speedrunners when they see this new strategy: Fnatic manager here, please delete
Wait holy shit you’re right.
You could in theory get to the red rails over on the top right. Probably just to skip over a lot of stuff.

I seen you talking about emulators earlier what one would you recommend?
Go to https://drinkag1.com/modernvintagegamer to get a FREE 1-year supply of Vitamin D3+K2 and 5 AG1 travel packs with your first purchase. Thanks to AG1 for sponsoring today's video!
Video game emulation in 2023 has gone from strength to strength and in today's episode we discuss the Best Emulators that I've been using in 2023 and showing off ...
The best emulator to use depends on which game you're trying to play
'old ps1 games' is a bit of a redundant phrase
Duckstation is the one I always hear as a go-to for PS1 emulation
RetroArch is another one I hear about but I don't know much about that and it sounds like it's more for people more experienced with emulation because of the amount of options
retroarch is basically a wrapper for multiple emulators
some indie devs are making modern games for old consoles, like Portal N64
emulators in RetroArch have a tendency to be outdated or have certain features disabled, so I suggest using standalone emulators
I used retroarch with mednafen to play silent hill and had good success
Which one do you use?
You know mednafen is legit because their site uses times new roman
It's not quite correct because the dodge timings and hitboxes are worse in this game than in a DS, so you tend to get hit more often, but the enemies tend to do less damage in the higher difficulty than they would in a soulslike normal difficulty, so it's close-ish
It's also kinda sekiro-ish given then parries and all that.
it ran great on my laptop, but mine is a relatively high end gaming laptop
people differ on what they call a "soulslike", but it is pretty common to point out that Fallen Order / Survivor have a lot of souls-y mechanics, and personally for me it's still the only game with souls-like combat mechanics that I enjoyed and those mechanics actually worked in practice the way everyone usually describes them
Yeah, Dark Souls is a good game but there are other turn based RPGs like it which are also good
it's the other way around, if you're experienced with emulators and/or like configuring them then the standalone emulators give you more control; RetroArch's whole purpose is being a unified UI around a huge collection of emulators which for me has provided by far the most streamlined and near-idiot-proof emulation experience I've ever had (even emulators I've used before standalone work better for me inside RA, it's insane)
it's just so nice having all my emulated games in a single place despite being on a dozen different consoles/emulators
and I'm the type that's usually fine using the default settings and just learning the default keybindings; little point configuring them when my next game's probably gonna be a totally different console/emulator anyway
although some of you would probably think I'm ridiculous for holding an xbox gamepad sideways to match the wii emulator keybindings
Making the exact same face he always makes.

