@hasty patio its a card minigame. you have cards with four numbers for each side. on a 3x3 board, you and opponent take turns and you try to flip their cards to your color. who has more cards at the end wins. there are several rules thag change how you play; some cards have special symbol and can ascend or descend in number if rule allows it; sometimes you play in reverse where lower number wins, sometimes if the total on two or more sides match you flip over your opponent in a combo, etcetera. you collect cards thru variety of ways; playin multiplayer content for drops, battling npcs, winning tournaments so on so forth

Unironically we figured this out in Fallout 3, why did people have to completely destroy the sense of exploration and wonder for their games.

Already knowing what's there, is what makes ER so much less enjoyable the second time around, and most open world games outright tells you what's there.

Yeah, opening that trapped chest that teleports you to caelid with no way to immediately fast travel back made me feel that sense of excitement and immersion that I used to get from playing old RPGs as a small kid

haven't played ER, but this is reminding me of when I first played Tunic and found my way into both swamp and quarry way earlier than intended, realized that, and then decided to power through both areas regardless (up to the hard blockers anyway)

You could in theory survive the trap area, but you'd have to be sure to only aggro one of the hyperaggro mobs at a time, and be godlike at avoiding their homing attacks

you can go really far just with simple stuff. and I think that shows here. art doesn't have to be original. all art and design is inspired. you can get prefabbed assets, use game templates, etc. what matters most of all is if it plays well, and if it's ugly or not

When you build a furnace and start smelting ingots, and to do it a fire fox comes and start blowing into the forge you kind of go "that makes a whole lot of sense"
It makes me wonder why Gamefreak didn't do these kind of interactions before, they seem so obvious once you see them.
