voyager? wow ok
This actually looks kinda cool
Yeah. It’s does look interesting
Star Trek Voyager: Across the Unknown is a story-driven survival strategy game in which the fate of the iconic starship is in your hands. Take the helm, manage the ship and resources, and make difficult decisions. Will you be able to bring home the ship and its crew?“What if?” ScenariosDid you ever wonder what would have happened had Captai…
Coming soon
Oooh, okay. So it's kind of a management sim
Yeah this is looking pretty slick judging by the screenshots.
does this mean we actually have to count the torpedos now
And the crew
Because there's no way that the crew remained 150-ish throughout the whole trip
Like half of them died, lol

how many times did harry kim die? we had quantum ships, clones, all sorts of bullshit
also hey we can promote harry from ensign
(i dont know probably not)
Yeah, it looks like you have to maintain the ship & can build/replace components and rooms. Then there's timed quests and narrative events where you have to give orders.

this is sounding improbably like "FTL but with a AAA budget"

FTL is tons of fun, very difficult to win
I always thought of it as the most Star Trek-y non-Star Trek game I played and liked (how often can you actually "reroute all power to shields"?)
and one of the first big roguelites, back when that wasn't even a trend yet
Speaking of which, one streamer I was watching had the FTL soundtrack loaded into Rimworld while he was playing with a gravship.
btw have you played https://store.steampowered.com/app/527100/Star_Trek_Bridge_Crew/

nope
that might be why I didn't
First look at the Rainbow outfit for Batman
it is really fun tho
I'd have loved to play it, but I don't have VR.
-# Or friends
you can play on a TOS based vessel and... I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT ANY OF THE BUTTONS DO
oh you can play without VR
its just better in it
Just press every button until you get it right
see that would make sense in most games
but bridge crew requires you to do precise actions mid-battle
otherwise you die
What does this button do? ships blows up
well no, you just fail to fire missiles or send repair crews to the right sub system or not redirect power to shields
[Eject Warp Core]
I’ve seen gameplay of it just never played the game
i dont htink you can do that :(
aw, Steel Battallion had a big red eject button
do kids still know what Steel Battallion was
never played it unfortunatly
yeah, the proper experience is not what you'd call "accessible"
if my sibling hadn't been such a huge mech fan I doubt I would've

One of my favorite horror movies
I have. I think you don't need VR to do it, but it feels better in most things with it.
I can fix one of those.
You have a spare VR set?
god i wish
my vr is borked :(
one of the lighthouses is broken
still its an orignial vive that i got for £30
I have a set that I haven't used in a while, but the game is much cheaper. There's another one that is trying to be grander in that approach too.
It'd be funny (and a bit cruel, admittedly) if you were allowed to promote every other member of the crew all the way up to Commander, even Neelix, but Kim in the game is programmed to never go above Ensign, and if he somehow does, the story gives you a narrative option that forces you to demote him back to Ensign.
that would be the best feature
the higher hes promoted the worse things go for the rest of the ship
There's a way to make it worse.
At certain points, characters can ask if they've earned a promotion yet, or your senior officers can put them up for promotion. For these moments, you can look at their accomplishments and either agree or disagree with the promotion. No senior officer will ever put Harry Kim up for one, and when he eventually asks, you don't get the standard agree or disagree options. You just get "OK" to close the window, and it's never brought up again.
this is gonna take a whiiiile
approx 100xp per match and i need 14k just to level up to 67,and the needed amount increases with each level so its only gonna get worse

shit would be hilarious
sheer entertainment from silksong cope is so much better than what the game could ever be
don't worry, even if it does come out, you'll still get a flood of "Silksong's okay I guess but it's not curing cancer" and "was Hollow Knight ever that good" and other emotional reasoning

Starting now.
when i was on the tbfp subreddit after the deadpool announcement that apparently drove the HK community insane lot of people were sayin there's a very possible massive wave of disappointment coming if Silksong genuinely doesnt cure cancer with the amount of hype it's built up lol
which is exacerbated by how silent the devs are on its development
i don't know when but the Godzilla DLC for Dave the Diver is bacccckkkkk
I’m not sure any non-silence by the devs would’ve been better
still, if anyone does come here to whine about Silksong, I’ll have a whole list of “other metroidvanias you should’ve been playing” ready to go
and Nine Sols, and Ori, and Grime, and Yoku, and Guacamelee, and…
it’s so pretty
though I’m currently getting my “so pretty” indie vibes from Sword of the Sea
Yeah, but I don’t care about any of those because they don’t have Hornet
can i get a true
True
Its time.
The countdown is on!
Join us in 48 hours for a special announcement about Hollow Knight: Silksong!
Thursday 21st August | 7:30 AM PT | 10:30 AM ET | 3:30 PM UK
I hope its good lol
I remember when Duke Nukem Forever came out and nobody gave a shit
DNF had a leaked version that's arguably better than the final game (well, what was completed and restored by modders at least)
the final game is a bit better with community mods, but still not amazing
in short, you'll have a better time replaying Duke3D today
but yeah, I think the Silksong jokes went way too far and people are going to be disappointed (or delusional about it :P)
Yeah im afraid a lot of people are going to let the memes and hype color their expectations
even Counter-Strike 2 which is mostly a tech upgrade ended up being way overhyped for what it is
You don't have to consider what people say
(source: I was a bit too hyped about it too...)
TIL there's a Counter Strike 2
I'm just expressing a desire for people to not let their hype runaway
Ive done it before. I've been ultra hyped for something only for it to be crap
It's a shitty feeling
I still have the demo of Forever on my PS3 From years ago
my father bought DNF on release
as someone who played Duke3D when it was fairly new, he was quite disappointed
I do own the full game just haven’t played it in a long time
given Team Cherry's past behavior, Silksong being bad seems astronomically unlikely IMO
the far more likely problem is people hyping themselves up so much that even a perfectly solid game disappoints them
I'm more familiar with the hype-memes than the actual games
especially if it's meaningfully different from Hollow Knight, in ways that make some players reasonably prefer one or the other, like how Doom 2016 and Eternal and (I'm told) TDA were all different
Sometimes I wish I liked Metroidvanias, they seem like on paper they'd be great for me
Which is extra weird because I loved Metroid and Castlevania on NES
could be a sign that genres defined by game mechanics and core gameplay loops are not the primary factor in whether you personally like a game
wouldn't be the first time
CaptainMario — 9/26/23, 19:12
i guess i haven't played too many 3d platformers excluding Mario. i tried Hat in Time and got bored, same with Spyro (sorry GT) and Crash
oh, I tried one Shantae game and thought it was mediocre
I played like four and they were all like that
My conclusion is that people like them because boobs
to be fair, I did think the humor was on point, but that's too small a part of the experience to make Flitter even slightly incorrect
I think there's a few speedrunners who enjoy the gameplay... but they are playing a different game lol
I definitely like boobs but it wasn't a significant factor
yeah, lots of games are better or worse as speedgames than as normal people games
The rougelike Pokemon speedrunners are built different. Idk how they enjoy the RNG casino that is that mod of pokemon hahah
i think the last time i was this excited for a game was TotK, which exceeded my expectations
hype is fun to partake in! hope you enjoy the game Captain
I find it harder and harder to get excited for games
Stellar Blade players: First time?
Cap: yeah you seem to be pretty good at hyping without the downsides
I played Heavy Metal: FAKK2 a few months ago and heh, it's almost a Stellar Blade prequel on this aspect
The last time I was locked in on hype was Pokemon Sword/Shield
I learned a very important lesson
these days I only get excited for games from indie studios I can reliably trust to produce something that, even if it doesn't utterly change my life, will at least be good and different from everything else I've played
(which this week is Sword of the Sea)
(and, admittedly, soon will be Silksong; Team Cherry still falls into that trusted bucket)
Is that related to Sea of Stars at all
nope, it's by the same devs as Journey (and Abzu and The Pathless, but Journey's the one most have heard of)
Ah I'm unfamiliar
it does take some effort and risk to find indie devs you vibe with, but it's worth it, especially if you feel like you're missing something from the games you are paying attention to
There are a few reviewers who got to play Silksong early. I didn't look too deeply into it, but the initial impressions I caught were that it's very much "more Hollow Knight", like a very very big expansion that's probably at least as big as the base game, if not bigger. That's roughly what I gleaned
Just to set expectations. It's not an entirely new game
I'm definitely expecting a sequel
it would be strange to not expect a sequel to be a sequel
I think the only game I've been "paying attention to" outside of FF14 has been... DK Bananza? And I already know its good and what to expect; there are unlikely to be negative surprises
Yeah, but, you know, hype tends to do things
true, Nintendo is another dev that's reliable in a lot of ways
Nintendo rarely misses with their main titles
They're the Disney of gaming; they make fantastic products but I hope a natural disaster strikes their HQ

