random free Control update https://controlgame.com/control-march-2025-update-notes-pc/
adds some previously preorder only outfits, and the Hideo Kojima mission that was a PS4 exclusive
Oh shit
I was just going to ask you
That's going to be so awesome, I hope they can do something amazing like first three ones. Im still curious to see how the new second one is stacking up against the original one
SH2 remake? shockingly, it’s on par with the original; there’s even a few things I like better in the remake (and ofc vice versa)

Has no MTX tho so cool I guess.
Yeah I haven't played it yet actually. Need to do that sometime
My friends who've played it said it was good
good to know, I'll note this for when I'll activate the Apple Arcade trial
For F it's listed as NeoBards Entertainment
For Townfall it's Annapurna Interactive
Annapurna why do i know that name
Annapurna Interactive published What Remains of Edith Finch, Flower, Gorogoa, Gone Home, Outer Wilds, Journey, Kentucky Route Zero, The Pathless, Stray, Cocoon, and that's just the ones I'm personally aware of / care about
as far as I know, the only game publisher to earn a reputation for "if it's got that name on it, it's probably one of those really interesting indie games"
like when a movie comes out with A24 behind it
ooh
Yeah more specifically the team that's developing Townfall is No Code, who have made games like Stories Untold and Observation
with some help from Annapurna Interactive apparently
What Silent Hill f has going for it is mostly the writer Ryukishi07 which surprised a lot of people when that detail came out to light
These two definitely are the games I've been more excited about and wished to see so I think these two will be great games and worth getting hyped about, at least I hope
remember when Devolver was that?
personally, no, but I think most of what they published were in genres I'm not into

i cannot for the life of me figure out this puzzle
it starts at the filled in square and ends at the empty one, has to go through all the white dots, can't go through x's
Can you go through the same square twice?
Not doubling back, but circling twice
Do this https://i.imgur.com/Rj2sLHK.png
It's tricky!
It took me a while to realize that the only way to do this puzzle is by not crossing either of the center lines
the next puzzle was way easier because of course
i bought this game to shoot things not do puzzles
What game is it?
Oh!
Would you like some ice for your back?
i dont understand this
You're carrying your whole team so your back must hurt
oh , carry? nah
theres like 5 people in both teams and 50% are boths
bots
id be deadweight in like ..br8 or something

I don't expect it to go any lower
I'm thinking about getting it at that price
If you were looking to buy, that's a perfectly good time
That way if I don't like it it's not a lot of money
Remember that you have a two week window to play the game (for up to 120 minutes) and see if you like it
Any refund requests before these two limits are granted
Lolol, look at this blatant AI shit on the featured page:
Gross
Too early to announce that IMO. This game hasn't even been out a year, but if take their time and do it right, it might be alright.
It's sad that people are trying to push garbage like that as an actual game
Well like, it is an actual game from what I can tell. Cheap shovelware trash made for streamers, from the looks of it, but it's a game. It's the "artwork" chosen to represent it that's the issue.
That's an immediate way to torpedo your game
It's okay, 90% of all videogames are terrible
Let's talk about good videogames
The spring sale started, so here are a few interesting items from my wishlist that I'm considering:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1330930/Star_Seeker_in_the_Secret_of_the_Sorcerous_Standoff?
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1512480/Gunlocked?
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1135260/The_Falconeer?
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1390350/Webbed?
I’ve played Webbed. Very short and easy, but the web swinging was pretty fun. Good sale game.
1- Fun-looking comedy point and click puzzle with a great tone.
2- Interesting take on the classical shmup formula.
3- It's a game where you fly a falcon. Technically interesting because it has no textures at all. (Like Crash Bandicoot)
4- Cute game about a spider with web mechanics.
…technically Webbed might be the last game I played with a female protagonist?
kirby and the forgotten land
Kirby is cute, environments are good in it
Can't buy that because it's too expensive
some fun bits from kcd II patch today
Fixed players sometimes randomly dying after dismounting a cart.
Fixed authorities sometimes confronting player in their underwear when raised from their bed at night.
Fixed the issue where a civilian would not stop banishing the player's horse.
Fixed NPCs in Miskowitz sometimes falling under terrain while feeding chickens.
Improved physics of the parsnip.
kinda sad i havent seen any of the bugs
on a positive side they didnt nerf the three die so i can still win every single dice game lets gooo
what did the parsnip do
Fixed authorities sometimes confronting player in their underwear when raised from their bed at night.
Why is this a bug? This is very accurate to real life. Hell, military members if woken up at night will literally just strap on boots, their vest, and their helmet before going into battle, even if they're just in their underwear.
That should've just been left alone.
Because they were only in their underwear
And?
If you were suddenly thrust into a dangerous position after being roused from your bed, you're not gonna waste time putting a lot of clothes on, you're gonna first confront the danger.
what didn't the parsnip do
I think there might be some confusion about who is or is not in underwear or any non-underwear garments
Me waking up in my tuxedo to the door bursting open and six members of the constables running in wearing underwear
I've probably had that dream before, or some variant of it
So I guess Bright Wings waking up and only grabbing her sword when one of Sunset's students is in danger is accurate then!
I actually knew a guy in the military who only wore suits and tuxedos as his "casual wear" when not on duty. He was also extremely creepy, always had a very sinister-looking smile, and was obsessed with me for some reason to a rather unhealthy degree (he would follow me, watch me from behind corners, etc.). He also seemed rather emotionless and dead-eyed.
Luckily he left the military shortly after finishing basic training (which doubled as a wtf moment because why would anyone leave immediately after graduating?), so I never saw him again.
I feel like I've seen that guy in a horror movie, or maybe a JoJo episode
Curious.
.....G-Man ,????
If the G-Man was blond, looked a bit like a lizard, was paler than a ghost, and was like 20 years old, sure.

Silent Hill f trailer (it looks... pretty interesting!)
and wishlist available now
(I saw what could potentially be a fixed camera sequence in the trailer....
)
In 1960s Japan, Shimizu Hinako's secluded town of Ebisugaoka is consumed by a sudden fog, transforming her home into a haunting nightmare.
To be announced
So far they've just been standing around in different green screen enviroments from the game and just... talking
but they haven't really said much of anything
it's just very generic ''we hope you look forward to the game and we worked very hard on it and it was very exciting to work on a brand new vision etc etc'' talk
Well that was boring
Not the game itself, it looks actually interesting, the transmission itself was just a whole bunch of nothing and no new or valuable information
So all we really get is a new trailer and the wishlist and that's kind of it really, not even a release date after two years...
thanks for watching that so I didn't have to
I mean I guess there's probably something in there some people may find interesting but it really was just 4 dudes patting themselves on the back all the time about how great the game is going to be without actually giving any meaningful new information other than weirdly stating multiple times about how the game is set in japan now and that the games were getting ''too westernized'' and they wanted to add the japanese influence back, and going on about how ''oh this was challenging because the game is set in japan now we thought that would be a cool idea so it was challenging because it's a new vision for the franchise and we're so excited for you guys to see it!''
It's really bizarre and it's a shame because the game itself looks really really interesting from what little we still know about it
Find the beauty in terror in this new Japanese psychological horror.
When Shimizu Hinako's secluded town of Ebisugaoka is consumed by a sudden fog, her once-familiar home becomes a haunting nightmare.
As the town falls silent and the fog thickens, Hinako must navigate the twisted paths of Ebisugaoka, solving complex puzzles and confronting gr...
and this is the little snippet that really seemed to me like it's showing actual gameplay with some fixed camera
may be a cinematic, but it really looks like gameplay to me
yeah, I just watched the trailer on Steam, there's enough parts that look in-engine or gameplay-adjacent to convince me that they've got an actual game under all this and not just pretty cutscenes
Oh yeah I didn't mean to say this was all pre rendered cutscenes or anything, I'm sure it's all in-engine I don't really have much reason to think it isn't
It's just those two snippets really seemed like gameplay to me and specifically gameplay that showed the game might have fixed cameras which is exciting if that's the case
I hope some of those tight little alleyways between buildings have a fixed overhead angle, like in the Silent Hill 1 intro sequence
It’s White Day
The 2001 release is one of my personal top horror experiences of all time even though I never finished.
Might try redoing it and finishing this time. Has anybody else played it?
Balatro is worth it
eh, I think at this point I know / seen too much to really enjoy it

