a 999 damage one handed weapon with a unique weight
because I wasn't already a genocidal maniac already
Nice. Yeah I love that game. Probably my favorite soundtrack of anything ever
regarding MGS Ground Zeroes, I find it surprising how good casually moving around in that game feels. It's very weighty but still responsive enough, I don't think I've quite played another game like it
even GTA V (which I thought was a good benchmark for a game of similar era) feels much more artificial in comparison. I assume RDR2 has improved on that front, I haven't played it yet
you can tell it's made by the same studio as Death Stranding, I guess
it holds up nicely visually too, the wet effects are pretty well-done for a 8 year old game
mgsv is 8 years old
It still looks like it could be released today
To think mgr revengeance only released 2 years prior
Oh yeah the engine is gorgeous and a work of art
And yeah! Snake definitely feels like he has more weight to him, which is why I mentioned how moving around in GZ feels more deliberate than TPP where Snake is much faster and more agile so you usually don't have issues with movement
Snake is a fucking unit of a man so he should feel like he's got some weight behind him (literally
)
That's not even the most impressive feat
he literally lifted up a metal gear with his own hands in Peace Walker
That right there is why you're the best Boss, the one and only!
raiden yeeted a Metal Gear Ray
Yeah but Raiden was a cyborg by that time and it was no big deal, he even took on multiple RAYS even as a human before
which was impressive by itself
this is pure human Snake turning an oversized AI controlled battle tank into his PB on overhead press
you can tell he means business, I mean just look at this man
Kaz: Snake, this is a sneaking mission
Snake: Blow up the base, leave no survivors, got it.
I like that this game is when the whole franchise went from Tactical Espionage Action to Tactical Espionage Operations
hi ean just look at this man, I mdad
when you don't care about inventory size limits
at that point it just becomes impractical
The funny part is, that's the battle armor which gives you more inventory slots for ammo and stuff
i feel like this is going over my head
Tara Strong voices a character
I like how I recognized all the memes I saw online over the years one by one
they played us like a DAMN fiddle!!!

💢
C'mon, start talking bitch!!
that was the start of Punished Kaz
a man denied his hamburger empire
robin's acting was great in both games
no shotguns will be added
heh, following the Counter-Strike meta I guess
Gonna experiment with some N64 emulation again. What's the current gold standard?
the article writing though…
or just kind of annoying enemies with what might as well be blasts of hot air—I was never a fan of TF2's take on the weapon, for example
if you think TF2 shotguns are bad, it's often because you don't use them as intended
they can be very, very useful if used correctly, even if an alternative weapon like the pyro's flare gun is more meta
(plus, the tilt factor :))
it's a bit like the spy's revolver, I regularly get more kills with it than the knife in a game
always fun surprising people with it as engineer for finishing off what my sentry started, it gets so many kills
Project 64 still
Alrighty
it's the "good enough" option, but do not fray into the emulation scene with that opinion 🙂
yeah, the engineer's shotgun isn't great but it's sufficient
Is there a better one?
there are options that I find situationally better, but overall worse
ares is more accurate but this limits your options in enhancements and modding, and it requires a beefy PC
Well I don't take modding into account
simple64 is also more accurate, less demanding but has limited modding (no overclocking for instance)
TF2's default shotgun is the goat
I value accuracy over mods
^
if you know how to do jukes (after learning how to trickstab) and have decent aim, you can go hard with it
ares recently reached 90% of playable N64 games, including an accurate way to defeat copy protection methods from OoT, Rare games, etc
I have a few clips just going absolutely ham with the widowmaker
Barring some exceptions like getting Pokémon Stadium to talk with GB save files
Does it have transfer pak support?
timing is also pretty accurate, the attract demos of games like GoldenEye play at their intended speed
This sounds promising, do you have a link handy?
That's what I meant, thanks
My only criteria for emulation are accuracy, the ability to upscale native renderer and run at a solid framerate. I'm just wholly disinterested in mods and such.
personally, I use Project64 "by default" and 1964GEPD for GoldenEye and Perfect Dark (a modified version of 1964 with special tweaks for mouselook)
Never heard of Ares before
as a general rule, if I'm playing a retro game, I want as accurate as possible internal game mechanics (like, weapons do the right amount of damage, enemy AI behavior is correct, character movement speed and acceleration is correct) -- and then anything that I'd consider interface, UI, QoL stuff I absolutely want improvements. (One spot people might find controversial is I consider vertical freelook in original DooM to be a QoL improvement rather than a fundamental internal game mechanic, but I wouldn't want it if I was doing competitive multi.)
1964GEPD is based on a version from… 2002, and it runs beautifully in 2023. However, its game compatibility is very low and it's full of inaccuracies – but it has been tweaked to give a great experience in those 2 games
(the graphics plugin is much newer than 2002, don't worry)
heh, I know people who have the exact opposite opinion
I'm honestly not very satisfied with P64
It always felt janky and prone to inaccuracies
my issue with Project 64 is the shady official download (fine for me, not for beginners) and the lack of native Linux support (runs well in WINE though)
there's also the nag screen but it's a minor issue
I've been detached from the emulation scene for a decade, so I'm not well privy to the bleeding edge. Back in 2013 PJ64 was the state of the art for N64 emulation and I've simply never heard of anyhting else coming close. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
ares, simple64, etc are pretty new
new options have also appeared for GB/GBC and GBA emulation last year, such as NanoBoyAdvance (which is cycle-accurate IIRC)
For GB I use the Super Gameboy ROM on BSNES
heck, a new 3DS emulator is being developed as we speak (Panda3DS – and it's actually available for download, unlike Mikage)