kirby air riders looks so fun, but like, Switch 2 prices are kinda nuts
and the products they make have just the right mix of familiarity and novelty and generally accurate marketing that everyone's already figured out which franchises they like and whether they should be paying attention to the next installment
I literally buy nintendo systems specifically for Smash
like how I'll play some Marios and Zeldas, but I'm never gonna 100% those franchises, yet I have played every single (real) Metroid game
fair enough
Uh
these games are system sellers for a lot of people
gift link from the guy who wrote this article on the silksong development situation
were you expecting that to embed lol
i mean yeah
I should look more into indie games
if you can say more about games you do like, and particularly why you like them, we can probably help suggest stuff
e.g. there's some very well-liked indies with Pokemon mechanics
BREAKING: Silksong will be out on September 4. Two weeks from today. Really.
Often, games that take 7+ years to make are plagued by mismanagement and painful burnout. But for Silksong? Team Cherry was having a blast. They still are.
This is their story: www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...
-# Why ‘Silksong’ Took Seven Years to Make
The highly anticipated indie game has been in production for so long that it’s become an internet meme
1135
2542

okay this one does
If there's one thing I suck at its explaining why I like something
it takes practice
the devs were blissfully unaware of how bad the community got, because they were staying off the internet and were just working on the game
Being a weird, introverted quasi-hiki with massive anxiety doesn't help
there are games about that
Might be too close to home
yeah, I like it when games can get me emotional, but that's clearly a higher-risk proposition for you
I would like to say, I called the two weeks time frame between the trailer and the releasw
Last Epoch (Diablo-like ARPG) is launching season 3 with a dinosaur theme in 1 hour or so
I'm so excited to try the new combinations, builds, and items
Exacly what they did with HK
(just now got time to get to my phone, was deadly busy
I find myself bouncing between FF14, Master Duel, and recently I best BOTW again but I've been filling that with retro games again
yeah, i expected it too
Celeste and Balatro have been on my list potentially
As far as recent indie games go
celeste is really really really good
I need to get over my fear of spending money
i like celeste a normal amount
-# i got 202 berries recently
it's also completely reasonable to wait for one of the big Steam sales, and pick up a bunch of "everyone loves this but I have no idea if it's my kind of game" indies for 2 quid each
I always miss those
Or when I do notice its like the last day or it's a bad time to buy games
Steam Autumn sale is 29 of September - 6 October if you'd like to put it in a calendar or something
steam wishlist will give you notifications for when games are on sale
(I have like 50 games on my wishlist I should probably clean it out a bit...)
you can check steamdb to see what the cheapest sales have been historically
seeing how small Team Cherry is when i watched the Hollow Knight credits recently, reminded me of when i first completed A Link to the Past and like, 10 developers worked on it. it's crazy lmao, these games feel enormous and then have super small teams
it also shows just how much better game dev technology has gotten since then
Bigger teams come with a tradeoff too. The bigger it is, the more it has to be managed
Oh I didn't know that
wishlists also make it really easy to go "Oh it's a sale day. open wishlist, sort by discount"
I put near zero time into strategic game discount hunting, unlike some people here
I didn't know steam had those features, I should wishlist them when I get home
I wonder about the price now, we don't know that yet right?
these days I think nearly every e-shop/e-commerce site has something similar
even the streaming services I'm subscribed to let me add shows to my "watchlist" before they're released
Huh, interesting
HK being 15 bucks was kind of insane for its size and quality, I expect a hike for silksong, of how much it's hard to say
(for all its faults, capitalism is very good at developing tools to make it easier to decide what you want to buy... so you end up buying more things
)
cough
gotta take the Ws where they exist
You have no idea how wrong you are
im expecting 25-30 dollars maybe ?
I had to go to my hospital in person because they refused to mail me a bill for some insane reason
Like do you want mu fucking money or not
i forgot how cheap Hollow Knight is
oh that's what you meant
I mean let's be fucking honest, I'll pay it even if it's higher, but yeah 30 bucks would be around the market price for these kind of premium indie nowdays
that's... a very different set of systemic incentives than what I was referring to
it took them long enough to release Silksong that inflation alone justifies a higher price
💀
Yeah, but hospitals aren’t really capitalist
LMAO
They have a captive customer base so they don’t need to care about inducing you to buy more.
probably best not to dig into the economic theory on this stuff
That's not really what that means right?
By that logic someone selling water in the desert ad a massive price wouldn't be capitalist because they have a captive base.
If anything they are more capitalist
Yeah probably
as much as I love the theory, almost nobody uses "capitalist" in a neutral theoretical sense any more
There are other factors involved, I was focusing on convenience. Your example also involves someone who does not need to make it convenient because everyone has to pay them anyway.
Gotcha
maybe you were trying to allude to the concept of a "natural monopoly"?
(for the non-economists: utility companies are usually natural monopolies, and that's part of why utilities are often heavily regulated if not outright government-managed)
anyway we're supposed to be freaking out that Silksong is real
look into IsThereAnyDeal, it's better than wishlists for sale tracking as it tracks other sites too
I would too prefer to talk about games and not economics
it's the site that pushes me to impulse buy games these days
I'm just surprised TC actually stuck to the "shut the fuck up friday" policy for 6 whole years and didn't actually break, they even kept the 2 weeks announcement thing.
I would have at least expected one communication when they missed the 2023 "semi announced" deadline
fair, I've completely forgotten what was going on in 2023
I think it was Microsoft fault someway that it happened so I get why maybe they didn't feel the need to explain
I don’t expect to buy any more games for the foreseeable future since
- I don’t have a job

