Oh nice

Nothing to see here, carry on citizen
That was really sudden and unnecessary I was vibin

When I was walking near armors before they always did small cool things like salute or something not freaking THIS
i have no idea how to get this treasure chest
I have no idea what treasure chest you're talking about
this one
For a moment I went "Holy shit Cap is playing Klonoa!"
Maybe you'll get a double jump or a hook ability later
i have a double jump but it doesn't get me far enough
i looked around but there doesn't seem to be anything to paint or thin
Or maybe float ability like Spyro
What if you used coyote time to get a tiny bit extra distance?
you need to summon torrent and do a double jump
mickey doesn't have torrent
The Mouse wins again...
i like Mickey
Mickey is the Mario of Disney
Cat
He and Mickey play a game of cat and mouse
Pete (also named Peg Leg Pete, Bad Pete and Black Pete, among other names) is a cartoon character created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks of The Walt Disney Company. Pete is traditionally depicted as the villainous arch-nemesis of Mickey Mouse, and was made notorious for his repeated attempts to kidnap Minnie Mouse. Pete is the oldest continuing Di...
i like that picture
Yeah
i like how this article is written as if Pete is a real actor
Pete joins the screen actors guild
im public domain mickey
No shirt no service
mickey doesn't wear a shirt and donald doesn't wear pants
they made an episode about that
did they reallt ?
Finished Echoes of Wisdom, been talking about it over at #1067547311640678480 but just throwing it over here just in case too, easy 9/10 for me, 8/10 at the lowest, beautiful game, super good
in the modern cartoon, donald and mickey try to get fast food from goofy for a double date with minnie and daisy, but neither of them have both a shirt and shoes. The episode has donald getting the clothes in a cion toss while mickey tries to hide, butt naked, from the rest of society. The end shows Donald losing his clothes and them falling on Mickey, who takes the girls on a picnic while they mock and berate donald for his lack of clothes
that show was wild. A lot of episodes had the characters in different places or times, and in this example, Goofy didn't know who mickey and donald were, and they didn't know him
It was a bizarre cartoon, but definitely a fun one

New dragonmaid support.

watch it take 5 million years until they release it in TCG format
I mainly play master duel, but I will pickup the new boss fusion when it comes out.
Blargle
Wanna play the new Zelda but I really don't want to deal with using my dog shit switch
Is there a specific path you'd suggest for that one? I think I have one of them. .

Alas

that sounds pretty nice, finally a definitive way to play it if it's not too buggy 🙂

they better leave that cat the fuck alone
Is this Disney Epic Mickey Rebrushed?
yes !
Do you like it?
yeah it's really good
i loved the original game when i was younger so it's been a treat to play the remake
I'm going to play demo to see if I like
Oh the pain and the horror of returning to a game with savepoints after playing save-anywhere-anytime games
Crystal Project has save points that are not painful to use
i was trained on games with savepoints, so that's just how i operate in video games. i very rarely trust auto-save features unless they are somehow forced upon me
You could just save and quit instead of using a save point.
It's a manual save you can trust, and can be done anywhere
Depends on the game
But, with emulation, I will generally use save states if I need to break from a game and i'm not at a savepoint
Or for "quality of life"
Yeah when I emulate I usually do a manual save followed by a savestate
that's good practice
Then when I get back to the game I load the manual save unless it fails
I should do this. The VR bedroom that I like to use has issues with writing saves on some/(all?) emulators
You need to wait like 5-10 seconds after confirming a save
It's really painful when a game has save points and yet when you die you have to start from your last save
I think save-anywhere-anytime is not referring to auto-saves
Yeah
I generally prefer games having autosave as long as they don't replace manual saving with it
Paper Mario 64 does this and it's dumb because it doesn't let me save time by doing hyper glass cannon builds
and in principle I prefer the flexibility of save states / quick save, but there are lots of games that do checkpoints well enough that it's a non-issue in practice
I have to try to survive sometimes
(along with lots of games that do checkpoints badly and tank an otherwise good experience; half my preference is based on hard-earned distrust)
I'm weird and try to play games "as intended" most of the time
But, I do make exceptions, especially if the game's save system is bullshit or non existent
It's not weird, it's just that some games are pain
I was forged through the pain
I played FFXI so I tend to tolerate/not notice a lot of bullshit
oh absolutely same, I need a reason to go against design intentions (after all, why am I playing a game if I disagree with its entire design?), although the older the game is the more likely there are huge issues I need save states to work around
Heh, I'm randomly reminded of when I first played Metroid. I didn't use any walkthroughs, and I made my own map on scratch paper
Like in what?
this game is awesome
yes it is
(It's a Japanese game)
if I can't set it to JP voices and EN subtitles so I can judge the translation in real time what is even the point /s
forcing myself to learn hiragana and katakana so i can bungle my way through mother 2 because i was peak weeaboo at 12
Two exact same games with localization(region) differences
one is Asian release, one is NA release
my new favorite example of this was in DDLC when some untranslateable wordplay happened and Monika went "be nice, that kind of wordplay is the most frustrating for translators"
so I switched to English and found they didn't even try to localize the actual pun, instead Monika says "that joke makes no sense in translation"
Games should never do this
i love that game so much
Is DDLC Japanese first?
Holy shit I have to use the configuration to change controls of this game, damn you 2003
the original is English since it's from an American based studio, if thats what youre asking
American studios have made Japanese games in the past
The heuristic does not always hold
Apparently it was English first
On the day of the release of Plus, it was announced that the game would be localized and released in Japan by Playism later that year. Wikipedia
I can't exactly point why but DDLC has this 'Japanese-feeling game made by Western devs' vibe
fair enough, it is an Indie developed game so I figured it'll be a different case
to me it has that vibe mostly because it’s so well known in English circles, not because of how it’s written
It's hard to tell, but it's...it's slightly different
from what I'd normally expect from a Japanese game
got myself into a situation(for non employees:sentry that shoots at you when it spots you that spawned right at the entrance and was unavoidable, the elevator doesnt start going back up fast enough)
I simply could not resist using this tweet to tell this news:
https://fxtwitter.com/jasonschreier/status/1844001600828055970
A hundred dollars?!
The profits on that thing must be insane.
Like, its probably not expensive at all to manufacture. Maybe ten bucks at most.
It's probably more than 10 bucks, it seems it has sensors that detect your movements
It also has a built-in wifi function
$99.99 for an alarm clock is definitely super expensive but at least it does have more than just "ooh alarm clock with nintendo music"
I was shopping for alarm clocks recently and tbh $100 is pretty average for anything that isn’t a barebones beeper.
All the features I need from an alarm clock can be found in a phone app, so I don't shop for alarm clocks
If that's the case then the price seems quite reasonable, it's for Nintendo fans anyway
this is really cool i kind of want one
Or even any basic Walmart watch.
No, I typically want multiple alarms pre-scheduled in advance
Ah sorry, $25 dollars.
Never trust a single alarm...
when was the last nintendo direct i cant remember
maybe. It is likely that they want to do their next direct with Switch 2
i think the other big games yet to be released are M&L Brothership and Super Mario Party Jamboree
Metroid Prime 4
oh my god guys
nintendo's gone woke
insert laugh track
I keep my phone out of my bedroom while sleeping.
Hmm
I was watching this video and they took it down
Now I have video but no audio
I also end up tweaking the alarms several times a week
Exactly I was thinking this
Campaign rewards for BO6
Oh that's weird, is is usually like this? That if you finish campain you get things for multiplayer?
I think I like that
I mean its nothing new.
i think halo3 did something like that