Well I just have an Analogue Pocket, so accuracy is perfectly solved for me.
I always value accuracy over anything else which is why I love BSNES
Let me know when it hits emuDeck.
interest in Citra has also increased lately, a huge progress report landed this week. It can run the 3DS home now
Even its composite filter looks convincing and not shit
since I started doing emulation in 2019 for the humble PS1, it's shocking how much things have progressed in exactly 4 years. (I'm not even using the same PS1 emulator as I did initially, thanks to DuckStation)
I do appreciate that EmuDeck has at least given me access to the current state of the art without making me do any work setting them up
I just don't know offhand what N64 emulator it uses, just assumed it was PJ64 but it could be Mupen or whatever it's called
Except the WiiU emulator, which still requires manually fiddling with settings in desktop mode before it'll work correctly. You'd think they would've fixed that.
https://ares-emu.net/about they have an interesting history and are related to BSNES and higan
Definitely gonna check them out later
all roads lead to Near (😢)
the aformentioned Citra progress report, by the way: https://citra-emu.org/entry/citra-progress-report-2023-q2/
Doesn’t it feel like it was just yesterday when Citra released its first progress report in years? It certainly was exciting, finally reaching a point of having tangible progress and being able to share it with everyone! As we said in the previous progress report, Citra is alive and well, and as a result, we have even more Citra improvements to ...
Vulkan backend is progressing and is now usable on macOS via MoltenVK
I've used Citra to play Metroid 2 and it worked great in my experience with it
I'll probably use it again when I play Link Between Worlds
Ares is a brutally accurate emulator, get your best cpu ready.
Time to put my i9-13900K to the test
IGN has a nice hadline banner today haha

Wtf
Wasn't active recently for long and now that's crap
This is actually old news
They said this years ago
They only delete accounts with no games
Oh wait, they made a new comment changing that policy, apparently?
I think they gave a generic answer on how to stop the account closure.
I believe a lot of companies have a somewhat similar policy but none of them see to act on it.
There's also been a lot of debate this year on how long a company should keep accounts, data and such.
Yeah, looks like their policy is four years.
Ultimately, they should be made to delete inactive accounts and recreate them when the person comes back using receipts or accounting history

Yep
since Descent is almost 30 years old now, we've had players building skill upon skill upon skill. On occasion someone will show up who used to be out near the right end of the curve and they'll be shocked, shocked that they're not the best player in the world and that they get beat by people they used to crush, until they realize that all the things they were doing to be great in 1997 or 2001 or whatever, people built on that. Some people think that's awesome, and some people really can't handle it. And some people resort to that kind of excessive trash-talk about being slightly more skilled than others.
TF2 is one of those games that literally just cannot die. Valve hit the jackpot when they made it.

I've been playing a fair amount of TF2 again lately and it's impressive how well the gameplay has aged
Everything about TF2 is not only timeless but very ahead of its time
Even the visuals which you may think is crazy but the models are incredibly expressive for 2007
Before this year’s movie, before Bob Hoskins, before the Super Show, Mario got his first true adaptation outside of games on a children’s music record. I tracked down the musicians behind it to uncover a pioneering piece of Mario’s lost history. https://t.co/f6hiu0dfQV

a really interesting read
i didn't even know this existed !
I run TF2 with the "Ultra" Mastercomfig (which further increases model/texture LOD compared to the in-game high settings), it looks quite good indeed
ngl, I got scared shitless when I saw that, cus I didn't realize this was fall guys and was like "why does pac-man look like that? wait did he eat someone!?"
also those ghosts are uncanny as hell to me
I just won two more duels in the current festival event, and I've only been using a loaner deck.
@mossy flume MIDNIGHT!
I don't know if you saw this, but the developer for that Rock Raiders remaster posted an update video a few months ago, and in it he's talking about plans to make an expansion campaign that continues the story after the original campaign is completed, with (most likely) all new levels and possibly even completely new features!

We've seen the discussion around inactive accounts and want to clarify that players will not lose access to purchased games or DLC due to inactivity, whether on PC or console:
PC Players:
A Ubisoft account will not be closed if tied to an activated PC game, no matter where it…
It hurts to give Ubisoft credit, but it seems like it was a non-issue the whole time.
Yeah. It should definitely have been clarified in that first tweet.
But still good on ubisoft for addressing it

Now whens family guy getting added
Fornite has been cursed for a while
well yeah but this makes it even more cursed lol
than it was already
as more and more collabs happen, it will get more cursed over time
especially now that this collab happened, it will lead to Simpsons, king of the hill, etc
family guy also has even more of a chance of happening now as well
we need an mlp collab in fortnite
TRUE
No.
mane six as backbling pets
that sit in like a chair on your back
i would actually love to run around as goku/indiana jones/spiderman/bender/optimus prime/doctor who/etc with rainbow dash on their back
I wanna play as rainbow dash
as skins, theyd have to do the equestria girls versions

so theyd likely just end up as pet backblings if a collab was to happen
maybe elements of harmony gun wraps as well
It would have to be egs
Cant imagine getting a horse to use a gun wouldnt look weird in animating
could maybe do both the characters themselves as pets, and then later down the line have the EQG versions
maybe for an anniversary thing or something
that would not make them anywhere near enough to be worth
it would pretty much come down to whether hasbro would agree or not
which given their 5+ year deal with epic, its somewhat possible
We all know gen 5 is gonna get some equivalent to this lol
We gotta sell that money
izzy as a pet on your character's back would be pretty cool too
- Equestria Girls wasn't profitable enough
- G4 is dead
- Even if 1 and 2 weren't true, I don't think Hasbro would associate their super family friendly property with a fucking battle royale even in a cosmetic sense.
transformers
ye a lot of "cute" brands dont wanna touch anything with guns
transformers is a series about a LITERAL WAR
with two enemy sides KILLING EACH OTHER
transformers and mlp are completely incomparable in this sense
fucks sakes it's in World of Warships
like as much as I hate "the gendered" toy shtick unfortunately it still works and MLP is very much a "girly" property
(even aside from that it goes against the entire point of the IP to pit people to the death)
yeah, MLP is a very non-violent property
it still annoys me the other transformers skins dont release until like october lol
there are Hasbro IPs that they'd put into a fighting game
I think it's less the gender aspect and more the tone of the property
It would be like putting Crayon Shin-chan in Street Fighter
didnt fluttershy snap a bear's neck lol
As a gag sure
also jeez the size difference
Futurama..? I wanna be Homer
probably in a few months
1 more week.