- I have a ton of games I haven’t played or haven’t played enough;
- I don’t spend that much time on games now anyway.
im still getting emailed about pathfinder wotr sales because ive been too lazy to go log back in and change my watchlist since i havent been buying games hahaha
I wish Balatro still had a downloadable demo
but it is a massive help to have those sale notifications, everything centralized in one place
instead of regularly checking gmg, humble, etc
Does Celeste have a demo? I can't remember
dont thjnk so
Damn

playing Infinite Wealth was a mistake
Just
I think any plot involving Altzimer's is going to be a fucking knife to the heart.
OH NOOOOO
I'll respect the fuck out of the game for going where it did with that
But damn, not a good time to be on the Wizard Whiskey
I am kinda scared because the only reason they at the time stopped working and finished hollow knight was because they almost ran out out of all Kickstarter money , but in Silksong they had no money problems and they deadass....just kept working and working until they thought it was enough
Just....how huge is this game going to be ?
I am genuinely happy that Hollow Knight fans can finally rest easy knowing that Silksong is almost here, but damn it I would've died laughing if they announced another delay. I would've screamed with laughter so hard that my windows would've shattered.
i'm going to blow something up

oh, what makes you sure?
(is this a rare case where it's actually worth reading the article)
look nobody remembers the Sega 32X game Knuckles Chaotix unless you're into very dumb and niche topics like bad consoles and weird obscure games
Not really, this more has to do with what they released for splitgate 2 (and since unreleased it) was terrible, whereas 1 was quite popular. Even if they're not hosting it themselves, having player hosted version allows the game and company to stay in the awareness of the public
I owned it.
and it was super fun
the hate for it is unreasonable
You remember the"make fps great again" hat guy, that's the splitgate lead
never heard of that, is it as bad as that implies
from what i've seen it's a... unique game to say the least
pretty much, yeah
iirc the guy got called out for it, and he doubled-down and just dug a hole deeper for himself
Splitgate 2 released with the usual microtransactions, but a few had huge price tags. He blamed it on a guy that had recently left the company... but he'd brought that guy in from I believe EA
And they added a battle royale mode as the main feature when splitgate 1 didn't have that and people never asked for it
FPS as in the genre or the idea of frames per second
sounds like a textbook clueless exec move
the genre

genre
he went on & on about how he will never apologize for wearing the hat...and then in the end he made an apology statement

Bellular made some videos about it, one two months ago when things first started going wrong and the most recent one last week
meanwhile I've never heard of Splitgate before, and all of this being what y'all want to say about it tells me the actual game is of no interest
Ixrec: the hat itself actually seemed to be the least of the problems. It wasn't a good look, but the cavalcade of bad decisions and reception of the game was wholly unrelated to the hat
Ixrec: oh pretty sure it wouldn't be your style. Think Halo PVP with Portals
as in, portal the game portals
Neat concept and it does look like it would be a lot of fun, just not for me
yeah, since you said fps and battle royale I'd already put together that it was a multiplayer fps
But yeah, the videos will give you all info you'd want, hence why i'm pretty sure that its splitgate 2's terrible performance that is the leading decision behind the change to 1

More subnautica 2 shenanigans. Apparently, Unknown worlds, the DEV STUDIO (not publisher) are suing the former studio execs for stealing documents and sharing them with the press.
Shenanigan: they are being represented by a certain lawyer firm. The same firm that is representing Krafton in the suit where Krafton is defending themselves against the allegations brought against them by said studio execs.
High chance this is a sympathy move tactic by the lawyers, as Krafton 100% owns Unknown worlds, and so they can make this move

um... is there somehing here or am i gaslighting myself? just like, the platform here is making me think there's something here...
That whole situation with Subnautica 2 is so cursed and confusing. It's effectively killed any hype for the game.

Not any harder than they already suck normally, this is my most hated area of this game by far, but I understand the whole idea is to navigate the narrow passageways with monsters that take up most of the space, I just seriously messed up the first time by going in the direction of the big arm instead of the smaller one where they can't reach you
I also had to reload this part and i have to do it again anyways because I had too many items in my inventory so yay
Yo @astral bolt, I know you liked Hamilton quite a bit, this gacha game apparently released this piece of music which has very Hamilton vibe.

Evil Gay Catboy Hamilton is surprisingly solid.
the actual luckiest G2 fight I've ever gotten
first he grabs me and didn't slash at me which would've killed me, then I got lucky enough to get the full damage of the spark gun and stunned him mid lunge, then I waited just enough to stack up the damage of the spark gun with the damage from the container to kill him
had to redo the entire sewer section to get to that too since on the original save I had used up a lot of herbs and ammunition
also oh no, jacket-ception
for some reason I had to activate Claire's jacket-less look on the menu instead of the game just doing that automatically
Ah, yes, only the purest and finest copium
Biggest cope I've seen in a bit😭