Looks pretty neat. A bit cramped
I love this game 💖💖
Is this a mod or how did you change how your house looks?
Uh i cant tell if thats part of the 1.6 update or stardew expanded
Do you have some idea what it could be?
idk !
I wonder if it will be actual voice chat and they'll finally get rid of the app?
i hope it's miiverse :copium:
So, a little bit over halfway through SH2R, so far it's actually been really really good
Kind of a RE2R situation, but not really? It's an in-between between RE1R's faithfulness to the original game with completely new revamped areas (while still keeping the old ones...?) but mostly the same and even the same script, just very expanded upon, whereas in the original every area would be like a single floor now it's 2 or 3 with more rooms too
Visuals are great overall, mixing a lot of SH1's aesthetics with SH2, some scenes don't hit as hard and aren't as good unfortunately, but overall so far this is actually not bad at all, I had no faith in Bloober going into this but they actually delivered
that's good to hear
My friends who are playing it have also been saying it's great, and they're big fans of the original like I am
I was gonna get it even if it was dog, but now I'm actually pretty excited
I was super skeptical and I was extremely ready to hate on this because Bloober doesn't have a good track record, but they actually pulled through
Those trailers and teasers really didn't do it justice at all
me and a friend guessed it's for dedicated servers, ideally testing them before the switch 2 rolls out
that might explain why they're testing it in some of the core regions (US, Germany, Japan) rather than little testing countries (New Zealand, Canada)
Happy to hear Konami had a win for once
It seems Alarmo(the new alarm clock by Nintendo) is selling too well in Japan they have to do raffle selling now
They did it with Switch before
makes sense its pretty revolutionary

Which one is the armor one and which one is the hand one?
huuuuhhh
No way
Oh god I hope this has multiplayer
I remember that game but as a kid personally I always played the Episode 1 movie game
It was surprisingly good, from what I remember...
Did the original have multiplayer?
I think it had couch co-op for sure
You can't save that toad, which is sad.
P.S. I think the Galaxy games are the best example of Toads actually doing their jobs. Like, they're still weaklings, but you see the guards at least trying to protect Peach. You see the toad brigade actually going out to galaxies and doing stuff, even if it's not much. It's nice to think about it.
this is interesting, but is the opening intro even rendered in real time?
yeah you play it

the fact its by euphoric brothers says enough, currently invites dont work nor do private lobbies, and public ones are broken as hell so cant even play multiplayer properly
Current set of prime free games
Three are pretty good
(Which three? The answer may shock you!)
Doom eternal, spirit of the north, bioshock remastered
The answer did not shock me
There's a bioshock pun in there, but I don't feel like making it today
Doom Eternal for free??????
Are those free to keep?
Yes!
Hell yeah, that's a good deal
https://gaming.amazon.com/intro More info on that.
Yeah, I've found prime gaming deals to generally be pretty good. A free twitch sub, buncha free games that aren't only locked on their game app, it's scattered around on gog, epic, etc
https://gaming.amazon.com/home?ingress=twch&ref_=CGTS not sure if it'll show for everyone but there's a bunch more available too. Kerbal space program, borderlands 2, loop hero was there too
been playing Madness: Project Nexus a bunch lately
Heroic supports launching Amazon games now
(on top of Epic and GOG)
it's a must have for Prime Gaming owners now 🙂
@fresh bane it has couch co-op https://x.com/daily_swgames/status/1844439185408786478?

