It's just so irritating
And I don't like feeling stressed that I'm not getting my money's worth when I don't feel like playing anything one month
Bingo yeah
Even things like FF14 which I can sorta get behind it just. . . argh
But these types of things? no excuse imo lol
"luckily" MMOs like that don't interest me in the first place
EA was goated back in the 2000s. These days, they're the very definition of greed, and both of those things right there shows it
lol that just reminded me how Apex has a 300 dollar deathbox skin
for their Final Fantasy collab
So was it confirmed that the million was a million copies and not a million dollars?
Oh my God, it was even higher than that. It was two million copies sold
I don't even know with these people anymore
Flitter's wallet in shambles
SAME
tho
I fear mod support is going to be sparse for a few months post-launch
not to mention what would happen to the StS1 mod scene
obviously i don't want StS2 to suck, the modding scene would be amazing on a new engine that could handle EVEN MORE MODS
NO I DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM I CAN UNINSTALL ANY TIME I WANT

148 mods
Holy shit, do they have money for art now?
I mean, StS is a BIG player in the roguelite deckbuilder
i started new DLC for Witcher and now I have to fight..... spiders
Vampires, strigas, devils, ghosts.. But please not spiders
EA denies rumor that a Dead Space 2 remake was in development before being cancelled:
"We don't normally comment on rumors but there is no validity to this story."
https://www.ign.com/articles/ea-shoots-down-dead-space-2-remake-rumors-no-validity-to-this-story
So it was cancelled but never in development?
You can't cancel something you never started
It sounds like they never planned to start
Yup just seen that
I'm standing in front of the cave trying to bring up courage, I can hear the sounds they're making
as good as the DS remake was, stopping at just the one is probably the right call; I think the survival horror remake trend already peaked with RE4 and DS, and any more are just going to come off as lame compared to "actually new" games
plus, can you imagine Gamers ™️ being super hyped for an RE five remake?
I would
tbf there are quite a few games that were eh on release but had good ideas and could plausibly be remade into something on par with the best in the series, like, I dunno, RE Zero and CV
but the hype and profit is definitely going to be lower for "average" consumers who are just vaguely aware of RE4 being a big deal and that's it
If rumors are to be believed. The next one maybe a code veronica remake
At least based on the title
Speaking of the dead space remake, I still have three codes to use on Origin
(in exchange for something on my steam wishlist
)
well, that one's so obvious that a "rumor" is guaranteed to exist whether or not there's any basis for it, so it's hardly worth mentioning
it's like saying there are rumors Half Life 3 might exist someday
You know what game really needs a remake/remaster?
Command and conquer 3
Goated game
which one is RE5
does Chris punch the boulder in that one
||this twisted game needs to be reset||
It wouldn’t surprise me, it also wouldn’t surprise me to see EA lying about it. None would surprise me after the absolute manure that they did on the Command and Conquer series.
Side note. Ea play is with game pass.
So if you want that just sub to game pass ultimate
And I am glad Total Biscuit didn’t get to see the absolute kerfuffle when they announced the first mobile (not the red alert spin off) C&C game. It would’ve destroyed his heart.
god
Rest in peace Total Biscuit.
Or the absolute filth that was the dungeon keeper mobile game
Well Dungeon Keeper only had two games, so yeah it was disappointing.
Its just the C&C situation was horrendous, it was like getting kneecapped and then spit on. After the dumpster for Generals 2 cancelation and Tiberian Twilight being terrible… it sucked just seeing mobile games.
Not to mention how a few EA employees leaked what originally was a new Tiberium FPS game to be accepted, only to get immediately canned when the reception of the trailer was good because it leaked.
It was so fucking weird seeing EA just… make the worst absolute decisions for a franchise that was so popular back then…
Eugh.
I don't know the sales numbers but the C&C remake/remaster or whatever that was that came out a few years ago was really well received
So you'd think they'd capitalize on that, but aparently not
Heck, there's an RTS revival coming, there's like 10 new RTS (not 4x or x-com or whatever some idiots say is rts, but ACTUAL rts games a la starcraft/C&C etc) coming out this/next year
The problem is that they want to make C&C a live service game.
They don’t want another shoot off.
And honestly, all of the ‘new rts’ games don’t look appealing at all. They focus so much more on the game mechanics than the actual universe they’re making. Like it just looks… idk… odd.
Like I tried Iron Harvest and so far it just feels like a clunky RTS with Commandos slapped in.
I guess I just want FMVs.
Idk
Yeah that one seems iffy, but I don't mean that one
Even if you don’t mean that one, I don’t think anyone will match the simplicity of C&C. Idk
Check Tempest Rising.
I did see it, does not look like my kind.
chances are StS 2 is made with Godot, since its studio is sponsoring its development and made communication about that last year
we don't know for sure though, no splash screen was shown 😦
It looks like Red Alert 3 but somehow more robotic industrial, with a serious color filter.
Its not appealing idk.
Yeah the filter i find a bit iffy, but I did play the demo. Some gripes/issues but overall it's the cloest I've played to something C&C-ish
Is Godot more like, moddable than Java?
like can i load 140+ mods without it eating 4gb of ram
It probably is Unity.
The ones that I know of: Tempest Rising, ZeroSpace, Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance, Fragile Existence, Industrial Annihilation, Dust Front, Homeworld 3, Godsworn, Sanctuary: Shattered Sun, Stormgate, D.O.R.F, Line War
Homeworld 3 seems like Homeworld 2 but with less Homeworld 2 looks.
The heck does that even mean.
It looks more Homeworld 1
Homeworld 1 aesthetic
But it has the mechanics of 2.
Which its okay I guess.
It had controls issues which made the demo reception rather negative, but they're changing that hence the release delay. They made a blog post a monthish ago outlining all the changes they're doing, and they look good
Dust Front is a classic RTS with elements of grand strategy, procedural world and non-linear campaign. The action takes place on a planet devastated by many wars and upheavals, where under a thick layer of soot and concrete buried remnants of humanity's former might. Army creation. Arsenal of tanks, aviation, infantry and vehicles of various pur...