I wasn't feeling the interest for BG3 initially but as we are getting there, NGL, I might actually be pretty damn hyped
I played a bit of early access and it's a great implementation of 5e.
Yeah I trust Larian, and I especially trust that they pulled all the stops with the D&D license
It's more that for the EA time I had to suppress my interest because I didn't want to play it before it was done, so now I'm slowly waking that up
Same, didn't touch it ever since i was gifted it (early in the EA). Now it's
time
It might be fun because there's a lot of changes between EA and live so you get to compare the differences in your run. I only did a few hours instead of the full act. (which is around 30 hours I think)

The advance collection is a very good modern release

Probably not worth the physical release unless you really want that portable nostalgia of swapping cartridges
oh wait
it's four covers
not four games- that makes sense

This is just.....so good

Sure, "Peaches" may have been a fun music video, but why should Bowser be the only nintendo villain to get his own song, other video game characters deserve their time to shine as well. That's why I've teamed up with Bootleg Dub productions again for the spiritual successor to Curse of the Crystal Coconut! Enjoy!
Special thanks to everyone who...
Big yikes. Making a self replicating worm for mw2 classic
The whole animation was great, but that mid-credits scene was awesome.

"Remind me if I ever want to kill myself that I can scale up to the heights of your blind devotion....AND LEAP DOWN TOWARDS YOUR IQ"
This is 10 out of 10 insult
Plus ,I think its so cool that they got original cast from DKC cartoon for this
It really is a fantastic line
"You can't play vanilla skyrim on modern computers"
Not Skyrim old
Thief old.
'98
oh god Thief '98 has
TANK CONTROLS
THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSE TO PLAY THIS WHEN I'M SO USED TO A AND D BEING STRAFE BUTTONS
oh ok there's actual strafe buttons they're just on Z and C
Just be the tank
I REFUSE
ah, I remember being a teenager when strafing wasn't the default yet
Immerse into a tank
Immerse yourself into a shower
YOU SMELL OF BEANS
I ATE A WARRIOR
I WILL EAT ANOTHER

not in Thief I ain't
I guess rogue is not a tank
most old games have tank controls for keyboard-only players, but they also can do WASD + mouse
even Doom 1.0 can!
I recommend binding leaning to Q, E and Alt+W respectively
(the last one is for leaning forward)
ooooh that's a keyboard-only thing
Same its like "Boy ,I cant wait to play this classic game.........Source port ,wide screen support patch ,bug fix patch ,better frame rate patch , uncompressed music mod ,and while we at it ,might as well pick up some hd sounds"
I just throw the rom in an emulator and take it as it comes with the safety net of save states lol
I have never went the extra mile to actually fully remaster an old game on an emulator or pc port but I can't deny that it's really cool that people care so much for the games to go through the effort of doing that
and after being exposed to it I understand why so many people from the emulation community complain companies don't go that far for their own remaster collections especially Nintendo who sometimes release versions worse than the original
the closest I got to doing anything like that is using a texture pack for HD textures in RE3 Nemesis and it definitely made me enjoy the game a hell of a lot more and it's now my favourite RE
Me too , tbh I never really liked original RE2 ,but 3 was so good its insane
Still feel bad for the remake tho
I'm still miffed that my RE3 broke right at the end so I couldn't do the final boss
(and that Code Veronica softlocked, though apparently that's "normal"
)
Code veronica.......its like one of those uncles that you dont wanna talk about
which is sad because the bulk of the game (Claire on the island) was a high point of the series
all i know is that Tale told me there's a dumb shoehorned romance
I have the unusual situation of having played RE1 remake, RE2, RE2 remake, RE3, RE0 and RECV all for the first time relatively close to each other within the last year or so
so I can at least pretend to be objectively comparing them
Yeah ,but then comes Kris and its just......oof
ive only played 4
but I'll never be able to convince Nire that RE2's just better with shoulder cam
Code Veronica is definitely an odd one, a lot of people want a remake of it and it's even rumored that it's going to be a thing but I don't understand how so many people seem to just love that game and put it as the pinnacle of classic RE, not to judge since someone else could say the same about me thinking RE3 is the best one but Code Veronica is... it exists..
4 is the only RE I played when it was new
considering how people talk about RE3 I was honestly surprised at how familiarly linear and not-open-world-at-all it was
i could try playing the RE1 remake but fixed camera has always seemed clunky to me
Code Veronica definitely has more cons than pros compare to RE3
Like steve
I hate steve
sometimes old games used fixed camera because they couldn't do anything else, but sometimes it really is the right choice
Q and E were already binded and I found a workaround since there's a "slide" control option so I just swapped the controls on that and the camera
RE1 is one of the few games where I genuinely believe fixed camera angles were the right choice
jill sandwich
(iirc all of the old Silent Hills do a mix of fixed and dynamic cameras, so I'm not sure if they count, although they definitely do fixed angles right when they do choose them)
i just like to have control over a camera in a 3d game idk
I also never understood what Wesker even doing in it
granted even in RE1 this leads to some shooting zombies you can't see, but the gameplay is slow and thoughtful enough that this is surprisingly just fine; the camera does become "another enemy" but it's one you always have ways to deal with
part of it is that RE1 also has an element of auto-aim
Wesker is there to spin kick Claire in the face and fly away
I do think fully manual aiming in 3D space really requires both camera and character control
(If we ignore the theory that Wesker is just a giant tsundere towards Kris and he desperately want to get his attention) he really doesnt need to be here
i cant think of Wesker without thinking of that one RLM clip
http://www.redlettermedia.com - To see the full RLM discussion of the Resident Evil series, watch the latest Half in the Bag on our website.
Just a note here: None of this was faked or even acted or enhanced. Rich Evans cannot fake his laughter. Sometimes it happens. Sometimes it doesn't. I can also not fake this. By the end I couldn't breathe ...
I should probably clarify that my praise for the bulk of Code Veronica is referring to game / level / puzzle design stuff
The dude just realised how much OP he is ,and decided to leave
Ever since Chris mocked Wesker's tyrant and called him pitiful Wesker hasn't been the same
story-wise, well, the old REs were never that great anyway, but yes Steve is a new low
To be fair the REs do have a satisfying enough level of 'connectiveness' to each game, it definitely feels like this one large story rather than separate games doing their own thing, but yeah it's not a game you're going to be playing because you wanna know the story, unless you're like me and you enjoy the characters so you are curious and wanna know
I think with RE5 it started to kinda go into this new era where it does feel a bit more disconnected or like it loses its way a bit
"I thought.......between us was something special.....Chris
"
And then RE6 came along ,I dont hate it,I think its is really fan game but it definitely went full nuts on action
RE1-3 got to be fairly connected by the shared Raccoon City outbreak setting
that can only go on so many games
3 wisely put a hard cutoff by literally nuking the setting
Kinda reminds me of half life 1 and its addons
of course Zero gets around it by being a prequel but still
All the way until 5 feels pretty connected to me, Code Veronica is obviously connected to 2 and it leads into 4 at least knowing Wesker is not only still around but working on something big
and then 5 reveals that
I remember liking the Revelations games but they are from this era of RE that I don't seem to have that much attachment towards I guess, pretty much the current era and present day at least inside the franchise, Ethan's adventures were cool but it definitely felt like a de-tour a bit
I did enjoy Rev 2 a lot especially with Moira and Barry
4 feels separate to me since Leon's kinda the only major shared element (I know Ada and technically Wesker are around but they're so minor, especailly in the original)
not that any of this really matters to why most of us played RE
Ehhh I dunno, I know what you mean but you do see a hell of a lot more of Wesker in Ada's campaign
Tbh I loved how disconnected re7 was ,aside from "obligatory Chris" it feels like a such stand out story
Leon's adventures in the game are definitely more contained to him but the entire thing overall does come from RE2 and leads into 5
RE7 was good although unfortunately it never felt like it was going anywhere, it really maintained a really good quality all the way throughout but it got pretty samey by the end, RE8 was fucking insane
I'm not saying there's no connection there, just that it doesn't matter to me when playing the games and doesn't affect which ones I enjoy more
Oh yeah I'm just talking about how the games connect overall nothing about that, when you're playing the games you're probably not actively thinking about much of it anyways
well depending on how into the story you are, there are some RE fans that are super into it
yep, it's a standard example of why gamers always distinguish between "story" and "lore"
I guess so, there is quite a bit of lore in the games to be fair, even RE1 had enough in there despite the main campaign focusing more on the events as they unfold rather than tell a story
I guess it's kind of like Dark Souls in a way???
pffff