As making the same game for 10+ years

I swear, his smile gives off some truly amazing "I'm dead inside" vibes.
Damn, already even 15+
Wonder what he was thinking about at that moment.
Is probably old hat for most of you, but I found this a neat explanation for the appeal of Skyrim (mainly because I never played it but still
): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_gT1X7Tpbg
Skyrim: The best open world ever made!
It's a giant sandbox full to the brim with dangerous foes and hilarious glitches! There's so much to explore! But there's more to it than that.
Let me tell you why i think Skyrim is the best open world game ever made.
*contains spoilers pertaining to the Thieves Guild quest line at 1:45
#skyrim
You haven’t played Skyrim Supermarine?
I have not. This sort of game is not exactly my cup of tea.
Ah right.
I haven't played it either. I'm not a fan of first-person action RPGs.
lots of us haven't played it
I've watched video essays on all of the Elder Scrollses, but they're all very clearly not my thing
What would you say is your faviourite. Genre of game GT?
They seem like someone who'd like Spyro
CRPG, like Baldur's Gate 3, Divinity: Original Sin 1 & 2, Wasteland 3, Pillars of Eternity, the Pathfinder games, etc.
A veeeeeeery close second would be JRPGs like Final Fantasy, Sea of Stars, Chrono Trigger/Cross, etc.
Oooooh you like wasteland 3
Well, I was using it as an example, I haven't played it yet, but I do like the setting and the combat.
Crystal Project?
Ah. It’s a good game you’ll enjoy it haven’t played it in a while but it’s a good game to play but on the hardest setting it’s
Haven't tried it yet
But I'll be getting to that one soon
hm, are you more into the modern crpg revival, or just listing those because more people would recognize the recent examples?
The latter, mostly.
There's a lot of other CRPGs that I play that most people won't recognize, like Geneforge and Avernum.
Although I suppose those would be more akin to tactical RPGs.
I haven't touched any Elder Scrolls game yet, nor Fallout
I am immune to the trend of jumping continuously to train acrobatics skill. 👀
They don't do that anymore
Have you played starfield?
no, I probably won't
i always thought he looked happy and smug
That sounds likr Duck Life
I present a question regarding definitions of game genres.
A roguelike is a roguelike because your character will die and you lose your progress & resources and have to start over from the beginning. Agreed?
(This is just setup for the actual question)
(And yes I’m excluding roguelites where you accumulate power based on some resources like your power level being retained upon death but the remainder of your resources being thrown away)
It also has to be randomly generated in some fashion to make each run unique
Fair, yes
But aside from that?
This is mostly based on an instinctive response to the question, so no need to overthink it too much
Well, I present a question: Death of the player character is the traditional explanation for the stat & resource reset, but is death specifically a requirement for this explanation for it to be a roguelike? Mechanically, all that happens is that your stats are reset, you lose your money & items, and you have to start with a new world from the beginning.
Death is just a convenient explanation for this reset. But is it required? If it is, then does that make it a different genre like an incremental genre of some sort, such as roguelite?
My take is that the cause of the reset is arbitrary; if it’s mechanically the same then it continues to be a roguelike. Any disagreements there?
RDR2 is pretty great.
its tickling my photographer neurons really hard, took like 50 pics already and im afraid ill spend a lot more time doing that
Heh, yeah, RDR2 is very much screenshot bait
im going crazy every moment feels like if i dont take a pic of ill miss out forever
the camera mode is so annoying though, like it has almost everything i want but not quite
and some that are there just confuse me cuz they arent called with the proper terms like aperture for example, its just blur strenght i think
rdr2 has the most 'alive' worlds I have ever played
it's one of the only games where I would feel bad murdering random npcs because they felt so real
the animals deaths got me fucked up in it
they feel way too real like no other game quite got them this well
Yeah, and the fact that you actually have to go through the motions of skinning animal instead of it just being a button to pick up
I love how everything in the game is done within the game world with very few menus and loading screens
even when youre not doing it willingly like in the beginning where you have to defend from the wolves,it felt sad doing it to them even when they were the ones attacking
I thought that was called diegetic design
btw, without spoilers, when is the moment when you get access to like the full open world n shit?
or chapter rather,im not sure what to call it
Ah, you may be right
i just started chapter 2 and im surprised how long it all was and i dont feel like im yet "indended" to explore or do anything outside story
Mid 2-3
skeuomorphic design is what apple had going on in like 2012
(or whenever ios 6 was a thing)
pre ios 7
iOS 1-5 or so
had an iPad 3 and iPhone 3GS back then
Noelle you can explore but if you haven’t been to an area you might get a wanted level on you
skeuomorphic design was something steve jobs really liked
after he died one of the his bigger proponents for the style was scott forstall, there's a story behind how he left due to ios 6 and how jony ive took on leadership to change how everything looked for ios 7
I concur
here's some stuff from wikipedia about it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Forstall#Departure_from_Apple
Scott James Forstall (born 1969) is an American software engineer, known for leading the original software development team for the iPhone and iPad. He is also a Broadway producer known for co-producing the Tony award-winning Fun Home and Eclipsed with Molly Forstall, his wife, among others. Having spent his career first at NeXT and then Apple, ...
Diegetic design is what I like to see.
apparently "the clock app used a design based on the trademarked Swiss railway clock, which Apple had failed to license, forcing Apple to pay Swiss railways a reported $21 million in compensation."
oof lmao
That was one of my bigger criticisms of cyberpunk 2077, in the gameplay demo, particularly in the ripperdoc scene, you can see that the player chooses upgrades from a monitor in the game itself
and then when it released, it was just another old menu after that initial scene
Yeah, they removed a bunch of it from the earlier builds, which saddened me
It is hard to get it right, but I think they were too cautious or just gave up on it too easily
game was incredibly rushed so it's not surprising
One of the best examples of diegetic design done well is Dead Space
the remake at least, dunno about the originals
game pretty much has ZERO menus or loading screens even
everything is in-game, in-context of the world
loading screen between levels? nope, it's a train ride
The original did the same
shops, inventory, other typical UI elements? Nope, it's an in-game holo UI
my favourite level design is in Doom Eternal where green lights in the environment show where you're supposed to go for the main path. of course it being Doom you can go out of your way to find secrets and such
healthbar, ammo counter? Part of your suit and gun, respectively
like it's so fucking awesome
I love it
And yeah, Dead Space is the contemporary example of diagetic design in video games and it being done well and with purpose
It's very well done.
It's not just there to look cool, it's part of the core mechanics; time doesn't stop
I played through dead space remake recently and enjoyed it thoroughly
left me wishing for dead space 2 remake
whats diagetic design?
yeah, absolutely, it's there to keep you in the world, to keep you on your toes, scared and feeling vulnerable
it's part of the overall design philosophy and it's very intentional
Where menus and interfaces are a part of the virtual world itself as opposed to being an out of world GUI
For example, in Red Dead Redemption 2, you go to shops and the item menus are physical catalogues in the game world
oh so basically design with the goal of maximising immersion?
like in dead space you can't just open your inventory or open a shop with enemies around. And you always feel vulnerable and paranoid because of it
and that's intentional
In Dead Space, your health is represented by a light on the hero's suit.
And all the menus are in-world holograms
Yep
Doom 3 did that
and I love that the game doesn't have a single loading screen
switching between levels is a train ride where you still have control over your character
ok getting dead space now lol
get the remake
of course
I just wish for dead space 2 and 3 remake
it's just that after playing re2 I learned that I am not good with horror lmao
I think it got a 10/10 from most reviewers
tbh I suck at horror as well but dead space isn't that bad about it
It was nominated for some awards at TGA and won one, I think
mainly because you can unload an entire magazine of ammo into the monster's face
and chop its limbs off
makes it a lot less scary
If we're talking strictly horror Dead Space leans into it way more than Resident Evil by far
I like that they added optional content warnings too
You can have the game warn you when there's disturbing content coming up
I didn't find the game to be particularly scary and I'm absolutely terrible with horror games
I think the fact that you can fight back and every enemy is killable makes it much less scary
unlike games like, idk, amnesia
Also some of the tropes it uses for the horror are kinda worn out and predictable
I couldn't get past the first monster in amnesia because I was too scared
oh yeah, true
though it was less true when the game first came out
That's entirely your opinion and that's fine, by that logic RE is the least scary game in the world too, what I'm saying is that Dead Space leans into horror a lot more than Resident Evil does
I'm not shitting my pants with either game, but if someone asked me if I recommended RE or Dead Space and they were in the mood for horror I'd say Dead Space
But yeah, I'm terrible with horror and I occasionally put Dead Space down, but DS isn't that bad. Half-Life Alyx freaks me out way more.
I generally don't like horror at all
never expected a half life game to be so scary
probably accentuated by the fact that its vr
true
i wanna try alyx even more now
Yeah, the VR is what does it
horror games in VR are like 100x more scary
Alyx is VERY MUCH WORTH PLAYING
All Half Life games have touches of horror in them
Like holy shit you have to
Doesn't make them horror games but they're still there
gonna see if i can yargh it without steam vr getting pissy again
What mission are you on?
Alyx demonstrates excellent VR design
what? i havent played alyx at all im just saying that now i have more reasonms to play it
I used to be scared of ravenholm in HL2 when I was smaller, but now it's my favorite level in the game because you can just fuck around with the physics engine
There are a few levels to play before it gets to horror
Oh I meant RDR2
I'm pretty certain that Alyx is still the best VR game to date
correct me if I'm wrong tho
probably, not a lot of competition to begin with
idk i just got to the camp site now taking some girls with a wagon
start of ch2
Remember to buy gun oil every so often.
It's probably one of the top three, yeah
what are the other 2?
Ravenholm in HL2 still freaks me out haha
ravenholm is so fun because you get to dismember zombies in the most fun ways
it's like a physics playground
Why are most video games too hard :/
it's tied for my favorite chapter along with the urban levels where you get to recruit resistance members in HL2 (it's fun when you have like an army of them and they battle it out with the combine)
What VR do you use Merc?
None. I don't have one
I used to have a quest 1, but it disappointed me so I sold it like 2 years ago
Did it not perform well?
quest 1 is ass but quest 2 onwards isreally good
It was not immersive enough for me
Too heavy, low FoV, annoying screendoor, meh tracking
Ah right.
quest 2 fixes all of that
Also had shit displays