This one seems unrelated to warhammer 😛 but I get what you mean
Personally i'm most interested in Sanctuary - since it's trying to recapture Supreme Commander as a playstyle
Like easy lore to follow, simple concepts, cool villains, nothing so crazy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhFYmYIY_DI pulled some of those names from here, though not all are what i'd call pure rts (some city builders) and from other articles i've seen
RTS or Real-Time Strategy has been home to iconic titles such as StarCraft, Age of Empires, and Command & Conquer. As we step into the gaming landscape of 2024, let's explore the exciting developments and upcoming releases that promise to redefine the RTS experience.

so since I never got into and know nothing about RTS... is this still true or did things change recently?
Genryu — 01/06/2024 11:46 PM
There is only one genre that can play the "players don't play our games, even if we make them" card and that's Real Time StrategyAll the others are coping
It's stil kinda true, mostly because no one has really attempted to make an rts game in years because the industry as a whole considered them "dead"
And then Microsoft made AOE 4 and that sold really well
Rts kinda got a resurge with that and indie studios
Yeah, this resurgence is very, very recent and I have no idea what really spawned it
Huh
It looks better
Other than AOE4 i can't really think of another RTS that came out recently - as in, an actual RTS a la C&C and starcraft, not other games that are labeled "strategy" but are 4x, or xcom strategy, or city builders
Closest to Red Alert, to the point of making me worried about EA lawyers
A bit too much graphics but…
Nah its legally distinct
Too legally distinct lmao
I guess its okay
Doesn’t have me screaming tho lol
Hmm. "They Are Billions" is kinda rts but doesn't quite fit - more of a base defense thing with rts aspirations. Dune: Spice Wars, but that doesn't seem to be pure RTS either

I think I’m starting to see the problems.
ANd it's from fucking 2015
I think the reason why none of these resonate is that they make building bases more sophisticated.
Like way more.
Like there are modules, features, and other things.
Sanctuary shattered dawn looks to be probably the most hopeful of a rts resurge
Given its basically supreme commander 3

Stormgate looks like a starcraft spin off
I should replay it
Well, yeah. Ex starcraft devs and all.
ZeroSpace also looks like a starcraft spinoff
But yeah. RTS is probably still my favorite genre so I am totally on board this resurgence
as the clueless outsider: what is a "pure RTS", if most of these aren't it?
Have you played C&C or Starcraft at all? Or age of empires?
I think I played Age of Mythology once and Star Trek: Armada once waaaay back in the 00's, and I had a phase of watching a lot of SC2 tournaments but that's it
SC2's a pure RTS. Basically, you have a base, units to get resources, build buildings to get better units/better buildings, and use that to defeat your enemy
Its probably my nostalgia goggles really affecting me, but idk how to describe 'pure rts' because that is different for every rts fan.
Some love overcomplicated rts games that make you do five hundred things at the same time, others prefer more simple rts games (like me) that you build a base and fight the enemy.
I think Dawn of War 1 was a pure RTS. Then it evolved into not being one, since it had that stupid... checkpoint capture thing?
Like Age of Empires has like four resources. Food, Wood, Rock, and Gold.
A pure RTS is basically an RTS without twists that change the genre up
It as in DoW 2 and 3 or whatever
C&C is like just tiberium, or gold if Red Alert.
Like Tooth and Tail
Tooth... and tail?
Age of Mythology would count, yes

I'm not sure what is happening on the trailer.
I really wish these Steam videos worked in embds
Ixrec: the "death of rts" is a popular enough genre on youtube too
One problem I see with them is the whole wanting to be an Esport, and the focus on APM
It wasn't really stupid, it was meant to discourage turtling. DoW II (I don't know about III) wasn't really an RTS at all, it was an RTT or tactical RPG more like.
Screw that, lemme turtle. Love doing that in supreme commander
Reminds me of this

Q2 2024
I always liked RTTs better anyway
Tooth and Tail is definitely for RTS fans and doesn't make a great intro to the genre because of how difficult it is (unless you play with friends of similar skill)
Ironically from what I recall turtling was kind of a bad strategy in principle because defenses were less cost-effective than offensive units (and both counted towards your unit cap...!)
I think for me my experience of AoM and ST:A left me with just a "that was fun I guess but I have no desire to play more" (and in retrospect, that's because I never understood what was going on well enough to do better than just a-move)
and then all of my RTS exposure after that was about multiplayer or the competitive scene which of course had no chance of ever being a thing I'd enjoy attempting
Yeah, the multiplayer aspect is very meeeeh
I think actually these days Starcraft 2 is free? Though I'd say play 1 first, for the story. SC1's still pretty fantastic story wise
My first exposure to RTSes was to the Age of Empires demo, which I played a lot of back in the day, and which not incidentally got me interested in the Hittites.

I never understood what was going on well enough to do better than just a-move
actually, expand that to every kind of strategy or management or RPG or game with a huge meta-game emphasis that I've ever attempted, even some action games with too many strategy/RPG elements
I've been playing RTS since C&C 1. I think I played dune 2 after that but that's when I started
Although I realized I liked the missions where you have a fixed army more (i.e., more RTT-type missions), and later on full-on grand strategy games when I wanted a more internal development-type focus.
I didn't play C&C properly for a loooooong time, and never really got into it.
(Somewhat the same way that I never played MoO2 until long after I had played a fair bit of MoO3 and didn't really care for it)
The only C&C I ever actually beat was Generals and the expansion, I think...
"A few years ago, another video said that the majority of RTS players wanted a campaign, while the companies focused in multiplayers games. The companies are more interested in catering to the vocal multiplayer competitive crowd than to the core RTS audience."
yeah, the closest I've come to liking any "strategy" game or "RPG" qua game is when they start approaching puzzle games, like Fire Emblem often does
that is where the money is
lol
See this is quite the opposite for me, I usually want the management and don't really care that much about the action elements.
(Although speaking of Supreme Commander I turtled a lot too
The SimCity runs deep in my blood...)
at some point different genres of games just click for different people
In Total Annihilation, my friends and I had a "rule" we'd do a times where no combat unit could be built... except the Krogoth.
Basically you turtled the entire game and tried to spam mecha godzillas
I have the most fun in the RTS genre when I'm winning with almost no challenge
So games that have an easy difficulty or aren't pure RTS are fun for me
i had no friends that played C&C
so I just pretended to have an enemy by killing my own units lol.

