really depends on the gameplay, it seems like they're keeping the level design, who knows how it'll fit in a more modern game

graphically it looks great and they're keeping all the old voice lines

Gameplay looked like a blend of classic MGS3 with some MGSV mechanics, it looked a bit stiff and not as smooth and polished as MGSV but not as stiff as og MGS3

By stiff I mean, you can see how after rolling Snake doesn't smoothly transition into prone, he actually stands in place for a bit, then goes prone, the walking animation also looks very similar to the original MGS3 one, but they definitely are taking some cues from MGSV, so it looks like a blend of the two

Keeping the original voice lines was a great decision, I know a lot of people want remakes to have new stuff and sometimes be completely different, but I don't want new stuff to that degree, the script and direction of MGS3 is perfect as it is, doesn't need to be changed, I'm happy with that decision (cutscenes also look very 1:1 to the originals which is also good)

the concept of permanent damage is actually pretty straightforward to do, I assume you would modify the character's skin texture based on a set of stored events when the game loads. This process only needs to be done once, you don't need to do it every frame

many games do car damage this way when they modify textures to add scrap

even with mesh deformation, you can apply a similar concept. The main concern for an old console would be memory usage - if you had multiple characters each with their own permanent damage, that would be a problem. The PS2 only has 32 MB of RAM, even if some developers managed to make Black or Test Drive Unlimited run on that thing 🙂

(since each copy of the texture/mesh would need to be unique)

I'm not too interested in DA games because of the gameplay, but bad music choice for the trailer aside, I actually thought the Veilguard trailer looked fun and interesting. Guardians of the Galaxy similarities be damned, I love groups of quirky and quippy rogues and renegades coming together to save the world. I live for that shit.

People said that this trailer reminded them of D&D, and I cannot for the life of me figure out why that's a bad thing. It looks fun. Perhaps not my kind of fun because I'm not too big on real time with pause gameplay like the other DA games, but the characters and world look fun. And that's what matters to me.

This was my type of experience when I first started. Then I tried again a year later, by following a build guide and the "get OP early" guide - which doesn't make you like I AM A DEATH INCARNATE overpowered, but equals the playing field hugely for the starting area and just beyond.

When I did that (and following the guide let me learn how to use stats and stuff), I hugely enjoyed the game. It's worth a second try, though bosses will still remain hard

I was thinking the other day, if BG3 came out a few years prior if EA would have been persuaded of going the RPG direction with Dragon Age instead of continuing to the more arcade action direction

It's pretty much literally true that BG3 is in tone and in some mechanics a lot more closer to DA:O than any other recent game

Dark Souls is my favorite turn based RPG. There's no pausing but the game takes place in discrete frames

They aren't the same but also don't live too far apart

Turn-based combat takes longer, and can be planned out a lot more tactifully by letting you take your time and figure out your next move with no rush. Real-time-with-pause requires split-second "pause-play-pause" decision-making in the heat of battle, requiring you to analyze every action and plan ahead more for every single party member all at once.

I mean there is a big chance of fucking things up as when you unpause everything happens at once, it's more chaotic, but also you are planning carefull what you do

You can if you suddenly realize that the enemies are doing the same thing, countering your spells in real time with their own abilities, so you have to continuously pause and play over and over to make sure you actually have the right ability selected.

Turn-based doesn't have that. Each person on the screen takes a turn and lets you think more like a tactician, positioning each character as you please.

As I said, not the exact same thing but I would say very similar.
I'm sure there are people that hate turn combat but love real time with pause and vice versa, but in my experience they do scratch the same itch for similar type of players.

Normally Sinew has two four damage exert sides, which means he needs to rest for a turn after using them. The first item removes exert, making it a free 4 damage.
Sinew's left side has a useless 1 damage cleave chain left side, but the second item gets rid of that side and puts its keywords on the upper and lower sides

So now I have 4 damage cleave chain, which gives me 12 damage total, or 24 if I pair it with another cleave or chain
