though I care more for a co op style multiplayer where I can do quests and gigs with a buddy or two
sorry, a choom or two
ngl, i would LOVE a multiplayer-designed cyberpunk game
Part of why it launched like shit is they spent too much time planning on a multiplayer system that they then abandoned
We've got some very cool info to announce today...

I finished GTA IV yesterday. I remember when the Internet collectively thought this was the worst GTA 3D game... how time has flied. It's pretty great actually
it also runs very well and looks nice with today's mods and DXVK

Yeah good luck with that when fair use exists Nintendo. Even disney knows its a lost cause to try it.
the context is that a shareholder asked what they were going to do about it and the president had to respond.
It's also so vague that it could be referring to literally anything, not necessarily specifically Bowsette or anything like that
That being said I find the idea of nintendo lawyers knocking on the door of a girl who posted her bowsette cosplay on instagram to be hilarious
Lolololol, Nintendo has already lost this war a thousand times over the second they started to wage it. You can try to protect your fans from being uncomfortable, okay, that's fine and dandy, but Rule 34 has been in existence for literally thousands of years, and it'll still exist many thousands of years after Nintendo is long gone.
The shareholders are so stupid.
To be fair, at least from what I've seen this works in Japan
I've noticed some japanese artists who are careful with what they post, or have gotten in trouble or had to delete their works because it was from a Nintendo game, I also see it with Uma Musume where japanese artists at least the majority don't draw certain things with the characters because since the characters are based on real life horses there's certain specific rules that artists are asked to keep in mind and what not
So I guess if it works in japan then that's all they really care about at the end of the day
When Uma musume was announced to get an english release on twitter I remember seeing japanese accounts saying to please keep in mind the rules when creating any fan content and people replied with ''yeah that's definitely not gonna happen''
yeah, there's a significant culture difference, and this is pretty clearly clickbait rather than a change in policy
My guess is since that was the most āpopularā one for a while and one of the few fan characters nintendo actually a Knowledged at one point
This was already basically confirmed by the source code leak last year but we got official confirmation now https://www.pcgamer.com/games/grand-theft-auto/it-was-so-much-of-a-cash-cow-former-gta-5-dev-says-ill-fated-agent-trevor-dlc-was-sacrificed-at-the-altar-of-gta-online/
the good old Neverball game got a web port recently, so you can play it in your browser: https://play.neverball.org/
It reminds me of super monkey ball
You also have the freedom to run, study, modify, and distribute Neverball and its modified versions. Grab the source code here: neverball-source.zip
so is this from the original creator, or does it fall under "abandonware"?
it's an open source game
it was originally released around 2003 and has been continuously developed since
and yeah, the web port is made from the same codebase as the native version using Emscripten. It's not a ground-up rewrite of the game like say, Marble Blast Web
Ahhh oke. So it was inspired by Monkey Ball, then?
yeah
ha Lester referenced Niko in GTAV
he also refrences the gta online player character in the same mission
the "too chaotic" one
hops on gtao
first thing in chat is slurs
try to get money for basic facilities
everyone in the lobby either explodes or gets disconnected
the game fucking crashes
joins new lobby
gets constantly harrassed by rp lvl 800s with oppressors
GTAO is the game that is massively profitable but we don't know why
the player experience is frankly terrible, I tried it a few hours back in 2016
i have quite a bit of hours on it and yeah, idk, the experience is horrible,by paying you are getting rid of the entire point of the game(grinding) unless fun is defined by sadism, and the rewards for paying arent at all substantial
I tried Multi Theft Auto as well once and while it had its share of issues, at least it didn't take forever to load and has no microtransactions š
Something to note here: Nintendo has a track record of suing a fan for a nsfw pokemon fan comic (which they sold for money) in 1999. They sued for copyright infringement, but they stated that it was becuase it was an "inappropriate depiction of their content"
The court's decision was that the comic was indeed guilty for copyright infringement.
yeah when money gets involved they have a more of a case
but if its free? yeah good luck
I mean, it depends what you mean with success
Like, if it costed very little to port it, might still be worth it
im just surpised they even bother making ports for it
Even if you move very few copies compared to other platforms
does the article offer any meaningful insight on the obvious follow-up questions here, or is it just the headline?
it does show stats
"Assassin's Creed Mirage was downloaded approximately 123,000 times since June 6, Appfigures says. However, it has only managed gross revenue of $138,000."
for example
138k is not nothing, assuming you didn't spend a ton to port it
Like it's a footnote in the overall sales but like, if it's not losing money why not
unfortunately labour costs are something ubisoft would have and that wasnt disclosed
I think that the question to ask is what Ubisoft expected
If they expected this result and spent appropriately it might be a successful launch
It also doesn't help that users are often nagged to download Steam instead of getting the App Store version, since the App Store enforces sandboxing.
This can give issues when modding.
As a sidenote, I like Death Stranding but I can't think of a title less suited for mobile.
Yeah...
you know what the one game I'd be excited to see on mobile is
As cool as these games are, you're either an iPad gamer with a controller or a Mac user.
Stanley Parable
Which is kind of amusing like, it's not a problem, more games on more platforms is always a positive, but it's funny
Yeah but think of those development hours, they could have gone to making more dlc. By dlc I mean skins.
(given a certain baseline level of port quality, sure)
Also Stanley Parable doesn't have a native apple silicon port unfortunately, so I don't see it happening on mobile.
It runs good on Mac tho.
to be clear, the reason I'd be hyped for that would be new content making jokes about other mobile games
I don't think those devs would ever do the port without adding such content
Narrator: "Oh Stanley... why are you playing this on a mobile phone!? You could have gotten a Playstation, a Nintendo Switch, or even a PC? Oh, did that hurt? Did I touch a wound? The only reason you can play this is because of how many people use mobile phones, and yet somehow you're playing the most un-definitive version yet! A small screen, low graphical fidelity, and terrible touch controls... oh wait... you are using a game controller, well at least you can do that."
and there's an ending where your screen gets slowly engulfed by ads
and of course (fake) microtransactions and gacha
Narrator: "Due to mobile users being stubborn of buying apps for more than a dollar, we have added advertisement into our game! Don't worry, its actually related to your personal interests! Before I show you one however, could you agree to the privacy policy in data collection?"
now I want to replay ultra deluxe