I only just finished pw 1
The game is fine, when it's smaller scare it's satisfying, but larger scale or complex cleans just suck tbh
my gamepass is over and I didn't have time to finish Indy
I got BeamNG.drive
nice!! I got it a few months ago, the singleplayer missions are pretty cool
the VR support isn't in a great state though (very stuttery even at lowest settings on a high-end PC), so I play it in theater mode
it sucks how this game and ETS2 both have subpar VR support 😦
Project Cars 2 has better VR support than both, despite being a 8 year old game that has received no updates in a long timespan (it's been delisted for years)

Okay I actually went back to watch the whole intermission again because I realized I was having a bit of a knee jerk reaction to this because some of the questions really were redundant and the answers were kind of non answers but there are some interesting things they talk about (mostly coming from ryukishi and yamaoka) so I'll try to summarize some of them for anyone interested in bts details of the new Silent Hill
-Ryukishi was picked after the decision to set this game in Japan was made due to his experience with Japanese horror and popularity with works like ''Higurashi When They Cry''
-Ryukishi turns out to be a big fan of Silent Hill and was ecstatic when he was told they wanted him to do the script for the new one, he was surprised when he heard about the decision the game was set in Japan, since traditionally Silent Hill has always been set in Silent Hill. Which led him to start wondering what really is Silent Hill and what story does it try to tell? On the one hand Silent Hill is a physical place with a dark history that has seen a lot of history and memories and pain. On the other hand Silent Hill is about portraying characters struggles with the evil within themselves, sin, discontent and conflict, it's a gateway into the psychological battles with the human mind, and that's the thing they ran with for this game.
-When asked if there was anything else he focused on Ryukishi jokingly answers that after playing every single Silent Hill game he's noticed women go through a lot of suffering and hardship throughout the games, and that if they were to have a female character he wants her to make her own choices throughout her struggles (for better and for worse) and simply be pulled along by the story.
-Game is set in Ebisugaoka, 1960s Japan. A fictional town based on the real town of Kanayama, Gero in the Gifu prefecture. Pretty much the entire town has been recreated as the scenario for this game per Ryukishi's request.
when asked about why he chose Kanayama Ryukishi says it was the result of comparing a lot of different places and he wanted a place everyone could agree would fit the story. When he went to Kanayama he says the labyrinthean alleyways and the structure of how the houses and buildings shifted with the passage of time alongside the residents' lifestyles fascinated him and inspired him, and that he ultimately chose it because it's a place where you can feel the history.
-Akira Yamaoka is asked about what his role in this game was, he says this time around he was put in charge of the music for the Fog World. Up until now Silent Hill had never been set in Japan before, so he's really had to tap into his Japanese identity and culture a lot more for this work than any other work he's done, but he's convinced it will still carry a distinct Silent Hill sound. It's also mentioned Ryukishi asked both composers for their inputs for important story moments he wanted to heighten, and Yamaoka later adds on to that saying that since videogames are an interactive medium, he has to pay attention to where and how the sound will be used, and that you can't just create beautiful or horrifying music in a vaccuum because it's just not as effective, it may be a good piece of music, but you have to think about the visual component as well and how it all comes together in a videogame experience.
-Finally Ryukishi says that they've been really conscious about the fact that not only is this a new experience and vision but also a new Silent Hill entry, and that there's a lot to balance there with preserving the identity of the old while implementing new ideas and visions, that departing from the town of Silent Hill was a big challenge they were facing in development, he says he's interested in seeing how long time fans will react.
He's also asked about any elements he feels would make the game not feel Silent Hill enough if he didn't include them.
he says that since he's the writer it's hard to answer as he doesn't want to spoil anything, but that one of the elements he finds more appealing about Silent Hill is a protagonist being dropped into a situation they don't fully comprehend at the start, with other characters confuse the players with cryptic dialogue that they won't understand until much later on, and he finds the moment of realization at the end to be a core component of Silent Hill, he says he tried his best to incorporate this component into this game and hopes players to pay attention especially to any moments where they don't fully understand something and they may suspect something more is going on.
The rest really is a bit redundant, although there were a couple interesting things the producer Motoi Okamoto says too (who's mostly just standing there the whole time) and it's that apparently the game is going to be an ''independent story'' so that both new and returning players can enjoy it, he answered that when asked about the game being set in 1960s Japan and how it fits into the rest of the games, so I don't know if he means the game is a spin off or if it's literally a completely different universe and not tied to any other game.
He also answers early on that a core component of the game's themes is beauty within horror, that in Japanese horror a noticeable feature is finding terror within beauty, that when something becomes too perfect and beautiful it can be unsettling, so that contrast is what they wanna go for with this game
But yeah that's pretty much all of it, if anyone was interested in knowing some more specifically behind the scenes details about Silent Hill f
all sounds good to me
I definitely think this has potential to be the best Silent Hill related thing to come out since.... like, The Room, and some people may even disagree with that and say SH3 instead
I never tried 4 myself
not that it matters where we draw the line on "classic" SH, the important thing is this might be the first (new/non-remake) Silent Hill game worth playing in a very long time
Thank you vampire survivors for moving away from wikia
I still won't buy the DLC though
but among us
I don't play among us either
@minor plover wow, you're a playable character in Rollcage
wow that looks just like me before the beard
OOOOH Rollcage Stage!
The second game was one of my childhood favorites! I still pull out the soundtrack every now and then

GDQ has Chrome's dino runner game as a waiting screen
Whenever someone donates, an obstacle shows up and the dinosaur jumps
They just finished a Balatro run