(see red alert 2, Mindustry)
Man, i remember total annihilation
I was actualy an absolute rat in Total Annihilation - I knew the "trick" to make the big bertha shoot like 50% further than normal
I played that in class in high school nearly every day in my junior year
so... perhaps this is a bias from the genres I do like, but isn't "it's only fun if it's easy" kind of a backhanded compliment? like saying the game stops being fun the moment it tries to have any depth or challenge, and is thus doomed to only stay fun until you get bored of doing the easy obvious thing?
Well if you like 'challenge' then you mean the absolute grind that is to quickly make units to protect your base because the other player will absolutely not rush to skip the 'challenge'.
No I just happen to have personal issues with the stress that comes from losing a high-speed, complex game
ah
In a game where I can pause and manage my emotions I do just fine
Most new rts's from what I see just add unique roadblocks from getting the best units, and while I understand they want to make the game 'more exciting', rts's are already fast and having to think 5x more about what this new upgrade does is annoying.
In an RTS I crumble like a house of cards
(that's why I prefer grand strategy games)
And honestly, its a reason why C&C3 / RA3 are my absolute limit. They're fun but its so annoying having to 'wait for the unit to be build' only for said unit not to be at their max potential.
Cuz 'oh you need to get the upgrade by building the fancy tech structure and then performing the upgrade in the tech structure building'.
like... bruh
That dates from warcraft 1/2 though?
I never liked Warcraft so.

Starcraft is also similar with this issue, I always try to set my mindset into 'I'm gonna finish a campaign' and then get tired and give up.
I always just go for campaings in RTS myself
Like gee I died because the enemy rushed me.
I coulda rushed too but I had to get these upgrades to make my units better.
Age of Empires doesn't have this issue mostly because you have to properly have an economy running, build defences and scouts, and then slowly make your army properly. You can rush but rushing is only ideal once your economy is stable.
Because rushing with a bad economy is the riskiest thing you could do in AoE.
you could win, but if the player has said upgrades...
AoE literally encourages slower plays, but people still try to rush them lmao.

How can I mod unity games to remove sound files?
First check if your game has a modding framework
^this. It'll make it a lot easier hopefully
If not, try BepinEx
If you have C# knowledge, decompile the game with DNSPY or something like it to remove references to that sound file
I'd assume just find the asset package and replace the sound file with an empty one. Sounds like the easiest way
Sure, if you can find it
A lot of unity games tend to put all their assets in one big file for each asset type
Makes it hard to edit without decompiling them
This ost is genius

The boss rolled "Kill the topmost character" on the very first turn
So I killed him on the very first turn.
Very fun build. https://i.imgur.com/fS6Jklt.png
This agent has Sushi, which gives his left side of the die two rerolls that are cantrip (you get them if you roll them, not if you use them), and Triple Shuriken, which gives all sides chain.
This means cantrip chains with itself to give me four rerolls one sixth of the time. This can easily allow me to get any side of the dice on all characters
Finally, the boss gives everyone one more pip, which meant the base power of reroll was three, giving me six rerolls each time

It's a lot of fun. Same genre as Slay the Spire

I heard good things from the remake, but poor things from the movie.
Which is a shame, because the movie could've been sooooooooo good.

https://fxtwitter.com/gamescom/status/1778794700419264798? @graceful bridge
Since the PS1 days and the OG Spyro 2, for me.

yes technically Dream Land is like, '92 or something but you know
i owned it
a better one would probably have been Pokemon Crystal

my brother played the Keen series a lot. I just watched. I didn't really play anything seriously until DooM.
This was my first game
I honestly can't really remember much between keen and C&C1 even though i'm sure i've played other ones
A coin op!??

My uncle took me to a nearby hot dog shop to play this brand new thing called "Pac Man". He had to lift me up to the controls.
Like this. My dad bought a Gateway computer back in the early 90s and that CD was on it
Did you win?
That's epic
Nope. I kept chasing the ghosts, not realizing I needed to eat the power pellets first.
This is kinda random but check out this cool chess board I saw at the ren fair.
Chocolate pieces
If you lose a piece you have to give it to the opponent so they can eat it
The black and white pawns look too similar but otherwise it lookes soooo cool
If you promote a piece then you eat the piece and make a new one to replace it
insert pac man dying noise here
@young creek check it out
my dad bought a Gateway 2000 386 DX-20 from their very first PC Magazine ad
"computers from IOWA?"
bowser singing peaches
He looks more eating out and less singing
Oh my
In terms of this, I've been playing since right in the middle of the PS2 era. I started playing in, at the earliest, 2003, with GTA 3 being one of my first if not my first ever game I remember playing. I don't remember much from that really early time in my life obviously, but I've always remembered that for some reason lol
Oh man, this reminds me. Does anybody remember the game Moto Racer?
God, that was a good game.

I loved GTA 3 it really made way for the 3D open world games back then
heh, I had a copy of GTA 2 that I kept hidden from my parents
Honestly GTA 2 was super fun. I need to find a clone and give it a go.
I didn't know what I was doing obviously. I would always run the streets in the game beating up NPCs lol
The classic top down gta’s were fun. just getting the highest wanted level and seeing how long you could survive for was great.
I wish EA would do something right for once and just bring back Burnout properly
Heck yeah! I went and beat that on ps1 last year for old times sakes. Loved that game
I think there was a remake some years ago but it did poorly
Nipples The Enchilada lol
One of the cards, I want for my extra deck still isn't in master duel yet. The only reason I could think its not is that most people don't use it.
Never doubt HC's Nep addiction
Ubisoft reportedly revoking The Crew from owners' libraries following server shutdown https://www.eurogamer.net/ubisoft-reportedly-revoking-the-crew-from-owners-libraries-following-server-shutdown
Yeah, I saw this last night. It's very shitty, and just another reason to avoid Ubisoft (and EA, solely because they're doing the same kind of shenanigans lately).
something something "getting gamers used to not owning games"
going for the ubisoft booty is officially legal

Back at it again, thieving fucktards? Good to see you pushing people to not buy anything you make, make it morally right to pirate your games, and rightfully shit on you for what's now sadly typical with AAA publishers. I'm scared for these dev teams. I really am
Honestly part of me is glad they're just straight up yoinking it from people's libraries. Makes it more apparent what they did with that game
This is legal.
But it shouldn’t.