I might get a valve index or somethin
Or like what's the best headset currently
prolly quest 3 tbh
The 512GB Goes for £620 here.
from what ive seen its amazing, and index i heard has major reliability and durability issues and also obviously youre tied to your pc,which isnt good for a laptop
in what world
Best headset currently is the big screen beyond afaik but I can't get that here
What can you currently get where you are Merc?
agreed, "death" is not only not required, it's purely a question of what flavor text and graphics one puts on top of the reset mechanic
there are already roguelites/likes in which the conceit is that it's a literal death, with you bring revived by supernatural means repeatedly, or where it's a time loop, or where it's actually a different person trying it every loop, or sometimes there's no conceit at all and you're just trying it again
Dark Souls
doesn't really fall into roguelite/like, but it does have an in-universe conceit for its own respawn mechanic yes
I know MA has a bad experience with it, but it seems pretty good overall, as long you use an aftermarket strap like BoboVR
Okay what I actually meant is that it's too overpriced for too little new features
As far as I know it only has a couple of incremental improvements over the quest 2 with a very inflated price tag and no game changing features to make up for it
Things like eye tracking which should be in a headset in this price range were simply not included
So there's no real reason to go for it over a quest 2 which can go as cheap as $300
Quest 3 is pretty good tbh
They just have durability problems and you probably shouldn’t use it for exercise because your sweat will kill it
i think its the linking step before massive improvements,as the industry establishes itself even more in the mainstream
Index is actually really durable in my experience
I’ve angrily thrown the thing and it didn’t care
ive heard a lot of people complain about the headstrap breaking and the controllers aswell
dont own it personally thoughy so idk,im a lowly quest 2 owner
The controllers have smacked me and other objects in the VR room at high velocity and are still working perfectly
The head strap is perfectly fine too
Index’s real problem is that it’s old now
I’d recommend waiting for an Index 2
Also probably an easier way to play older games on a handheld gaming pc
I say handheld gaming pc cause I didn't go with steam deck
Quest 3 is quite a bit better for standalone use, the SoC is a lot faster
AMD Z1 Extreme gaming
Man.. The boost clock of the Z1 extreme is 5.1... Just to think, 5.1 ghz 8 core on a fucking mobile device
If only the asus rog ally had a bit more ram. 32gb would feel great.
HOXXES Episode 2
If enjoyed this and you'd like to support my work, please consider buying me a coffee (I get through a lot of coffee)
https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/jcrispcgi
This is part 2 of a 5 part animated short, HOXXES, which is a a shot-for-shot remake of Syama Pedersen's ASTARTES, done with dwarves from DEEP ROCK GALACTIC
If you h...
Oh man, imagine a Deep Rock Galactic TV series...
I can see one-off episodes but not a series.
I'm playing Baldurs Gate 3
How about a 6-episode miniseries then?
I kinda see that.
That's absolutely true. Roguelikes are just games that follow a set of criteria.
The Berlin interpretation of roguelike is one attempt at deciding which criteria.
https://www.roguebasin.com/index.php/Berlin_Interpretation
Personally, I use the Berlin Interpretation loosely to figure out if a game feels like a roguelike or a roguelite to me. One surprising result of this is that the Binding of Isaac is a strong roguelike
Death is indeed not an essential part of permadeath. The game of losing your resources and using your newly acquired knowledge to get them back is the true meaning of permadeath in roguelikes
grid-based is one I hadn't thought of before
come to think of it FTL's ships are grids
FTL is a strong roguelike
it's even arguably "turn-based" in a weak ATB-like sense
The only strong criterion it violates is that it has a shop mode
and arguably how movement between encounters works
though that's probably the weakest of the strong criteria considering it already says "Violations to this are ADOM's overworld or Angand's and Crawl's shops."
and in FTL it's still possible to make a shop-like decision mid-combat, sometimes the enemy will offer to pay for a truce or something
Yeah. A lot of medical checklists have a heuristic similar to this one
Hades is a much clearer violation of "turn-based"
Where each criterion is assigned points and you add points up. If the points don't exceed a threshold, then it's not a roguelike but a roguelite
I count Hades as a roguelite because it has resource accumulation, no turns or a grid, limited complexity
Now keep in mind I don't particularly like roguelikes or roguelites more, but I am in the mood for one over the other at times
The most important part that distinguishes the two for me is "Can I finish the game starting from scratch if I know what to do?"
Never played
ah
Still waiting for a good sale
||it's a 22-minute time loop, and all the barriers are knowledge based, so "winning" the game consists of doing a bunch of oddly specific things in a single time loop to get somewhere you would've never known how to reach before exploring everywhere else in the game first, but it meets none of the Berlin criteria besides "exploration" in a vague sense and "permadeath" in the weakest possible sense that of course you won't solve it on loop one but there's nothing to lose; nothing's procedural, many puzzles have only one intended solution, no grids or turns, etc||
My impression is that it has few enemies, no grid, no taking your time unless you pause, multiple modes, a nonrandom environment
yep
it's the troll question because it meets the one criterion you just gave but arguably none of the Berlin ones
Conclusion: Not a roguelike. Narrative puzzle adventure
though I might be adding some randomness to the environment in my mod
That's always fun
randomizers with entrance randomization might be an interesting borderline case for "procedural generation"
for something like Minit it might as well be a roguelite at that point
for Outer Wilds I don't have nearly that much to rearrange so likely not, even if I finish every feature on the crazy ideas list
even in Hades, the sequence of rooms is random with partial player input, but you can never backtrack or anything like that
it does depend somewhat on what one is hoping to get from procedural generation
since Hades is all about the fast-paced combat, it fits that what's being randomized is mostly what you fight and the shape of the arena you fight it in
and the complex decision making is all about your combat build, not about whether you can afford to backtrack to a locked door now that you have the key for it or whatever
as much as I like the idea of a procedurally generated dungeon, in a more Zelda-like sense of "dungeon", I've yet to see a game where that appears to be paired with a core gameplay loop that I'd enjoy
Did you ever play The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth?
nope
It's got a lot of kruft but a solid classic Zelda inspiration
It is the game that launched the modern roguelike genre
oh yeah I'm well aware of that
I never actually said this out loud but I guess now I have to
BoI's aesthetic is extremely off-putting to me, a very rare case where that alone is enough I'd rather not play it
I believe FTL is the first roguelite I actually tried back when that genre was booming
It is kind of fucked up
If you're looking for serious recommendations on that, you could try to state your preference clearly to me
But now it's bedtime
not at this time, my backlogs are all stuffed as it is
for games, I'm most likely going to play the puzzle ones I bought last sale, then if I feel like starting something "bigger" over the holidays, depending on my mood probably either some Ace Attorneys or Alan Wake 2
I wanna play the Professor Layton Vs Phoenix Wright game one day. Say what you will with it's outta left field in world logic based ending, it's still a great game that I've watched countless people playthrough
is Super Mario Bros a roguelike
is Rogue a roguelike
sorry ignore the first one i thought of a funnier one almost immediately
''man this sucks I can't progress and I already looked everywhere!
''
the game: YOU'RE TAKING TOO LONG MAN
I love how I had such a big ''aha!'' moment right here where I opened up a shortcut to go to the second floor without needin the lightbulb and I was so giddy about it that I completely wrecked everything in my past and got blocked on the door while trying to do this
also, I just realized I recorded everything muted so all the beautiful music, ambiance and polish voice acting is gone!
This is really doing it for me though I loved every second of that and I really want the full game
what game?
Holstin!
It's just a demo for now, there's one demo that shows off the exploration and puzzle solving which is that one and there's another one that shows the combat that says it's sort of like a rogue like?
They're mostly to show off the mechanics though
I like that the first note you find even tells you this lol
but yeah it's really really damn good, pure survival horror style progression and puzzles and ambiance
That's a survival horror map if I've ever seen one!
Oh wow they even have a little google forms thing to directly ask players for feedback
that's neat
that feels like it's even the same shades of red and green I'm used to from REs
Kind of, it's very clearly going for that but honestly I don't really think how else you'd do it if it isn't red and green/blue/cyan for cleared/uncleared rooms
I like the big ol' zoom in with the spinning object the game does just like Silent Hill
it also has this weird pixelated aesthetic that tricks you into thinking ''is this pixel art?'' but no this is all 3D, all the objects and the doors have physics too so you can actually close them and destroy everything in the room if you bump into it
I'm also debating whether or not to make an entire channel for survival horror so I don't swarm this channel when I eventually get to the other demo, and it's not really worth it to make an entire channel dedicated to just Holstin
well, as one quick example: in randomizer trackers, the convention is a green square for "there's stuff here you can get", a red square for "you can't get this yet" and a dark gray square for "you already got everything here"
I think part of the reason these soft red/cyan colors are a good fit for games like RE is that, per the aesthetic they want, the map itself is typically meant to be brownish paper or parchment with black lines on it, so "dark gray means clear" doesn't work
I was just reminded that the original Animal Crossing game from the N64/GameCube has a limitation in its calendar where it can’t be played past the year 2030.
We only have a handful of years left where AC can be played legitimately
The internal clock can roll into 2031, but if you save and reload the game the date will be reset to 2030.
"AC calendar can only count up to 2030, that must mean that the world ends in 2030"
Maybe it could be modded? But that would likely require a decompilation.
can you not set the system clock back to 2000?
You can
ah, yeah I can't remember if any other survival horror games or just games that I've played do that but it does ring a bell
but yeah this is generally a pretty good way to do things, it's honestly one of the all time best features the RE remake added and RE2R also added icons for any items you already saw but didn't pick up which is amazing
So if you find the right date to start on, you can have the structure of the calendar match. But the year will be wrong.
But having the calendar match is probably the most important thing
I wonder if the game would crash after the epoch if you kept it running long enough
But more to the point: why is time passing
I’m so old
Aaaaa, so I’ve picked up playing Pokémon games again over the past couple months and they’re hitting the dopamine dispenser button just right
So happy with the BDSP remakes and the Let’s Go games
Rogue is like Rogue in every way
Oh, this makes so much sense now as to why indie devs rarely do it: https://youtube.com/shorts/qRQX9fgrI4s?si=7zutLdOSVvQijoVB

