I don't like the segmented mecha style of the black suit but that's about the only thing I don't like about it
I'm very glad that it actually looks like a living organism fused with his body and not just his regular suit but black rather than red and blue
Sorry Spiderman 3 fans but that symbiote suit was god awful
Sorry that was not done.
strong agree
i thought of it more as like muscles which makes it look cool to me
They are muscles, I just don't like the design of it because it looks like plating on armor especially on the face, it's a small detail but it bugs me for some reason, also the fact that he doesn't have the squared white shape on top of his hands which is a huge small nitpick of mine
but it's one of the best symbiote suits I've seen
the face makes it look like a helmet and it just gives me robot armor vibes but that's the only thing I don't like
of course, it's wet for that raytracing effect 🌧️
I like the fade on the eyes it makes it look like actual organic eyes
Yeah the entire body is super slimy and gooey and extremely reflective
Spider-Man Remastered has an outfit that is pretty much designed for that, it's full of mirrors
it does look pretty nice, reminds me of early 2000 tech demos when environment mapping was the shit (even more so if it had bump mapping on top)
this was the shit in 2001
Which is why I find it funny that Miles is very nonchalant about it: "New threads?"
Like, dude, you just saw multiple gooey tentacles emerge from his back, and the entire suit wrap around him like it was alive. And that's all you say?

I hope to see Miles complain that his suit isn't as cool as Pete's symbiote suit as a reference to Peter telling Miles that his suit is way cooler than his (debatable)
I do like how this Pete fully utilizes the entire symbiote capabilities when fighting and moving around, using the symbiote as tentacle/spider arms to move around quicker is something I never saw before personally and he probably picked it up from Otto
or rather, how the symbiote fully syncs with pete's actions and helps him during fights, this Peter seems like he can't control the symbiote very well
I also like how the symbiote suit doesn't really turn Peter "evil", it just makes him a lot more aggressive and more intent on punishing foes rather than letting justice take care of that for him. He's still a hero when wearing it, he's still saving people, and he still has his morals. He's just a little angrier about it.
Maybe Ixrec knows but I think the original symbiote from the comics worked a lot differently than the usual depiction we see of it like in Raimi's Spiderman, Spectacular, etc
I think the whole turning peter evil and emo was something that happened after the fact
Yep, seems like it originated from the Spidey cartoon that made peter more aggressive and angrier with the symbiote
this got used in subsequent books and stories after the fact, but in the actual books before that the symbiote never affected peter's demeanor or anything, Peter and Reeds just freaked out because the symbiote was a living organism and it was trying to permanently host with Peter and they forcefully removed it
also something something McFarlane didn't like the black suit and wanted Peter to take it off and that created Venom or something
yeah the Symbiote was retconned (?) to amplify the hosts anger and aggressiveness
iirc they aren't inherently evil, that's just what most of them do
kojima posted this during the mgs3 remake reveal 💀 https://twitter.com/HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN/status/1661483747483713537
wonder how kojima feels about the remake of MGS3
Kojima doesn't seem to care/give the time of day to any project he wasn't involved in
If he's not involved in the MGS3 remake, he probably won't comment on it, because he's not interested, he still actively engages with tweets and posts about the MGS games he worked on
wow, 20 bucks than what the industry is trying to force!
I was writing a lot but lost the motivation to finish the thought.

Consider yourself spared lol.
But in a basic response, I just find it silly.
The symbiote feeds on adrenaline. And one way to get a constant supply is to keep the host angry and irritable, always on-edge.
At least, in the comics
In the original black suit story, Peter kept getting more aggresive and angry, until he almost let a villain die (in a pretty awful way). That was what made him realize he couldn't control the suit and had to get rid of it.
Fair enough
which original story? on the run of Spidey after secret wars the reason he took it off is because the symbiote was alive and was slowly permanently bonding with Peter, but it didn't seem to affect him and make him more aggressive until later retcons afterwards
god Kraven looks so good
Bungie is reviving Marathon, however you may be disappointed by what it will turn out to be.
||A PvP extraction shooter.||
yeah, it was being discussed here already
I just cannot not laugh at this

It seems it is confirmed that Konami is 'keeping' all the OG VAs(JP) in the MGS3 remake (MGSD). This includes the VAs who passed away, and some people are suspecting that this may imply that Konami is going to reuse voices recorded during MGS3.