Former Disco Elysium developers establish Longdue to develop 'psychogeographic RPG' spiritual successor https://www.gematsu.com/2024/10/former-disco-elysium-developers-establish-longdue-to-develop-psychogeographic-rpg-spiritual-successor
Time to keep an eye on this studios for the next like, 5 years
the disco elysium story is wild man
as in, the studio and IP ownership story
Calling yourself Longdue is setting yourself up for meme headlines if the game takes forever to come out now…
Very true, but at least it does stay in your head as a name
Jacob Geller posts a new video
"Somehow, Spec Ops: The Line still has more to discuss."

it was a good video
Ive been lied to, cheated, disgraced
I remember when Extra Credits was in it's prime. They put out a video that was, like, 40 seconds long and all it says was to go play Spec Ops:The Line right now. Go play it, we'll talk about it later, but you need to go play it now. Go.
(A short video back then was weird)
Then they came out with, like, a fantastic super long video talking all about it
i dont think you can buy it on any digital storefronts anymore which sucks
License to pirate
pretty much
Spec Ops: The Line doesn't sound highly replayable
I replayed it not that long ago
Did it surprise you again?
Oh it isn't really, I remember the ending well enough and the 🔥 scene, but it's been 11 years :X
of course, when gamers talk about "replay value", they're usually talking about how satisfying the core gameplay is and how much of that fun is retained even after you know everything already, and SO:TL is very much not about any of that
the reasons you would replay SO:TL are the same reasons you would rewatch Apocalypse Now
and you'd probably do it very infrequently if at all
The only movie I think of rewatching is Groundhog Day (not a joke)
I generally rewatch something if I feel like there's a lot of nuance I missed the first time
exactly
for example, one thing I intentionally did on my SO:TL replay was ||look for more places where I had a "stealth choice", or try to do something different in places I knew had one||
That's a fair way to go about it
on top of the usual stuff like noticing more foreshadowing after you know the ending it's building toward
for me I like to rewatch/replay stuff I really enjoyed to see if there was something I missed or can better understand (esp after reading discussions after the fact)
ofc there's also games with multiple choice/endings sorta deal
The only games I've ever replayed pretty regularly are survival horror games because they can usually be completed in under 2-3 hours if you know what you're doing and I can focus completely on the gameplay
Something about the gameplay loop of uninterrupted puzzle solving and fetch questing really engages me
I do like that loop but it's gotta be new or at least randomized puzzles for me
Otherwise I rarely replay anything, I don't know why but I just don't no matter how much I like the game, the other game I did replay a bunch is DMC5 for pretty much the same reasons, just pick a higher difficulty and enjoy uninterrupted demon comboing, I can even listen to a podcast or something while doing it so I can just do it forever
DMC5 is really super cool I think even though story is complicated it's all about fun and the fun is strong
When I see people say they're "starting a new character" in a game like Cyberpunk I just... Can't process that
I love that game a lot but once I actually finish the last pending quest I'll probably uninstall it because I'll just never play it again
replaying a game you know vs trying new games you don't know is always going to be a mostly personal call, and also depends a lot on the genre and player skill and other stuff
You can complete most games in under 2-3 hours if you know what you're doing and can focus completely on the gameplay
It's not really the same though
It's the same to me
I highly value finding new favorites even if it takes a lot of tries to hit one, but even in my favorite games I rarely enjoy laser-focused practice or anything score-based and even back when I tried I often hit a hard skill ceiling anyway
and most of my favorite genres tend to have relatively low replay value in the conventional sense, especially as I could never find a multiplayer game I enjoyed
so when I do replay a game, it's usually one I remember fondly from several years ago but forgot all the details of, so it's kinda sorta like playing for the first time
(ignoring all the randomizer mod stuff)
I do tend to rewatch say movies/shows/etc more than replaying video games
another factor is there's just so much content out there that I like that it's hard to say no to trying new stuff
there are books, movies, shows, and games that I "should've played years ago", still haven't, and might never, because there's just so much to choose from
I've still not even installed tunic ...
meanwhile just ten minutes ago I was in the Tunic randomizer channel engaging in a debate about what the default randomization options affecting combat difficulty should be
ive replayed Skyrim a lot too, i think i've done like 10 playthroughs
Skyrim is the best game
that's true
It came out on the 360, isn't that crazy
that is kind of insane
oh yeah? prove it by telling us how many versions you own
i remember my babysitter's son had an Xbox 360 and he played Skyrim on it
the game i replay most often is fire emblem three houses, but the game i played most of is absolutely ff14 now. does doin dailies count as replayability?
You only need one version of Skyrim
One
yeah FF14 is a perfect example of a "highly replayable genre" that I have zero interest in and thus "don't replay games much" as a sort of side effect
it's also a perfect example of "yes I know I should play it for the story maybe someday"
what genre/type of games do u generally prefer
Videogame
i guess shooters ?
Dad games
This week on Semi-Ramblomatic, Yahtzee's talking all about the "dad game".

