Okay I want to share one more because this was funny and made my day. I'm playing Black. White played a King's Gambit. It lead to this unusual position. While they were pondering, I premoved Queen takes Bishop. I could feel that they were about to blunder it. Sure enough, they did and then resigned.

Honestly, the ability to play off of the original discs that you already own, not locking the game behind a subcription service (so being able to buy the old game outright instead, which Nintendo has done good for a lot of virtual console games, I played quite a few NES and NSES games on my 3DS and it was very convenient to do so), and also having a much wider variety of games to be able to play.

Original Xbox games are stupid on the new Xbox. You can play a very tiny selection of them if you put in the disc, which it will then just download the entire game anyway as a system update. It has the ability to emulate xbox games, and yet it is super restrictive.

It was one way of doing it, especially back then when the architectures were different. For PS1 to PS2, the PS2 used the PS1's CPU chip for one of the small tasks of the machine, I can't remember what exactly, but it was able to just run the PS1 game on that chip. For PS2 to PS3, they basically put a whole PS2 inside of the PS3, but that only lasted for the first generation of PS3 and wasn't even quite perfect. But that was back when the hardware wasn't too powerful and wouldn't be able to emulate the previous consoles. PS3 to PS4 had no backwards compatibility.

That is true as well. It took a long time for any 'current gen' console to become able to emulate. PS2 took a long time PS3 took a very long time. Only recently with the nintendo switch was it extremely fast, probably partly from ARM emulation on x86 already being a thing.

and that might be unique to the Switch being a particularly long-lived device, long enough to become "underpowered" by the time TotK came out

And the fact you could have a steam deck, and emulate Totk with a fair amount of ease, felt extremely illegal for a game that just came out. Emulators on PC should be used exclusively to play games from old outdated consoles in my opinion, not current gen consoles.

yep, "preservation" is the buzzword emulator projects want to emphasize since that's the kind of goal that doesn't get any companies mad at you (unless the company wants to do the preservation work themselves for once, in which case everyone wins anyway)

Preserving even Wii U game in my opinion is fine. It is no longer supported, and there are a lot of older games on there you might still want to play that didn't get any re-release. Maybe you want to play the multiplayer mode in ZombiU that was exempt from the PC version. The console is unsupported, not as available, and the game discs also aren't as easily available. Being locked out of an experience due to something being too old sucks.

But to 'preserve' nintendo switch games by letting you play them on a PC today when the games are still on store shelves is too far

yep, consensus in the modding/emulation/etc communities I've seen is that anything that's no longer being sold should be fair game, and I've yet to see anyone get in trouble for that

but when it's "just us", it's not (financially) worth the effort to do anything with their back catalogs, so they just let us quietly emulate everything and retain the rights to do remakes and stuff if things change

They can be done wrong technically, like with GTA, but that was a single exemption to that I feel.

I do think the larger system could be improved in one big way

if you don't update, remake, rerelease, etc your game in anyway for decades, imo it should just go public domain at some point

It becomes a bit weird with a game being released on PC though... My PC disc of gta san andreas still works on windows do this day. It has some issues with compatibility but mods fix those issues. But in any case, a PC platform rarely will go obsolete, unlike video game consoles. So then it is just a matter of being able to still buy the game.

Once you've punched a tree and have made a pickaxe, you can then mine some stone to create stone pickaxes, and from there you can mine iron to make iron pickaxes, and from there diamond, and so on.

But it's not just pickaxes you can make. You can also make swords, axes, shovels, and hoes (although hoes are very specific to farming or breaking leaves so you may want to stick with just iron for that).

But yeah, in general, most blocks will float, except for gravel and sand (but even then there's an exception for when sand and gravel are left floating because of world generation, which makes them unstable and hazardous because they can fall if disturbed).

Anvils and item stands can also fall if the block below them is broken.

Oh, concrete powder will fall too, but that is made by hand. And once converted to concrete, it'll float.

The size issue really depends on personal preference imo, and the best case scenario is if they make multiple sized hardware but I doubt they will really go for that.
If they have to choose only one size, I'd say it'd be wiser for them to go with relatively small size than making it too big. "This screen is too tiny" is more bearable than "I can't use this console portable"