I love how AAA games these days are either straight-up masterpieces or pure unadulterated dumpster fires. No inbetween, lol.
There's always Ubisoft
too busy for games today. gonna play ff14 tomorrow
I think lots dumpster fires are actually 7/10 that fall flat because of bloated hype fueled expectations
It's why you don't get the "it's okay" games anymore
I would rather play a Cyberpunk than an Assassin's creed game any day of the week, I think it's a much better game, but Cyberpunk was supposed to be the best thing ever released while AC is supposed to like..exist and trap you into a completion hell for a few months.
So AC is well regarded and Cyberpunk rightly panned
All done
In case anyone wants yet another copy of the game.

Oh it's ultimate edition, nice!
Yup!
With the introduction of the Ultimate Edition, Bethesda Softworks offers you the chance to double-down and get the complete package of New Vegas fun. For the first time in one package, you can get all the Fallout: New Vegas content including the full suite of highly acclaimed add-on content: Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues and Lonesome Road. To sweeten the pot, you’ll be armed with the latest cache of unique weapons, ammo types and recipes from the most recent add-on packs: Courier’s Stash and Gun Runners Arsenal.
is there any reason to not own all the DLC at this point? the games, like, 15 years old now or something
It's cheaper to get the base edition
sure
but its some of the best DLC in gaming
Bethesda used to offer the ultimate edition for five dollars on sale, but nowadays they don't sell it for less than fifteen which is unacceptably high
I really enjoyed the base game but found the DLC in all Fallout games including this one to be bothersome and not that important of an addition, so I recommend the base game alone unless someone intends to use a lot of mods
bothersome?
It's a hassle to find and get there, and the quality of exploration is not meaningfully different
respectfully disagree but fair enough
@wind stump get another free copy nerd
this Gollum game looks so awful wtf

oh, this just now happened?
I've been disc free since... uh... I dunno, maybe Doom Eternal?
ive been disc free since 2017 because the Switch uses cartridges 😎
I've been pc gaming for the last few years now so I haven't used a disc in a long time
but part of me does miss the feeling of holding a new game in your hands, looking at the cover art and the instruction manual when devs still cared about that stuff
i miss instruction manuals 🥲
<insert Tunic reference>
they were mostly a waste of paper but some older games you definitley need them
like Zelda I for instance
they used to add lore there
I think it depends on the slant of how important it is. Some games have discs but they're only proof you own the thing as they force you to download the entire game anyways. In those cases I guess it has some resale value.
However for game preservation it doesn't do anything.
yes yes i'll play that game some day
listen im gonna be playing TotK for the next like, 3 months
yeah I lost interest in discs the first time I put one in a console and was told to wait for a >10 GB day 1 patch
lol
thats a light patch
at least with books there is a genuinely different experience between paper and digital
And then after that I'm gonna hold you to your Majora's Mask playthrough 🔫
with games, the physical object is now just an extra step with no benefits, often many downsides for older games you can use emulators on
too MANY GAMES
Tell me about it
i wonder if TotK will have DLC
no they came out in the latter half of the year
oh my bad
i don't exactly remember when Trial of the Sword came out but Champion's Ballad was around December iirc
cause i remember playing Champion's Ballad on my way to see Paddington 2
then maybe, tho they're literally giving you all the DLC for free so far
aside from the bike, havent seen that but its not really necessary
I want to get a disc reader for my pc so I can buy star trek
I'm hoping for a DLC that fixes the stupid ability problem
||maybe they could do what they wanted to do with Skyward Sword, and make the DLC be about Zelda's time in the past?||
maybe! or the ancestors
or more stuff with the current sages
Totk will 99% have DLC because ||one of the most beloved characters Kass (very DLC centric in botw) is completely missing from the game||
oh yeah!
the DLC will focus on ||you playing as a hudson sign guy||
I mean its not a joke its pretty much proof
no, fuck that guy
theres no other reason they would include every single character except him
||Penn and Kass sitting in a tree, k i s s i n g. Then Penn reports on it ans Kass joins mario's band||
Cinna have you seen ||Mineru||
yeah
she's so cute
||not as hot as her brother those ears do her no favors||

please, no one likes judy. it's all about Nick
?????