Not only that
Now you have to make sure the game runs on both ARM and regular Macs
Sometimes Rosetta can make it run anyway, but sometimes that's not enough
Just ignore regular mac
Honestly
Just do the m series
Other macbooks can run windows
Sure, they can, but people would like to use the operating system
It's also supporting 4 year old computers at this point, supporting intel macs
I feel like this is pretty misleading, because Windows and Linux are not so straight forward either. They have their own hoops as well.
Four year old is not really old
My computer is ten years old and I'd like to see it supported until I can afford a replacement
It doesn’t take much work to target both x86 and ARM Macs.
Xcode will by default target both simultaneously
And then now there's ios tripple a gaming
Resident evil village on ios is mostly the full thing. Max out graphics at 4k on an iphone 15 pro max and watch it crash hard
It will crash the servers
celestia forgive me for i am back on my bullshit (started yet another playthrough of fire emblem three houses)
goD DAMMIT BRINGI
ill play ff14 when i can! its just holidays are too busy to sit down in front of a laptop
... I'll allow it
this way i can hang with family in living room but play on switch since im not overly interested in most of the stuff the tv has to offer
n ya know it bein turn based means i can pause at any time i need to
Windows codesigning is a hellscape, but at least the entire process can be done without Windows
(though on Steam, codesigning is optional, as Steam will bypass any SmartScreen warnings)