Aaaaarrrrrgggghhhh I hate the AAA-industry
If they put all those millions into a bunch of AA-games with creative freedom, we would have gotten such a wave of gems
to be fair, the business premise of live service always was one of churning through several projects because when one of them does hit it should pay for all the failures and then some
but yeah even that plan fails when market saturation means none of them ever "hit"
I'm mostly speaking out of selfish interest. I miss the way huge games were designed during the PS2 era so much
and I'm not at all one for live service games. I've got neither time nor energy for that.
same, that entire genre(???) has been of zero interest to me from the start
but the kinds of games I do want seem to have been picked up by the indie scene in the meantime, so I'm not "missing" much either
I'm not sure I'd call it a "genre" so much as an "architectural decision". You could conceivably have live-service games of wildly different genres, e.g. FPSes (obviously) versus RPGs (well that's just a MMORPG, isn't it?) versus space sims (Elite Dangerous) versus city-builders or strategy games.
Just to name a few.
tbc, I agree, but people sometimes call it a genre and that's not totally wrong, since there are a lot of design tropes and traditional genres that tend to go hand-in-hand with live service-ness
it's like how "horror" is often called a genre even though, especially in video games, it's obviously not a description of the core gameplay loop that we normally use to define a game's primary genre
or like when someone says they "don't like mobile games" as a sweeping generalization, referring presumably to all the things mobile does far more often
I don't like mobile games because my phone's screen is too small
There are mobile games that work great on a small screen
in my experience, the only genre that I would say does not suffer at all from screen size and touch interface limitations is the point-and-click (tap?) puzzle/adventure, especially when it's an indie game with some stylized aesthetic that doesn't require high fidelity, such as Monument Valley
Yeah
most of the mobile-specific game genres I've heard about, e.g. infinite runners, don't feel like a truly new genre that happens to be unconstrained by mobile platforms, so much as e.g. what happens to platformers once dumbed down to the point that mobile can handle it
I like Desktop Dungeons. If your screen is really small you might suffer a bit, but otherwise it's deliberate and well-designed
it's very similar to VC startup funding
the invested money that goes in failed projects would have been paid in taxes anyway, and there's a small chance you fund a massive success
lmao black ops 7 will no longer have carry forward with operator skins from bo6
Way to make bo7 even more pointless
Activision: "Some of you have said we’ve drifted from what made Call of Duty unique in the first place: immersive, intense, visceral and in many ways grounded. That feedback hits home, and we take it seriously. We hear you."
I mean, it’s a military shooter… but I do agree that Black Ops has zombies so there never really was any ‘realism’.
Honestly I want BF6 to come out already.
"We hear you. We're not gonna fuckin do anything about it because it's less profitable than celebrity and meme skins but we hear you."
I mean clearly they're doing something by not making the operators transfer over
I'm pretty sure they're not gonna put the collab skins or goofy skins in bo7 at all
Time will tell, I suppose.
Okay so maybe I misinterpreted that and they mean that because BO7 will be more realistic and grounded they are separating it from the wild nonsense in 6
so I stopped paying attention somewhere around blops 1.5
what do they keep doing to make new games out of this sub-sub-subgame
not much, minor changes at best, sometimes some movement changes that are... hit or miss. Campaigns are different, but that's also hit or miss depending on what type of player you are.
I actually did quite enjoy the BO6 campaign. Still disappointingly short but fun and engaging
People buy it the same way they buy FIFA,
if new itteration comes out
then Buy
End if
Also I lucked out and got the glitch where the game gives you like 9 billion in cash so I immediately could get all campaign upgrades
Probably gonna end up being the least sold cod game because this change lol
Most people generally only play bo6 and warzone for the bizarre crossovers
Like I had bought the beavis and butthead bundle in warzone and bo6 and played for a good bit because of them being added
Same with skeletor
now that you mention it, maybe these "annual update games" were the precursor to live service games
The glitch apparently had 2 variants. One where it gave you billions, another where it gave you negative billions
Understandably, the positive billions glitch is more fun
When they patched it they said everyone who got the positive billions could keep it. Doesn't affect online at all so it makes sense
Makes sense to me, I mean, they all partake in the same lineage as the granparent of gambling HQ, mtg. Same set released with a new coat of paint and slightly different mechanics each season, gamba for pieces, and basically interchangeable
I think someone just looked at that monetisation system and went, "why not videogames like that"
and I never got into TCGs or sports games either
Probably the wiser choice. Boardgames are the better buy for physical IRL play anyway, specially bang for buck
Black Ops 6 is kinda dogshit, so I'm not really excited for Black Ops 7
granted I never did much boardgaming after moving out (don't have anyone irl to play with)
aww, that's a shame, Boardgaming can be a lot of fun.
in my case it's more that I seem to have been born without the gene that makes gambling in any way appealing
even before bringing in any morality or risk aversion
Despite other addictive tendencies I have never felt the gambling itch
the only "gamble" I'm interested in is buying and playing a game to find out if it's any fun
Losing feels bad, winning feels good, I do not feel the loop that makes people play over and over
yeah, part of making a game fun is making losing either feel good or not really happen
Y'all are lucky lmao. That said, I found outlets for my RNG joy, such as ARPGs, Terraria, Vampire Survivors etc
Ixrec — 6/18/24, 23:27
for me the litmus test for a potential new favorite game is if the boss fight vaporizes me in two seconds and my immediate reaction is "yeah, I can take that guy"
I wish I could grind the hours like my friend can. Idk how they maintain focus over 2+ hours a session, but they do. Maybe it's the ADHD meds they take?
at least for me it also depends heavily on the game
You can have ADHD and hyperfocus on some things
Medication makes it possible to focus on other things
I'm pretty sure part of the reason I gravitate toward metroidvanias instead of, let's say, pure combat or pure platformer games is that having that mix of different kinds of gameplay allows me to shift mental focus and have just the right amount of choice over what I do next in the game (without becoming overwhelming or simply mandating a walkthrough like more complex genres do)
Furi's easily my favorite "pure combat" game, though I'm pretty sure I originally played that in much smaller chunks than most games for precisely this reason
If I did try to spend 2+ hours on a single boss fight I would eventually get sick of that and want a break, no matter how much fun I was having (and I've recently re-confirmed this with some Nine Sols challenges). I've done far longer gaming sessions, and they always had more variation.
hmm, I don't think its possible for me to induce hyperfocus, so ah well.
Yeah fair enough Ixrec
that's like, warframe grinding. Since the game rewards doing one maximally profitable activity non-stop in-order to get the new gun/part/warframe it's easy to get sick of it... unless you hyperfocus, i guess.
I suppose it's not a bad thing that I don't hyperfocus, much as it may feel bad to compare "progress".
if there is a metric worth comparing, it'd be fun per hour or per dollar, but of course we can't quantify fun (yet???)
interesting, but I doubt it's static? It's probably a changing curve, maybe you could read the area under it and come to an average, but that would be inaccurate too
it's also far more variable than a single number
like how I'm particularly happy I got to play Sword of the Sea before Silksong came out since those are very different games
(though I do want to go back and search for the other hidden collectibles...)
hmm, is it a different type of fun, or a different timbre of fun?
"They strike the same note, but no one mistakes a trumpet for a violin" sort of thing
maybe both? I'm not sure how to read that without "type" being a supercategory(???) of "timbre"
but backing up for a second
what I meant by "if there's a metric worth comparing, it's fun per ..."
is that there is some value in noticing things like "I consistently have more fun playing genre A than genre B, and the prices and lengths are comparable, so I should just play more As"
the real conclusions are usually more complicated than that, but every so often it becomes clear that someone isn't even asking these questions, and missing some really obvious optimizations like "my favorite game is an X so I should try more Xs"
yeah, fair enough. I imagine with enough time, you'd get exposure, (not just via playing, but videos, word of mouth etc) to enough genres to have a vague idea which one tends to have the most Fun ROI... though using ROI in a sentance like this makes me wonder if I went wrong somewhere lmao.
Like how movie goers know that "i like horror flicks, but not action" etc
as long as we keep in mind it's not a simple number, I think it's fine; the concepts still apply loosely
I played a bit of it, it was great
but I didn't have time to finish it before my game pass trial ended
in my case I think I went out of my way to try most of the major game genres back when I was a teenager just getting into video games, so I can still point to things like "yes I played Smash for five minutes, but how to not suck at the game never really clicked for me" or "Age of Mythology was fun once but I never understood it deeply enough to have more fun than A-move and watch"
move and watch
game and watch
hmm. that makes sense, though I wonder if you ever pass on games that have that kind of skill wall to get into.
Like, I'm really bad at fighting games, but I love to watch pros play, and even struggling to fight CPUs is fun on occasion.
Whether I should just stop playing games I don't get quickly is a question I don't know the answer to.
but how to not suck at the game never really clicked for me
it takes a year at least, nobody has picked up the game quicker than that for serious competitive play
it's one of those games where you'll be bad at it for 500 to 1,000 hours
at least theoretically, it's pretty inevitable that we'll all pass on games we would've enjoyed, or drop games before we figure out how to enjoy them
but I've also tried these things enough that I'm pretty confident I have the rules of thumb worked out
I myself am just starting to not be terrible at it 😛
for example, I am never going to spend 500 hours continuously on the same game
I barely have ever spent 500 total on a single game
it's just not how I engage with entertainment
I have spent over 500 hours on it by now, but over the course of 1.5 years. I still play other games, it's just one of my "forever games" at this point
so genres where everyone agrees you need that kind of upfront investment, yeah, there's pretty clearly no point in me trying again
it kind of replaced CS for this, which I only play occasionally with friends now
we did a bit of CS yesterday and despite not having played for 3 months, I still top-fragged most games
Different approaches for different people. I guess my family member is one of the Shopping for 500 hours types, given they know the price of garlic from 3 different shops and have worked out how to know when nearly anything is at "going rates".
every so often someone talking about an MMO or a 4X strategy game will say something like "of course it takes a hundred hours to figure out if the game's any good"
and I'm just