You play farmville?
yesss i just watched this video yesterday
metroidvanias are by far my favorite genre, but I'm also attached to puzzle games, platformers, survival horror, spectacle fighters, shooters, hack-and-slashers, and mixes thereof
a genre i don't like is traditional turn based rpgs
I will fight you
im sorry !
Waits until it's my turn to attack
they're really boring to me
Disco Elysium is the best turn-based RPG don't at me
Menuing...
there are some exceptions like Undertale and Deltarune i guess
I would only disagree because Disco is so minimal on the turn based combat stuff and it's so much more heavy on narrative and themes than anything
cant beleive cap hates pokemon
Undertale probably is in the "exception proving the rule" bucket here since it's not only a deconstruction, but even when you do engage in combat it tends to be a realtime minigame like bullet hell or platforming
yeah
that's the joke
visual novels and turn based strategy, but honestly as long as i can get attached to characters and/or theyre well written, i can power thru most genres
i am however bad at platformers and dont enjoy rhytm games much
honestly I've never really thought of Undertale as turn based
i like hack and slash, rhythm, and strategy games
well, yeah, the actual game often isn't, even if the kinds of RPGs that are usually turn-based are its primary target of parody and deconstration
at this point sayin i like rpgs doesnt feel like it narrows down, anything, so i skip that
it's a turn based dating sim
that's a nice looking cabin
Soulslikes, survival horror, and shooters are my favorite
Also whatever hotline Miami is, I guess
Indie Game!
...twin-stick shooter?
Oh yeah twin-stick shooters are always a good time
Top-down shooter
Man, I was always interested n Metaphor re-Fantazio because Atlus, but I didn't expect to do so well on reviews.
I was planning to wait a bunch before playing it but this is getting me the itch
it's weird how shooters are the only genre that we subgenre by camera angle
Like 1942?
wheres my 2nd person shooters at
Oh right
Not enough first person games with melee combat, ig. Sad!
Chivalry II and Kingdom Come: Deliverance are so fun
Shadow Warrior
I heard from toby fox today that chapter 3 is coming along well

Technically, that is a shooter [sweetie pls do the bit]
pew pew
you replied ya silly goof
Fuck you're right
talkolly
.configWittyCooldown 0
It is a shooter but it has good melee combat
Oh right, Vermintide
i forgot every witty
Speaking of first person melee combat, this just came out 2 days ago:

Gosh I wanted to play it too I don't know why I haven't
I'll play tunic eventually
I initially wrote it off as probably being too derivative, but Ixrec has convinced me otherwise
makes sense, it does wear its inspiration on its sleeve and is more playing with tropes than doing wholly original stuff
(derivations of soulslike mechanics don't count because I like them too much)
More people should derive mechanics from good games.
All the games that derived from Return of the Obra Dinn I played were excellent
i started playin baldurs gate 3 this week, was havin fun.... n then squeenix decided to do moogle treasure trove event from tuesday til new patch and i snapped back to ff14 mode
back to mmo mines with meee
a lot of Tunic's appeal for me is that it nailed things which imo some of the games that inspired it fumbled at, so it probably feels much more original to me than it's really "supposed to"
Oh nice, I haven't tried BG3
I've had that game in my wishlist for so long now
It is legit a revolutionary game
I liked Joel Haver's video about BG3 a lot
So unique
I probably should play an "Obra Dinn-like" but just haven't heard of... any? maybe that golden idol or whatever one, but that didn't grab me for some reason
obra dinn is to mystery games what stardew valley is to farming sims, in this essay i will-
Playing it will ruin every mistery game after it tho
Because it's so obviously the correct way of doing them
This is the second time I saw a green name make an in this essay i will- joke and I'm loving it
I don't play any farming sims, what is stardew to them?
even disco elysium?
Obra dinn
I don't think DE is a "mystery game", in the genre sense
tho i guess paradoxically the mystery itself is backseat in that one
Did you play the language one, Chants of Sennar, that's an obra dinn like if you ask me
hm, I can kinda see that
inb4 one of you links a video about "metroidbranias" and how no one can agree what they are
also yes I played it and loved it and bought my mom a copy and she loved it
I like it more than Obra Dinn, but like, it's close
more than once in randomizer discord I've ended up in a conversation trying to figure out how you'd shake up Chants of Sennaar enough to make it fun to replay, but we haven't cracked it yet
Hm, I don't know if that one is doable
I tend to take the "sadly I don't think so" side of that question
The stuff you find are so context specific
i need to play Obra Dinn, i love Pope's other game Papers Please
They made up several different cultures, and the way they influence each other languages, you can't reshuffle that and make it make sense
it's weird that Papers Please is the one I never finished, when somehow I played Republia Times which nobody remembers exists
Papers Please was difficult
(this is your cue to come out of the woodwork, 00s flash game players)
Papers Please activates something in my lizard brain
Ah, oopsie. Turns out a Relic I had draws infinite cards.
Master Quest Spirit temple is FREAKY
maybe i need to get a job as a passport inspector idk
did you see #tailchat message the other day?
no i'll have to watch it later
Why did they make it like this?
The bridge is supposed to fall in my direction
This guy fell into the void and did not die
He's chasing me
This is some creepypasta level shit
what game is this?
Ocarina of Time Master Quest
It's crazy to me that you enjoy the gameplay so much, because that game stresses me the fuck out
I've only seen the demo so far but it looks legitimately incredible, I expect it to be huge it's just not very well marketed and it's getting massively overshadowed by Sparking Zero right now
It's the first 3D zelda
Maybe you do need to get a job as a passport inspector
The main cast is super fun and hey the MC actually talks in this game finally
It feels nice to actually hear your player character for once
so I only heard of the game an hour ago and the trailer is telling me "Persona but a fantasy fantasy setting instead of urban fantasy", is that fair?
He's trying to go back to his grave but he can't
there's def a lot of pressure in the last levels
From what I have seen it seems the story is just really really well plotted, not like Persona games don't do that, but it's good to see that they really knocked the fantasy incarnation out of the park
I didn't even make it that far
Not quite Persona really, it feels like the Elden Ring equivalent of "here's a new game where we apply all the things we learned from the previous games", there's a free demo right now that I absolutely recommend trying out yourself if you're curious about it
My family and I died horribly or something
Progress from the demo also transfers to the full game
I might try the demo to make sure of the performance if nothing else actually
right, probably won't play it myself, just want to be clear since it sounds like this is about to be the thing suddenly everyone I know is talking about for the next month
Since you know, japanese developers and pc ports
I died but my family fled to another country, I think was my first ending
Could be worse
Good
I keep seeing RDR2 and my brain keeps autocorrecting to R2D2
Yeah that'll happen
it's like, so good. it might end up on my favorite games ever list
The demo is pretty surprisingly huge to be fair
there's quite a lot to see and do but hey that's pretty good to me since it's free.99
I would definitely get metaphor if I wasn't already midway through SMTV:V
Even just the world is pretty good it's all pretty interesting looking so far
This year has had quite a few unexpected bangers.
I already thought it'd have been a meh year for games but if it keeps going this way...
Just have a few months to make up for the rest of the year but it seems to be a pretty stacked end of the year