Pfffft. Oh boy.
first skin that has lower stats
But Iāll blow up any fortnite cybertruck that I see on sight.
And if someone gifts me one, thatās their problem
lol
Also I donāt think you can randomly gift people
That would be a huge oversight
Damn, even if you're getting hunted down by someone else?
You just see your hunter nodding vigorously
I see that Epic Games continues to be fad-chasers.
I recently saw one drive by...with a pair of truck nuts
Classy.
I wouldn't even be surprised if it was elon who contacted them
So after playing ZZZ, I think Iāve gained more appreciation about free to play only cosmetic purchases.
ZZZ is fun, the story is good, the gameplay is solid. But when I saw the word āGachaā, I thought it was gonna be like two or three economies.
Its not two or three, its like 43 bloody different economies! Level up systems, character buffs, character skills, your mandatory lootboxes, rarity item system, crafting system, and a bloody life battery system. With like ten or twelve economic conversions, convoluted systems, and other things⦠it puts an extreme sour taste in my mouth.
Now sure, I āshould have knownā. But not even TF2, Fortnite, The Finals, and probably a few others that Iām forgetting⦠go as crazy and hard as this game.
My god am I divided about it.
Its such a shame, the gameplay is ROCK SOLID.
yeah, these days the business model is a required part of any trustworthy review (for a game that isn't just pay once upfront)
there's such a wide range for how harmless or exploitative these microtransaction systems can get
i honestly think these devs are worst than anything Iāve ever seen
Like seriously
Just how many more systems?
Login rewards
Weekly rewardsā¦

Artificial quest limits
not even fortnite cmon holy crap
I've heard of all of these systems and seen (not played) games with several of them, but "twelve economic conversions" (assuming you mean 12 separate virutal currencies?) would be a record by a large margin
Mihoyo seems to be specialising in just that. Make a fantastic game gameplay wise... then make truckloads of money because of all the gacha and other systems and whatnot that's in it
Well some you canāt buy, some are basically world items hence grind, but some are paywalled. Its VERY CONFUSING.
Not even Destiny goes this hard

There is so much Microtransactions, and they already have 50 million players
I watched someone play ZZZ earlier. Yeah, the actual game seems really well done, but there's so much mtx going on. It's on mobile too, so that tracks I suppose
It's everywhere. They multiplatform like mad
i donāt think I can get mad anymore at only cosmetic free to play games, I think its the lesser evil after playing and seeing this
God
Have mercy
This game broke me, wow.
You could instead like games that don't do this nor that
The conflicting thing is that ZZZ is actually a really good game, from what I've seen
I want a few online games and unfortunately, most of my friends play free to play Flitter.
So donāt have much choice.
Organizing a Quake 2 match takes years longer than teaming up on a free to play title.
Honestly the ājust donāt play these gamesā doesnāt work anymore. I just know more and more are becoming live services. Maybe Iāll have to find the few that wonāt drive me insane.
But yeah, this sucks.
I find it so funny that everything you compared its BM with are nowhere close to the actual mtx gacha game zone
maybe it depends on whether "gacha" is supposed to imply eastern developers and/or the eastern gaming cultures where "pay to win" is not considered a derogatory term?
I donāt understand this message.
What is BM?
business model?
p2w is definitely a derogatory term here, but its definition tends to be much more specific
While I understand your frustrations, I was saying that I find it funny that you were complaining about its system by comparing it with games like TF2 or Destiny
TF2 and Destiny still stinks donāt get me wrong
But this game made them look like heaven
i donāt know how
How was that even possible?
Well afaik it is "the standard Hoyoverse model"
It is criticized even by mobile game fans, but it is what it is
Unfortunately not the worst in this side of industry
No wonder Microsoft is pushing bedrock so hard, they know it prints money.
Even Sony, Nintendoā¦
I remember Animal Crossing Pocket Camp
my understanding was that ever since Genshin Impact proved these BMs can generate truly stupid amounts of revenue beyond any other kind of game, every big game-adjacent corporation has been looking to copy that success
See, the part I said funny is exactly this part; it is both sad and funny for me to see the reaction from someone clearly not used to...this side of the industry
The dark side of the game industry
This aināt the dark side, this is hell.
I don't play any of these games myself, but I see them dissected all the time in youtube
I didnāt ask for Excel sheets lmao.
I just feel bad for those who are manipulated into buying more and more, the whales.
Hoyoverse model in particular is infamous for making players exhausted very quickly
The overall trend of mobile game industry is basically "play an hour a day, but every single day"
aka limited grindy gameplay
Which is, surprisingly, how it adapted to its userbase
this is one of the reasons why I don't play any of the games affected by this
Honestly the literal hellscape is mobile gacha rhythm games
I feel like Thanos regretting judging harshly to other f2p games.
Does destiny have 'power' you can buy or is it still mainly cosmetics? Same for TF2? Cause otherwise, western game that has money being needed for progression is probably Diablo Immortal... and i'm guessing a reason for that is that it was co-developped with Netease, a chinese company, who are probably into gacha as well~
I know TF2 still has weapons that behave differently.
Because they tend to have "point-based competitions" - they want you to play for hours during such events
People actually play for like, more than 12 hours a day
so about single player games
wait Ubisoft is your first thought for single player games?
There is a reason why I said "play only for an hour a day but every single day" is "the result of adaptation"
No
People got exhausted from this
But it is the first thought with MTX
MTX single player games is bs
Unless its DLC or Expansions, Iām not getting it.
If you add a damn store on a single player game for a couple of cosmetics or even pay 2 win elements⦠pound sand
but also far less prevalent, since they generally aren't trying to replace the conventional upfront purchase, and AFAICT those consumers are less tolerant of mtx
Fun fact, there is a mobile single player story based gacha rpg game
if I have played a game with microtransactions in the last several years, rather than learned about it from youtube videos, then I was unaware it had them
Speaking of games, ixrec, did you see this? #1032716748887179434 message still in early access unfortunately but it looks like something up your alley
oh that, I think I scrolled past it because I haven't played either Diablo or Dead Cells lol
Yes I know, which is why Iām like⦠what I am atm.