The need to put an immediate damn Uno reversal on that somehow being legal
Its the EULA.
But yeah, its a huge reason why companies don’t want you to buy things but instead stream or ‘borrow’.
They can’t make more money.
This is why physical media is still a thing thankfully
I don't think it'd change anything in this case right?
The game isn't playable except online
Having a phisical copy wouldn't really allow to play it
That's fading away too.
I go back and forth how I feel about this.
It's more complicated than what it appears because what you do with exclusively multiplayer games once they are done is a hard question.
The obvious answer is "provide a way to play them peer to peer, or offline" but it's not always possible.
I wouldn't expect World of Warcraft, for example, to provide that once it shuts down.
In tha case you'd need to release a way for people ot host unofficial servers, for MMOs, which would be great, but also it does sound a lot of work to create that kind of thing whch I would be more than okay to place on big devs but would be a big burden for smaller devs.
There isn't an easy solution that I would like to impose on the big company that released a massively successful game and has the money to make it available past the shutdown date, that would also work for the small devs that tried something wacky, it failed, and now on top of having to absorb the cost of the their failure, they also have to pony up the money to make their game accessible to the twelve people that still play it.
with a lot of the small games I've played, the devs either released the server software directly with the game, or released the source for the servers when they shut down the official servers and then the community modded the game to use the unofficial servers
Would it be viable for bigger games
The game had an ‘offline’ mode.
Without any online players.
The Crew Unlimited: https://discord.com/invite/gUczTkphGE
The game's fate is in our hands.
Well boyos, we were finally hit with the news that The Crew is going to get killed on March 31st 2024, not even going to let it live a few more months to become 10 years old. People are absolutely rightfully outraged, and are demanding an offline mode. Ho...
Interestingly, some mobile games have been providing offline version when they shut down if the user requests; it is basically the game but without the gaming part
SimCity 2013 has an offline mode after the outrage
Ubisoft is basically testing the waters here and seeing if they can pull this off.
It had an offline mode but to my understanding you were still on their servers and still relied on them for a number of things
You just were on a private game
I didn't play it much so I might be misremembering stuff
To be clear I agree it's pretty shitty, I just don't know what would be a good regulation to solve the issue in a way that doesn't burden smaller devs
Removing it from libraries just seems to add fuel to that stop killing games campaign... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w70Xc9CStoE
Campaign video to stop games from being destroyed! It's being done in a few ways, owners of the game "The Crew" can help especially. There are more worldwide legal options brought up here on what we can do stop this than I think has ever been examined before. Also check out stopkillinggames.com for how to take action directly!
0:00 Backgroun...
Release the server hosting tools.
We had this a long time ago.
Sure, its gonna be hard for someone to host but at least it doesn’t become impossible.
Smaller devs can make the source code public at no cost to themselves after the game is taken down
(or they can simply not sell games and then take them away later)
Yeah.
Memoriapolis is a new city builder, that invites players to embark on a captivating journey through four ages (Antiquity, Middle Ages, Renaissance and Age of Englightenment).
Choose your culture, manage resources, face historical events, witness the organic evolution of your city, build "Wonders" and transform your humble explorer's camp into a...
yeah, the "burden on smaller devs" angle is only a thing if we require they do additional work to make it (more?) usable outside their servers; if the requirement is just "dump whatever you had on github" then it's not a big deal at all
I feel like it's the type of thing harder for larger devs/games
You can expect relatively small indie games do that, but you can't expect games like WoW, League, OW2, Valorant, etc. do that
it is, but it still shouldn't rise to the level of a "burden" at any size company
if it was a burden to know what that stuff even is, then it'd be a burden to release the game in the first place, which they already had to figure out
IDK maybe.
Or maybe even if it's somewhat of a burden, it'd be worth it for the sake of consumer protection and game preservation.
Still, worth thinking about it from the perspective of the devs IMO
agreed, that's why I don't think we want any kind of "the public/preservation/post-commercial version must 'work'" requirement, for any reasonable definition of 'work'
simply copy-pasting whatever they were running on their servers, even if it takes independent modding effort to do anything useful with, is the sweet spot imo
it's similar to how, at least from what little I've heard, GDPR compliance was never a significant technical burden (unless your systems were already a mess and causing other problems); most of the headache is in figuring out what the law means in concrete enough terms to act on
(I guess you could call the cookie banners a "UX burden"? maybe it was a bad example)
I could see problem with that as well, as someone who knows nothing of this, if you release a sequel, how similar your network architecture is to the previous game might be a problem for people intentioned to find exploits if the code is just out there maybe?
IDK at any rate, I do think it'd be a good compromise even with that in mind.
hm, I think that would be a non-issue in practice (unless their security was broken to begin with), but it does depend on the details of security features that I'm not an expert on
well, assuming we can word the legalese for "dump whatever was on your servers" in such a way that it doesn't include private keys and other secret values
or that you're allowed to swap the secret values for placeholders with no pretense of actual secrecy and then let whoever tries to use the open source stuff figure out what to do about it
I saw an ad at a shopping center today showing off the Nintendo switch as if it was new. 'TV mode, handheld mode, tabletop mode'. It makes me think when the next nintendo console is coming, the way it was advertised as if it was new and with mario kart 8 was interesting.
you ever have one of those days where you hear about an old game and realize you just have to play it again for some reason?
Whenever I hear beyond good and evil music, I wanna replay it
I've gone back to playing burnout 3 for ps3 again
I am still surprised how fucking good the graphics are for a ps2 game compared to others games.
So much detail and yet it runs at 60 fps. 60 fps was rare on the ps2. I don't think even killzone was 60 fps
Upscaled to 1080p on pcsx2 just shows how good the graphics are
Once you are at the F1 car it can have some fps drops though and you better hope your ps2 disc drive is up to speed
WE ARE THE LAZY GENERATION
Yes
You should play Burnout Paradise
Let's disagree to agree
i dunno, having to drive back to the start of an event when you lose is so annoying
and then you have to beat a lot of events again to rank up your licence... But I can say the same about Burnout 3...
I'm just nostalgia blind
I do need to try burnout paradise
Plus for that I don't believe I need to emulate even
Burnout 3 has some very good split screen multiplayer fun though
Yes, I recommended it specifically because it's more convenient than having to deal with an emulator
fair, fair
fucking EA.
they'd make bank if they remastered the Burnout trilogy.
but noooo, only remaster Paradise, the least good actualy playable Burnout.