reading this question and then realizing it wasn't a bit aged me like 10 years i think
I mean yes, FFVII is 27 years old game, but also its remake is still releasing rn and she's in it
the allusion to folk legends about ways to prevent her death probably counts as still being 27 years old

if I actively looked for games I own but haven't played yet, I would never get around to starting any of them
ah, I don't think my library is that big haha
Every once in a while I look through my library and play an older game I never got around to
nice nice
that's probably an exaggeration, but I mean I think it's inevitable that we end up with some stuff we just never got around to playing
My goal is to stay around 33% played
at least for me fully enjoying a game has a lot to do with being in the right mood for it, so sometimes I get a thing on sale and the mood never hits when I'm in between games
(sorry Citizen Sleeper, someday, I promise)
yeah that's fair enough. Having a matching mood makes an experience much better.
I always confuse citizen sleeper with resident sleeper
a lot of that is me strongly preferring games with some mechanical challenge or complex story to them, where not being fully focused on the game means I'm missing out on whatever the game was trying to do for me
games where the appeal is more about spending time within the game world than any specific activity aren't my thing, and make more sense as "impulse plays"
I guess I fall more into the latter than the former, even though i like the former.
Like with elden ring, what i've played so far of it anyway. I enjoy the combat system, but i enjoy just traveling and talking to NPCs just as much.
yeah, big AAA open world games tend to be perfect examples of this
I've seen a lot of Elden Ring, but if I was playing it myself (assuming I hit none of the usual fromsoft problems) I'd just beeline to all the major map markers and skip half the catacombs and so on
the way people talk about RDR2 also tells me I'd prefer to watch it than to play it (hi cap)
i love open world games but Elden Ring has failed to really grab me, i'm not sure why
I guess it's just the fights you'd be after Ixrec? not the exploration?
i'm almost wondering if DS1 was a huge fluke for me
oh boy, "exploration"