Anyhoo, Iām taking a nap for real now.
I think the article i nabbed it from mentioned it reminded them of Blasphemous
hm, in any specific way? from watching the actual video it looks like "Diablo and Dead Cells" is the more apt comparison
I think setting wise, perhaps? Lemme see if I can pull up the article
"I expect the visuals and tone to be more readily compared to Blasphemous, The Game Kitchenās pixel-art soulslike inspired by Spanish folklore. Dragon is Dead deals in a similar style of blood-drenched nightmare fuel and gothic excess, yet it differentiates itself despite some striking similarities, with its bosses being a real creative standout."
fair enough
probably not my thing though
separately
I decided I did want to finish playing Kena
and it turns out once I bought some upgrades and stopped trying to parry everything it's actually pretty fun, especially after I understood the bomb and the weak-to-arrow points; still not particularly amazing but fun

I forget exactly what I did on my own playthrough but I did find a good rhythm... and I think reduced the difficulty, as I mentioned
Definitely not the best game ever, but being in an essentially playable pixar movie? It felt super cool
Worth mentioning about this, that hoyoverse games compared to a lot of other gacha games are on the tamer side as far as how playable they are as a free to play player.
The point is completely moot for me, because the gacha monetisation format is in on itself, a major turn off for me, no matter how loose, but they aren't by any measure the worst of the lot.
I have a couple of friends that are big fans and they generally didn't spend more than 10 bucks each on each of the games.
just beat Adira btw
The monetisation model is still exploititative as fuck and prey on vulnerable people prone to gambling addictions, but it's worth mentioning at least.
Did I l mention this video yet?

lol, both of the "games more of you should play" videos I watched this week mentioned Citizen Sleeper, Casette Beasts, Void Stranger and Terra Nil
I know CB and TN aren't my thing but I've been meaning to try CS and VS for a while, just haven't been in the right mood
Citizen Sleeper is exactly the kind of game that I am either gonna play 20 minutes, or it's gonna become my identity for 5 years

Piranha Bytes, the Embracer-owned German studio behind the Gothic, Risen and ELEX series, has reportedly shut down https://t.co/RrJj5rYFJs
who
yeah idk what this is
who is Wario64 and why does all gaming news come from them
Beeg brain cop
Gothic is a fairly well known fantasy RPG series. Think elder scrolls ish, but over the shoulder. Embracer wanted to get rid of them, and they had the possibility of buying themselves out of the deal... but embracer would keep the gothic IP
The games are older though, came out in the 2000-2010 era. https://store.steampowered.com/sub/6375/ seem to be 4$ for all three
Same with Risen, actually. Also fantasy rpg
Elex is different, more sci-fi fantasy. From the looks of it, fallout-ish style
yikes on that APEX battlepass, i'm glad i stopped playing ages ago
Amazon associate. Hes been doing this since 09
Embracer was the company that bought all those studios and then laid off several people and sold studios when a deal didnt go through

As much as this would be cool and cursed, Hasbro will not allow ponies carrying weapons killing random people in Fortnite.
They rather do a Gacha style or MLP Mobile game approach if possible instead.
Which makes me think, if Disney is collabin with Epic⦠imagine if Sora gets added. Dear god the internet would have a meltdown over Sora having a gun.

lol

Its wild how casting fire isnāt that violent, imagine doing that in real lifeā¦
well maybe dont
haha yeah
It'd be so nice
It's getting really hard to make fornite collab recommendations that still sound like jokes
After Peter Griffin they had me wondering what was left
Buddha in Fortnite
Elon Musk in fortnite
snrk
become KOS
Anyway, I don't think he'd like to get blasted by bullets on sight.
I'm sure there is like a few others, would be cool to see Jak and Daxter.
we're running low on joke ones though (that are at least actually IP, lol)
goku was a good one for a while and then they actually put him in
I guess they still haven't done simpsons
wait Homer is actually. a great idea
Homie
Star Trek as well, although some folks would hate seeing that I'm sure. Would like seeing a Worf barrel emote.
Then swap the character with something absolutely hilarious.
Hugo from Lost
Gordon Freeman just to fuck with Half Life fans (me)
Waluigi would be pretty clean
Nintendo won't allow it unless its exclusive to their consoles.
I thought we were saying ones that still sound like jokes
Yeah but they prompted for Samus to Nintendo a while ago, but was denied.
They liked the idea, they just want it to be only for their consoles and shown only on Nintendo consoles.

Oh they saw it, but they want it exclusive.
wario and his hitbox is massive
I'm saying if they pitched Waluigi, Nintendo would be so shaken by the necessity that this collab exist in our lifetimes, that they'd be forced to accept whatever terms Epic gave them
The devs and artists? On board. The executives? Hell no.
everyone.
everyone.
it would re-light the fire in their souls that had burned out
also they dont want mario holding a gun
based and Gwyn pilled
Missed the convo but sora is already leaked to be coming lol
Pretty sure I posted about it in the thread already
Also the tesla cybertruck is gonna be a buyable car skin soon
So technically an elon collab?
....who cares?
I mean most people are against the collab itself yeah
They should sell the skin at 80k USD, like the real thing, as to beat League recent debacle
league debacle?
They are selling a skin at 400 bucks or something like that
tf
It's okay because it doesn't help you win
reminds me of the 300 dollar apex legends deathbox skin lol
from their Final Fantasy collab
Besides, the way it's going, Fortnite is really the only place in which you'll be able to get a Cybertruck, they stalled deliveries multiple times because it'sa cheaply made, badly engineered deathbox with a ton of problems
So they have to go back and try to fix the issues
oof

No need for recalls though.
I mean yeah, but I swear they better not do Elon Musk as a playable character. The community is probably gonna do some wild things lmao.
Oh they did those too
with how big elon's ego is, i could see it happening lol
though afaik they tend to stay away from controversial people/etc for collabs
so idk
If he pays big bucks for it, idk.
But its okay if he shows up, cuz that only gives me more incentive on who to take down faster in Fortnite.