I modded MGS Ground Zeroes for high framerate, so much better this way
it may screw up with physics but haven't noticed anything too bad so far
This is basically Wesker after RE1 ,every time Chris is around his general location

big boss shoots a guard and the guard starts flying away

yep, working as intended
yeah, I have that issue in BOTW in Cemu with the FPS unlocked
funny ragdolls are funny, still
Kaz "uhhhh ,yep ,I suppose you took him out ,boss......great job"
looking good boss
Tbn optimization of GZ and PP is really outstanding
it really is, I was able to play through all of TPP on a potato laptop computer
Kojumbo and his team did an incredible job with their engine
there's a small visual issue I can notice with the FPS unlock, Snake's attached weapon on his backpack constantly vibrates a bit
Same , its remarkable how stable it is , even when there are explosions and a lot of guards around
Oh that's just the latest R&D tech, Snake's back gets sore so he needs the vibration massage /s
BB "Why my backpack vibrates constantly ?"
Kaz "...............for tactical advantage"
Ground Zeroes was definitely masterfully staged and prepared for that iconic midnight rainy setting but the base in the game during the daytime looks really gorgeous
echo location of course
I like how you can yeet enemies off cliffs. Great level design
Of course, you can even yeet enemies into other enemies and then beat all of them up
the possibilities are endless when you're the boss
The last frame is just priceless
Imagine you just doing average guard duty going around a base ,and then you see a big boss ,the legend itself just laying in the middle of the road.
Majestically and tactically rolling away
You can throw a rock in them for a funny sound ,now that is a tactical espionage
Big boss doing his best pretending to be a car
i love how crazy RE8 was lol, and Ethan is like my fave protag
I always wanted to try Shantae series ,I wonder is it any good ?
it is, from what I've heard
Pirate's Curse is good. The rest of them are not that good.
I like the later ones
Seven Sirens is godawful and they got rid of their composer so the music is straight trash
1/2 Genie hero was a big disappointment but the music is fantastic
oh yeah they were finally able to get arnold's likeness
since the original t800 skin was just the robot version
super hype
ok actually pretty good
has a damaged version edit style, and a edit style to have the glasses on or off
nuh uh
its good