🤨
Not the first time they've had ghostwire then, looking at my epic library
Oh awesome, Ghostwire looks awesome but I heards it's a bit slim on the gameplay department
Completely unrelated, I've been made aware that this game exists, which looks like a gender bent, Indian, Scott Pilgrim game, which seems to be a fighting, skating, cooking game...
This looks like complete nonsense and I kinda have to play this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXgktRWrHaI

Can Jala learn to love herself and heal the wounds of her past? Thirsty Suitors is a stylish, ...
Bit pricey for the moment but on a deeper sale this is something I'll 100% play
Is this just Catherine but less sexist?
Nevermind it's on gamepass, I'm playing this tonight
I wonder if this is different depending on your engine
I've never made any of my own projects for mac, simply never cared to
but I do notice Unreal has options for exporting to mac
If you were making a project in UE4/5 I assume the mac porting process is easier but again I have literally never tried
well as far as I know this person used to use Unity and now uses Godot? so the video makes it seem like those engines dont have easier mac porting options?
I kind of doubt it's as easy as clicking a button on Unreal personally
But maybe it's better, I have no idea
support for macOS ARM and Metal is pretty decent in UE and Unity if you use their latest versions
I see.
Godot has macOS ARM but no Metal yet, it uses MoltenVK to translate Vulkan to Metal which works OK but has some overhead

@uneven epoch Happy Ace Attorney Murder day
oh THATS the joke
"Ya filthy animal"
Today I learned that in Super Mario Bros, the mushroom kingdom citizens are turned into bricks (and other things)
Lmao
Which Mario goes ahead and breaks ruthlessly???
$5 for redfall
Mario, the genocidal maniac
Full english manual https://archive.org/details/NESManuals/Super Mario Bros. (World)/page/n4/mode/1up?view=theater
He's probably saving them, iirc the items you get from bricks are supposed to be items they give you as a gratitude and to cheer him up
Perfect
The Japanese manual does say that he saves them by breaking the bricks
The English manual says only Princess Toadstool can undo the spell
objection! the pictured gunshot was either the second or third shot, both of which happened on the boat after midnight, making it xmas! the first shot, which happened before midnight on xmas eve, is the one Pheonix is referring to here!
Hey you didn't have to spoil the game
its a 22 year old game
You're a 22 year old game
One day I'll finish that first run. Which route this time?
welp, good to know nothing has changed in the decades since that one time I actually tried to write something cross-platform
while every platform has its headaches, Mac was the only one I couldn't "just" build for and try out in a VM; even if you care about codesigning or whatever for Windows and Linux you can still build and run untrusted binaries on them without any paywalls or toolwalls, signing and stuff is fundamentally an optional feature you can always add later after you decide you need it
Mac was and apparently still is the only one of the three that you can't even try to produce a build for without first making the financial argument that it's worth spending money on... which of course for a game it just never is
Godot doesn't have official iOS simulator binaries for ARM because it's cross-compiled, and these binaries can't be cross-compiled yet
(x86 iOS simulator and iOS ARM binaries for physical devices can be cross-compiled)
damn
I was feeling myself here during this mission I even put my hood up and everything thinking I wasn't gonna get hit and the game really decided to hit me with a ''you're not that guy''
DMD doesn't play around
Beat Raft
What are you gonna play next?
I dunno, need another two player game
It Takes Two didn't grab our interest for long enough because it's a puzzle platformer
What genres?
remnant 2 is a two player game i've mostly seen going around lately
Who are you playing with?
MrsOnosa
Hmm, is she partial to vampires?
Remnant 2 looks fun but probably not what we're looking for. I might look into boulders gate 3. We never finished that other similar one though
I was actually about to suggest V-Rising
Building your vampire castle is pretty fun
Oh that looks kind of cool. Is it Diablo but with base building?
It's more of a Minecraft but vampires and isometric
valheim with vampires, if i recall what people were describing it as
The gameplay is more league of legends than diablo (even tho largely pve)
You can host a local game and multiply the amount of materials you get if you want to make it go along faster
Lots of customisations to your game
There is optional pvp mechanics to the game and it's really good for that, but the game 100% holds up as a fully pve game
Wargroove, Streets of Rogue, Spelunky 2, Unrailed, Tricky Towers, Ultimate Chicken Horse, Overcooked 2, Full Metal Furies, Broforce, Castle Crashers are all indie local co-op games that might be fun
Oh Tricky Tower is local versus. Not sure why I included it
Trine 2 has local coop IIRC?
These seem promising, thanks all
I think all the trines have local
Any particular genre?
No
Yeah we played that a lot! Very fun game
BG3 or the Divinity: OS games. Going Terraria blind with another player is also great. Could also take turns playing some more singleplayer-oriented games since you're in the same room, such as Ratchet & Clank, Spyro, Super Mario, Zelda, etc.
Yeah BG3 sounds really fun but that's a huge financial commitment, haha. That's one thing I liked about vrising. Pretty cheap
Does it have to be local coop? If you have two computers, right now Monster Hunter World is dirt cheap and it's pretty good to play with two people
Oh have you not seen our setup? It's dope
Important facts!
Path of Exile might also be an option. It's free to play, so easy to just try and see if it's of interest.
Oh, play Screencheat