yeah lmao
i think i fished too much
New hoyoverse game is a hit
Well obviously
is it the same game with the furry mf?
i keep getting a fuck ton of ads about it on youtube
Idk.
iirc ZZZ has furries yes
It has two playable characters that are furries

traditional FGs seem to have similar issues as Counter-Strike, their game design inherently makes cheating easier (especially in a way that's hard to detect)
it would be very hard to change their game design to make cheating harder without removing their essence or making them too casual
(say, randomizing timings or the results of certain moves to make macros unviable)
Correct.
The solutions for this arenāt better either.
Its either connecting to a server and both receive latency, or have kernel level anti-cheat.
And if someone dares say āAIā then prepare for junk data and false reports.
Its either connecting to a server and both receive latency
this doesn't avoid macro usage, which is the #1 way of cheating in FGs
Macro usage is⦠a way bigger elephant.
it is possible to detect macros a posteriori by inspecting replays, people have done this in Melee
it's not trivial for sure and would require a fair amount of processing power at a large scale
Even if you were to audit for Macros, someone could emulate fake ones as long as they can get faster repeatable presses.
Youād basically have to monitor every press
Posteriori for replays is not a bad idea, only useful for tournaments though.
Random online play will still be the mixed bag.
solution: LAN play only. If someone cheats, you kick their ass.

What exactly counts as input reading may be debatable for some, and Elden Ring has a system that seems like it might straddle the line for some people or get off on a technicality for others. Figuring out exactly how it works requires some amount of conjecture, as while we can read the AI scripts, we don't have the decompiled exe or anything, so...
"Yes, depending on your definition, but it's dumb and you can manipulate it. It doesn't read your actual inputs, just looks for the correctly tagged animations."
For ARPG fans, Last Epoch is a really fun version of that formula. I've been playing the 1.1 cycle launch and just been having a blast with Forge Guard, spinning like a beyblade and summoning swords to cut down enemies in game.
The new stuff they added is just fun to engage with, and makes you actually want to look around the map more to encounter it more often.
I've not encountered the end game changes yet, but I've gotten farther in than I have before and it's just nice.

So we discovered that @HiRezStudios is still running the servers for Global Agenda a game that I used to play every day after work back in 2011. The community now also knows about this. Now you do too.
Go play this free ancient MMO.
Shit's rad.

It's also funny that obviously the game was so dead that it barely had any people playing it, thus it looks like it peaked super high but it's actually only like a hundred
I wonder what happened in 2022
they opened a single server for the lols and folks found it
lol
@PirateSoftware @HiRezStudios Probably the same duct-tape server from this:

Im still waiting to play Alan Wake 2, I played the first one but I have SO many games to finish..
You would have to play American Nightmare to get the full story too
Fresh from your triumph on the colony ship Marathon, you are seized by the rogue AI Durandal to do his bidding in a distant part of the galaxy. Within the ruins of an ancient civilization, you must seek the remnants of a lost clan and uncover their long-buried secrets. Battle opponents ancient and terrible, with sophisticated weapons and devious...
well, back when I played the first Marathon I hit a bug where one of the levels simply failed to end and I never got to complete the game
hopefully these versions are more stable
they fix A LOT OF ISSUES
its not even funny
It basically is the way to play Marathon in current age.

Interesting, I wonder if it's possible that Zoro design is based on some historical stuff and they just copied the same thing
You think Oda is smart enough to copy historical designs?
Good fucking lord this phone has emoji suggestions
The real question is if the Internet is smart enough to check for that before getting mad about it and I know the answer to that
hey games
what kind of games that make you think "Game is good, it's only the players being bad at it"?
brawlhalla
Wildfrost
afaik the replica zoro's sword and its stand do look exactly like that, and I have not heard of any "original sword" that it copied the design of
the clearest cases are games designed to be challenging, but which also have an easier difficulty option designed to make sure anyone can still play it
Celeste and Nine Sols are two examples from different genres where it's not just the word "easy" but multiple clearly labeled sliders so you know exactly how much easier you're making it
oh, I guess Hades' "god mode" also counts
I have a different interpretation for the question; some games are simply hard in difficulty while some make it feel hard by making it annoying and inconvinient
oh, I'm used to excluding the latter by default, that stuff is even referred to as "fake difficulty" in a lot of cases
Well a lot of time I think it's mix of both
Soulslike is a good example of being in both categories
unfortunately that's probably the worst possible example because people use "soulslike" in so many different ways
Ok straight up Dark Souls is good enough then
then strong agree lol
I like when fans try to argue that "it is supposed to be inconvinient"
Oh yeah
that's one of those arguments where they could mean so many legit or non-legit things and it's incredibly hard to tell which one
Most games I play are ones that are challenging and complex
One game that's complex but not hard is Crusader Kings 2
Super easy and forgiving, but hell to learn
tbh I find it very difficult to judge how "hard" or "complex" a game is
so much of it depends on how you choose to play it and how familiar you are with similar games and several importantly different concepts getting smushed together by those words
I typically judge by first impression and by reputation
Terraria is an interesting case
It kind of shows both the good way and the bad way of increasing difficulty
Journey Mode is so good
Yeah it is a great accessibility and convinience option
And allows you to increase difficulty past the normal limits if you want
Yeah
Meanwhile the Master Mode is generally considered as a very bad way of adjusting difficulty
waste of time, might as well just use special seeds for added difficulty insteadf of master mode
dont dig up was pretty fun
Yeah gfb is so fucked up but still more interesting than master mode
Yet they did a pretty great job with expert mode
even beyond "don't do things that are just annoying", the usual notion of difficulty also mixes up several things
like in many of the hard games I play, there's a big difference between learning enemy/boss behavior well enough to counter it, having the reflexes to execute moves with the right timing, remembering the map or my inventory well enough to make plans, etc
I think personally I'm pretty good at learning enemy patterns but I have a very low skill ceiling at reflexes; if the block/parry/dodge window for a certain attack is too narrow it's functionally impossible for me and I have to play as if it's an RNG-based attack instead (which sometimes works out fine if there are other options, but in other cases it can ruin a fight others think is good)
It's possible, but if it is, it's not mentioned on the wiki for one piece for that sword
has anyone here played Void Stranger?
strange, isn't it
I guess you're saying you a-void strangers?
the proper term is "iconic"
you haven't played Halo until you've flipped over a warthog by mistake
No that's Master Chef
what does Master Chief even eat and drink
is his suit like the stillsuits from Dune that recycle urine and other fluids into drinkable water
His life support system hyper efficiently cooks his own urine into urinal cakes that he eats
Google urinal cake for more info
that was a joke
Google joke for more info
my understanding is that he eats and drinks like any other human soldier, and the suit is not really designed with long term wilderness survival in mind
Bear Grylls is a human
yum, i love those! i always eat one when i get the chance!
feel free to take that out of context
Having not watched one piece this is interesting to know
Nerd
There is also the question of how common that design for the scabbard is
Like it's a gold and red scabbard...hardly unique colors.
My personal line is if the thing in the middle of the scabbard was commonly or even rarely used, it's probably just something they saw and though looked cool.
fwiw it doesn't strike me as unique enough to get agitated about
The fact that it took weeks form the trailer for anyone to catch this, despite how popular OP is, makes me doubt it's iconic enough to copy