so I've mentioned probably too many times that metroidvanias are my favorite genre
exploration is kind of a thing in that genre
aww, that's a shame Captain Mario.
but "exploration" means different things to different people
DS1 also failed to grab you tho
there's the "getting lost in a fictional world" kind where you don't have an objective per se, it's more about vibes and moods and spending time, the part of Elden Ring's appeal that's more like Animal Crossing than anything else
yeah but then when it got me it really got me and it was all i thought about for like a month
the metroidvania kind of "exploration" that I'm into is more about filling out all the empty spots on the in-game map, marking every item I can't reach and door I can't open yet, and deciding what route to take when I want to revisit an area with abilities I found later, eventually working towards getting 100% of the collectable items, etc
Play Crystal Project
Could be the same for elden ring. Just give it another shot after you're done with RDR2
yeah perhaps
See that's interesting, because I play Elden Ring's exploration very much in this manner, just with a different context.
There's map pin icons for example
and less abilities i need, and more skill/runes
so, this gets to the ways in which "metroidvania" implies being at least part platformer
Some enemies are too spooky to fight now, but maybe later i'll be able to fight em
in that AAA style of big open world, there generally is little platforming/movement tech, or not very good platforming, and walking to each map marker isn't nearly as interesting as what you do there
huh, so it's that travel is boring?
often a literal "hold W simulator" in most of these games going for photorealism
In Elden Ring you usually find interesting stuff along the way to where you're headed
It's fairly dense
i still haven't found the kkk
Lol you get good cowboy points for killing them
this is also why I've been a big fan of "small open worlds" that had some non-trivial movement mechanics so I was almost never simply holding a direction and waiting for my character to get somewhere
A Short Hike has the jumping, gliding and climbing
The Pathless has this flow of shooting targets to build sprint and dash chains
Did you see the release of Echo Point Nova?
I got lost in the pathless so I stopped playing
and nearly all of my favorite metroidvanias either have a dash button, or have few enough long straight hallways that "waiting" rarely comes up
Y'know it also helps that Elden Ring and RDR2 are visually beautiful
Maybe I'll get back to it
yeah, part of why I'm watching someone else play ER is that it's pretty
people have speculated that Doom: The Dark Ages might be semi open world. idk how true that is or how it'll work but it's an interesting idea
Do you just mean having a hub area, or...?

Game: Spyro 1, 2 or 3
Objective: Both players get to pick a game they want to play (must be different games) and then get 30 minutes to collect as many gems as possible, after the 30 minutes, players switch games and give each other their gem totals, players then race to grab the amount of gems their opponent did. No Gulp Skip and starting from ...
Spyro Gran Prix? sounds fun
Starts by collecting gems for thirty minutes, then swapping games and trying to match the first phase's opponent gem count first
Right side is Spyro 1. Left is Spyro 2
ahh interesting, so they have an hour total in both games?
No, phase 2 ends whenever one player reaches the gem number the other player got in phase 1
The winner is the one that reaches it first
ok!

Says I've played 47% of my library, but I know there's a fair number that have 0 hours on my steam despite me having beat the game... on steam. So dunno what's going on there
heh, stopwatch mode for speedrunning
stopwatch was a popular way to play Wolf: ET competitively, teams switched sides and tried to beat each other's objective completion times
Yeah it's now considered novel
UT99 also did it with the Assault mode 🙂
Pfffffff
If you lose enough times the game basically goes ''easy mode now available''

was gonna try to play Fortnite on my Steam Deck but apparently it doesn't run on Linux so there goes that idea
Yeah, online multiplayegames tend to have invasive anticheat that just can't run on Linux
(Indie games don't suffer from this often)
i am vaguely disappointed, was just feeling a little nostalgic for back when i played fortnite religiously in like 2018-2019
You could run it on your phone
I'm surprised the switch version is even still supported given how poorly it runs lol
So yeah uh
Silent Hill 2 Remake is actually great
I dare say, it's a better remake than the RE remakes
Extremely unexpected because I had no faith in Bloober but damn they actually did it, they did pretty good
I did, but I'm saying it again because now I finished it
There was still a chance that the game would fall off when I said it before, but now that I saw it all the way through to the end, yeah it's actually just great all the way through
That's good to hear
A lot of people like/have nostalgia for SH2 original
so if the remake is good, that's good