Very large blind
all gold medals and all challenges done
woo
(I actually realized after finishing that last competition I was actually still missing one very annoying challenge in a previous map that I had to go back and get, that one and Downhill Jam's secret tape almost made me rage quit completely
)
I had never gotten to play the Pro Skater series as a kid, I grew up with Underground and American Wasteland, so I've been enjoying my time going ''back'' to these games and seeing where it all began, only disappointing thing so far has been character customization is pretty lacking in options, but other than that it's been great, I'm glad they managed to keep so much of the original ost, games like Tony Hawk and Need for Speed were always the types of games to expand my music tastes so it would've been disappointing if they had problems with the music, only like 2-3 tracks of the original didn't make it I think, they mixed in some new music in there too which fits surprisingly well with the old stuff
you got the chinese version? :o
These imps in psx-iii...
anyways im going to beat that level with peakfruit (starfruit)
that's the first one, I have both installed (using Rollcage Redux/Extreme)
Redux clearly does more things to improve the first game than Extreme does on Stage 2. I guess it needed more attention to be put to modern standards, but I miss the lack of proper widescreen support in Stage 2 😦
anyway, I think both games aged pretty well. Scramble mode in Stage 2 is fun, you can find many shortcuts
I've installed Bandits: Phoenix Rising, Ballistics and Urban Chaos, I'll try to play them soon-ish... I remember watching my brother play Urban Chaos when I was like 6 or 7
GRIP is pretty nice, I finished it but the vibe is clearly not at the level of the original Rollcages (despite it sharing some developers)
it's clearly a victim of the "crowdfunded game for nostalgia's sake" era that was common in 2014-2017
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcee9dtGj2k
it's a shame this was delayed, following Valve contacting the mod's team less than 1 day before release
Generations Trailer for the CS:GO mod Classic Offensive.
The mod is available to download here: "coming soon" (delayed due to further review, Valve contacted the main developer on 12.03.2025)
This trailer is a homage to the intro of 2004 Playstation 2 classic Smackdown vs Raw.
#csgo #cs2 #counterstrike
dammit this stuff's too addictive
Valve's usually not too harsh on community created content or mods and stuff like that, why'd they stop this one?
Are they not? They did the same thing for Tf2 classic too
ooo shapes
lol, that was the last challenge I had did too because I didn't know what I was supposed to do
To be clear, it was Team Fortress: Source 2 that was DMCA'd in January of 2024.
Tf2 classic has not received one, but there was a period in 2021 where both TF2 classic and Open Fortress were reached out to by Valve with a request to stop downloads and updates as part of working something out with the company- but apparently both ended up getting ghosted by Valve after the initial takedown.
After about a year of waiting, both had enough, went back up, and remain up- I think without trouble since.
tried out Balatro for the first time and after many unlucky streaks, I managed to get a somewhat decent score that im proud of
gratz
Valve made HL2 and TF2 mod SDKs, but they never did for CS:GO
even DOTA 2 has a custom game system in comparison
Aah, yeah that makes sense, I don't follow CS nearly as close as TF2 so I didn't know if it also had any full conversion mods like TF Classic or not
CS:GO was also removed from Steam, it's available as a branch for CS2 but you can't have both installed at the same time like you can with older Valve games (e.g. Half-Life: Source didn't replace Half-Life)
working on something...
there it is: https://github.com/xemu-project/xemu/pull/2026
well, look what just dropped: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PspuiHlF5dM
CS:Legacy is a fully standalone remake of Counter-Strike 1.6, built from the ground up with 100% custom game code and game assets. After the exciting Global Offensive transition to CS2, we wanted to bring Classic Counter-Strike back to life more than ever to keep the Classic CS Legacy alive. Not as a mod, but as a full game. The game is built on...
it's an unrelated project, set to release sometime in 2025 on Steam
some comment says:
People to dislike this because "why is this allowed but not CO?" need to realize one crucial thing: this is using the official 2013 source sdk which is something Valve allows to be used to make mods and standalone games. CSGO never had that same intention. I hope both teams can combine their work on this because it already looks amazing.
CS:Legacy aims to be a straight remake of 1.6, while Classic Offensive aims to be a "greatest hits" amalgamation of all CS entries (with a focus on 1.6, but with some CS:GO sprinkled in)
Classic Offensive adds more new content, like casual modes, Danger Zone, etc
while CS:Legacy will focus on classic competitive play
ah interesting. I guess CS2 doesn't really cover those aspects
I think you have a choice for legacy or normal when you launch it if you have the beta branch jnstalled
Played it for a hwile for surf and thats how it was for me
The game may be old, but dam. The dark is actually realistically dark. Amazing sound design too.
(This video is just a demonstration of the lighting, no spooks promise)
On the whole, it all holds up really well for 2001.
The worst smash bros matchup of all time being Brawl Ness vs Marth is amazing
Due to brawl shenanigans Marth has an infinite on Ness that consists of just grabbing Ness, pummeling, then doing nothing
This means that Marth will just let go of Ness without throwing him
Unfortunately this means that Ness ends up being released right in front of Marth. At a 31 frame disadvantage.
At which point Marth can easily just… hit the grab button without doing anything
This was so bad it got banned in multiple regions
And where it wasn’t banned players opted to not use it because it was that lame
For context this means that Ness dies if he gets grabbed once
It’s so simple that you can do it while looking away from the screen
Other stupid brawl tech include the “Flight of Ganon”, where Ganon seemingly spontaneously just launches himself into the air for no reason
New Balto high score
Grats
I bought balatro yesterday
I thought it would be fairly easy, but I'm really bad at it lol
Yeah it took me a good while to get a grasp on how things work
I'm sure there's some strats I'm missing but naturally there's also a lot of luck involved too
Modding old games is so annoying. Hitting the 32 bit ram limit is too easy to do.
I watched Markiplier play it and was so surprised at how good he was doing for never having played it before
RTgame had an insane first run lol
i am having fun tho
im just bad at it

that's the best one sentence summary of Balatro I've seen
Yeah kinda same, I dropped it a bit too soon because it was getting a bit repetitive but I think I only got to like the 5th difficulty one one of the decks and like 2-3 on some other ones
I was always going for straights which is apparently not the best way for it to be done
But I remember the first time I got the game I played for like 10 hours straight with an all nighter
yay beat my first game!

I've yet to beat a game
can you spoil me and tell me how many rounds there are
alrighty, thanks
8 aunties? That's a lot of relatives!
it tells you in the bottom left corner
its 8, yeah
each ante is a small blind, big blind and boss blind, then you're on the next ante
that voucher that gives you -1 ante means that the current blinds are easier to do and you have an extra round to earn money and buy better jokers
ah ok, thx for the tip on the voucher, I will keep an eye out for that
Congrats, Meganought! The first victory in any roguelike is so rewarding
oh sure but it says so on the voucher, and i didnt think i needed to go into detail about how a -1 hand size would work
no i took it as an insult and am going to block you over it >:(
(jk)
(i did take it as critique, but wasnt offended or anything, its a fair point to raise)
nya
I bought Death Stranding
enjoy the Dark Souls of walking simulators
I've played it before, I just never finished it
Just wanted to play it before the sequel
Don't own the original copy anymore
Yes I figured
My dad sold it cuz he was done playing it, and at the time I wasn't playing it
https://i.imgur.com/OABO9eI.png Thank you developers, very cool
game two beat!
the last blind was verdant leaf, all cards debuffed till a joker is sold
i did not sell a joker and won anyway lol
just had a great joker setup
already a balatro pro

I once saw a 99999/100000 on the ante 8 boss (not my own, just a screenshot) and it was the most

congrats!

Like in a community known for toxicity the most he got called was “an odd character”
When I played TF2 I never got insulted
An efficient mixer and an efficient mixer
Both are as good but the other takes alot of space
Might redo it lol
I would be interested, but I bet the price is going to be kinda high on these haha

would probably be as expensive as a Pokemon game lmao
I'm laughing, but you're so right
Yeah, Pokemon Lego doesn't interest me, but for those of whom it might, I pray for your wallet's safe recovery.
Ah yes the tape on top of the rock thing I remember that one
Gonna give this game series a shot
have fun SamuX
You got all the games at once before trying any of them?
i presume it was part of a bundle?