it's a bit like TV shows where it only gets good from the 4th season or so 😛
I have rarely seen a MMO where the early game is super fun
Fallout 76, oddly enough is pretty fun in the early game. ESO... I didn't enjoy ESO from the start so maybe others can speak to that. WoW felt really dull, but people love it so I'm sure some people must have. Warframe was fun, fun enough that I played solo for a long time. It was a much smaller game at the time, idk how well it's integrated all the new stuff it has now into it's "early-game"
I've also heard that MMOs in general but WoW in particular have changed a lot since release, in ways that often makes the early game worse for novices
if only because there's so much total catch-up to do
hmm yeah could well be. I k now they sell boosts, so they have the incentive too
how is FFXIV's early game in 2025?
🍷 Ah, If only I could explain the finer vintage of a game cooking narrative as part of a live service MMOTPS over 10 years, and seeing it blossom.
I suspect that's part of why people stick with them so long, they get invested.
I bounced of FFXIV twice, idk if I was playing it wrong, or if the early game is just as bewildering as it ever was.
"getting players invested" is certainly what the companies funding these forever games are trying to achieve
personally that premise just makes me want to come back when it's done and I can experience the whole story without enormous waiting periods
Yeah, I guess it's like brand loyalty building, just for game titles
probably the closest I've gotten to playing any of them is watching all of the Uma Musume and Arknights animes, but even those barely tempted me to get the actual games
I suppose it's the same with books right? they charge 30 AUD a book, and if it's good, you buy the sequel hoping it's also good, and if you're good enough, you write the Wheel of Time series.
I should eat ice cream.
seriously, how the heck did I manage to dissapoint myself by thinking about how bad a deal books are?
At least Libraries exist? sigh
I feel like I should take the jaded "Art has manipulated me into enjoying it" line seriously, so that probably means I need to take a break and come back later, when I'm not in a bad mental headspace. Have fun with games y'all.
Well, yes and no. On the one hand, resale shops and libraries have existed for ages for a reason: for a lot of people and a lot of books, they just read it once and not again. On the other hand, if you do like a book and reread it multiple times or do things (marginal notes, highlighting) that would be unsuitable for a book you intend to resale, then owning it is very worthwhile.
ARR? like base game until heavensward
it's pretty slow and not the most exciting last i remember it until near the end, but imo it takes after that point for the jobs to be super fun so u have to be kinda into the story
i think you can boost past it idr but it skips major setup of that ongoing story going into all future expansions
i love it after that point but ya most mmos dont have compelling early games, which might also just be a general rpg issue with weak early games, slow burns that can turn into something incredible if you get super invested and that's thekind of people it's made for
but also mmo fans tend to just also be super into the slow grinding process, it's kind of a dopamine treadmill or giving people something to do that's less of a choice and more part of their daily routine that kind of feels more cozy
general consensus i thiiink is that ffxiv has a weaker early game than most other mmos and it's largely an issue eith having to have remade the game entirely from 1.0 -> 2.0, eventually grows really strong later on and is one of the best onwards
Oldschool Runescape has a good early game and a good late game
It can and often is played as a single player game through ironman mode (where you can't trade)
I stopped playing FFXIV in Heavensward, cuz I was getting a bit overwhelmed with trying to learn how to properly play jobs (classes) in it
ah that reminds me, ffxiv is basically a single player game thru a large chunk of its story content so that expectation of it being an mmo, being able to play with your friends, probably made a couple people bounce off realizing that wasnt really possible outside of the occasional dungeon
they do havr a notorious piano keys kinda meme surrounding them later on, i enjoyed the engagement but it's not super accessible i can imagine aha
just to be clear i absolutely love ffxiv ahaha i think i sound too negative
I lovw FFXIV lol
Another reason I stopped playing is because I was on PS5, and wanted to play on pc, but the only way to get my PS5 character over was to buy the game
I didn't have a pc when I started the game