like, what the main quest is, or deciding which of the thousand activities you want to do?
Just do what I do: Have a general idea of what you want to do and get sidetracked to shit. Easy. /s
When I was playing it the way I did things was doing any quests I particularly liked more than others (mostly Gerudo or Zora related quests) or just try to ''clear'' a region of the map and focus on quests on that region first
The last time I played, I took time to find all of the geoglyphs
I spent 7 hours straight getting all the roots and towers lol
enabling every warp point was always my primary objective, because once I had those it was easy to revisit areas whenever I stumbled into a quest later that asked me to run all over the world, and that gave me a decent framework for "going everywhere" at least once
Which is definitely not the intended way of doing that
I get decision paralysis way too easily
so... open world games are good practice?
These things are why I find it so nice to play a game like Link Between Worlds or Echoes because they have the same general idea of BOTW and TOTK but so much more compact and small that I don't get all that stress from all the stuff there is to do and all the places there are to go
I feel like my best advice would be to just not worry about it that much and if a certain quest catches your attention just don't think about it too hard and do it, because the way I play these games which is ''I HAVE to finish all these things before I think about progressing and I have to make sure I cleared every area'' is a sure fire way to suck all the fun out of it
It's just awkward to hop in with a scattered inventory and quest log
true, it's awkward to resume any game after a long break
Restarting is likely a mistake
this sort of thing is why I usually try to fully finish or fully drop a game before moving on, to extent that's feasible
and, you know, still fun
focus on what will be actually fun
avoid any pressure to be any kind of completionist, especially from yourself, especially in a game as large as TotK
That's good advice
I really hope the next next Zelda will be more like Echoes because I don't think I can handle another 100+ hour BOTW-TOTK style endeavour any more
I can definitely see some players being upset and thinking that not doing a game as big as TOTK or even bigger would be a 'step down' but man it's just too large
Ixrec — 11/28/2023 9:36 PM
I do think "make the next game TotK but EVEN BIGGER" would be a very bad move
but I also think there are more interesting things they can do with the format than just MOAR STUFF
Nintendo: What if we made it SMALLER?
touche
The biggest trick I have for handling choice paralysis is to lower your threshold for discarding options
If you can find any reason to not pick one of the options, remove it from the list
Even if the reason is arbitrary
They really kind of did! It feels like ALBW but bigger obviously, and honestly the size and scale of the game in every sense feels just right
But of course, Echoes is not only a 2D Zelda game but also it has a lot of reused assets so it's not ''the true sequel'' (I've already seen people say that), so we'll see if they still go for this for the next ''true'' Zelda
That's tough
It gets easier once you do it a few times
It was my first Xbox 360 game and I love it
I always wanted to do parkour but I've learned it requires you to have good upper body strength
bandai should just give up and bring back support to tekken 7,8 is so dogshit and they are completely clueless bout what they are doing with the game
fundamentals of the series that used to be required for high level play for decades are suddenly being punished, instead of playing defensive you have to go on mega offense and if you dont have a character thats capable of that you're either fucked or have to put in SIGNIFICANTLY much more effort just to survive let alone win,and even then its sometimes not possible cuz of the amount of 50-50s
movement is completely useless now as well in a series that was defined by its movement
the gmae was fucked since the start but i had some hope they would bring it back to the proper path but nah,its still nearly just as fucked as before despite being out for almost a year
did they do a new change to the game or do you mean the system changes going into 8?
1.heat system being added, heavily rewards aggressive play and punishes defense
2.movement has been nerfed to the point its near useless, encourages aggressive play punishes defense cuz you cant option select as well anymore
3.new additions and changes to characters made a lot of them much more focused on aggression, some of them dumbing down characters to just a barrage of safe or heavily evasive moves or 50-50s or other dumb properties
4.entire concept of installs being added, fuck that, even 2d meter wasnt as bad in t7
5.new characters that have been added all focus on both heat and installs and are also designed as heavily aggressive characters giving even less chance for defense
and defense focused characters being also being pulled to the more offensive side, which just ruins them cuz they were designed to be focused on defense but now they are bad at both isntead
both
oh yeah forgot to mention regenerable heath and chip damage,2 of the most dogshit concepts in the case of tekken
I know in the leadup to the release they were pretty keen on making the game as a whole more aggressive, though looking at the steam charts, it seems to be working?
T8 is doing really well on steam at least
stat wise it will do well, but its hurting dedicated players a lot
if a person isnt invested heavily in the games ofc just pressing buttons and seeing shit happen will be more fun than getting every one of your attacks blocked and punished, but that hurts competitive integrity and its showing
comp wise theres like 2 meta characters and if you dont pick them you're literally throwing cuz of how much better they are
That does seem solveable with some balance patches, but like you said, it's been a year, and there was that patch with the floor break changes.
only a part of it is solvable with them, another part needs them to change the game fundamentally
the competitve scene is a huge advertisement for the game, so one would hope they'd want to keep it diverse in terms of roster
unfortunately that isnt the case, tekken 7 had fucked up metas as well but they werent anywhere near fucked still, not counting early leroy days all other metas had at the very least top 5-10 characters that were still very viable, and the rest of the cast wasnt far enough behind that it would be impossible to win,but now its worse,2 top characters everyone else suffers or has to bullshit their way through it and hope it works
i don't know if they can 'walk back' the changes from 7 to 8 so easily, since they have a larger audience already bought in to those new changes. They could do it and just lose all the new playerbase and someones probably made the calculation at the top that they'd rather do less work and keep the new playerbase rather than older dedicated players.
i mean they definitely cant, thats p much why im saying the game is fucked, what scares me even more is that each new game went towards this direction bt none of them this hard,so fuck knows what they will do in t9/tag 3
I mean, if the games direction has fundementally shifted away from what you like, why would you even play t9?
and its not as simple as just "playing the old games" cuz playerbases for those are shrinking if not entirely extinct since its a multiplayer only game
hmm, I guess it depends on who you know and where you are right?
its still the only fighting game that fits me and i have invested hundreds of hours into it
are you still having fun with t8 though?
kinda but not really, even if you matchmake on third party platforms its still gonna be visible,at most you'll have a couple players to play with and thats it
depends really what character im going against
yeah I guess that makes sense
Though in some cases, small fighting game communities can make games worth playing fairly easily
Melty Blood as an example i guess.
it's not huge, but it held players pretty well
MvC2 has somehow held out as a competive game even with the failures of MVCI
It's honestly kinda sad seeing how Justin Wong managed to convince people to refund the remakes because he happend to thrash like, half the servers for those games on release
or maybe all the servers for those games, dude is a beast.
but then it gets more about knowing who you are against not actually getting good at the game
how you approach a game changes completely when its same few people you go against, you look for ways to exploit their specific quirks instead of relying on just being fundamentally better
Sure, but idk how many players you need then to reliable get fresh faces.
Not many games are SF or Tekken
they can't rely on pulling millions of sales
hell, even the "popular" Gran blue Fantasy versus Rising only gets like, 700-1000 max daily players
yeah and thats the point, theres not really many options to switch to so im stuck with tekken, ive playued enough discord fighters and im more than confident in the fact that a small community is not who i wanna play with
so if i wanna play any fighting game at all its tekken, and that shit is degrading fast
fair enough, that sucks
Nintendo Museum seems to emulate games on a PC, as evident by the device disconnecting sound lol.