Yes
The games are currently on sale so if I’m gonna be playing them might as well get them now at half the price then later at full price
What if you got just one and then waited for other sales?
Just in case you end up not liking the games
Yeah but I’d rather just do it now than wait
Suit yourself
I played "pocket AK" scout once (only buying upgrades for the secondary pocket pistol), it was pretty fun but I eventually got told to use milk and switched
the weapon isn't bad in itself, it could probably be viable for serious play if you could keep milk alongside, i.e. swap your primary for a secondary weapon
you don't have to be quite as close to the enemies when using a pistol after all, so it's a lot safer
I toyed around with Xemu's code and found a way to run some games at uncapped framerates with correct speed 🙂
these are 120 FPS videos, make sure to watch them on a 120 Hz+ display
Enter the gungeon is 1.50$ on steam rn highly recommended for anyone who hasnt tried it yet

completed the loop and installed Oorai sound mods
good performance finally
I play Mechwarrior Online, thats my team based vehicular shooter game.
Lots of fun even against better players
oooh a blueprint as my first joker
and i can afford it and another joker
nice
oh i missed that the boss blind was "play only one hand"
whoops
aw, nuts
well that run is over
What deck are ya using?
green
im just going through each deck one by one trying to get a win with each one
all the ones ive unlocked that is
nice I liked the green deck
You must be jokering me
delayed gratification is pretty great early game for money making
plus im making money on remaining discards
so its always +9 money each round minimum
wheel of fortune foiled my blueprint, nice
Wait it actually works sometimes??
foil blueprint and holographic abstract
oh you always gotta gamble
Wheel of Fortune 1 in 4 chance - 0%
Glass card 1 in 4 chance to break - 100%
We need a Wheel of Fortune system here, lol. 1 in 4 chance you get a special role which could either be foil, holographic or polychrome
I tried to add that to a silly thing I made but I couldn't get the shaders to work the way I wanted to, but I should try again. That was fun.
i do wonder if we could make a balatro themed event here...
aside from jsut doing an online poker tornament
That actually sounds really fun
I haven't played poker in years. It'd be fun to see who among us is the luckiest
Kinda tricky to organize tho
fuck, that "play only one had" blind is rough sometimes
Yeah it's a run stopper for sure
And sometimes I confuse it with the "One type" limit and really screw myself over

it wasns you when you're about to play a hand f less than five, should warn you when theres only one hand left
Do you have specific jokers that you frequently aim to use, or do you just kinda wing it
yes
i do have a strategy this run
im not sure its working that well but ive not lost yet
the trouble is that i have super nova, and two pair has been my most commonly played hand, its up to +16 rn
yeah that didnt work
oh well

||https://i.imgur.com/nBM7O6B.png|| help I can't read
||when I saw this for the first time, for a sec I thought my game's language settings were borked or something||
I did see other things like that text
Complaint: You can roll and run by pressing and holding A. You cannot run by holding A without rolling. So if you press A at the wrong time like in the middle of a roll, you will not run and must roll again
I still haven't even installed Tunic, I feel like it's because I always hear that aside from being a Zelda-like it's also a super cryptic game and I haven't been in the correct mindset to realy dedicate some serious hours into it yet
i didn't like the gameplay
you're not supposed to read it, unfortunately. The developer's stated goal is to recreate the feeling of playing a non localized game from the 90s
Yeah, I'm aware!

and i really do need to emphasize that "read the manual", i wish i had spent more time looking through it when i was stuck
Or rather, interpret the manual
Yeah, I'm well aware of the basics
I think anything else would be spoilers and disrupt the enjoyment of the game
I don't think so
One thing I noticed that wouldn't be a spoiler is that cut bushes persist even when other things respawn
I mean, a lot of things you pick up just from playing the game. There isn't much you need to know beforehand, I don't think?
Sometimes you miss things you pick up just from playing the game
That is the sort of tip I want
In the interest of not chasing down wild geese, I can say that you do not need to fully decode the language in order to reach an ending. But figuring out bits and pieces will prove useful later on.

First boss down
yeah I can't think of anything besides "read the manual" that's a good tip which is not a spoiler and also not pointlessly obvious
Oh it's strawberry juice instead of mango juice
even some of the core combat mechanics are more fun to piece together by manual pages and/or experimentation than by simply being told
Very well
actually, the stuff above about the conlang technically didn't bring up how "secret"-heavy the game is, so just in case you haven't heard this from another source:
there are secrets all over the Tunic world, often ones you can't solve or piece together right away, so in addition to the usual "explore thoroughly", also take note of anything that feels like a clue so you can come back to it later
For me personally, Tunic's the only game that did secrets in a way I enjoy, where some of them are genuinely very hard to solve but I did actually get a few on my own. I believe that's mainly because there's a steady, gradual escalation from "easy" secrets required to make progress, optional secrets anyone should be able to find by the endgame if you're looking, harder secrets that you may or may not find depending on a mix of luck and skill, up to a rare few that no sane person would get without looking up.
in most games that have crazy secrets there's just a big cliff between "normal content" and "stuff to google later" with no point in even attempting the latter
Here's one: ||https://i.imgur.com/HDqXdve.png||
I literally have no idea what I did https://i.imgur.com/zTDn5PR.png
I guess I'll find out
I have four types of consumables already.
Are there any that are hard to get more of when I spend them?
Specifically these ||https://i.imgur.com/nSN5ULd.png||
for those four, not that hard
I think all of the consumables are "not that hard" to get more of... after you know how, of course
though I'm bad at remembering to use consumables in every game
(unless you count the upgrade items as consumables, but those can only be used on upgrades, so there's still no way to screw yourself over with those)
Oh yeah I also had a fifth one which I used
That's how I know this category is for consumables
It is frustrating how many things cause you to stop running
Crossing loading screens, getting on ladders
Rolling makes an annoying sound. I want to run for as long as possible but roll as few times as I need to
weird, I mostly liked the run mechanic in this game, it's something I miss in most other games that have a dash/dodge button but just expect you to spam dash/dodge since there's no run at all
since bumping into walls doesn't stop running I can generally run all the way from one end of an area to the other with maybe one or two stops for ladders (once all the shortcuts are open and if the enemies leave me alone)
Being able to run is great
Having to roll in order to start running is not
If I had my preference, I would have running check for A being held,
And if A is held it starts running
ah well, I like rolling into the run
So from a standstill this keeps the same behavior where you roll
But if you switch screens or get off a ladder it runs without rolling
(note that "check being held" means "ignore the press until some time has passed", so generally in practice no one really wants that; what you probably want is two separate buttons)
Doesn't have to ignore the press
It can instead do two things
1- detect the button being pressed
2- detect it being depressed.
yeah, 2 is just a specific kind of "until some time has passed" since pressing and letting go of a physical button takes noticeable time
but anyway that's technical details, I wouldn't mind if the game let you bind run to a separate button, and afaik it does not, so that's fair
It doesn't have to be timed at all, as long as it tracks both states continuously the system should work
Oh boy the game has input buffering
You can swing your weapon and press roll after several frames, but it will only roll after completing the animation
If you press roll too early, it will not roll at all
I wish I had numeric HP values so I know when to heal
I wonder if there's already a mod for that
ah, well. the only thing that really stands out to me in that way (and is actually useful) is target lock
its useful outside of combat because of it shifting the camera angle
Thanks
I find it cool that The map||, despite being a paper map, has your location marker on it||
sadly, they were not able to replicate that in the physical printed version
truly a shame
at the very least, the game does let you survive hits sometimes with 1hp, to give you a last chance to do so
I'll have to get a feel for it. I typically prefer to spend healing as soon as it wouldn't be wasteful
this is likely a design decision as far as I can tell to make run more committal
it's the "why can't I buy helmet without body armor" of Tunic
my gamepass expired so I haven't continued Tunic, I've only played the first 2 hours or so
that's likely also done on purpose to make information more fuzzy (and therefore challenging)
I enjoyed it, but I felt that it wasn't as much fun as zelda
it ||tries to recreate a very specific sort of experience where you're a 10 year old kid trying to figure out how to play Zelda 1, but a lot of the reason why games tend towards being 'handholdy' these days (imo) is because a lot of the older games were opaque in what you had to do or how to do it. It just comes off rather frustrating. The fact that the story is all sim speak doesn't help either.||
I'm contemplating buying RDR2 with my remaining steam money from my gift card
worth it its amazing
I came into it knowing that the text is intentionally unreadable, so my experience has been pretty good
part of why it worked for me is that the stuff necessary for progression is way easier to figure out than in something like Z1, usually signposted but not handholding exactly; the truly opaque stuff is reserved for optional side content
Lmao the game changes your actual position during this part of the game to not reflect the apparent position