I'm sure there's another area post credits

surely this isn't a bad idea and won't have gigantic ramifications
Ngl, it's literally stuff like this that makes all the conspiracy theorists and doomsayers just become more fervent and zealous in their crusades.
For the love of God, wait a little bit until the boomers are gone and THEN start doing this, lol.
This is… not acceptable. The ESRB is a guideline system, not an enforcement mechanism.
Further, scanning for people’s ages is a borderline unsolvable problem, especially for younger people
You can estimate wide ranges but that’s it
the funniest part is that the mere suggestion of this idea tells me they don't care about people's feedback
It happened before, they try to push this revolutionary new technology and idea! people say no, that's a terrible idea stop it, they do it anyways and say we just don't understand or don't even say anything and just do it, and we have to reluctantly take it
This one is just wildly misguided
The existing system where stores are meant to just check age if someone is purchasing an M rated game is sufficient
It's such a wild borderline dystopian idea that I can't even wrap my head around how anyone would even think of proposing it, and the insane invasion of privacy aside, it would be so easy to ''fake'' a system like this if all you needed was a webcam of sorts and any face at all
like seriously, on all fronts this is a completely terrible idea
That is not what the article is actually proposing
It's COPPA again
They are verifying that people are over thirteen
I am not convinced this is a lot more practical, but it's not about game ratings
The thing is, a 12 year old could easily pass as a thirteen year old.
Hell, my nephew is six and still looks like he was four.
And fourteen year olds can often pass as younger
I’m sure machine learning magic can do a good job of it
But I’m not convinced it’s practically accurate
They're making sure that users under thirteen have someone much older than thirteen provide consent
That is indeed what they’re proposing
This seems pretty workable really
Aside from "you need webcams now"
13 and 25 are pretty easily distinguishable ages
At the same time saying it doesn’t retain identity information
Which is doable but would not be verifiable
Plus what is stopping anyone from just printing out a high quality picture of someone older and using that?
I have a revolutionary amazing idea to ensure that a minor below thirteen doesn't see content he's not supposed to, if you're a parent, monitor the fuck out of whatever your child is doing on consoles, computers, smartphones, etc, that way we don't have to invade people's privacy and scan their faces so they can play a game
It would need cameras that include depth information, like iPhones with FaceID for example
They don't accept still images and holding up a printout would be trivially detected
You don't need depth information, you just need to detect "is there a rectangle around this person"
Fair
Children under thirteen have pretty limited resources
Paper mache
I'm more talking about teens trying to play M rated stuff