unfortunate
i thiink you can plug in a mouse and keyboard and play it on the ps5 like that?
Yeah you can
I could maybe just speed through ARR on a new character, cuz I wasn't very far into Heavensward
But idk
My sister also seems to want to play FFXIV, so maybe we could play it together
Sounds like a response to BF6 and how the presale is doing better than their product for now.
Also greed.
Ok so, something really funny just happened
IDK if any of you are aware of what Duet Night Abyss is, but it's a Warframe clone that it's anime, that is supposed to come out in a few months, the main difference is that it was supposed to be a gacha game.
The devs came out and explained that they essentially wont be a gacha, and decided that everything will be earnable in game and they'll just monetise skins.
Now, the funny thing is, youtube recommended me various gacha games content creators that were talking to their audience about it, and it's surreal.
They treat it like a revolution in the genre, moterfucker, that's just a normal game you are describing, they have been here for very long.
hahah omg
It is funny that this company is being heralded as visionaries now for just like...making a normal ass live service game, it's excellent
This sector of players have been held hostage for so long that they couldn't even fathom it
is the game any good? I've not heard much about it
No it's a live service game
?? So is runescape, live service or no a game can be fun
I don't think a game that sells cosmetics can be enjoyable
I'm not following, what about a cosmetic store ruins a game for you?
It creates a strong incentive to barrage me with advertisements while I play the game, for one
Yeah, having ads interrupt or otherwise show up during gameplay would be pretty annoying. I suppose for me it depends how much advertsising and with what frequency
Do you pay the subscription for Runescape? or do they not really advertise it in-game?
osrs is free isn't it?
part of it is free I think? It's been a long time since I played
They have/had a membership with a larger world, more quests and exclusive skills
it's like, 75% of the game or something behind the subscription
I do pay to play the game. They don't advertise for anything because I already paid
ah never mind then, had no idea
It was very annoying to play the free to play portion and I did not enjoy being advertised to
What makes the subscription model worth it if the free to play portion was so annoying?
It's a good game, and paying for it gets rid of the ads, leaving you with the good parts only
The monetization is set up in a clear and fair manner. There's only one purchase to make: the subscription
(don't confuse Oldschool Runescape with Runescape. The latter has very bad monetization)
There is another runescape that isn't oldschool runescape? could have fooled me lol
There's several!
1- Runescape Classic. This is the second iteration of the game, discontinued. I don't even remember the name of the first iteration.
2- Runescape 2. It evolved out of Runescape classic. Also discontinued.
3- Runescape 3, the current and modern game we have today with lootboxes and microtransactions up the wazoo. So many that the company is trying to pivot to having fewer microtransactions.
4- Oldschool Runescape, which is based on a 2007 backup of Runescape 2, made popular by player demand. This is the one I play. You pay a subscription to play it, players vote on whether features should be added to the game, and if a feature doesn't get 70% approval, it doesn't get added. This ensures some greedy decisions are not available for the parent company to make without serious consequences.
Nowadays RS3 and OSRS are developed simultaneously and have evolved the same world in different directions
next up: WoW Classic
fair enough. On the cosmetic shop side of things, I don't know what I'd end up playing if I stopped playing games with MTX shops. I already discarded all the games with lootboxes, and that curtailed my options a lot, especially to play with friends.
That's fair. I usually play indie co-op games with friends but you can't pick the games your friends play
yeahhh, I don't tend to enjoy the particular varieties of indie co-op my friends play so I only really get to join them for Titles like big ARPGs, various FPS games or an RTS or two rarely
I kinda got burned trying to keep up with the indie titles
because they'd play for a week
and then move to the next one
At least with the bigger games, they tend to stick to them long enough that I can get some time in.
yeah, actual co-op is almost never an option for me
You may benefit from finding additional friends who play and enjoy the same things you do
No idea, it's not out and I don't trust gacha gamers taste on quality, but the gameplay looks exactly like Warframe except it's cute anime girls.
Aren't you just describing warframe? Cute anime girls are a thing in it now /despair.
Approach them, stand beside the exiled.
Bask in the twilight and journey through the endless night.
Together, we shall face the future.

I love the slide into the bullet jump immediatly
It activates the warframe part of my brain, which is scaringly large
Takes way too much space
Yeah as I told you, it's anime girls Warframe
Not 1 to 1, of course, but like, let's say they wear their inspiration on their sleeves
yeah i had that really funny epiphany asking the question and seeing the same jump/dash animation as is in warframe immediately upon clicking
to be fair, gacha games have a long history now of shamelessly copying a familiar gameplay loop and mostly just adding the gacha girls on top
which, for all the genre's problems, is not a bad strategy
I mean I don't mind them copying warframe, there are worse games to copy and it seems like they are also not doing gacha so I can't really be too mad
Correct. I just don't want to go through the whole finding --> screening --> hoping process. It takes a lot of time, and I don't know if I need more friends, or just need to adapt to the ones I have.
They copied warframe so much they changed monetisation to mach it
it's like how licensed games got way better when they realized putting a Batman skin on a well-designed game is a superior strategy to trying to tie in to some specific movie release
oh right, it's gacha without the gacha
They should make batman with boobs
I mean we have several of those
It's so funny, all those videos saying "this gacha games won't have banners for weapons or characters, AND will not have stamina and you will be able to play as much as you want"
Needs to actually be Batman
i know kotobukiya does a lot of famous slasher killers but with boobs maybe they can do it
as anime figures but like
it's funny
It's just a normal game, why are you describging it like that?!?
looking at xenoblade 2 and wondering why i have to wait 2 hours for some mission thing and roll blades like it's a gacha game
n that was a full price regular game
You know they are cooked when the closest equivalent is if you ask Susan how the new boyfriend is going and she says "Going well, he doesn't even beat me"
What the fuck was happening with the previous boyfriend Susan? Something is not adding up here.
It sounds like alien corpo exec speak
Susan doesn't do boyfriend a/b testing
is susan in the room with us right now?
"Hi I'm Susan, I'm currently testing for boyfriends, and you are in category a, I'll be testing you on kindness, friendship, honesty, loyalty, laughter, and generosity. Bonus category for not being a violent dickhead"
This boyfriend's key performance indicators are very poor, especially for mean time between dates
lol
Susan in my analogy is how Gacha gamers speak of this new game that was supposed to be gacha but apparently removed all of that shit.
Churn analysis indicates brad is likely to dump Susan within ~68 hours
Instructions to Susan “Go get him! Dump him! Banish him! Get rid of himmmmm! Put the nose on him and remove himmmmmm! Come on he’s out front, break him!” (Referencing that Fighter Pilot training video)
I am curious about what you were thinking though
My thought: Why do gacha games show off all these cool characters and cutscenes and look artisitcally GREAT but they're just wasted on peadatory practices???
My thought 2: Duh, that's what draws people in, then they've gottem

Yeah, pretty much, unfortunately
Well yeah, they do awesome stuff with the character to get you to buy it
It's just like, marketing, you are correct
I hate being correct
I can't speak too much; I spent $6.50 on Yugioh the other night
To be fair though, sometimes they do get out some bangers.
The story is rarely worth it but I fuck with Gay Catboy Hamilton
Or gay pirate theater kid
It's also the same reason why I refuse to play League of Legends, because while it isn't a Gacha and it has fantastic character designs and an awesome world, the game itself and the community it has are veeeeery toxic and addicting in a bad way, and it exploits that toxicity for all its worth by adding to it.
IDK why it's always male characters where they do the best stuff for
Maybe they think they need more of an help
Given the fanbase will buy female characters no matter what
Trust me, most men do
Like, I am not a huge fan of gacha, but I do follow whenever they put out new music shit.
The music is pretty solid, yeah. Genshin Impact's soundtrack is phenomenal.