I don't think the infograph style is really doing a good job of pointing out what's going on here, tbh.
What's drawing people's eyes is this:
The first image was posted on the French Assassin's Creed twitter feed, the second is a listing picture from german amazon (no I don't know why it was the first result) listing for a replica of the SandaI Kitetsu. Granted, from what we can see from the first image's scabbard, we can't say they're identical, but the middle handle does seem to match very closely to what's in the second imagine, including the pebbled leather(?) under the rope wrap. And while there's only so many ways to make a stand, the stand appears to be identical to what you get if you buy the One Piece replica from Feenomenn.
Yeah it's what I meant, there are similarities but my question is more, are those design choices based on something that Oda could have seen in a museum for a katana and thought "oh, that's neat"
I wouldn't say it's impossible, but I find myself really skeptical that two artists could look at the same piece of inspiration and come up with identical outputs unless it was intentional, if that's what happened. The stand especially is what's getting me
The stand I would bet it's just like, stock stuff
Like, you go to a company that make katana replica and there are maybe 6 variants
It's like the least suspicious thing of the bunch
possibly
Actuallly now I kind of want to know if they commissioned the same company for the replica, it wouldn't surprise me too much if that was the case
There can't be more than a dozen companies that do products like this for the western market right?
Maybe; the tweet cites Pure arts limited but they appear to only be selling a replica of the helmet not the katana
I told you bro
Wild ride
How far in are you?
so, the reason I asked is that I played for an hour and a half, was getting kinda bored of the actual puzzles, and drifted off to do other stuff; I'm already worried whatever supposedly amazing stuff everyone is talking about is buried too deep for me to reach it by actually playing, or maybe it's expecting me to be far better at sokoban than I am
Hmmmm
Well the puzzles/mechanics are not the main drive no, at least not until you get the really tough ones you can enjoy cracking
The plot is in the trees, if you made it to one. The super complication of the plot is in talking and reading everything and piecing together what the game is not telling you
But it's not super obfuscated
It's easy to accidentally stumble through them
Reaching your first ending, and maybe the second playthrough is usually enough
I did get one tree interlude yes
Did you talk to the eggs?
I got the hint from the lamia but haven't figured out how to do anything with them yet
I think the best I could say while also saying the least is that the 6x6 rooms are important
not sure if I've seen any rooms of that size
anyway, I'll give it a few more tries
though this reminds me I need to get back to Patrick's Parabox, I loved those puzzles
If the game turns out to not be for you, I can say you get the exact same experience whether you play it yourself or watch someone play it, with the only difference possible frustration from the content creator not doing the things you want them to do
ok, at least it did save my post-tree progress, I was worried about that
||B051|| btw
and now I remember why I stopped here lol
Ain't no shame in looking up the solution to a room, I did it
When the game got in the way of the game
I look up when I'm stuck, a game is a game should be fun
||I had no idea void was a real choice until I did some googling earlier. Also had no idea what the point of the locusts was until just now.||
I'll just not click that
It's about what the locusts do which you should know but fair
Dive deeper, always a good choice in Void Stranger
I guess it's useful to know there are multiple things that "should" have already happened but didn't; suspecting as much was why I googled and asked about it before trying to just do another 50 puzzles
stopping at ||B075||
I understand that it is better to take internet with a bucket of salt, but it's not also too healthy to doubt everything without something to support;
Here are some stuff I can tell about this
- afaik Sandai Kitetsu is pretty much Oda's original design, it does not have any original real katana that gave inspiration.
- I have looked up google for a while but I have not found any similar design without being from One Piece.
- Sandai Kitetsu has been around for over 20 years. It's not a new thing so it'd be quite obvious when someone suddenly makes a katana that resembles it.
- The stand design by itself is very common, but the Kanji written on it isn't. While the phrase do have meaning, none of the stands I found have those Kanjis written on them.
What's written on it?
å°ę°“ē«é¢Øē©ŗ, literal translation would be "Earth Water Fire Wind Nothingness" it is like five elements
It has its origin and its meaning, and it isn't unreasonable to have it written on the katana stand, yes, but also I could not find it being actually done
of course except that one zoro katana stand
This makes me think even more that they might just be the same company
Well but if the katana looks the exact same, and the stand looks the exact same, and the exact same company made it, then it's really not a great choice from them is it?
I guess at that point you can say it's the katana company's fault?
No I mean that it might be a generic-ish stand they use.
It doesn't sound like it was something that had any specific meaning for either model
At that point it is an issue of responsibility
"It's not that we simply used that katana from One Piece, it's just that everything lined up and it looks the same" really won't work
Honestly, for the katana I can see an argument, the stand is absolutely nonsense
Well as I said, although the phrase can be on any stand, I haven't really found one other than the zoro stand with the phrase
Yeah but it's a super generic thing to write on a stand, if it had any meaning related to OP except being the one thing they write on the stand with that replica I'd care
Here's another problem, if I want to go specific.
The phrase is from 17th century
AC:Shadows is based on 16th.
I don't see the problem
Oh for this it's not about copying issue, it's more about "yeah if you wanted some cool looking phrase then you could have researched more"
The thing is it's not that "the stand looks the same, this must be the same", but rather "wow everything looks the same, and even the stand looks the exact same"
It's not even in the game
And it's not like any AC game was more concerned with being historically accurate over rule of cool even if it was
And while the stand can be generic, it seems to be unique in market at least
Talking about the prhase I mean
Yeah the phrase being after the game I agree that it's not that big of a deal
AC: Shadows already had a copyright issue with their artbook
it's going to be actually really funny if it turns out AC Shadows as actually AC One Piece this whole time