That doesn't help companies with their legal obligation to not collect data from children at all though.
“Jimmy why did you make an unnervingly detailed paper mache model of my head?”
“No reason”
They'd find a way I'm sure. I know I did so I could play Conker's Bad Fur Day back in the day
That is not the problem they are trying to solve
Also they aren't scanning the kids' faces; they're scanning the parents' faces
Even if they find a foolproof way of doing this for younger kids wouldn't there be the issue of the ESRB holding data of people's faces though using this method?
I don't really care about the specifics of it myself, I don't want them getting too comfy with the idea they can do stuff like this especially for something as dumb as making sure someone under thirteen isn't playing a game, trust me, kids younger than that have played games they weren't supposed to, and now that kids have access to literally endless information kids will always find a way if they wanted to, and the ones that don't are already getting stopped by either the rating on games that is already there and works great or parent supervision which is probably the best way to go about it
No, because they don't hold the data.
This is literally what Tencent was doing in China that everyone was pointing and laughing about like a year ago
They aren't identifying people, just doing age recognition.
They are using it though against a database, probably would need some kind of user agreement for that use
No, they aren't
Supposedly it doesn’t collect information
Like I said, I don't really care about that or any of the specifics, I still don't like it one bit
As per the proposal
ML age analysis doesn't need a database
You can do this sort of thing locally on the device in principle
So where is this ML data then? Can't be magic, it's a highly complex set of data, like a database
It's in the weights of the model. Which I guess you could call a database if you want but it doesn't actually add faces to it or contain any user's face so I don't see how it's relevant
Distinguishing between "under thirteen" and "over twenty-five" probably doesn't need terribly advanced technology either
I feel there would be a lot of pushback from this method of age verification though, even if from misinformation and the like
(how you stop someone from claiming to be over thirteen in the first place is less clear to me, I must say)
Definitely would involve a lot of misinformation and conspiracy theories
For sure.
Because this sort of thing is fundamentally difficult to trust
That or physical sales would start to skyrocket again
Even though you can do it in a safe manner in principle
Physical sales would make no difference
COPPA is a privacy law; this would only apply to games that could reasonably lead to children illegally providing information to the game developer
Which puts it pretty exclusively in online game territory
Which makes games that can already feel pretty sketchy seem worse if they did implement this
Which is entertaining given they do so entirely to be more compliant.
These are very hard problems and if companies get pushed to be more complaint like this we’ll get unnerving tech like this. I’m not sure they’re problems we need to have in the first place, but here we are.
Like, children under thirteen need parental consent to chat in online games.
The point of this process so the children actually need to get that parental consent instead of lying.
(Again, not sure how you stop them lying about being over thirteen in the first place. This seems to assume they will be honest about that and then lie about consent. Which only seems likely to work the first time they encounter it.)
yeah, nearly every system I've ever seen for age restriction is fundamentally ill-conceived in that way
it's either trivially easy to lie, or it makes it so hard for adults to use that everyone ends up not using it at all, or bypassing the restriction system whether or not they qualify
Clearly time to get everyone a government issued ID from birth and just check that
adults frequently lie about their age, or at least birthday, on that kind of thing anyway
or you get a youtube situation where random videos are just deleted or half-deleted or shadow-whatever at the whims of what might as well be solar flares
I often lie about my age because selecting the right three numbers from drop downs is more effort than selecting just the year.
when youtube made us connect my son's account to the family account, it also auto-deleted comments he'd made before he turned 13. So my take is, I'll lie about my son's age, too.
protecting children from adult content is important, but we've proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that all software can reliably do is support a separate account with a parental lock; the rest has to be on humans
Also the year list keeps getting longer and I’m offended by this
yeah, it has to be on parents/guardians to have the right level of supervision in place for the child
(which, of course, itself requires balance -- overbearing parents can make things worse by freaking out their children and making them hide things)
If you want that you have to remove the substantial corporate liability for COPPA violations or this and YouTube and whatnot is what you get
yep
Traumatizing parenting styles are great
Lifelong scarring yay
interestingly, most of the complaints I heard growing up about "helicopter parenting" were my parents talking about other parents, not directly from any of my peers
Why is there so much scrolling these days
that sort of parenting also appears to make people vulnerable to getting in to terrible relationships as adults, like, not recognizing that their spouse is controlling and abusive because that level of control seems normal to kids who grow up under it
in retrospect, considering how many of my high school peers burned out and crashed in college, I don't think any of them understood the problem until it was too late
I’ve heard complaints from some of my peers, never from adults.
Parental supervision is, to me and my uneducated opinion, the ultimate and best way to ensure a child is not seeing content they're not supposed to
Children will always find a way to do things behind their parents' back if they can, no amount of any security measures will ever avoid that, and the internet, no matter how many guidelines you try to add to websites, will always be an unsafe place for children, it's already sometimes a very unsafe place for adults even
I never liked restricting most people's experience on the internet just to make it safe for children because children shouldn't even be there at all in my opinion, not without parent supervision anyways (a quick but perhaps 'dumb' example is youtube kids and how we've seen so many videos especially about any cartoon or animated media at all getting all the comments completely removed and videos marked as kids even when they're not for kids)
and yeah of course there has to be a balance between being a parent that's present and careful vs a complete control freak helicopter parent but that's always gonna be something parents need to balance regardless
don't wanna go into a full rant about it though
Here's another melffy card.
the weirdest part of the ps5 controller's adaptive triggers not working is that doing the steam test seems to indicate that STEAM detects the adaptive triggers being pulled in degrees, rather than an all or nothing
so what's going on
LOL
Yo, decided to try severed steel, one of the free Epic games this week, it's pretty great.
Basically superhot but with destructible walls, parkour, and an hand cannon.
Nothing high concept, but if you want a few hours of bullet time jumping through the air shooting a bunch of enemies and feeling like a badass to high BPM music, it's a good time
I've been waiting for this game to finally come out
i plan to play it someday but i know i cant yet bc if i dare jump from ff14 to another banjillion hour long game i will not be able to control myself and i refuse to ping pong between the two
If I'm remembering right, you tried Divinity Original Sin 2 and didn't really like it? This game is by the same studio so I dunno if you'll like it
Normally I don't buy AAA games, at least not on release, but this is the one time I did for multiple reasons. I'm 100% confident in Larian to deliver an excellent game, but also they chose an actually reasonable regional price unlike most other AAA games
ive also heard it compared to dragon age games a lot and i really really enjoyed that series, so... i dont know
Ehh. I'd say that DA is a similar style in the sense it's RPG but they do feel quite different
with divinity 2 i just couldn't get off of tutorial island. five to eight or so hours later n i was still so, directionless. i mean, i liked the gameplay. i just like when games give me more to hang onto story wise when tryin to hook me than "here's an island. try to escape"
i tend to prefer more tightly written storylines than a sandbox approach (though i very much realize that the point of dnd esque games is to let you loose in a world to fuck around n find out) but its not like thats a 100%. disco elysium was a blast after all. so maybe i just gave up on divinity 2 too quickly. bg3 bein a newer game gives me slightly more hope for the onboarding process so to speak?
and its gonna have monk. i like punching
either way im (gonna try to) not touch giant rpgs until im caught up with ff14
The only thing I didn't like about Divinity Original Sin 2 was the constant elemental effects you had to deal with in every fight. Everything was either on fire, or on evil fire. Magic exploding barrels were everywhere too.
oh god the exploding barrels
I think that elemental effects were fun, but I do agree that there were too many of them
I think everyone likes to bring up the blackpits fight as the worst example of this
Yeah, you had to have a character or two who could cast rain to deal with it
where literally everything is on fire, your party is on fire, the enemies are on fire, the whole level is on fire
and the worst thing is that it was cursed fire too so you couldn't put it out
I hate cursed fire so much
Yeah. I think I quit the game during a cursed fire fight. I was sick of it.
but if not overdone, I think the elemental effects can be really fun and clever
The rest of the game was great though
moments like "oh, there's a water barrel next to this group of enemies. If I smash that and then cast an electric spell on the puddle, that'll stun all of them and give me an extra turn" are very rewarding
can you play divinity without resorting to magic?
absolutely
there's definitely viable warrior/rogue/whatever builds
though when you control a party of 4 characters, I dunno if you'd really wanna go no magic at all
it's just more fun when you have different kinds of characters
You say that, but having the entire place be a sea of fire and killing the enemies with it was at the same time overwhelming yet also hilarious
When I was still at the office, a coworker and I played a 2 man D:OS2 game, using the 'lone wolf' trait for each of us I think it was, so we only needed 2 instead of 4. A good ranger character is stupefyingly strong. I think my coworker was using the polymorphing magic character, I think?
But yeah the ranger character is so good
(class, rather than character I should say)
yeah, you absolutely don't have to play mage or have a mage
non-magic builds can be extremely strong
I think daggers were okay too
But I honestly think the ranger build is the strongest in the game
yeah rogue is quite strong too
@uneven epoch clearly you need to go bows
pdp?
yes
Are you kidding me? I LOVED that fight! It felt like an actual siege, and you were the outnumbered and outgunned defenders. That was the first fight in the game that really made me think like a tactician and made me calculate every possible scenario, and even though I died a lot, I loved every bit of it. Finishing that fight was the most satisfying thing ever.
And it only kept getting better after that.
My main character was a ranger/fighter hybrid (about 1-2 levels in fighter, iirc), and holy shit, that dude was doing soooooooooo much damage.
I really hope Larian Studios can make 5e Rangers just as good as they were in D:OS2, because I really want that long-distance one-shot-one-kill sniping again.