I swear these people aren't real
If there was a sector of youtube that could be automated by AI very easly, is gacha youtubers
Gacha without Gacha?
Some Garfield minus Garfield type shit
This game sounds like a Trojan Horse to dismantle the gacha industry.
My guess is that if it's good it will hurt most major gacha games, most players are largely looking for the aesthetic rather than liking the actual gacha monetization and if a good chunk of them start getting their fix of that in DNA bypassing the price of admission which is having to deal with the horrible monetization, I feel it could actually hurt them quite a bit
Honestly crossing fingers for them to succeed
makes you wonder why they aren't playing all the "normal" games filled with anime girls
yeah like neptunia
the horse girl game is big rn
To be fair, there aren't many anime games where the point is to collect characters that offer the open world typical of most modern gacha games
that's gacha isn't it ?
Yrah
speaking of gacha
i have 900 gems on yugioh master duel, so i'm gonna go make someone uninstall then contemplate buying packs
Pokemon is specifically on that one platform
But you aren't wrong that it's kinda like that
Master Duel has a problem with fomo cosmetics
It's not egregious but it's a little annoying
But luckily there isn't any fomo on actual cards, barring promotional alt art
Gacha games generally make of a science out of fomo
The ones I've seen don't even bother having much cosmetics, people are already maxed out getting actual characters
are gachas typically open world now? i thought that was like a new development with mihoyo taking a bunch of inspo from breath of the wild
Yeah breath of the wild is an open world game.
What I've seen still follow that formula
they do like that a lot w these games dont they
Yup, i noticed
I've been looking at Wuthering Waves and the outfits are kind of outrageous
I'm glad umamusume is basically, like.. Not allowed to do that unless the real owners say yes
Played WuWa when it first came out, it's a good game, i don't know if that's the case now though
It's a good game from what I gather, these games are usually pretty good, it's the monetisation that sucks
If you can look past
I'm still F2P for the most part I've spent more on roblox than i do gacha games
I remember seeing lots of mentions of Wuthering Waves when reading Lossless Scaling reviews last year
it's literally how I learned about that game
also, I've once heard the argument that Gran Turismo is a gacha. Think about it for a minute.
(especially GT7)

I mean...
It's since the playstation 1 that I don't play a Grant Turismo
I definitely don't know enough about the mechanic to make a call on that

Smash players are apparently angry over a Melee mod being paywalled.
Listen, you can't actually put out interesting stuff when Silksong is about to release, that's cruel
it's not new, we've had paywalled mods for years (Animelee DBZ edition, the replay takeover thingy, etc)
Apparently, Smash players are fine with playing for Slippi (A modded Smash Melee client), but a Balatro themed G&W mod is making people go up in arms
legality is debatable (like for any mods!), but Nintendo hasn't sent any C&Ds specifically to paid mods
(tho TBF it seems like Slippi has optional donations, as opposed to the Balatro one being paywalled )
and like
Ehhh, I can see the argument, but like, I'm 90% sure Slippi is maintained by a team, vs. One Guy just making mods for fun, so i don't think it's like, the same thing.
also people on The Bird Site complaining about paying for a mod when they pay for a Bird Site subscription, L M A O
Slippi has a Patreon for ranked, joining it allows you to play ranked at all times instead of only 25% of days

free days have lower-skill players, but "lower-skill" is very relative, even Bronze 1 players are monsters by casual standards
like yea i give money to a billion dollar corpo, but one guy spending a month making a mod and charging for it?
HERESY
the expression "Bird Site" makes it sound like a lair of Falco mains
(I'm not any better, hi FFXIV subciption)
context is important in this case, it's one guy spending a whole aaa month figuring out how to do the thing, and even released documentation on how he did so to help others Do Similar Things.
-# also this is Smash, honestly they have as many braincells as Melee has functioning mechanics
plus there's no reason to like, pay for a month, get the mod and dip if you're really that bothered
is it rly just G&W with balatro skins? or is there more to it
fuck if i spent a whole month of my life doing something, I'd want to get paid too
What's wrong with paying for a mod?
paid skins aren't unheard of in Smash modding, some people even take commissions to create custom skins that are never released anywhere
#gamingshorts #melee #ssbmemes #smashbros #smashmelee #supersmashbros #ludwig #nintendo #mariobros #ssbm #gaming #donkeykong #mango #hungrybox #fox #gamecube #falco #dbz #marth #dbz #shorts #smash
i'd say this is worth $5 if you like Melee enough to mod it to play it competetively
Feels icky
Like, I get the idea of mods being paid for can be a bit icky, but I think it's similar to comissioning art.
In what way? Can you elaborate?
No, i can't
... Though some years ago I was on the other side of the fence about "Patreon exclusive artists", so maybe i'n just dense
Well, the way I see it is that a mod takes work to make, and good work should be rewarded, therefore it's fair to charge for it
i dunno, is paying for Touhou fan-games bad?
Spending money also stresses me out so I try to avoid doing it when possible
Fair.
That's a separate problem from paid mods feeling uniquely icky when other paid things aren't
I mean, I suppose an original game based on an existing IP is different from modifying an existing game...
eco
Like, even aside from the fact that it's paid, it's a purely cosmetic mod.
No it isn't
it's like paying for a skin in a f2p game, but the skin is fan-made
eh, whateva, it's your money at the end of it all, vote with your wallet, but don't like, tell a small artist to off themselves because you don't want to pay $5-10 for their hard work when they're just trying to make ends meet, or something
Yeah it is. You don't talk about how paying for videogames feels icky. Instead you say it feels bad to spend money
What the fuck i never said anything like that?
If you say things but don't take the effort to explain what you actually imply, people will likely take the most reasonable reading
There is nothing reasonable about that
Nothing reasonable about reading paying for a mod feels icky as I don't want to pay for a mod?
Apologies, I didn't mean to upset anyone, I was just trying to give my opinion on what is a contentious topic.
while it is worth interrogating why certain kinds of monetization feel better or worse, or more or less normal, that backlog got overly aggressive about it
as long as PK isn't doing anything besides not buying a mod, there's no urgency to push him on that particular belief about mods
It is kind of a complex topic
what i meant to imply was "Hey, you do you."
Shouldn't have said the thing the Bird Turd Lords are doing and telling OP to jump off a bridge
personally, my first guess as to why it "feels icky" would be that software, as a medium (especially games and game-related software), has a lot more predatory monetization issues these days than e.g. images
Kinda sent mixed singals about the intent there
but if the modder in question is open about why they're asking for money and transparent about the dev process and so on and so forth, I don't think that rises to an actual moral problem
I do think it'd be kind of cool fanmade expansions of old games just came out sometimes, and it'd be perfectly fine to me if I had to pay some money to play them if the quality matched the price.
It does feel kind of bad though when people take things that used to be free and just put a price on them, without adding any value to them in the first place, or make future things they make suddently cost money when similar things they made in the past were made for free.
Don't want to pay for a mod? Don't. That'sit. Didn't have to add that comment and I wasn#t trying ti imply if you don't want to buy mods you're inherently evil, apologies.
The adding price onto existing things is worth mentioning, gets especially crossive to the modding scene because often some mods have depedencies from other mods
yea, that makes sense, it's certainly a lot and i'm not particularly good at making my points
So let's say I release this thing, a bunch of people make more things based on it, and suddently I make it cost money, and fuck everybody over in the process. which is something that happened with skyrim when paid mods started to pop up in that one.
yeah, compatibility, maintenance, coordinating on APIs and shared libraries, etc are all issues that don't apply to drawing images, so a lot of the incentives are different
probably the safest way to "monetize mods" is not paywall them but simply have a patreon, and state that how much the patreon makes has an effect on how much maintenance you'll be able to do (e.g. whether and how quickly mods X, Y, and Z will get updated when the base game has an update)
On paper I am definitely not against paid mods, I would like if it was normalised for expansions, total conversions or big beefy content packs
That'd be pretty fair I think
I am unsure about that level, mostly because of the concern about repercussions from the IP owners
(with exceptions for clearly safe cases like Touhou fangames where the creator said in writing you can fully monetize whatever)
I mean I am assuming stuff like Bethesda where the publisher is selling the content pack themselves
So it's not like you are gonna get the rug pulled from under you
oh, to me "mod" implied it was not the base game's devs creating the content
Yeah, it's what I mean
Bethesda is trying to popularise paid mods that they sell through their launcher
WHich right now re pretty trash and not worth the price, but could maybe be interesting if they go in the right direction
I thought they were trying to sell mods made by the community rather than themselves
normally when the game devs also dev an expansion, we just call it an "expansion", not a "mod"
Yes, they sell them through their store, but are made by 3rd parties
oh wait you're talking about the game owners also managing the mod store, not making th emods
this makes way more sense now
yeah you certainly can't get a centralized mod store for a game without that
Well actually some are made by bethesda too, apparently, and were very bade, the Starfield ones
And the patch notes for it: https://www.nomanssky.com/voyagers-update/
Apparently the reward for a short story they released on it, was a sniper rifle that was bugged and couldn't ever be reloaded
And I think it was bugged for like, 6 months
for now I feel like Bethesda is a special case there, since they have some of the biggest games of all time still being kept alive by some of the biggest modding communities of all time
To speak of another modding game, I’m thinking of ideas for a very large late game base/city in Starbound while waiting on my flights home
@gaunt marten sorry for getting mad earlier