I was thinking about mentioning it
Will be P2W since it’s Netease https://x.com/geoffkeighley/status/1845864701130928590?
it's actually an interesting question; it's one thing for a story to have stock of an mmo that failed years later, but what about these stores who bought all these copies and then it failed?
hm... ideally, laws would be updated to classify a multiplayer-only game whose servers were taken down with no private hosting alternative to be a defective product you simply can't sell any more, and then the conflict would shift to retailer vs producer where it arguably belongs?
probably more fun and coherent than the actual game

The next Nintendo console's codename is officially: Ounce
.....why?
Probably because it's small
why was the Gamecube called Dolphin ?
Because it would leap over the competition
Xbox consoles had wierd names too
One of them Lockhart like that professor Gilderoy Lockhart
It's just a codename. The Switch's codename was Project NX or something like that.
Because it was the next step
The PS5 was Project Scarlet IIRC
Or wait was that the Xbox Series X
Something was Project Scarlet
Because red kills the green

god dammit
Capcom's insistence on not doing a new Darkstalkers is really frustrating, it's up there with their most popular franchises, still remains as popular as it was before, people clearly want a new one, they continue to acknowledge Darkstalkers is still in their minds by adding characters to other fighting games like MVC and adding cosmetic Darkstalker stuff in SF6, and they just keep refusing to do it, ever since 1997

And an early tool that generates gameplay videos that are not specific to one game

.....ok its most likely not an ai they are just really weird
(tbh that the boys parody was hilarious)

A more advanced version specific to doom

Cool tech, but replacing game engines? lol, no
why yes, I'd love to run a version of Super Mario Bros that takes orders of magnitude more resources to run than the original
Yeah the claims are absurd and stupid
also you cant copyright anything made by an AI, so good luck not having your game pirated and even legally re-sold day one
you could sue but it wouldnt stand up in court
Well I mean, the whole point of a game engine is that you can make a game with it, with specific choices and design and everything. A demonstration of Mario or Doom re-created with image AI is.... not that at all
This is irrelevant. People could not pirate the game because it's not a game, it's an interactive video
I feel like generative AI isn't being utilized very well in applications like these
Infinite Craft is the only good AI game I've seen so far. You couldn't make it without AI (mostly) and it still has exact rules of play
For Infinite Craft, the main thing that AI does there is provide a vast pool of knowledge from which to generate items. If you took enough time to collect data for the game, you could feasibly do it without AI, it's just that it's quicker to do it with a language model
carykh created Elemental 3 years prior which worked based on user-submitted (and user-approved) combinations, and couldn't keep it up forever
I bought Teardown

Was gonna buy Abiotic Factor, but decided to buy Teardown instead
Have fun
I'm still waiting for a big sale on it
It should be a tenth the current price
ayyy crow country update
and merch?
That's unfortunate. Good luck with whatever you play instead
Now in Early Access, Hades II is the bewitching sequel to the award-winning rogue-like dungeon crawler, and just got its first Major Update! Featuring an all-new region, a powerful new weapon, new allies, and much more.

Was scrolling through Reddit's front page because I'm bored at work (1-ply rolls today, which means I'm not needed), and I see this...

Literally never heard of this game before, yet somehow it has won 3 GOTY awards. I call shenanigans.
what did they do to dionysus
ew the cards are NFT based and it uses the Ethereum blockchain
and it's still a Beta
and 3 Game of the Year Awards is a damn stretch
they won 3 awards in the second annual Gam3 Awards
Best Strategy Game, Best Card Game, and Game of the Year
I can't find any mention of any other "awards"
it's crypto bullshittery, don't touch it
Obviously it's crypto bullshit and I won't touch it, half the ads on Reddit are like that, I just found the awards claim to be stupid beyond belief.
Also, apparently NFTs are like 96% dead in all the markets, sooooooo...yeah, good luck selling an NFT game, lol.
theres still money to be milked in the few that believe
I'm convinced that Square Enix is that last 4% still standing.
They just will not admit that they screwed up with NFTs and are dedicated to sticking with it.
He has large... grapes. 🍇
despite being bi,not a fan of this sprite
...Huh. So he does.
Oh my god i was not expecting that😭
All of them though
HIM THOUGH
just look how goddamn cute he is
I know, haha
Love the pink highlights, they stand out so well.
i hope Hades 2 is complete soon i wanna play it so bad
I'd say first quarter of 2025 at the earliest
Clearly before Silksong
We'll see the heat death of the universe before silksong
Oof yeah people over twitter are losing their minds at some of the latest layoffs including some pretty big senior artists, this one was the one responsible for that huge Ahri skin, I guess still not good enough for Riot
I hereby officially organize a hundred game of the year awards and award them all to this game
Sending headset on warranty but with a little surprise so that it maybe can make someone's day better
Man, there's a heckuva lot going on in here
Found waldo
oops