What are you guys playing for your first campaign?
Gun
You going for that Dark Urge thingy?
Monk. I must punch things
What type of game is D:OS 2 and Baldurs Gate
Baldurs Gate 3 is coming out now? Heard a lot of hype around that
Next month i think
Thursday, specifically
Turn based RPG. Ever play the first dragon age, for example?
Ahh. DA2 is still kinda similar to DA1 though, so it's of a similar vein
FFXVI looks amazing
Are you completely solo in that game or do you have a party with you?
You have a party
But the characters in your party automatically change depending on what part of the story you're at
Might become more flexible as you get further
I do not think you ever get much of a say in who is with you, and you never get to control them directly (though you can give orders to your dog)
it is, it's one of the games that has a great potential on PC in terms of visuals
can you pet the dog?
The reason the Smash Bros. series has continued into the modern era has everything to do with the events discussed in this episode!
What exactly did Mr. Iwata request??
[Game Concepts] Super Smash Bros. Brawl
https://youtu.be/dXpFTHtlmCo
Pffft hahaha
Ten bucks says Nintendo approached him recently to make a new Smash Bros title for Switch 2
My favourite moment was when MA pet the dog a few times and was disappointed there was no achievement for it. Then he did so again and the achievement ding went off for "You Can Pet The Dog"

I think I see Sakurai's career with Smash ending in one of two ways. He declines to make another one and that's the end of the series. Or he literally dies while making another one, like how he apparently nearly died while making Ultimate.
The man doesn't know how to sleep.
i think sakurai isnt making another one, how he talks about ult really seems like hes done with it
bascially confirming it awhile back
Yeah a lot of the older guard will probably be retiring or being replaced over the next decade
Heck. Miyamoto is 70 this year
He’s not dismissing the idea of doing another one
I read this as a not so subtle “I want a raise. Also here’s a reminder that I’m the only person who can make this game happen, with citations.”
But yeah, I sorta expect Ultimate to be the last one, more likely than not
No, lies.
Miyamoto is immortal.
He is ageless and always will be.
I think Smash is Sakurai's passion, every time he takes a break from the series he starts wanting to make the next one.
Ultimate feels like it was designed as a platform
no other Smash game even comes close in terms of character count or DLC
I could see it sticking around for a loong time, not unlike Mario Kart 8 (which also has a lot more tracks than any other MK game with the Booster Course Pack)
Stay off minecraft for a bit
Another day another RCE exploit
Luckily none of the affected mods are ones that I use.
neato
are we thinking it's going to be essentailly a higher spec Switch, no compat break or new gimmicks?
i think that's most likely
i don't know tech jargon but the article said it'll have a higher CPU, idk if that means anything
I mean, it does, but the CPU is one of several core components one would expect to be upgraded
Really hoping the new GPU is capable of DLSS
The switch is very underpowered conpared to other consoles
It's underpowered compared to 5 year old phones
That would be the most logical business move and given the chips available on the market/projected to be on the market in 2024, that’s again a rational bet to make.
since I don't game on my phone I have no frame of reference for that
phone gaming
The only reason it may not be fully backwards compatible would be due to software design choices on Nintendo’s part, essentially
I don't generally like reading these articles that pretty much boil down to conjecture and ''the next console may be this or it may not be this!'' but they do mention that they're trying to keep costs down and so I'm not expecting a significant upgrade from the already existing switch which would be incredibly disappointing but again, I'd advice to keep whatever is said in these types of articles with a very small microscopic grain of salt
i hope that if it is backwards compatible i can transfer over my very large digital games collection 🙃
I wouldn’t bet on it
I just hope it's emulatable as quickly as possible
That seems realistic
That’s basically what’s available in terms of hardware, after all.
ARM stands for A Rare Mario
Yep. I expect Prime 4 to be a cross gen game, so hopefully it's a good showcase of the new hardware
the ware is too hard