I went to the website and it looked like the stand was used with all the one piece katanas
Like, I was doing medieval renactment in the period when the first AC dropped and making fun of this armor was my group favourite past time.
Games are fun but gear and other stuff is not meant to be realistic in those games.
Just feel plausible to someone that isn't especially deep in the weeds.
One of the comments mentioned the sword owner in the manga was sorme sort of buddhist
but, having never read one piece I don't know if that's true
The phrase have a relation with Buddhism, but it gets related with swords and katanas via Musashi Miyamoto
I see
So it's not really an unreasonable phrase to be written on any katana stand
Overall it's really worrying that the game is creating so many issues even before releasing
(I guess it is already being sold, technically)
OSP had a great breakdown of how, at least in AC2, the architecture was accurate and inaccurate in all the right ways and in a few cases even "better than accurate" when e.g. it showed a building under renovations which never really happened but allowed the game to effectively show the player both historical versions of that building
I feel like the architecure is the one thing they do pay a bit more attention to.
though apparently that's been going downhill since 3
Didn't they have a literal perfect model of Notra dam?
They really want to create the skyline of the city.
however its spelt
I heard their version of Notre Dame was so detailed and recent that it got consulted after some irl damage to the building? but I might be mixing that up with something else
that's what I heard
Oh also I found it so funny when some people found cars in AC: Shadows' concept art
I think it's because they took a photoscan of the building to recreate it for the game
To me it seems more like people are being silly
why? that's historically accurate.
No I mean the cars thing
I think Gen and Jay are still talking about the Shadows controversy
so do I.
personally I stopped caring about AC after AC3 / the 5th game and they've yet to show me a reason to start caring again
Some people are motivated to hate on it because they are racist and black protagonist, so they try to find absurd problem in it.
While the only problem that is really there is that it's a Ubisoft game and the monetisation is gonna be shit and the gameplay probably way too repetitive for the lenght of the game.
Like every other ubisoft game
This may be a very hot take but I find not all "I don't like that this game has a black protag" as racist.
And possibly the Katana, still curious to see if there are other explanations for that
It's literally racist
Like, "I don't like this game because of the race of the protagonist" has no other deifinition
I don't think it's a hot take, but rather an irrelevant one since in practice most of the "takes" don't come with enough nuance to separate straight-up racism from any legitimate reasoning
Because the whole context is "I don't like that this game intentionally chose a black protag over an asian because they thought it was better"
Which is why the game is pretty much universally being hated in Japan
Yeah, it's the story they wanted to tell, it's fine.
without knowing anything about the game's content I can't judge whether that would be better or not
It was fine with Nioh, it was fine in Shogun (the tv series), I see no reason why it's not fine in this one
oh this guy's inspired by a real African-Japanese samurai
that makes it really hard to argue against then
The logic behind it is that Nioh was from a Japanese company who already tried many Japan-based games and then wanted to make something new, but this one is from a western company that never tried east-asian setup and the first game they make they chose not to make an asian protag
(Well I guess the female protag is Japanese)
I mean it's possible that the japanese people are racist, many such cases.
I personally don't find it as being racist.
There was any controversy for Shugun?
which shogun
Tv series
the TV show
Another point of argument was that AC didn't really go for "real person protag"
But they chose to this one specific time
So some suspect that they made a black protag first and tried to justify it by setting him as "a real person"
Wasn't Shogun made by a bunch of Japanese actors, staff, and producers?
not that I'm aware of
Based off of a book written by a Japanese person?
I've heard, vaguely, that it was very historically accurate
Let me check
James Clavell wrote it
Because unlike William Adams, who is the protag of Shogun/Nioh and has a historical record of actually being admitted as a real samurai, Yasuke doesn't have such record
it is historical fiction but highly accurate insofar as what it's basing things on
Oh that's not quite Japanese is it lol
The author of the novel is James Clavell, australian
Creators of the TV series are Rachel Kondo and Justi Marks, both american.
no he's australian
Although it is an American series, the cast is mostly Japanese and the majority of the dialogue is in the Japanese language.
is how wiki puts it
Australia, South Japan, same thing
IDK the only historians I've seen opine on it, were pretty sure he was a samurai
hm, wiki says he "served as a samurai", no mention of controversy around that designation
What I'm saying is that he was closer to a servant than like, high up samurai
Nobunaga was impressed by Yasuke and asked Valignano to give him over. He gave him the Japanese name Yasuke, accepted him as attendant at his side and made him the first recorded foreigner to receive the title of samurai. Yasuke served as a kind of bodyguard to Nobunaga, was granted the honor of being his sword-bearer, and was occasionally allowed to share meals with the warlord, a privilege extended to few other vassals.
at a glance the citations seem pretty solid for this
Ok I have went a bit too far here I agree
But the thing is that there are too little record and none of them really supports Yasuke being more than...having a title of "samurai"
Like, there is at least enough of a record to at least make it plausible
If not probable
Is there hard confirmation? nah
But also in AC2 Leonardo Da Vinci was building you 007 gadgets so I feel like that for AC standard, it's like, waaaay more than enough
Overall it derailed a bit, yes it's not unreasonable to have a game with Yasuke as a protag
exactly how much of a samurai he really was is kind of a tangent anyway; a half-samurai protagonist is hardly a bad idea
But I absolutely understand Japanese people having issue with AC choosing specifically Yasuke for their first Japan-based game
if anything choosing a figure the historical records are sketchy on arguably is more suitable for historical fiction like AC
(In a non-racist manner)
they should make a historical fiction game about me where i get all the men and have huge muscles
play AC odyseey
Not wrong
Spartans and Leonidas
was Odyssey the one with that one tweet
?
As a matter of fact Japanese people rather consider Yasuke being a protag to be a racism over Asians
your gonna have to be more specifc
yeah it is
PFFFF