I like how they don't give me ||the shield|| until I've had plenty of time to learn how to do things without it

I have bought Red Dead Redemption 2
omg enjoy
I got a $50 steam gift card the other day and bought RDR2 and Death Stranding with it

holy shit @hasty patio so really fun kcd ii easter egg; you can came across monks in villahes yelling advice n general holy whatnots, but just now one of them gave the same speech you give during kcd i's mass after that one night with father goodwin. like i know we're both quoting hus, but this is genuinely delightful
lol
Seen this coming
Why was that a thing you could do in the first place
Maybe it just meant game physics being able to damage the sites
I...didn't even know AC Shadows was released.
I found out because they got twitch to ban a streamer they paid to promote their game
What did the streamer do?
They streamed the game at the correct agreed time of 7AM their time but Ubisoft apparently meant 7PM and even though their contract said 7AM and the streamer did like they agreed Ubisoft reported the streamer to Twitch and got them banned
Awesome, so cool that companies can do that
Never change Ubislop
Who was this btw?
This is stupid on several levels.
OliviaMonroe
The correct answer to “oh we screwed up the contract we signed with this guy and he performed what we said he should do instead of what we wanted” is not “punish him for sticking to the letter of the contract”.
Why should twitch be blamed that Ubisoft lied to them?
For blindly following what Unisoft said without actually investigating it
How would they investigate?
Maybe require to see the contract that was signed to verify ifit was not done correctly by the streamer
I guess in this case it would be more like demanding evidence before taking any action as extreme as a ban
ofc I have no firsthand knowledge of any of this, so I'm not gonna blindly assume any of us have the full story either
Contracts can very often be something you refuse to or are not allowed to share
It's unreasonable to ask for a copy of the contract
Additionally, bans by Twitch are typically low-stakes
we're talking about after they come requesting a ban, I don't see why it would be unreasonable to see the thing the ban is supposed to be based on in that situation
They ban you from streaming videos for a day to a week on minor infarctions
oh, they call it a "ban" when it's just a suspension/timeout?
Yep
do we know if that's the kind of ban that occurred in this case
In this case, the ban was revoked in about five hours
gtk
The actual effect of the ban is your audience can't give you money for the duration of the ban, nor can you entertain them
so possibly still a dick move but dramatically lower stakes than it intially sounded like
In this case, they probably lost a day's worth of income
and I guess now everyone who's paying attention knows to not accept sponsorships from this particular source
If this is a much smaller twitch streamer that didn't have as much influence the ban would most likely be indefinite
They got unbanned after 5 hours only because they had the audience to make noice about her problem
it's not the first time this happens
Holy SHIT
for context, an earlier version of this mod used her sprite from the Touhou fighting games
What other game did it happen in?