warioware
the way people talk about the Switch specs feels deeply at odds with how well BotW/TotK performed for me
we should only refer to Nintendo hardware and software as WarioWare
The first party games on Switch perform a lot better than the vast majority of second and third party titles, it’s weird
Botw/TotK run like dogfood on original hardware
I have to disagree with you there, they perform quite well
I remember frame drops when I played those games, but mostly for their novelty because they were so rare; most of the time I had great draw distance and smooth gameplay no matter what nonsense I was up to
Horrid frame drops whenever anything happens. Especially combat
weird, that is absolutely not my experience
Okay.
and my Switch was one of the old bundled-with-BotW ones so I assume it's the weakest of whatever spectrum of Switch submodels exist now
Have there been any changes?
I feel like I've heard of a "switch lite"?
I've definitely heard complaints about TOTK over performance for sure
Those exist but are not more performant
They just don't dock and the controllers aren't removable
Nintendo games tend to perform fine; it's everything else that is a disaster
Cheaper Switch, yeah, but same internal hardware
perhaps I just never did any of the things that hurt TotK's performance
It’s not hard to force frame drops in any of the games if you arrange for a lot of physics related things to happen all at once, but the worst you’ll come across would be dropping to about 25FPS for a second.
BotW’s worst offender was the excessive fog effects in the Kokiri Forest where the Master Sword pedestal is located and that went down to about 20-ish at worst. But that’s the one thing that stands out in that game.
The rest of it is kinda impressive in how it manages to be quite performant for what amounts to 2014 mobile hardware.
But third parties, like Pokémon, are atrocious
Nintendo’s first party engineers know how to optimize for the hardware very well and it shows
Looking forward to Call of Duty, Switch Edition
Yeah that’s gotta be cloud, there’s just no way
On the other hand, Metroid Dread, which is technically developed by a third party, has locked 60 FPS
Only some of the cutscenes in Dread will drop to the 50s very briefly (less than a second)
da only times i have fps drops in TotK on my Switch Lite is when using Ultrahanf
I wonder how much of this is Nintendo having truly special insider knowledge of Switch hardware, and how much is them (presumably?) investing more in optimization than most third party devs
As I understand it, Nintendo doesn’t hide any special engineering knowledge from devs. I can only assume it’s just familiarity and taking the time to make the optimizations.
I doubt they have any special knowledge, it's Generic Nvidia Mobile GPU
The most recent Pokémon games may have done better had Game Freak been given more time to work on it, who knows.
I think they just actually care
my personal experience maintaining software with the occasional performance problem is that, at the level of complexity our apps have these days, client device performance tends to be either "faster than anyone would ever notice" or "so slow it's bad no matter how much hardware we throw at it" with very rarely anything in between
so if some of these games are just not getting optimized properly in the first place, I dunno how much better hardware helps
but I also have never tried emulating a Switch game
I imagine most switch ports are just there to check the "there is a switch port" box, and there is not much interest in somehow making something that actually runs on ancient hardware
who has?
I have, it is vastly better.
4K, 30 FPS, generally solid (60 sometimes if games have hacks to make that work)
This is also far away from my experience
I have
Which involves running the same software on phones and on watches (that have a quarter of the memory and processing speed).
Phones are easy, watches are a constant battle
And yes it is vastly better. Pokémon was vastly more playable on emulator than the actual games on actual hardware even before the damn games released
This has held for most Switch games, incidentally
I wonder if anyone's done a technical analysis on why the performance was so bad
Good question
TotK performed quite well on an emulator, even with visual glitches, in the ten days before TotK came out
I originally thought a lot of the graphical weirdness in the emulator was emulator bugs.
I was wrong, the real hardware did them too
must've been fun being emu devs that week
Yes sure drop everyone more than three metres away from me down to 3 FPS, nobody will notice.
Three metres is not, it turns out, very far away
The games are just not finished, I’m pretty convinced of that
The other thing about this when it comes to emulation is that my computer has about three orders of magnitude more GPU compute than the Switch does.
A lot is forgiven at three orders of magnitude
oh
ok yeah I might be weird because the app I maintain doesn't do 3D graphics or other high-GPU usage stuff
(CPU compute is much closer, at a mere forty times faster, or much less if single threaded)
A lot is also forgiven at 40x faster
Basically rendered any inefficiencies irrelevant
Though the emulation part eats into some of that
Prime Remastered took a while to get done though
Yeah
Emulators were struggling with Prime Remastered for a while
JIT shader compilation required all over the place
Of course my Switch draws seven watts and my computer draws about a hundred times that, too
Not just getting a thousand times faster for free here

SDCC 2023 may be over, but we have another special piece of news to share. Like last year, along with the Q&A held at the panel, we were able to ask Hasbro some additional questions on the show floor, going over a variety of different topics including Legacy, Studio Series, video games and more. I died inside
A: Sadly, apparently Activision’s not sure what hard drives they’re on in their building.```
I just wanna play those games again
Celeste is now on gamepass
That's...actually a new one, lol.
Hats off to them
that's not unexpected, most large game companies (especially those focused on publishing rather than developing) don't have dedicated people to categorize and manage legacy data
some companies clearly put in more effort than others, like Nintendo
Yeah, this isn't actually new. For instance, Homeworld: Cataclysm (or whatever they're calling it these days, pace Blizzard...) wasn't included in the remastered version of the Homeworld games because it turned out that whatever records had existed of the source code and other raw data had been lost in the intervening time period (so GoG ended up rereleasing it with a WINE wrapper and not much else). Presumably they could have redone it more or less from scratch (but with significant elements already apparent from the finished game, particularly the campaign design), but felt that this wasn't worth the time and money it would have taken.
Similar thing happened to the original silent hill 2 and 3 for konami
They had to use unfinished beta builds for the silent hill hd collection
So, gamers: Best game to play while working? As in, likely a turn based game that you can do for 1-2 minutes per round (or more rounds in that time frame). Working from home, so no need to worry about alt tabbing
First thing that came to mind was civ games and slay the spire
Probably civ
Idling to Rule the Gods, Slay the Spire, Wildfrost, Peglin, Factorio (peaceful mode), Rimworld, Dungeons of Dredmor, Monster Sanctuary
Into the Breach, XCOM 2, One Step From Eden, Europa Universalis.

Amazing

PSA: Baldur's Gate 3 weighs in at 122GB and there's no preload https://t.co/K8c3jOLlP0
And no midnight release.
thicc
I went to my library a day or two ago and thought "ha ha, i'ma preload it!". Realized 10 seconds in "wait, this is just the EA stuff..."

Rift wizard, pretty much all of the steamworld franchise, roguebook, loop hero, a million different vampire survivor likes (RICE, bio prototype, halls of torment etc), revita, a shit tonne of incremental games (trimps, evolve, theory of magic, incremental epic hero (1 or 2)), tiny rogues, the last spell, stacklands
i prob should have left the ping on for that list
Well loop hero's gonna be free this week on epic, so that's convenient
One of my favorite things in #BaldursGate3 is watching pigs go down ladders. 🤣
💖 1625
all the ones in "incremental" section are free but require you to like incrementals and most of them are below like 5-10 anyway
I have a few vamp survivor style ones as well but that ain't exactly turn based
true, but they're low enough complexity/short enough "sections" that you can either pause or and pickup extremely easily and/or essentialy have a minute or two long turns
the only one on the list i'd question for that would be halls of torment which is pretty long and bitey
I actually have been playing that one
just not during work
Huh, not as hefty as I feared.
No preloading sucks though
It could’ve been bigger.
No preloading sucks, I wonder if it's because of the Early Access build that makes it harder to organise
Like, with a preload they would have had to upload an unplayable version over a playable one, which would have been weird
It could also be a procedural issue on Valve’s side where if they have early access, doing preload is difficult or just not an option
My guess is since they have to update it and the update breaks saves they dont want peoples saves being overwritten before launch
