in totally different ways, 2008 had no impact
I remember back in the day seeing very little about that 2008 game I think I looked it up sometime this year and I remember reading mixed things about it, obviously it wasn't the big hit they probably thought it was gonna be but I remember seeing gameplay of some platforming sections from that game years ago and it looked pretty cool?
I think moving to 2d was actually a genious move, it sucks so hard it backfired
but I'm not a Prince of Persia expert
none of us are tbf
I only know this very specific subset of PoP that I care about
(partly because I'm confident all the other PoPs either aren't that good or were good but didn't age well or were some random genre I don't play)
I think the problem with 2008 is that, since Warrior WIthin PoP had kind of the reputation of "hardcore game" for the platofrming sections, with all the trap and that.
It wasn't, but it had the reputation for it.
2008 paid because it wasn't focusing nearly as hard on that being the case, it softened the difficulty a lot, and it wasn't what the fans of the previous two games were expecting as a result
(like roguelite
)
huh
none of that matches with my own memories, but it's not like I have any better theories
tbh I'm not sure 2008 really needs an explanation; it's not like tons of people played it and then decided they hated it, mostly people just ignored it like most games that come out most years
Well it's not like it likely matters anymore, that Sands of Time remake isn't coming out anytime soon and I don't even know if we're ever gonna see another PoP game at this rate
honestly I'm not even sure I want a SoT remake
that other PoP sidescroller certainly isn't doing more numbers than Lost Crown to guarantee another PoP game
we've had so many remakes of games that I don't feel like I've played 20 times since under different coats of IP
I don't think anyone really wanted that Sands of Time remake to be quite honest
I remember finding it to be a really random decision when I heard it was going to be a thing
But who knows, there was also that rumor of AC4 getting a remake too so maybe Ubisoft wants to get in on the remake thing
It's kind of wild because PoP was once actually a huge IP, EA really just waited a few too many years to make something with it I feel
and the jury's still out on how many Resident Evils they can get away with remaking
I remember the OG Sands of Time
Keep in mind, it got a fucking movie.
and Warrior Within
they definitely waited too long yeah
It was a bad movie, but all the game movies were at the time
I have no idea if general audiences were even aware of it by the time TLC was getting made
Remember when Ubisoft put out the AC movie
In 2016
I think I almost watched it
I don't even remember what the 'main' AC was at that year, Syndicate?
I did watch it
Nobody cared about that one
That movie should've come out like 3 years earlier at least
I have a friend that was (and still is) a big AC fan, so it was an obvious stop for a weekend
Oh right, I watched it IN THEATERS
I suspect AC cannibalized most of the industry/audience niche that PoP had at its height
TBH I don't think it's as bad as people make it out to be, but it's bad for very interesting and noticeable reasons
AC did kind of completely overtake PoP, which is funny considering the origin story for AC being a PoP spin off
that's always a fun situation when the game that was a spin off gets more popular than the original thing
kinda like Persona
Nier
lol
To be hones though, Drakengard could be as big as Nier, well maybe not, some of the themes are a bit...controversial, but I still think the main problem is still that all drakengard games are currently terrible to play because they are too old.
The Lost Crown sounds like something that 1) I would never actually want to play because Metroidvanias and things with precise controls are very much not my thing but 2) I absolutely want to play because of my great interest in and knowledge of Persian history and mythology
would Capcom ever remake Resident Evil 5 or 6
ah yes, the historically accurate King Darius boss fight
the funny thing is TLC unironically has the most legit Persian mythology in its story and setting of any of the PoPs I'm familiar with
They did kinda want to bring in more of that Persian mythology for this game and the aesthetics
e.g. I had never heard of Mount Qaf or the Simurgh before but basically the whole game is about them
which I think is cool it's an unexplored aesthetic in media
I mean it's Prince of Persia, you can't expect that much. But having the Simurgh show up in something like its actual mythological role, for instance, is super-cool.
Not saying Greek or Norse isn't cool but definitely could use something else
I remember when Age of Mythology had this chinese mythology expansion which was really cool
yeah, part of why Nine Sols hit me like a truck was that Chinese mythology was brand new to me
Yeah, nothing wrong with those but everyone in the Euro-American(-Australian) world is pretty familiar with them through osmosis, if nothing else. You know, foundations of Western civilization or something...
(More so for Greek than Norse mythology, but it's revealing that Edith Hamilton included Greco-Roman and Norse mythology, and only those mythologies, in her book Mythology...in 1942)
It's kind of funny that the Resident Evil series went
RE4 -Completely new gameplay loop.
RE5 - That gameplay loop but we are essentially a B movie now.
RE6 - Terrible fucking game
I was kind of worried because then they went
RE7 - New gameplay look
RE8 - That gameplay loop but we are kinda B-movie esque at times
And I was expecting RE9 to be dogshit again, but it looks good, I'm happy they were able to not repeat that mistake.