This is so dumb
I mean the game is still essentially identical so it's a big "who cares" but it's also dumb
In the past, companies would simply not let you into temples at all
It's silly but I guess it's a little better
Would they? Aren't you literally a viking in the previous game? I am not familiar but it must happen that you raze a monastery or two, in Shadow it isn't even a mechanic, it's just the physics engine
I am sure you could enter temples on Odyssey, no sure I Origin
Going back farther in 2 climbing the inside of churches was the main mechanic of finding pieces of armor, even tho IDK if 2 had any proper destructibility back then so I guess it's comparable
I guess I don't remember any relegious sites in 4, the pirate one, so for that one it might track
does the Cathedral of Havana count?
I have no memory of it
I just remember boating around in that one
And that I was really mad when I couldn't make my crew singing sea shanties in a storm
It would have been a lot more badass to hear them sing as you face down one of those huge waves in that game, huge missed opportunity
You could in Origins as well. Can't remember the god in question, but it was in an early area next to a river.
I meant pre-ubisoft
Ubisoft kinda created the open world genre as we know it, what do you mean pre-ubisoft in this context?
I guess in GTA which is the other one grandad of the genre, I think you are correct
Ubisoft only invented the radio towers
My ability to recall specific game mechanics starts to become a bit iffy that far back
Morrowind let you into temples as well (kinda got forced by the main quest too).
I think it was the destruction that might be new now (or was until it was patched for Shadows).
I mean in general, when you see a temple in any game that represents a real world religion's temple, the default is you can't enter or interact with it much
I'm going to say that you're probably right, mostly for either looks, history lesson, or something one-off. Even, I can't recall any of the major places of worship (say like St. Peters Basilica, Hagia Sophia, Dome of the Rock/Temple Mount, etc.) being used at all.
some 3D models commonly used for graphics tech demos also have a disclaimer telling you not to burn or melt them
e.g. the Buddha model, which is a staple of graphics programming
there's a Vatican level in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
the dragon or Stanford bunny are fine to burn/melt to your heart's content though
In general I don't like when game devs change things based on people whining about it.
I would be more amenable if there were side objectives about wrecking religious sites, or you were in some ways rewarded for it.
CS:GO had a Canals level where one of the sites was at St Mark's in Venice, which is very close to a church
i actually can't think of any other religious places in video games now
ive been racking my brain
like, real religious places i mean
dying light 2 has some churches/cathedrals if that counts
Ultimately you press the buttons, you had terrible people enact shootings of innocent people in both Red Dead Redemption and GTA.
I feel like the logical conclusion of this would be to GTA patch out the ability to hurt civilians.
You control the buttons you press in the video game.
well, there's a lot of games with a realistic setting that has some churches just because the real place had some churches
and a lot of games with a fictional religion featuring in the plot enough that you end up going to at least one of their sacred places
Anor Londo is based on a real cathedral does that count
I've heard some games intentionally have all the NPCs be adults to avoid the worst version of this
True there is some of that
child murder is a no go in most games yes
GTA and RDR have no children (well, RDR2 has one child but he's only ever in the camp where you can't draw weapons) and all the Bethesda games children are basically invincible
The fact that every kid looka like they are 35 in Ghost of Tsushima was similarly terrible, probably my least favourite part of the game, it shattered my immersion because the writing team clearly didn't get the memo and wrote them as if they were 8
was it like the jojo baby
Basically
yeah, most games try to stay away from things that would lead to attention from legislators, like killing children or damaging religious sites
that's how you end up with some kind of "special commission" cracking down on video games
I get why they do it, but it's also usually not a good thing for the game
theres a few children in dying light 1 and 2 as well but only in safe zones or as quest givers which have protectiton from harm
Some games do it better than others to be fair
yeah lemme dropkick them and watch them fly across the map smh my head
Yeah it is. But I’m guessing if it wasn’t patched out Japan would ban it until they removed it.
I didn't really notice the lack of kids on rdr or GTA
tbf I can't think of a case where this sort of thing hurt a game's quality
this is a. weird converstion
If anything including kids in Skyrim lowered the game's quality
there seem to be plenty of games that are willing to put violence in a church when they really want to
I'd rather there aren't
Fallout and Skyrim are real weird with it, since kids are in mortal situations all the time by emergent gameplay and always survive, it's like a huge blow to the immersion especially in the cases where you aren't the one trying to kill them
when they do put violence in a church, it's almost never an identifiable real church.
I don't care about the interaction between kids and violence
in DUSK there's like a satanic church that's a level
mostly I don't either, but I just remembered Bioshock and I don't recall that one getting any flak for it
It's mostly that the voice actors are terrible, the lines are obnoxious, and they introduce nothing
Deus Ex: Hold my Louis Pan.
They were demon slug babies so it was fine probably
(Cyberpunk doesn't want to do that, kids will disappear the second you enter into a car)
they will also disappear when you enter photo mode
you will never unsee this now that I've said it. 😛
I noticed the lack of them
There is the whole side quest where you track down your friend kid to someone that lured them in their property for less than wholesome interaction and again, like in Ghost of Tsushima the kid looks like he is in his 30s
Genryu I’m going to play warframe 1999 soon
One of the best quests in the game too, that detail feels off about it for sure but like, fair for that one
Did you manage to complete it yet?
1999? Yes a bunch of time ago.
Even tho they added stuff just yesterday
I seen that. It’s good they removed the mastery challenge tries limit
I mean I don’t mind waiting a day to try again but yeah if it helps newer people then all the better
This seems important:
||https://i.imgur.com/Hahl2n5.png||
It was indeed a major item in Tunic
This game just isnt fucking fair, lost while playing near perfectly
was always there for my team, barely ever died myself, ability usage was good, positioning was on point, good healing, good damage but just cant fucking win anyways
oof
oh, OW2 is back to 6v6 permanently now?
also, I'm surprised how everyone has a positive K/D
how is that even possible in a PvP game?
idk overwatch counts kills weirdly
Imperator: Rome had real (historical) holy sites in the game and a mechanic where you could sack and destroy them for mechanical benefits (or penalties). The majority of the religions in the game basically don't exist any more, so this is "fine" (no one is going to get annoyed at you for ruining Zeus' temple at Olympia...), but you can also burn holy sites for religions that actually do exist today, like Judaism, Zoroastrianism, or especially Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism.
There's even an achievement which is essentially about wiping out Hinduism (you need to convert about 80% of the population of India to Buddhism).
lol I find it funny how quickly I noped out of that situation, I don't think I had time to even see all the enemies down there
I've been having some unexpected fun with this game, I kinda came across it because I was randomly looking at ARPG stuff specifically Fate and I found out the guys who made Fate went on to make this and from what I came across people kept saying very good stuff about this game, although it's a bit on the simpler side of ARPGs so it doesn't have anything too complex, which for 2 bucks honestly sounded like a deal to me
It's very charming too, it has a very Warcraft 3/early League of Legends aesthetic and vibe that really appeals to me, especially that UI, and it's pretty addicting too, just a real nice, simple dungeon crawler
maybe some more hardcore ARPG fans here will recognize it and maybe know more about it, I just kinda came across it and am gonna go through it pretty casually, I like them but I admit I know very little about ARPGs in general
which one is this one? Torchlight?
torchlight 2 is great
Arpg's can be quite fun ^_^ though I'd avoid mobile/pay 2 loot ones
Yeah it's Torchlight 2, normally I would go in order for most games where it matters but from what I gathered it kinda didn't really matter that much here and Torchlight 2 seems to have basically improved on every single aspect from 1 from what people were saying so I just went with this one since I'm just looking for good gameplay
Seems like the more recent Torchlight games got hit by that, there's Torchlight Infinite which is free to play and seems to feel like one of those f2p mobile games
But that's from what little I saw
yeah, as good as the underlying systems in Infinite seem to be, they have loot pets that increase the loot you drop and are paid purchases off a banner?
As far as I gathered anyway
it's wild
but Torchlight 2 and 3 are pretty recommended from what I heard before I got into PoE and Last Epoch
3 is not recommended
oh? what's wrong with 3?
I recommend 1 and 2
Cookie cutter game, overly aggressive monetization
The studio was bought by people who wanted money fast
oh, that's a shame to hear.
Yeah I heard Torchlight 3 suffered a lot from similar things with Infinite so most people recommend 1 and 2, though mostly I hear 2 since it improves on stuff from 1 but you know how it usually goes, there's usually a few things people that are more deeper into the games enjoy more from one game than another
Seeing so much stuff from PoE2 also definitely made me kinda look into ARPGs a little bit more too, but I feel like that's a little too much to start with
Path of Exile is certainly on the deep end of ARPGs, though PoE 2 does a better job at introducing concepts. (It's not finished yet so I'd wait till it's out and actually free to play)
Modern Diablos are... hmm. I've not played them as I want the depth of more interesting items and a bit more build craft, but some folks like the more straightforward nature of D3/D4.
I'm eagerly awaiting the next Last Epoch big update, that'll open up a bunch of new endgame stuff, and I already liked the base game of it
LE is sort of a mid way between easily accessible and deeply customiseable.
There's trees, but they are limited to each skill, and a passive tree but limited within each class.
The abilities work 99% how they say they do, and it's easy to test and re-spec if it isn't your jam
I heard a lot of good things about Grim Dawn which I also got because it also was on sale for very cheap, but that one's for much later, it's a little bit more complex but not quite as much as some of the more complex ARPGs I came across and a lot of people seem very positive on pretty much all aspects of that game so I thought I'd get it too
for now though I'm enjoying the aesthetic and vibe and simplicity of Torchlight, just some nice fun where I can turn my brain off just a little bit, but not too much because even though I'm only a couple of hours into it it's already getting a little hard if I don't actively pay attention to what I'm doing
sounds good! have fun ^_^
Lots more free stuff on prime
Pretty sure mortal shell was free on epic not too long ago though...
And on the topic of Epic
My free xbox gamepass expires today, but at least I tried out some new games, some I wouldnt have known without scrolling thru the catalog
The games I played and finished:
Nine Sols (my fave of the ones I've played, got hooked by the story/cast, gameplay is nice too)
The Big Con (solid, I dig the artstyle especially)
Cocoon (a good puzzle game that assaults your brain)
Superluminal (another good puzzle game that assaults your brain)
Hi-Fi Rush (rly liked the mix of platforming+rhythym gaming theme, even tho I suck at getting timings right)
Hollow Knight (a great game but my god are the benches way too sparse
had to use a mod that allows TP/setting your own benches, otherwise it was pretty fun)
Shady Part of Me (a puzzle game that gives me Little Nightmares vibes, loved the message it gives)
Planet of Lana (lovely platforming puzzle game, glad I played it at the last minute)
Unpacked (pretty chill, great for my ocd
)
Balatro (bad news, I got addicted
)
games I didnt finish:
Power wash Simulator (felt too much like a chore ironically enough)
Tunic (wasn't really digging the combat system, but it seems like a really charming game either way)
Lego Star Wars (only did the prequels bc I had no time left)
(thanks again Nire for the gift card
)

delightful news from kcd II ! there is in fact a side quest with ossuary! the devs took slight (but arguably better) liberty and the ossuary in-game is already standing (the real one was built later), and you get tasked with restacking all the bones and skulls and whatnot back into pyramids. includes gems of dialogue such as "ugh, my back hurts... maybe i could borrow a new one here?" "dont yall feel a bit cramped?" "ashes to ashes, dust to dust.... and then i sweep you into a corner" and "argh, almost broke all bones in my body!"
you cant uh, legally take pictures in the real ossuary but i can attest to the accuracy of the building inside and outside (but well was anyone surprised by that part?). though the pyramids are a lot taller these days. and i guess they added the bone chandelier some centuries later
... I'm going to have to get back into Star Rail, aren't I?
That cut of saber face, my brain just keeps going "that's AJ my dude"