my man
It was the secret 13th labor

Back on AC japan i really do hope they do something more with the samurai than just make it a glorified "for honor" segment
Well Assassin is more closer to Ninja than Samurai anyway
I just came from a FFXIV area in which they tried to write a cowboy story and I had an overwhelming feeling that it was written by one of those japanese people that really really like cowboy culture,
It was one of the most painful experience I have had in a video game, so like, if anything if the developer is western you don't want them to try to write a fully japanese protagonist if you don't want to see accidental racism in my opinion.
That's...not really a great argument
fuck yeah i love cowboys
Blondie and all of the others
Tuco
Vancleef's character whose name i cannot for the life of me remmeber
John Wayne
Angel Eyes !
Joking aside, I do support this person writing cowboy stories, i just wished they did it in their fanfiction folder because it wasn't good.
But at any rate, if they feel like that protagnist was what they wanted to write, I feel like it's a lot better than demanding racial quota from videogame writers.
Weirdly enough that also always come up when it's black peole and never when the dude is white...must be a completely random happenstance.
Listen
there is no way it was worse than Disney's cowboy story
I watched Home on the Range.
I suffered
I kinda want to see that
I don't think Japanese people would have been happy if they chose a white person as Shadows' protag
The pope is literally saying he's gonna make me a saint over it
Also no I guarantee, the FFXIV bit is worse
my Blondie x Tuco fanfiction slowburn enemies to lovers to enemies to friends to lovers to enemies 300kw Good, Bad, and Ugly fanfiction will be written any day now
is it bad i thought you meant the hedgehog for a second

Sidenote: the Sonic 3 movie is this year so thats something
That's gonna be fun
Funnily enough, West mostly focuses on "the protag is black" while Japan more focuses on "the protag is not Japanese(Asian)"
That's why the pov for racism argument is significantly different
Like...I don't care about Sonic much, but I have a friend that is a huge fan and I largely live vicariously through his experiences of the movies.

One argues "Wow you mean you hate black people as protag" while one argues "So you don't want Asian man as a protag?"
I want what the writers think it's the best fit for the story they want to tell is really the only good answer
The Writers in AC already have it rough as it is
when will bloodborne come to pc
Right after Silksong realeases I'm afraid
but, there is a 2nd protag who is just asian, right?
Asian woman, yes
any day now
My current silksong guess is 2025
If it released within the year it would have been at Summer Game Fest
are you implying it would've been less controversial if the 2nd protagonist was an asian man?
No, I said asian man here
so I specified asian woman
but can you do it from your fridge?
They should have made asian man and black man, and make it a buddy cop kinda experience.
That would have had me buy a AC just to see what the hell was happening
No it's more like "If you are really fine with Asian protag and chose asian female protag, then why couldn't you just go asian male protag too"
I tell you, the buddy cop setup is really underused in video games
I think I'm just gonna drop it here
It gets more power due to the creative director saying "We chose Yasuke because it's a better choice for us to immerse with" in a now-editted interview
It's a good argument, it's also the argument for the dude in Shogun
And I would say Nioh but Nioh story is trash so it doesn't count
Rather than empathise tho, I would say specifically that having the protagnist being someone that is initially an outsider is a good move so that exposition doesn't feel as forced
And also they can act as a disrupting force to the status quo
It's a very popular setup as well
Nioh shouldn't be included here, I don't think it's for immersion in that game.
I am reminded of it, because I recently watched a FFX review and it's exactly the role Tidus take in that story
That story doesn't work if Tidus isn't a complete outside of that culture at the beginning of the story, which is really interesting
FFX is one game that every time I think about it, I find new reasons to appreciate
it kinda fits because he does get a lot of thing explained to him as a result of his outsider status but also nothing you get told is worth listening to
Because the story is bad
I don't think it's about being an outsider
It's more like "We're not Japanese, we can't empathise with Japanese people well, so we chose a black character which we can do better"
I mean...aren't they making the same arugment in reverse?
Which is most definitely not the case in Nioh
Also that's again ignoring the fact that they do have a japanese character, so if that was a problem they wont be able to write her right?
That is the issue
Isn't that just assuming that tho?
The creative director said that in the interview
Also if that was a problem, it would still be there if the protagonist was japanese (in fact it'd be worse)
So why is that the complaint
The creative director of the game said they chose Yasuke because of empathizing. But they also chose Japanese woman as a protag. So people were "wtf"
(They removed the exact line of the director saying that in the interview later on)
IDK, I get what you are saying, but I still feel like you are just giving me a bunch of reasons as to why people are being racist, than convincing me that they aren't being racist.
Ultimately the game isn't gonna be good, because it's an AC game and the story IMO isn't good since forever and the mechanics are barely passable.
I don't think it's gonna have anything to do with what people are being annoying about.
idk, maybe it's the difference in perspective, and that I may have a slight bias as I am an asian myself.
We'll see tho, it's still a while away, maybe it comes out and it's bad because they can't actually write an authentic feeling japanese story.
I'm sure many retrospectives will be written about this one
At least for me I can see that the setup of the game is not desirable for...us
I'm gonna say that the gameplay trailer looked better than Valhalla in my opinion, still not enough to bait me into buying an AC game, but it was something
They did trick me with Odyssey
I still find Odyssey to be the most fun. Least 'assassin'-y though