that is a very child friendly gif from a kids show!!
And you are also using it

How would they know you're 29 if you don't show them
tbf i think Steam has slowly tried to become a Windows competitor, with SteamOS and more lately the Steam Deck showing that it's trying to be more than "just" a storefront for software.
Discord has banned for this joke. Don't make it
Blender and Godot are also on Steam
it's quite common for apps to be distributed there, it's convenient and you get some visibility
and no codesigning woes, since Steam handles things for you. In fact, it's way cheaper to go through Steam than pay for an EV codesigning certificate (unless you make a lot of money on sales, in which case the 30% cut would eventually exceed what you'd pay for an EV certificate + its renewal)
Substance is also on Steam (or was?), it was a popular way to get it before the Adobe buyout at least

FOXDIE, for non MGS-fans (like me):
FOXDIE (originally rendered as FoxDie) was an engineered retrovirus developed by the DIA for the Pentagon. It was programmed to kill specific people by recognizing a person's DNA, causing cardiac arrest.
Definitely should have been more mature about it on both ends
This Overcharged shit is even pettier tho
Like, it's one thing for you to disagree with how a mod should change the game... It's another to target people who criticise your work.
how is Goat Sim 3 ? im interested because i really like the first one/it's expansions but am hesitant for some reason
i love it despite it not being the type of game i would usually like
both the base game and the expansion
If you wait a few years for Silksong you can probably double your game budget
did you know that waiting for around 100 years it will infinitely increase your budget? thats because you cant play it while you're dead
this game seems to have a suspcious amount of going into creatures mouths
but i want to play it when it comes out
the main game has a big section of going into the mouth of a whale, and this time im inside a capybara
like Bowser's Inside Story ?
i have no clue havent looked at that one

It has to be so flattering to Team Cherry how games are trying to avoid Silksong's release window lol
It's what happens when a big release that everyone is looking forward to is finally coming down the pike. Best and easier to get out of the way so you're not crushed by being ignored.
See: GTA 6
I mean especially in that case, moved it by 6 days to avoid the exact same day release is extremely fair
I recall two soulslike were within the same close timeframe as elden ring DLC and they moved around for it too
And other metroidvania are moving it more because well, all fans of the genre will be doing one thing for probably up to a month
Or one did, the other just announced its existence on the same day as the ER dlc
Horizon should take notes

I didn't want to reuse Caulken Bole

tl;dr Steam is just requiring you verify the credit card on your account, and that's enough for age verification.
Hm, I have paypal connected rather than a credit card, let's hope they don't ever get on my ass about it
Not in the UK though so not a problem for now
debit cards apparently still work right now
but it was resolved, as per the update in https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2025/08/steam-uk-users-will-now-need-a-credit-card-to-access-mature-content-due-to-the-online-safety-act/
Update 29/08/25 - 16:59 UTC: since there's reports of it still working even with a Debit Card and not just a Credit Card (they're different in the UK), I've asked Valve if they have any comments on this. Since in the UK, even a preteen can get a Debit Card.
Update #2 - 19:33 UTC - Valve press replied to GamingOnLinux to confirm allowing Debit Cards for verification was a bug, which has now been solved.
hopefully this isn't going to apply to France in the future, as most people actually have debit cards here rather than credit cards (myself included)
I wish they used account age like Nexus Mods or Newgrounds as an alternative (i.e. if your account is old enough, you are assumed to be 18+)
technically, it's not a flawless system as you could take over someone else's old account, but it's unlikely enough and seems to have pleased regulators so far
My Steam account is 18+
👴
As in, the actual account is more than 18 years old.
TIL the guy behind Stop Killing Games is the same guy who made the Freeman's Mind series

and Game Dungeon too, that's how I learned about it
My buddy just got the Slay the Spire board game (cc @gaunt marten )

It should have achievements
Die to the wheel of fortune minigame
And ascensions and then daily runs, lol. They really went all out
That is amazing
Yeah I was pretty impressed
When is sts2 coming again?
Chasing that Silksong high?
Lol
It just reminded me that it was announced
But you aren't wrong that the two are in similar situations, well not for the lenght of the wait but critic darling smash hit indie game that caused a massive resurgence in a genre getting their highly anticipated sequel kind of way.
Oh really? I wasn't keeping count, unrelated to that, how much do you think it'd cost to pay someone to put me in a medically induced coma for 5 days or so?
Damn
I'm still preparing a "Fell For It Again" award, juuuuuust in case this is all an elaborate Silkpost.