I didn't get hooked by Hi-Fi Rush, even though I thought it looked amazing. Rhythm games are hard for me, I am not one of those Guitar Hero or osu! pros
I finished Wreckfest, Superliminal, Jusant, Little Kitty Big City, these are all great
I also didn't finish Tunic, even though I love its artstyle
yeah for me the way battling works in Hi-FI Rush was a bit odd at first but I got more accustomed to it at least
the fact that I didn't suck at Hi-Fi Rush remains baffling

So, ∆V: Rings of Saturn had an update...
In-game, a spaceship company known for having the most advanced (and expensive) ship you can pilot changed their name to Eon Interstellar, invoking their forward thinking and leaving the legacy of a man's name behind. In-universe, this name change commemorates their launching a generational ship interstellar to colonize a distant star system. OOC, I'd say it's a welcome change.
Pretty good game too
Played that one a bunch
If you like space mining..pfft who I am kidding, everyone likes space mining
anyone else remember Lego Rock Raiders?
Yesssss, one of my favorite Lego games! Recently remastered as Manic Miners by a long-time superfan too, with extra and cut content (and far future plans for completely new content as well as completely new levels).
speaking of forgotten lego shit, lego chima anyone?
I remember it, but wasn't too big of a fan. Ninjago it ain't.
chima isnt ninjago
Same multiverse though
oh idk im not that deep in the lore of it
i used to watch the show, play flash games of it,and had some sets of it
Different worlds, but connected via portals.
I loved lego chima
The Chima gang even make a cameo in the original Ninjago seasons at one point, and I think the main villain of the new Ninjago Dragons Rising series is one of the lion guys from Chima (or similar).
isnt the main ninjago villain some snake dipshit
idk memories are vague i havent been into it for like a decade now
I'm pretty sure lego chima awakened something in me
probably played a part in my fry awakening too
Yeah, in S1, lol.
There are fifteen seasons
wouldnt know, watched it on tv which shows epiusodes not in order and not even the entire show
And the snake guy is a chump compared to the actual main villain, who appears several times throughout the show under different guises.
this for some reason reminded me to rewatch gundam age....for like the 5th time
remember playing the psp game univere accel when i was little and despite not understanding shit cuz it was in japanmese somehow managed to get through it
The first two seasons are kinda hit or miss, but they eventually start getting pretty damn dark, all things considered. Genocide, murder, PTSD, kidnapping (multiple times), regicide (surprising amount of this), slavery, psychological trauma, on-screen death, and so much more.
The world of Ninjago is presented in a Lego theme, but it's actually seen by the characters as one would see the real world. The Lego aspect isn't played straight at all, it's practically ignored in favor of storytelling.

it does ! but in the show (or in all mines that had a steep slope when elevators werent a thing) they had these huge winches to winch up empty trucks and winch down loaded trucks

I think you can also play the truck simulator games in free roam by just ignoring your goals
to be clear, I don't expect to be playing it in a serious way, I expect to just ... yeah ... "Mark do you want to drive the truck?" gets out racing wheel "ok let's drive the truck!"
what goals? I have a truck and I'm driving it around in a field, or rather, I'm gently touching the gas and letting the kid steer
yeah, I understand, I'm just saying I can totally see playing with a "yeah whatever" mindset

Oooo this is fascinating. I might take a look at this. It looks very steampunk and hearkens back to Jules Verne.
I think I played this a long time ago but I can't remember much
Big Myst and Uncharted vibes too. My adventure senses are tingling.
I got Syberia for free and never played it
yeah, I was aware of this because it was in my mom's point-and-click collection along with Syberia and the Mysts
I think I'll grab this when I get home. Won't say no to a free Myst-like game.
There's no way this is from the Dracula devs
I just saw Jerma play through those games lol
Oh woah there's a remaster
A point and click adventure game in the year of our lord 2025?
I know it's technically not a new one but still that's really cool to see
I don't know how I feel about it being real time... I guess it's less jarring for any new players nowadays but those games having the screens basically be stuck in time until you move kinda gives it a unique charm
It looked like the remaster is point and click too.
Also you can set the Riven remake to be point and click like the original, iirc.
It is point and click, I just mean the presentation of the transitions between screens and the screens themselves seem to all be in real time, which I guess is fair and is just a natural evolution of how the presentation of these games would be nowadays, but having the screens be completely static and have basically zero movement except for a few specific screens that had unique transitions kinda gave these types of games a unique charm
but I guess it's just a subjective thing
I've heard about Riven before but I've never played or heard about that game originally so I kinda don't know much about it, but it was cool to hear people even talk about a point and click adventure game as much as they did with that one when the remaster came out, it's a genre of game you don't hear that much about anymore
(also it took me a second to realize what you meant because everytime I hear Riven I think of the League of Legends champion lol)
I guess VR games are the modern equivalent of point and click adventure games now? Kind of, sort of
But not that many people even have VR systems
I enjoyed the first 3 games in the Myst/Riven series but it's not something I'd go out of my way to play several different games in the same style
it's like, oh, that was fun a couple of times
Well, I guess it sort of was the type of genre you'd ''keep tabs on'' back then just because there were so many adventure point and click games during the very late 90s and early 2000s when PC gaming was really picking up
But it didn't seem to last that long after a while
I guess Telltale kinda popularized them again with The Walking Dead but for some reason in my head I don't count The Walking Dead to be on the same genre as something like Harvester or Dark Seed or Monkey Island, I don't know why they just feel like different genres to me
yeah, The Walking Dead is definitely not a "point-and-click adventure" the way we use that genre term in reference to Myst/Riven/Exile or Obduction or Quern or The Rooms
I think the least bad genre term I've heard for Telltales like TWD is "narrative choice game" which is fair enough
Yeah Telltale stuff is more focused on narrative and making choices than a more traditional point and click which can sometimes have really bad narrative just because most of the gameplay is just item fetch quests and puzzle solving
Kinda like a Resident Evil style survival horror
genre classification is ultimately about emphasis and focus and degree, not the sort of thing we can ever make objective requirements for
e.g. Goodbye Volcano High may contain a rhythm minigame, but it's clearly a minigame; the game as a whole is absolutely a narrative choice game
it's funny you bring that up because the "puzzles" in survival horror only really work as the, uh, second layer of gameplay? they can't make them actually hard or you'd never actually get through them amidst all the surviving and the horroring
like there's a core gameplay loop of moving and shooting and healing, then the 2nd level gameplay loop (progression loop???) of navigation and combining puzzle items like keycards
I mean you say that but I've seen people get stuck in one or two puzzles for classic RE/SH sometimes... the actual puzzles, the ones that may have some riddle to solve or something
but most of the ''puzzles'' in those games involve the process of ''oh I got this key from this corner of this area that opens that one door/gets rid of that one obstacle all the way on the other side of the area that gives me the item to go to the next area''
(and it's fun every single time
)
well sure but there's "hard" and then there's "the designers effed up here"
I'm trying to remember if I ever got truly puzzle-stuck in an RE/SH outside of the infamous RE:CV softlock
(I got combat-stuck for a while in classic RE3 because the dodge mechanic in that game does not work at all lol)
Yeah but I mean those puzzles where there's actual some type of problem to solve, like the V-Jolt recipe on RE1 for example where you actually have to solve some sort of logical problem, I've seen people get stuck on those types of puzzles
Which I guess are the closest thing to the point and click style puzzles, if you wanna talk about designers messing up sometimes adventure games have some real leaps in logic with puzzles...
Dark Seed is probably the one I have more recent memories of just because I love rewatching that one retrospective video about it
not familiar with that one
Dark Seed is often remembered for it's visual design, plucked straight from the canvas of H.R. Giger. Underneath it's grim exterior is something darker, more sinister, and far more grotesque than any biomechanical dreamscape: the mind of resident lunkhead - Mike Dawson.