i'd say "make a new one" but they'd fuck that up too
fill it with live service garbage and give it a battle pass or some shit
Burnout 3 is amazing to play handheld honestly
Beats every other mobile racing game on the play store and apple store
Need to kill some time? Do a quick race or crash into an intersection
Burnout 3 is the kind of game I wish mobile gaming was. Much better games.
I sorta wish there was a way to play this game in 120 fps for my 120 hz screen
120hz has ruined me. 60hz and 60 fps now feels sluggish to me and I always want 120 fps
You should play Ocarina of Time
It's got two out of three of those digits
(20FPS on a good day)
Pf yeah I know
I have played 007 on the N64 split screen with a friend and the constant 10 fps was killing me
But back then it was just normal
At least OoT on 3DS is much smoother

In 1971, three student teachers in Minneapolis, MN created a little computer game about westward expansion in the United States. Over 50 years later, The Oregon Trail series has sold more than 65 million copies and has been inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame. But the original creators never made a penny off the game. Learn the story...

I can't wait to check this out. It'll be what I watch while catching up on laundry
I was checking out Midtown Madness 2 again this week, a lot of progress was made by the modding community since I last tried it. HQ traffic models, projected shadows, longer draw distances and more
there's also an unused lens flare effect that is now exposed, and the Chicago port from MM1 seems to be much more stable now
cute ending
A FAQ for an indie game... highlight:
actually editing, to remove link to be safe (not that i see anything weird on it yet)
Oh yeah that website is a famous Japanese platform for selling porn games
What game is this?
Shadow of the Colossus
Which emulator did you go for?
Oh it doesn't look like itself
I was thinking I wanted to replay this
I've never done PS3 before and Retroarch doesn't have it so I tried RPCS3 and that worked almost immediately
Play the remaster
apparently PS4 emulation is not a thing, and when I tried PS2 I got so many graphical and audio glitches from PCSX2 that I quickly abandoned that option
plus people online were saying PS3's the best edition anyway since it's a straight fidelity upgrade from PS2
Not a thing yet
ofc
For PCSX2, the emulator generally sucks, and you have to go to every game's page on the emulator's wiki to find workarounds and specific settings where that game works
The remaster of Shadow of the Colossus simply doesn't hit the same
when people say remaster/make, are you talking about the PS4+5 version or the PS3 version?
Newest one
I guess it is more a remake than anything, the Bluepoint one
ok cool, that matches what I was hearing elsewhere
PS3 is basically just the original version but I'm guessing just upscaled? It's usually what most remasters tend to do especially at that time so not much change I'm guessing
yeah, this feels exactly the same from what little I remember
If that is the one on ps4 I can't right?
Will probably go for the PS3 one if it's the easiest to wrangle
Yeah
at least for me, plugging the PS3 rom into RPCS3 "just worked" (once I gave it both files, it's one of those roms)
so the fact that people seem to agree it's the best version is very convenient
RPCS3 even fully understood my gamepad as soon as I opened the config and changed "Keyboard" to "XInput"
Mind you the remake is technically really impressive, it's just that a lot of people me included kind of think some of that vibe and aesthetic got lost in translation and for this game that's extremely important so whenever possible the original is recommended the most
Speaking of SOTC this reminds me of one of my favourite youtube videos

Jacob Geller metioned
yeah, this part is just as good as we all remember it being
I'm still extremely impressed with the physics and mechanics of that game, extremely ambitious for the time
Plenty of games had done the whole climbing on something mechanic but SOTC is still the one game where I really felt how difficult it would be to even just hold on to something when it's moving around and trying to shake you off
being older now and far more conscious of all the subtext, it's so much clearer how these mechanics contribute to the colossi feel like living creatures genuinely trying to not get killed by you, far more so than the usual video game enemies
"come on, I already stabbed you five times, stay still so I can finish this"
"HOW ABOUT NO"
''I'm gonna shake even harder now''
Birb colossus is the best one
now that I'm replaying it, I think 5th / birb colossus sticks for two very specific reasons
- the first 4 colossi are all 2-4 legged grounded ones, where the puzzle is all about what part of it to start climbing on, so especially in 2005 going from those mechanics to "...it can fly???" was a
moment
I remember doing it on the PS2, thinking that this was an incredible technical achivment, that it felt and looked the way it did.
- it's the first colossus you have to actively antagonize before it'll even move in your general direction, much less attack you, so that's a big SUBTEXT DO YOU SPEAK IT moment
How fast and awesome it felt clinging on it while it flew is just 10/10
plus it threw me off once
...I think my horse is doing the pathfinding better than me
Celosia is still one of the few colossus I have really distinct memories of, I don't even remember if it's because I just liked it or if it gave me trouble at the time
I think I had to look up the solution to that one online back in the day
(I think a lot of people did, since the game never tells you that you have a "pick up" button)
I do like how it has a unique way to even start getting some damage in there because it's not as huge as the other colossus
i think someones remastering that with a version with the cut colossus
you mean, in addition to the remaster and the remake that already exist?
Kept you waiting huh? Even though I'm not a part of the Beyond the Forbidden Lands project, an old video of mine seemed to make a great number of people aware of it. So, they kept commenting on that video asking if the project was still being worked on. I didn't have anything to say on that matter... until now...
Patreon: https://www.patreon.co...
ah
ok, it's hard to beat birb, but electric eel's not bad either