That's a lot of screen
golden deer yet again. best house best house

There's only one route that even gets the real story and it's not GD 😔
..... GD are literally the only ones that fight the actual big bad
claude n them deers off to murder CEO of racism 🎶
The entire plot of the game revolves around Edelgard's war on the church and only one route actually gets the other half of the story and the choice for which side of that war they want to be on
The fact that the BE route splits into 2 routes while Deer and Lion are linear shows that
i...
i mean if i didn't main WAR i'd probably main DRK... but also FUCK YOU
ignore my RPR
well i meant in the way of "cool anime lady off to wage war against a church (iceheart vibes much?)" but sure she also has a big fucking axe
.. I shall accept this and take back my "fuck you"
also i read that as "edgelord" and not "Edelgard"
nah thats dimitri
he and his stupid ass too brooding to do my fucking support chains until like last two chapters DIMITRI WHY-
destroys your entire religious conspiracy
CAN YOU STOP BEING RACIST NOW?
since you know
Xaela were killed for being mistaken for dragonkin in Ishgard
I look forward to when I finally reach 3H and can participate in these jokes
but I've only just finished part 1 of Radiant Dawn
fighting game player who labs horizontally

Venom's badass theme from Spiderman 64 where you fight him in the alley-way. Enjoy!
Never in a million years did I think I'd find out through a random youtube comment that 'Flock Off' uses the same sample from Venom's theme
Which makes me wonder how many samples do PS1-PS2 games share?
I already found out a little while ago about all the exact same textures used throughout plenty games that were all taken from the same texture pack CD thing, I think it was mostly Nintendo games that used those, now I wonder if the same applies for soundtrack
Guess what I've been playing in my down time.

haven’t played DMC but it is using the sound of my childhood and I approve
there’s a particular bit of music that’s in f

Dload link (btw, I stopped using this channel on 18/05/2012): http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/1322
I don't recognize what you're referring to because I never actually played either of these two, I only played the first Spidey game, but that only reinforces my idea that there has to definitely be some shared library of music samples that these devs used for sure
Silent Hill also uses some samples from what I remember too
Oh man, the soundtrack of DMC but specifically DMC1 is fantastic, it's so varied and diverse
This is a fan video. No copyright infringement intended. Enjoy

Another classic Nintendo series returns to Switch - and this time it's the Game Boy Advance classics, Advance Wars 1+2. The gameplay truly shines on this one, but unfortunately the tech and the visuals underwhelm. Tom Morgan delivers his review.

Can anyone clear up which companions in BG3 are monogamous vs polyamorous? Googling it gives pretty scrambled answers.
I don't think that anyone knows for certain, really. The only one I'm pretty sure is correct is that Karlach is poly.
I asked this in a few discords and got completely conflicting answers, including on Karlach
Yooo, @grim stirrup is playing Crystal Project. If you have any questions about the game, do let me know. It's a game that's big and confusing, and very exploration driven.
You might get stuck at times. Not looking things up can be better to do for this game. I can offer spoiler-free tips.
i will find the use for my squirrels
Oh, how many squirrels do you have?
Here are two principles about the game:
1- You'll often get more key items than you need. This makes it so you don't have to explore everywhere to get quests done.
2- In most cases, if you see an interactable, you can reach it with your current movement abilities.
Now if you want hints on the squirrels, here they are in ascending order of spoilers:
1- ||You only need to redeem three.||
2-||You can redeem them in Spawning Meadows where you found them.||
3- Location: ||It's to the north or northeast of the point you started the game, under a tree. A purple person is standing there.||
||i shall go and search for my deliveree then||
4th squirrel acquired
Dont staple it
big scary spider dead and blue mage scholar acquired
this feels like it shouldn't have been my second boss
i found ||gran|| and died pretty instantly on the way but
There's a way to beat that one long before you have the stats
i'm guessing using || reverse polarity?||
You're so smart
||i have no idea where i'd be able to pick it up atm though||
wait no, those things that ran away
This is a game where most difficult enemies have a trick to them, making every fight possible without leveling up even at hard difficulty if you know what to do
are blue mage spells person specific or global unlocks?
Person specific. You can spend 25 LP to make the character learn abilities they see even though they're not a scholar, but it's hardly worth it
You also get a piece of equipment that lets you do that without spending the LP
I think a scholar can teach other scholars by using the ability, so you only need one person to learn things
(I fucking grinded the 25 points to get everyone the ability and I regret it)
i shall learn from your mistakes
Here's how learning works:
1- Enemies give a fixed amount of LP, making it time efficient to grind enemies that are easy to kill (but you won't get much EXP or gold.)
2- When a scholar earns a point, everyone else gets 10% of a point in scholar, and so on.
3- You get a small learning boost for the first few points in each job.
Don't forget that you can reduce grinding through assist options. They don't disable any achievements or bonuses
i'm tempted by the 3 home points and maybe max level later but i'll play more first
The three home points thing is basically mandatory for time saving
The max level thing destroys game balance. The endgame fights are tightly tuned to be just hard enough at the level cap on hard difficulty.
What you might want is the custom difficulty thing that allows you to switch from hard to medium and back again
wait, i was considering it so i can get all skills but they're not linked in the game
Oh yeah, learning points are not tied to levels.
Levels give you raw stats only, and the amount of each stat is based on the class you are.
Later you will be able to respec which class gets how many levels
ye, i prob dont care about that then
Nire: Automata!!
I got it for Christmas on my switch