||what animals are the Zonai supposed to be like?||
||Furries.||
||I don't think they're really supposed to be any specific animals, they're just sort of a generalized anthromorphic critter, sort of like how Zora are anthro fish (and have a variety of fish bodies) and the goron are anthromorphic rocks and the rito are anthro birds and the korok are anthromorphic lazy people. The Zonai are anthro mammals||
that makes since
Yeah physical media is on its way out
And then companies will scramble to justify $70 price tags
well, I don't think that price tag was ever primarily about the disc/box manufacturing cost
TotK's $70 price is an interesting case
I think it may actually be related to currency value/exchange rate
https://eshop-prices.com/games/378-the-legend-of-zelda-breath-of-the-wild?currency=USD
https://eshop-prices.com/games/11012-the-legend-of-zelda-tears-of-the-kingdom?currency=USD
You can see that their price choice is...weird
its not the first game to push 70 dollars
Yes, but also it's not even 70 dollars in Japan
It's significantly more expensive compared to BotW in some regions
but is it more expensive in Japan than botw was
like 2 dollars, yeah
I bet when you say 2 dollars in yen its a big number
lol
less than 300 yen
like 220~250 yen
Some countries even kept the exact same price
Both are 74800 KRW
You can see in the website that both are sold at the price equivalent of $62.23 in New Zealand
man it was like 103 dollars here
Same goes with a slightly cheaper price of $60.10 in Australia
exchange rates are killing me
But meanwhile US got $10 price increase
Brazil got about $12 increase
They definitely were trying to increase the price for sure