I like this fight a lot though
The salamander
That's the other colossus I have distinct memories of
the arena salamander thingy
I like that one
I liked dirge and the fish
The first ever GBA emulator is now available in the App Store for iOS.
https://apps.apple.com/app/igba-gba-gbc-retro-emulator/id6482993626
No android?
which one is "dirge"?
They already existed on google play store
The other flying one.
You may have not gotten to it yet
oh the flying sand serpent?
Yes that one
Are there any you would recommend?
yeah that's one of the others I remember strongly, looking forward to it since I already know horse
is the opening move
9 down
I'm officially far enough into the game that I'm starting to wish I could fast travel between save points
from this angle they look like a giant house cat
It kind of looks like that when it attacks you with the murder mittens
its AI is definitely "playing with its food" in this first phase, it keeps knocking me down then walking away and waiting for me to get up again instead of actually trying to squish me
wouldn't it be funny if the colossus falling on top of you also killed you /s
(I don't think I was supposed to fight it in here, but that's where we ended up)
it is pretty funny to me how this one in particular feels more dangerous than the others
I wonder if it's because the size reminds me of animals that already exist that are that big and could totally kill you by just falling on top of you
it might be the only one that's as fast as we are
also, thank god they didn't try to make this game actually hard hard, or it would be an absolute slog
that too, it's like fighting a lion
the mechanic of having to pick up a piece of wood and light it on fire to make it afraid also makes it feel like you're fighting off a predator even more
I think by far the biggest challenges for me the first time around were any fights that required heavy movement
The one with the colossus in the sand is one I remember for giving me a lot of trouble just because it's inherently hard to focus on riding a horse while aiming a bow
(especially if you're playing on an emulator with only a keyboard)
you mean #10 (the "bullfight" sand snake in a little cave arena) or #13 (the enormous flying serpent in the wide open desert whose wings you have to climp up after a horse-yeet)?
makes sense, that's the only one so far where you really need Agro to be in full gallop while you turn around and aim
and then also turn her right after a hit
I think the idea is you have to just trust her to control herself for a while
WOOOOO GUYS LOOK
but now, where the heck is #12's entrance...
hell yeah brother
I will get to Nights if I feel masochistic enough. There are tougher levels.
it doesn't help that this is one of those games to do the whole ''the horse will sometimes just not obey you'' things
maybe the best insight I've ever heard into Team Ico's creative history is that the "NPC doesn't obey you because that makes them a real character" idea got stronger with every game they did, but SotC was the sweet spot for most people where it was only occasionally annoying
though I also enjoyed The Last Guardian a lot, it probably helped that I was primed to expect that "problem"
that or I'm just really good at that "use praise/scold at the right times and the animal sidekick becomes more consistent" gimmick
(Haunting Ground had that too and I recall no difficulty controlling Hewie)
Digimon world is the one game that did praise and scold right
Zelda does that too and it becomes really apparent when you compare how a late game horse controls vs a brand new one
well... most Zeldas with a horse have trouble giving you a reason to actually ride the horse
Though with Zelda I also had 'issues' with horses seemingly locking into paths on the road automatically without my input which is annoying
Even in BOTW which re introduced the mechanic of riding horses around already had the bike and in TOTK they just allowed you to construct your own car if you wanted so horses were extra ''useless''
oh I don't even think bikes and cars were the issue
it's fast travel, and tons of terrain horses can't scale but you can
every time I tried riding my horse anywhere in TotK I just had to park it and climb a rock after five minutes
that's why Agro works here: most of the open world you can't traverse in any way besides running, so riding her is actually beneficial, and the climbing bits that force you to dismount are always right next to a colossus arena
The only other two games where Epona is in is OOT and TP and in those you pretty much only ride around Hyrule Field which is completely flat so yeah for that it's really useful, funnily enough the sand seals were vastly more useful than horses
at least they aren't as useless as Skyrim horses
Once you get even just 50% of all the fast travel points there's just no point to actually riding your horse anywhere other than just RP purposes which is why I kept riding mine everywhere and even then that was a pain, they didn't even include the most useful addition in BOTW which was letting you teleport your horse to wherever you are with a special saddle which baffled me honestly
I don't use Epona in OoT
just sidehop everywhere
what is that
Fast forward is an emulator functionality that lets me play the game at higher speeds
Backwalking is the second fastest form of movement in OoT. Second to Epona
this was a jest btw i like riding horsies in Skyrim
In the version I play, bunny ears make link a lot faster
https://www.zeldaspeedruns.com/oot/generalknowledge/movement-speeds this is the vanilla speed for everything
isn't bunny ears Majora's Mask
It's both
Hmmmmm
I don’t trust it.
waow
Bunny ears in vanilla oot do nothing
The version I have mods them so they make you superfast
As fast as backwalking while going forward
what do you mean
Fast forward backwalk, not to be confused with fast forward backwalk.
In OoT they're just a mask you get from the happy mask shop and there's a quest to sell them to a guy
But putting them on doesn't do anything to you
strange
In OOT they just prevent an enemy type from spawning
Oh they do?
In Majora's it makes you run faster
It prevents the hyrule field enemies from spawning at night
They don’t have a developer website, it just redirects to the app page itself. The app wants your location and know data usage for some freaking reason? (Data usage meaning internet/cellular) Avoid.
And apparently it has ads.
Incredible
finally figured out #12
how many colussusssessss are there
16
waow
gonna take a break to do boring adulting stuff before I start on the last handful
16 in particular I think was very long
And originally there were gonna be so many more than just 16
I spent like two hours playing portal and eventually got sick of fiddling with the physics and stopped playing forever
I know they had unused colossus ideas, but did they ever want the total number to be much higher?
I got it for free so I can't get a refund on it
youve said this before and i still dont get it lol
It's simple
When I know the solution to a puzzle
I don't want to practice until I get it just right
I want to move on to the next puzzle
far from the first time one of us recommended a game and it just failed to work for the other person and no one has a clue why
I know very well why I don't like it
strange
I love puzzle games that don't have physics
Like Opus Magnum, Tangle Towers, Human Resource Machine
I like physics games that are not puzzles
Like World of Goo, or the one game where you set things on fire
I usually like physics puzzlers but the physics do need to be consistent enough that executing a puzzle solution is easier than solving the actual puzzle
which was never an issue for me in Portal
but World of Goo I found unplayable after the first 10 or so levels
im trying to think of other puzzle games i like
Yes the issue is I am way clumsier than I am dumb.
and I think you recommended Teslagrad? which I also had to drop what feels like halfway through when the puzzles just stopped operating consistently
i guess Zelda has puzzles but i wouldn't call those puzzle games
though the shrines in BotW and TotK do remind me of Portal
indeed, calling something a "puzzle game" is all about relative emphasis
Yeah I recommended Teslagrad for the music and atmosphere but I dropped it for the puzzles
Monument Valley would be a puzzle game for example
no, it's a first-person shooter
but HL2 did popularize the use of physics puzzles (and... physics weapons?) in shooters and other 3D genres
Source Engine my beloved
I have 304 games in my steam library marked as puzzle games
do you have Tetris
gravity gun is so fun to use omg
speaking of which I should play more Patrick's Parabox at some point
make it so
Escape Goat and Donut Country are two physics puzzle games that I liked
Goat Simulator
I don't have any Tetris games
I played my aunt's handheld Tetris console before she died of congenital illness
im sorry to hear that
It's okay, I don't miss her because I never knew her
I don't think I ever formally owned a Tetris game
but I did play a lot of Meteos back when that was a DS launch title, although no one remembers it any more
what is that
Super Mario 35 is not a Tetris
yeah but it was a battle royale like Tetris 99
basically a competitive match-3 game where the unique mechanic was that matching doesn't immediately clear your board, but instead turns the matched blocks into rockets pushing blocks out of your arena and into the opponent's arena (and more matches means more thrust, and blocks coming from the opponent might shove yours back down before they can fly away, etc)