Shikanokonokonokokoshitantan~

trying Void Stranger again, ||B083 finally forced me to look up an answer, and it's kinda BS; even after being told what to do it "didn't work" at first||
most of their puzzles were fine, it's just this particular one relies on a mechanic you'd have no reason to suspect existed
like some of those later levels of Baba is You
||it's the one where apparently the only solution involves blocking one bull's line of sight with another bull||
Found it
I think you just need to figure out how to do the three-tile worm; it's something that took me stupidly long to realise how to do despite how simple it is
oh I've done that several times
it's useless on that specific puzzle since nearly everything is glass
||this chase sequence|| is fun at least
Love it when the game suddenly switches gears
metal gears
short-lived unfortunately, it's back to feeling like an endless grind
how many of these are there before some kind of structural change or bigger reward
Technically your first reward was within the first 25 levels
As for how many there are
Let me double check how many floors it takes to reach the most basic ending
are you talking about the trees, or something else that was supposed to happen to me and didn't
Your first important secret. And this game rewards every discovery
everyone keeps saying that...
I think it's 220 levels or so to reach the "bottom"
If you're Voided it might be sooner
Nope, the same, 224
do you remember how long that took for you
I'm not sure, first run was a mess and a bit of a blur, maybe a couple hours? I did get some of the rewards that make the game easier
The "puzzles" stop mattering and it's about exploring, which takes multiples runs
So the rewards become mandatory
steam says "3.3 hours" and I'm at 128
so I'm 90% convinced the game expects me to be breezing through these puzzles without ever getting stuck
or looking up half the answers
Yeah it's hard to evaluate
maybe I'll just have to switch to blindly following the walkthrough to get to the real game in a sane timeframe and give that a fair chance
There is no wrong way to play the game. Let me know if I can help or whatever
I don't think I'm anywhere near the part where "no wrong way to play" is applicable advice yet

79 people were in the steam dept while 181 were in the games dept
41 on hardware and 35 in admin
I mean yeah, is anyone surprised?
They barely make games
Of course they'd be smaller than ubisoft, that pumps out like 3 huge open world games a year
You know how many people you need to turn over that amount of art assets, music, code, etc
I think its more of a surprise they actually have quite a few people stil in there games dept compared to there steam
Well they have a lot of live services that they are mantaining, so only for that you need some people at least
you need bunch of people to pump out those CS:GO skins
If I had to guess the DOTA2 team is probably the bulk of it
And also there are 2 people somewhere under the floor, they throw them scraps sometimes, they are in charge of TF2 updates
cs2 is entirely covered by interns that come in once every couple months
the community makes skins and (most) maps, Valve only handpicks them
The community is in charge of so much of TF2's content that people were preparing to even continue and complete the TF2 comic, that is until we found out that surprisingly Valve is actually working on that already?
they ahve been "working" on it for a few years now tho
Yeah they've been working on it ''off and on'', but the script is finished and it's all being drawn at the moment
Want a fun Mario fact?
The Blue Toad and Yellow Toad actually have official names!
Blue is Buckenberry and Yellow is Alagold
that's not actually true, those names come from a flimsy at best source https://www.mariowiki.com/List_of_rumors_and_urban_legends#Bucken-Berry_and_Ala-Gold
There have been several rumors, misconceptions, and urban legends regarding production history, fictional details, and gameplay elements within the Super Mario franchise. This article is a list of the history of Super Mario rumors and details the extent to which they are true. Each section is supported by one or more references that detail the s...
did you know? L is real
That rumor was true tho
Yeah I got ahead of myself
Apparently it was the nicknames the dev team gave them and they soon found their way into the fans ears and hands
I donāt believe anything about mario games unless it comes from Supper Mario Broth
Gomenasorry, Nire-sama

On the topic of rumors
Apparently 343 will no longer be developing halos going forward only overseeing. After the failure of infinite
That and microsoft is apparently putting halo on the backburner for the time being
makes sense, halo has been on a bit of a downfall since reach
Lmao
8TB WD_Black SN850X NVME SSD w/ heatsink in stock at Western Digital Store ($899.99) https://t.co/9nXePN0eMO #ad
perfect for installing two Call of Duty games on PS5
LOL
Lol, f*ck off WD
Why are you posting ads?
eight terabytes, almost 1k... god
I hope prices keep improving I swear...
TIL 8 TB SN850X is a thing
but yeah, NAND prices have increased a lot since last year
that costing that much is wild lol
my 5tb external 3.0 drive was like 110 dollars
That's because that's an HDD so it cost less than an SSD
I bought a 12 TB hard drive for $140 Canadian. That was a steal.
i should probably get a 16tb external drive for my xbox one at some point
since thats like the max size the 2013 xbox one supports
I no longer have any HDDs in my house since 2022. van SSD life
In fairness. The whole two cod game line was pretty amusing

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Chivalry 2, Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration are free on Prime Gaming (Epic Games Store) https://t.co/uiclXhjYnJ
Prime membership trial: https://t.co/GKB9jeozqX
For free*
Why would I do that?
Because you always complain stuff is too expensive, and this is free~
Yeah but It's not even worth my time
Isn't the suicide squad game universally panned?
Pouring river water in your socks is free and nobody does that
well, it's not clear which of these games agent was referring to
Rise of the Tomb Raider is supposed to be good, right?
It sells for less than Amazon prime does
Oh apparently it's 6 dollars in some regions
As a product (live service, etc) yes. As a game I've heard it can be pretty fun
according to the lengthy video essay I watched on suicide squad, there's a few good mechanics, but the overall experience is mid at best, and only gets worse the more you play because of how painfully repetitive and same-y it is
Chivalry II is really fun
I heard 1 is good
I never played 1, but I've consistently enjoyed 2
If chivalry was so good where's my coat over the puddle?
I mean yeah but its free

You could always just claim it and let it rot in your library
we should start a trend!
From the review I've read about Suicide Squad.
The gameplay cycle is pretty bad, but people do praise the movment system very highly
Maybe if we are lucky, they'll use that in a single player game next
yeah, I also heard movement was the good part
If you want to play a game where the movement is good, might I suggest dance dance revolution?
@light gate
We could still see a Crash 5 someday, it just might not use the concepts made in the original pitch (or they'll be retooled).
Another leak
sci-s-s-s-scissorman
Running With Scissors confirmed to be developing the next Clock Tower game
as saddening as no crash 5, I am glad they were able to get something out, crash 4 is great and a completionist nightmare, I am still more saddened that they were not able to get Spyro 4 as their level designs in crash 4 and asset and world redesigning showed extremely creative promise to new designs in Spyro.
Kojima always has the best pictures https://x.com/hideo_kojima_en/status/1813354535131480453?s=46
who's in this picture?
from right to left: Hideo Kojima, Guillermo del Toro, Mike Flanagan, and some sort of creature
neat! seems to be having a good time
Ngl, I thought the middle guy was George R. R. Martin for a second
they look similar lol