Did that get an update recently? I saw the last one in... september or so
oh so there was 😮
ye, a big update at that
you can replace your melee and grenade, there's a new biome, a new wave arena where you get better rewards for clearing waves without taking a hit
I got into it a few months ago with my fiancée, she eventually got bored of the lack of island variety, and now she doesn't want to play the update
Interesting how Ixrec is playing AA for a while
I've been also playing it recently
Although I am fond of AA3 so I am currently playing AA3 (in the trilogy)
Ace Attorney is a scam. Phoenix's sexuality is hardly ever discussed in the series
LASER CANNONS LETS GOOOOOOOOO
Curse the localization team
does the jp version address it?
Eat your hamburgers, Apollo
speaking of which, I just finished ep 3, so I'm gonna try switching it to Japanese and see if my law vocab (or rather, the subset fiction uses) is up to snuff
No the title is not Ace
I'm playing in Japanese, it tends to use not-too-hard vocabs in general
It is a series for casuals anyway.
yeah, that's what I would've guessed
Basically if a word is too hard to understand, they either explain it to you or they don't even expect you to know it
it is going to take a while to get used to the guy's name not being Phoenix Wright
I do respect the English localization team for how they tried so hard to convey all the stupidity that is AA names
"Mr. Sahwit" was great
man, all the names are completely different
I didn't realize how much was localized
They chose to change every single name so that they can make the wordplays work
right now the weirdest one for me is Mitsurugi, because for whatever reason I most often encounter that name and similar names for heroines, but it's Edgeworth
Edgeworth makes for a cute girl
Gags and goofs about videogames and the things that happen in them.
which AA game was that again
Pretty much all of them
oh, I haven't noticed it yet
It's less pronounced in the first game, since they just call it the city
i got the black hole ability
can't wait to see how that changes loot
also gonna see if the RPG pairs well with it
suck and blow, I call it!
"Your name was... Yappari-kun, right?"
"No, I'm Naruhodo!"
this is so hard to take seriously
doing about 6-7 of the Cyberpunk 2077 carjacking missions, getting a discount as a reward each time.... feels good to buy the 300k $ car for 12000
Playing games really made for keyboard and mouse on this thing is weird
oh that's the word for "autopsy"
What is it?
kaibou
Oh!
I am not surprised.
that dpad also looks sus to be honest
There are "bouken" and "kaibou", both are used as essentially the same meaning in Japanese; in Korea we use the former for autopsy and latter for anatomy
I think in Japanese bouken is rarely used and only means autopsy, while kaibou is more generally used, meaning both autopsy and anatomy
was there a recent reason for the lower reviews? or is it people bandwagoning for the meme or something?
Going by recent reviews seems a lot dissatisfied christmas sale buyers.
I'm going to play Siege for the first time today
But as for context. Seems about the same as the other reveiws
ah, that's a shame. there's plenty of footage of the game out there already, i guess p eople don't check it when it's on sale
I think it's because sometimes when youre in a town you really don't know where shops are
Yeah. Personally i think its just mediocre
When the creation kit is out for it and more mods are made it will probably become better
shrug I haven't played enough to really have much of an opinion on it. The discourse surrounding the game kinda killed my motivation to play it.
I played yesterday and I wasn't sure where to go but shooting was cool
BG3 made people alot more critical of rpgs i noticed
I played it yesterday and was difficult but very cool
I very recommend it makes you feel like you can do whatever you want
And something else but I can't tell you
You are a bit too young to meet the age rating for Baldur's Gate 3
But you don't have to do some stuff it's a normal game
Correct
Intro is bad a little but you can watch bits
I very much enjoyed Starfield but I understand the negative reception. It makes me sad, though, because it means there may not be another game like it.
I think there will be more because of this game and No Man's Sky
You picked two negatively reviewed games, though
It's difficult in Starfield to see what weapon is better I used pen and paper yesterday
Siege is negative reviews too?
No Man's sky flopped hard on release remember?
it promised the universed and delivered a puddle.
I know this but now it's good
it's better now, but it took years
er... it takes time to see all R6S has to offer, please don't rush to review it.
When looking at any weapon, it compares it to your currently equipped weapon. So, when deciding between the two, it should be simple so long as they are of similar builds. It would be hard to compare a laser weapon to one that shoots projectiles, though.
Starfield is not a bad game, but the few things it does badly are really noticeable and in your face, and it's a long game so it's easy to sour on it throught the game as a result.
Yes this is good and they have powers too
True, true
I like Starfield but I am very easily distracted I'm sure there is some kind of story
weapon modding is very fun for me so I spent a lot of time comparing weapons
I played other games with bad inventory and annoying carrying capacity systems, but when you have to wrangle those for 80 hours it gets to be a bit...much
I don't get what someone is saying to me my mom says and games sometimes show that too but not all games but Hifi Rush had a super super cool story
Weapon modding I liked a lot
Rainbow Operation Staff training
Especially the fact that you could turn semi automatic weapons into full auto and vice versa, it really allowed a lot of customisation
I sometimes think I should do it
I kind of hate that so much stuff is locked behind perks tho
They should 100% made it so your crew perks counted as if you had them
You walk with someone?
You generally have a comparion that follows you around, but you can also crew a ship
yeah, the perks locking some seemingly basic stuff behind it was a bit weird.
They can be a little annoying but I quite like the companions
Like, in my head my character isn't a pilot, but I had to take the pilot perk to use more advanced ships
It would have been great if the game gave me an option to hire a pilot instead and rationalise that, the reason I could fly more advanced ship, was that the pilot in my crew was doing the flying. or acting as a co-pilot to help me through it
except that one chick I professed my love to
Can't use mouse and keyboard in Siege on console
she suuucks
I chose a chef and then it turned out food heals you tiny tiny tiny bit
I can't mod for a one more year 🤭🤭
Didn't feel worth it to open the inventory to use them