Arcade games were wild and not enough people make new ones anymore
they still make arcade games but they're more like gambling for children
They make good ones too
My favorite modern arcadey games are Assault Android Cactus, Chippy, and Jamestown+
are we talking about actualy arcade games or games that are like old arcade games
The latter
woops
I think only modern actual arcade games I know are Japanese ones
I did go to a literal in-person arcade several times as a teenager, but they were basically all light gun games since that's what most of us couldn't play at home
I went to a lot of arcades as a child but I couldn't afford much so I often just watched the demo videos
By winning BAFTA Best Game Award, BG3 is the first game to win every GOTY award from BAFTA, DICE, GDC, GJA, TGA.
Until now, the closest were Zelda BOTW(2017, BAFTA went to What remains of Edith Finch?), God of War(2018, GJA went to Fortnite Battle Royal), and Elden Ring(2022, BAFTA went to Vampire Survivors)
Skyrim also won everything except BAFTA; It won DICE, GDC, TGA in 2011 and GJA in 2012. BAFTA went to Portal 2(2011) and Dishonored(2012)
let's goooo
...let's call that one a draw
I do love how every time you go splat, Agro's there within a minute if it's at all possible for her to reach you
yeah that's still one of the best ones
We need to STOP running DOOM on new things
and START putting new things into DOOM.
For example, today I added micro-transactions to the original game. Any time you pick up an item, the game freezes until you make a payment.
Bruh
finally

I'd buy the hell out of that
Hell yeah
Mario Party is great and all, but primarily because of the game itself, and not the Mario branding

yeah I saw that posted. I need to watch it sometime
Might be good to listen to at work sometime this week
Since FF4 made me mad I might go play LttP
A link to the past is a lot of fun
It is!
Flitter, do you know how long the Tower of Babil takes to clear whenever the Ninja joins your party?
And/or if you have to return to the Tower
Yes. It's a little bit long. You do not have to return to it
The end is interesting and fun, though
I will revisit it in the future
Honestly the music is kinda... not great for the area
So that part gets annoying too
I will say this though. Rydia is OP as hell with her summons
I think the English script is a little weak too
But I attribute that to a lack of polish due to it being 1990/1991
There's a romhack that fixes the script up a bit, I think
I imagine the remakes are much better in that regard
The pixel remaster is great
I intend to revisit the game in the future, either with a rom hack or one of the remakes
But I want to play it "as intended" as if it were 1991, at least for the first play through
I wasn't even around then so my first experience is the handheld remake
I'm weird when it comes to this for some reason
Anyway it is time to LttP while Denzy plays TotK
Have fun

it's very comfy
it also has one of my favourite areas in any game
there's just a guy chilling underneath the bridge to Hyrule Castle and he has this cozy little set up lol

I just finished Spiderman 2 on PS5, and the story was as good as I was expecting. I swear, Insomniac better never lose these games. They always make gems out of them. It makes me wonder if Spiderman 3 is gonna be next or if they're gonna do another spinoff like they had for Miles Morales. Only time will tell. For now, hella good game. I'd recommend it just for the story alone. Who doesn't like a good Marvel story? 8 out of 10
Huh. TIL that Final Fantasy 7 has a snowboarding section.
It's not by chance that it's where the Gold Saucer was first introduced in the franchise
I remember the snowboarding, which makes no sense considering how much game there is in that game to forget
i didn't know it was a recurring thing i thought it was exclusive to VII
the more you know
It's in the MMO, so not exactly recurring
Since the MMo takes things from other FF on purpose
oh yeah
But yeah
It's in at least one other place
Knowing how SE loves to milk FF7 it might be in other spinoffs and such
I started A Plague Tale: Innocence. Its pretty good
I started a while ago but didn't finish it yet
I got it free from the epic games store a while ago

The MSI Claw A1M is a mystery of a handheld gaming device: We can't figure out why they'd make it the way they did. Maybe there's Intel marketing fund involved, but either way, it's just not competitive at its $800 -- or even $700 -- price point against the competition. Compared...