RE9 looks cool i hope it's good
I feel like Japanese mythology is also semi-well-known due to how influential Japanese culture has become, especially in gaming. Chinese will probably get there because of how gigantic China is. Mesopotamian, Iranian, and Indian(/Southeast Asian) seem like uncharted territory...
ironically I'm unsure about Japanese because, while the culture is absolutely super highly represented, I'm not sure how many games really dug into the mythology beyond a handful of passing references. Okami and more recently Bo are the only two games that jump to mind for me.
Silent Hill f might count
That's why I said "semi," I'm also unsure of how deeply people in general go.
But hard agree that the middle east to india part of the world is underrepresented. Also Africa. I've never seen African mythology in a game.
But I figure it does lead to a bit of osmosis and general knowledge of major figures and "types"--like a lot of people probably vaguely know who Ameteratsu is, in the way that they vaguely know who Zeus is, and they might have heard of, e.g., kitsune the same way that they definitely have heard of e.g. werewolves.
If these things show up in a game, it isn't something completely new the way that e.g. Eshu (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eshu) showing up would be.
Èṣù, also known as Ẹlẹ́jẹ̀lú, Olúlànà, Ọbasìn, Láarúmọ̀, Ajọ́ńgọ́lọ̀, Ọba Ọ̀dàrà ("who has his abode at crossroads"), Onílé Oríta, Ẹlẹ́gbára Ọ̀gọ, Olóògùn Àjíṣà, Láàlú Ògiri Òkò, Láàlù Bara Ẹlẹ́jọ́, and Láaróyè Ẹbọra tí jẹ́ Látọpa, is an Òrìṣà/Irú...
that's so many names
For those that want to dispute that RE8 is a B movie, you have a ||chainsaw duel on a tracked "mech"|| towards the end
You can see American Indian mythology in games! For example, https://pinnguaq.com/stories/explore-the-world-of-inuit-mythology/
fair, would be nice in a bigger hit
(I assume Black Myth Wukong had solid Chinese mythology rep but ofc I haven't played it)
I've never seen African mythology in a game.
Oh there is a metroidvania based on that, I didn't play it though
Tales of Kenzera
huh, this does look like something I should play
2024??? how did this make none of the metroidvania lists I was specifically checking the last few years
On steam it has very positive so it seems at least okay
I looked at it and looked fun, but I eneded up never buyiing it because it looked like it was maybe a bit too colorful, I was concerned it would be hard to read the what was happening on the screen
By the gameplay showcases
fair enough
South american mythology, incan/maya stuff would be super interesting to see in games
Oh you want that
?
Play Path Of Exile
There is TON of south american inspired mythology there
You say that. I've recently worked on QAing the localization for that
Or the new content, rather
The Vaal which are essentially a precursor civilisation in Wraeclast, are HEAVILY inspired by the Aztecs
And I mean heavily
It's not their mythology in a strict sense, as in it's pure fantasy
But there are quite a few inspirations from there.
I did have to use cheats to test stuff so I probaly missed most of it

If it's POE1, there isn't that much that is front and center except ruins, unless the season league is focusing on them, and in the later acts of the story
POE2 has a ||lot more of them directly involved||
Yeah no, completely different games

But I understand the confusion
Those two look the same to me
All the games in the genre are just trying to remake diablo 2 but better for the last IDK, 20 years
Grim Dawn had an interesting urban but post magical apocalypse setting
POE2 is so blatant about it that their 2nd act is in a desert zone, and their 3rd is in a jungle
petition to rename the genre to "Diablo-likes"
Hm. Was D1 the first ARPG, or was there something else that fits the bill? Probably was the first big one, at least
my understanding is that "A(ction) RPG" has effectively been redefined to mean "Diablo-like" since the old meaning of "RPG with real-time combat" has ceased to be a meaningful genre descriptor after the great dilution of "RPG"
so whether Diablo is "the first ARPG" becomes a very weird question of retroactive semantics
clearly we should call them Real-Time Classic RPGs or RTCRPGs
Zelda seems to be somewhat of a stretch, perhaps, as before Diablo crystallized the ARPG genre, this seems to cover other "RPGs"
Yeah I would have guessed that they were the first to do it that way, especially combining the dungeon crawling with the randomised loot
Wait, were even there magic items in Diablo 1
to put the terminology confusion into perspective: remember that when I was a teenager, Kingdom Hearts was my first "action RPG"
I think there were magic and uniques but those were the only 2 categories?
I don't remember rares being a thing
Ah, king's sword of haste and godly plate of the whale
Common (white) and magic (blue), with some uniques I think too
I am sure of the uniques because I remember the crown of King's Leoric or some shit like that