Yo...
It's soooo good and funny
Both the video and the game
It's such a bizarre little duology, the types of games that are so bad that warp all the way back around into being fascinating and great
Harvester too, but that one's a little harder to recommend/talk to people about just because that game in general is very strong with its material, though it's 100% what it's going for and kind of the whole point of the game but still, that's another really fascinating one
yeah, the logic leaps are infamous, but that's usually part of what makes one point-and-click "good" and another "bad"; the ones I typically recommend don't have that problem
the one Monkey Island game I tried is interesting because... it's kinda doing insane troll logic on purpose? as a parody thing? but it is still progression-blocking bullshit at the same time, so I can't sincerely recommend playing it??? I dunno what to think of that
that's when whenever you're recommending someone the game you add a big * at the end and warn them about bullshit logic and to only play if they're up for the task
like how I'd add a huge asterisk if I ever recommended a game like CV to someone, for whatever reason...
The one game I kept hearing about all the time and I keep wanting to try out but never remember to check for a sale is grim fandango
I'm sure everyone here knows about it probably, but I've never heard anything about it ever or seen it before, I somehow completely avoided that game for my whole life
I just know it's apparently one of the very best
oh right, I tried Grim Fandango once, loved the setting, finished maybe the prologue but got stuck enough times I kinda never got back to it
probably worth trying again at some point, it may have just been a skill issue on my part
I have it on my GOG wishlist just kinda waiting for whenever I happen to catch it on sale, usually you can find those games for like 4 dollars or something whenever there's a big sale going on
oh apparently I already have Grim Fandago Remastered on Steam
I guess I must've snagged it in a past sale
I remember some horror themed ones that I really liked, Scratches was really good it's kinda sad that you can't really find that game anymore
Stories Untold I also remember being really nice, the devs of that are actually developing Silent Hill Townfall
does Obra Dinn count as a point and click adventure game? I guess it'd be a bit of a stretch but if it fits then that one was one of my favourites too, it's just unfortunately really hard to see what's happening in that game, I remember going for a filter with very dim lights because otherwise it would've ruined what little good eyesight I have left
it does not lol
Obra Dinn's one of those games with no clear genre descriptor because there are so few other games trying to do similar things
like Outer Wilds
(I'm aware of the whole "metroidbrania" thing, but there's even more conflicting definitions of that word than there are games it might apply to; for now it's not a useful term)
I guess it falls into the general and vague ''puzzle game'' genre
pretty much
I like calling them actual investigative games.
Even tho not all of them are about investigations I guess
Progression via knowledge and information, as opposed to artificially
The genious of giving you something to put your guesses and to confirming them only in sets is such a spark of genious
There is a lot of investigation going on in that game
Since the entire game is basically figuring out what the hell happened in this ship and identifying people and their causes of death, there was this one part of the game that is notoriously hard because you never really get the answer for certain people's identities, you kinda have to figure it out based on context clues and process of elimination
It happens pretty late in the game, so it's not early enough that it feels unfair and it's at a point where you already identified most of the people in the ship
But I remember being stuck on that for a long time
Did you try Chants of Seenar by any chance?
Same system but about translating languages
I would have solved Obra Dinn without a walkthrough if not for the later parts where ||you're expected to just assume people of the same ethnicity all hang out together and never with anyone else???||
yes huge fan of Chants of Sennar
I've never heard of that one I think
It's probablty my favourite with that style
Yeah that's the one, you sort of have to land on their identities at random just guessing
although CoS I would just call a point-and-click puzzler, I don't think it falls into any of these limbo non-genre spaces
Honourable Mention, the Golden Idol saga, same thing, but it's several little vignettes that interconnect in a larger narrative
I've heard of Golden Idol several times, haven't felt like trying it yet
I categorise it together with the others because of the style of confirming guesses in batches but yeah, it's probably a bit more classic
That really was the element that made these games pop
it's definitely an aspect worth discussing even if it doesn't rise to the level of "genre"
like how Tunic handles "secrets", while the overall game is probably best described as a mix of isomorphic Zelda-like and Soulslike
I think maybe it should.
Like, Obra Dinn has more in common with Senaar than with Danganrompa or Phoenix Wright evem tho both are allegedly investigation.
well, Phoenix Wright is at least as much visual novel as it is puzzle game
I think people just kinda forget the VN part when trying to describe its genre?
it's weird
I was so bummed when I played Ace Attorney the first time
oh, you were expecting an Obra Dinn?
I didn't know much about it other than the characters so I was kind of expecting a nice full investigation experience but it really is just a visual novel mostly there's very little actual investigative gameplay at all, it was so on-rails that I got to a certain point during the Samurai investigation where I put it down for a long time because I was so disappointed
also as long as we're all constructing "wtf is this genre" alignment charts, be sure to put Tangle Tower in there somewhere
And I like the story and the characters I just found the gameplay to be so mind numbingly boring
I just don't like when the handholding is so aggressive, same problem I have with Danganrompa.
I can like, play them, they are fun even, but I don't feel I actually need to actually use my brain in those games except to guess ahead in the story I guess
At their worst, they're even frustrating to play
Especially when you have to go to this specific screen and examine the specific part of the screen to get the specific dialogue to progress
I think it depends the kind of mindset you go in with, but yeah, if you have the wrong expectations set it's gonna be rough
and ultimately the whole importance of well-defined genre terms is giving people accurate expectations of the games they might spend time playing
Obra Dinn was the success it was for me because it was so long that I was waiting for a game that put investigation as the main thing you do, and it lets you do it without rubbing your face in the evidence
actually... seriously this time: have you played Tangle Tower
Mmmm never heard of it
that's what this channel is for
I thought of it because it does point-and-click-y murder investigation, has some puzzle minigames, does expect you to put the clues together yourself, also has the VN elements of cutscenes and dialogue under sprites and such, but it's drastically more non-linear than any Ace Attorney game, so it might be what you're looking for
Of note, Papers Please and Obra Dinn are by the same guy. Very different games, but it makes me wonder what their third game will be
I actually almost brought up Papers Please earlier as another "what even is this genre" game
I guess I could check it out at some point, it has surprisingly nice presentation I didn't expect it to have full voice acting
Wikipedia calls it a ''puzzle simulation'' game which I guess it's true...
I guess they have to make up something to call it
okay I finally found the obligatory webcomic response: https://www.awkwardzombie.com/comic/trying-my-patience