it is really bad.
Never even heard of it
Yeah, I watched reviews of it when it first came out because I am really interested in these devices. Would have liked to see MSI make something more unique other then 'it has intel' and everything else be a copy. The big issue is just that it is a laptop intel CPU and its iGPU being classed as a gaming machine, when intel iGPUs aren't capable of gaming at all. I expected the performance of what thin and light laptops with an Intel iGPU has, and that is exactly what it is. Only thing I do like over the ROG Ally and Steam Deck is that it has 32 gb of ram, which can help for when you get ram limited, but those times aren't too often unless you are really trying to push what these things can do anyway.
Steam Deck or ROG Ally both aren't perfect, but they are up there with some of the best handhelds you can get for the price. I still hope things continue to improve.
At 6:28 in the video they're using the ROG Ally stand for this device, something funny I noticed
I feel like mentioning my experience running Cyberpunk on the ROG Ally since they do run it on the MSI Claw up there. It certainly is far from perfect, even great. Aiming for a 30 fps experience is probably the best for a clear looking experience with little FSR, going for 60 you have to make the game look a bit blurry but I much prefer it for that game. I even reach up to 120 with frame gen for the 120hz screen. Every now and then I have issues with sound cutting out for half a second, like the game froze for a tiny bit behind the frame generation, can be a bit annoying. The start screen also always has its sound delayed for some reason but that isn't a huge deal. Also the game can't run on the 'steam deck' quality preset, it crashes a lot for me. Maybe going down to 900p or 720p would have helped but I didn't, instead I had to change textures from high to medium, kept getting ram limited. Pretty sure the steam deck would have more free ram for games then the ROG Ally running windows.
Also the default graphics drivers on the ROG Ally are missing a lot of features, including AMD built in driver frame gen feature, so getting rid of the OEM drivers and just installing 780m drivers straight from AMD can get you more features.
I really hope the handheld market continues to improve, hopefully becoming something like laptops where it is more asking what price you want to pay then just what device should I get
Him talking about how fps doesn't really matter when you are out from home gaming is so true. If I'm sitting in my van killing an hour, I don't care much about the graphics or the fps, just that I am playing a game and it is playable.
Blasphemous dev reveals that Baldur's Gate 3 studio Larian quietly backed the game on Kickstarter for $1000 and never asked for anything in return. https://trib.al/4Qdikfr

it's kind of unbelievable the amount of good pr Larian has gotten since BG3
too good perhaps
I mean, I don't understand what that's supposed to mean
they just have good pr because their team seems to actually give a shit about what they're doing and the industry they're a part of through their actions and game
plus any company is gonna want to have good pr too
I assume they mean how the positivity around Larian and BG3 is often conspicuously overstated, in that way a lightning rod of hype tends to give expectations no real game could ever hope to live up to matter how legitimately great it is
a lot of it is obviously coming from dissatisfaction with the state of AAA gaming; it's been a long time since disgruntled gamers had such an obvious candidate to point at and say "look at them, you can have wild record-breaking success and not suck at the same time, you dinguses"

This video is not like other videos on my channel. It covers a secret, long buried by Nintendo, one that answers so many mysteries about Pikmin 3. It got a major update on April 1st
Welcome back you filthy boneraisers. Visual tweaks to improve visibility... - All player class sprites are now 1 pixel taller and a bit brighter (couldn't resist tweaking some a bit...

Volunteer MMO dev isn’t always easy, and we’ve had to make some hard decisions over the last twelve years, but here’s one of the hardest: to prolong the lifespan of LoE, the Europonia server will be closing April 30th. You can still play but need to connect to the American servers.

Hollow Knight: Silksong rated in Australia https://www.classification.gov.au/titles/hollow-knight-silksong
Yes, we know it's in development
I know but the rating means it’s close to releasing
Not always
When I am at home I will do a deep dive on the average, maximum and minimum time a game gets rated before they release in Australia
Like any normal person would
I like how almost every information is just "not specified"
Joking aside it probably means it's at least content complete
Can't rate the content if the content isn't there
Yeah I assume they sent it to every place to get rated at the same time
Yeah they are probably close to being ready unless anything happens
lol didn't even know but apparently this was already known like 10 days ago, and the rating was done in February
Give how strict Australia is with rating their games, I assume they are probably slower
It's probably more relevant in Aus because Team Cherry develops there
Korea is also extremely infamous for its unintetional upcoming-game leaking
Due to, well, also a very strict rating-requirement system
SMT5 Vengeance was also leaked due to it recieving Korean rating
What's the next big gaming thing? Summer Game Fest? Or we have a direct, TGA, Xbox showcase etc...before that?
I could see Geoff wanting that release date trailer really badly if it's actually coming
Nintendo already did their partnership showcase in Feb so I think that option is out
Ok here is my current expectation.
If we don't see a trailer by Summer Game Fest, it's probably not coming this year
Okay I need to know....Has anyone heard of the "Don't Escape" games?
Basically the opposite of an escape room puzzle
The closest major event is I think uhhh... Indie Live Expo in May 25?
Do you have any examples or can you explain the premise?
After that would be SGF, June 7

booo.
Okay uhhmm, I'll try and summarize them then
Okay. It's not actually a genre
No it's a series. Like I said, there are 4
You did not say it's a series before

Speaking of that game lol
$110 paywall btw

The game looks promising, but yeah, the prices fucking kill it on arrival. Another installment of Ubisoft fumbling the bag. Well, more so the greedy piece of shit suits up top that could give less of a fuck about us as long as they get money as usual. Like, okay, look, it would sting less maybe if the shit was like $90 max for everything, but $130? No, fuck off lol
the disrespect they are showing to Mr Hutt..
Jabba probably is the one who asked for those prices
Nobody should be giving Ubisoft any money right now, not while they're pulling the shit about stealing games from players.
That too. Forgot that they yoinked the OG Crew game from everyone
If anything, I just feel bad for the employees and devs that just wanna make some good shit. That's what scares me about the guys working on XDefiant. They're just under the wrong publishing umbrella
Seeing a bunch of posts about older fallout games reminded me of my most favorite piece of voice acting in anything ever