Someone managed to compile the leaked gta 5 source code and get it playable on pc
Also via source code. Because of gta online they canned Agent, Bully 2, and around 8 or so story dlcs
Some of these dlcs were converted to gta online stuff but it still sucks
But if you can play it online you can right?
If you dont count the pay 2 win aspect and hackers loitering the lobbies technically
But now that the source code is out. Hackers are gonna have a field day making new hacks and even malware for it

Maybe it's not true
This was from the hack where they just sentenced the hacker to life in hospital or whatever until hes deemed he wont likely hack again
If true it at least is a better reason why it didn’t happen then just “gta online profits”
Still mad about RD2 though
why are you still mad about rd2?
yeah i've played gta online a lot(i also play story mode) and indeed they can hack your ip and crash your game
rockstar seems to be taking a lot of l's these days.
Is GTA 6 going to be good?
It was just announced. That's impossible to know.
Now THIS IS POD RACING
Good game
I know
Czernobóg means Black god in polish
I'm aware~
This pfp is my favorite in the entire server
given that much of the original members left, i think it won't be as good as previous games. but how good it will be is up in the air rn.
really? thanks.
i also hate what they did to rdr2 online
hmm that's really cool. i did not know that.
I imagine every time you have typed a sentence here, you are actually the irl heavy and have your minigun revved up for everything you have posted
haha that'd be funny af.
i just really like heavy, he's funny and has so much charm.
also, rdr2 is a fantastic game. story is great and its the game that made me no longer hate bill williamson and feel bad for him.
and its gameplay is decent.
hell, a cool fact, in the game, i named my horse, twilight sparkle.
i named my horse in the epilogue rainbow dash and i missed my twilight horse very much since by that point it likely was dead.
I think it's somewhere and has adventures
perhaps yeah.
I think I want Xbox Wireless Headset
Oh it happened again
Do you think people who work there are angry
If it turns out there is actual employee info in it? Yeah probably
Whoa
Okay, this is getting out of hand now. Something needs to be done for better protection. These people's whole lives are literally being put at risk because some assholes wanted it that way
I mean, whatever can be done is really just better security from the gaming companies
It is already illegal to hack stuff
Pretty much everywhere
I feel large-scale hacks were a lot more common back in the day, and the fallout was felt for much longer
remember the PSN hack in March 2011? Online play and the PS store were unavailable for an entire week
this would not fly today, for various reasons
so I would say overall security has improved a lot
man that week felt a lot longer than a week to my kid brain
I largely didn't bother at the time, I didn't play online on a console much and only bought physical games
PS3 Reportedly Still Has Millions of Monthly Active Users
https://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2023/12/26/ps3-monthly-active-users-report/
I would assume so
Backwards compatibility is main thing keeping that alive
I don't think people would just throw away their old consoles
I'm sure a lot of games from that time still have somewhat active playerbases if the servers aren't down
If small yeah
Currently i just use the ps3 emulator since finding a console in good shape is a pain
My series x is essentially just a retrostation at this point
I still play mine sometimes.
I know older COD/BF games definitely still have dedicated playerbases still
So I'm not surprised to hear people still play on their ps3s
They do
Especially battlefield 3
I don't know how xbox is like with their older consoles and playerbases there but I seem to remember xbox does have generally more retro compatibility but I could be wrong
I'm not a console person
They are shutting down the 360 store next year
Ah well
great dialogue
Study finds playing Super Mario Odyssey cuts depression symptoms by nearly 50% https://gonintendo.com/contents/30328-study-finds-playing-super-mario-odyssey-cuts-depression-symptoms-by-nearly-50
also got x8 studs on Lego Star Wars lets GO
I recall seeing this with another Mario game with PTSD
Yeah, that was Super Mario World I believe
It’s a general phenomenon that video games help with psychological distress
I'm playing Sims
My Sim is now maximum in cooking career🌟🌟
which one?
Cooking
sims game i mean
4
Now I should do the life goal in cooking like the difficult things
Where you have to invite people
ah. bigger fan of 3 personally, but do have fun
3 was very cool you could buy places
But in 4 they can do many things at once it's super cool
Four is free these days so we tried it out. Pretty addicting!
i just like the open worldness of 3
Yeah, me too
3 was a technical marvel
you just need a few mods easily available today n it runs fairly smootly
so even the at the time fair complaint of the game struggling to run is ironed over
I enjoyed the simulation in 2 the most
And one was funny because you can kick flamingos 🦩
im not too big of a fan of the sims games, but had gotten 4 a while ago purely to make a character in it lol
Is that your humansona?
Cute
alright, it was cheap enough since there's a sale going on right now
let's see what this is all about
oh yeah thats a thing lol
it is one of the finest modern pixel art brawlers out there, would play it if I had people to play it in coop
no
why
Because hes out in space killing demons?
When and how are we meant to form a friendship?
no, I only befriend heroes of good FPSes
hides
ok would you be friends with Doomguy then
yes
would you be friends with this guy lol
no
''hmmmm, I dunno, it looks cool but I wonder how much stuff I can actually do''
game: say less
the fact that I'm not familiar or really good at beat-em-ups makes me wish this had a training mode
it does have this little ''here's how the game works'' thing but I really just want that controlled enviroment to let me lab and figure out how all these mechanics come together and work
but maybe that's my DMC/fighting games brain speaking, I don't really think training modes are a thing in these games
It is in Fight N’ Rage
DescriptionFight’N Rage is a brand new old-school side-scroller beat’em up. I keep getting hit all the time but I'm kinda getting the hang of it now
April stop! He's already dead!
I can't see anything about it, nor a mod that would add a training area
Oh yo, the guy who made this is from my country
don't let your fellow game developers use capsules for character collision detection
random gaming thing i just remembered