I've been disc-free and HDD-free in my main PC since 2013
I was definitely an early adopter of that new lifestyle
price/GB of SSDs was pretty high back then, so I only had 256 GB for everything
huh, I never framed it as "HDD-free", SSD just feels like an upgrade
it was pretty common to keep a secondary HDD around for games back then, but I didn't have any
that's what made it special – a less noisy PC with less vibrations 🙂
yeah I never did the secondary drive thing
I technically have an external drive around here somewhere for backup purposes, but I've never put games on it, and storage sizes are high enough these days I don't even use it any more
my 2 TB SSD with my main OS install is already running tight on my new PC, I keep too many games installed at once (bad habit)
(most of what I care to back up is already in cloud services by default; what little's left is a handful of documents I just throw into Dropbox)
I have another 2 TB SSD with Windows on it, which has like 70% of free space left… but I don't use Windows most of the time
I do try to uninstall large games as soon as I'm confident I'm done with them
since I rarely play a game more than once I find it easy to judge that
yeah yeah, I went a bit too eager when I set up this PC
goddamn, gta v is 100 gb these days?
remember when it was a ps3 game lol
yep, all the Online content has to be downloaded even if you never play it
it's like cosmetics in TF2, CS:GO, etc
one of live service's hidden curses 😛
@mossy flume @quiet swift
@slim thorn Hey Ix, you recently completed Planescape Torment (I assume the Enhanced Edition), right? I'm actually pondering if I should pick it up and try it, despite me not having a lot of experience with real-time-with-pause combat and overall preferring turn-based combat.
How's the story, the world, etc.? And in general, how did you find the gameplay? Also, how long did it take you to complete the game? (This last one is big for me because when it comes to RPGs, I like to get my money's worth, and not waste money on a 5-hour RPG experience, regardless of quality.)
yes it was Planescape Torment Enhanced Edition
I was told that the appeal is all in story/world, that's what I was playing it for, and those met my sky-high expectations
I can't fairly judge the gameplay since I rarely like anything under the "RPG" umbrella, but I followed a walkthrough for that aspect from the start and thus it rarely got in my way
my Steam time is probably misleading for all the usual reasons, but this is definitely 10s of hours rather than <5 hours, especially if you try to do most or all of the sidequests (https://howlongtobeat.com/game/7093 claims 30-40 hours which sounds right to me)
anything specific about the story/world? that at least I could go into great detail on, but it's definitely the sort of thing where going in blind is better (although I guess if you have any background in D&D, then you're already far less blind than I was
)
Hmmm...30-40 hours isn't too bad. Still kinda short, but I suppose for a 1999 game it's understandable.
more than that probably would've been too much for me anyway
As their release trailer states: "Was it so long ago? No, but not long enough".
When it comes to RPGs, I'm ALL about the long playtimes. 100+ average hours are awesome, because it means it's usually a lot more than that, and that there's soooooooo much to explore and find.
but off the top of my head I think most "RPGs" I've played were somewhere in the 20-60 hour range, Witcher 3 is the only one I can remember spending 100+ hours on, and as much as I love that setting that was definitely pushing it for me (and I was nowhere near completionist about it)
Alexia, play Adagio for Strings.
I played BG1+2 with the expansions and that was probably 100 hours to get near 100%
BG?
Baldur's Gate
ah
looks like BG1+2 EEs have the same price tag as PT EE, so I guess that's a fair concern
even if £16.75 is way cheaper than one of the modern AAA open world RPGs
Taken from the recent source code leak - also includes some excepts from milestone reports.
I originally thought about doing this with different characters, but nothing quite beat Comic Book Guy's delivery. Some of the clips are too funny to not share, so here they are separately: https://mega.nz/file/VdRB0CjA#6Mxv1L5jC_VKyVpDcQomHiLj3I8bAB65Y...
I would pay so much money to be able to see the source code of every game and experience the programmer's pain
we have the source code for that?
reinterpret_cast is certainly "stinky"
fwiw, although I have never personally tested this, where I work I would expect this sort of comment tone to meet some resistance in code review
usually I go for a tone more like "X should do Y, but it does Z instead for some reason, so here we hack around that with a Q"
''you unbelievably stupid motherfucker! (greg talking to himself)''
''Anger rising.... rant ending''

if: (!fucked)

first 30 seconds of the video is pretty much: ''this is a stupid fix, but it's fine for now'' ''this is dumb, but I don't have time to implement something better'' in a row
and now TF2's spaghetti code makes sense
to be fair, I do think ugly hacks are more common in video games for a bunch of reasons
even with modern online updates, games are much more of a "finished" product than e.g. a website or service like Google or Discord; at some point you're going to reduce or stop working on it so "it's not worth doing the proper fix" is far more likely to be a legitimate argument
single-player games in particular never have to contend with some other online services having an outage or updating its APIs or whatever; console games don't even need to worry about an open-ended range of hardware configurations
and finally, if a user runs into some bug caused by one of these hacks, the consequences are much more likely to be a cool speedrunning trick than a massive security breach
or a silly internet video that paradoxically makes your fans more interested lol

this absolutely shocked me
it doesn't even show up on the youtube search when you search "marathon trailer bungie"
all I get are the reuploads from the console channels
how in the hell did it get 17 million in a day
Word of mouth.
Friends sharing the video.
Bungie's email listing.
and of course, replays. (they're not supposed to count but I guess it could be a factor if it glitches or something)
Yeah, but 17 million
It doesn't sound weird to me, specially the average consumer wanting to know more.
it's because those numbers in one day is insane for a trailer of any kind of media
GTA V reveal trailer got a whole lot more than Marathon
GTA in general is a whole other world
the fact that it's even at a quarter of the views in a day is insane
Cause I haven't seen nearly the same amount of discussion on it elsewhere
even in here, spider man was talked about a bit more
Let me put it this way...
Many boomers played Marathon. :v In general, three generations may have played Marathon.
yeah I know, but surely the bigger audience at this point who would get to new trailers first is a lot younger?
Maybe, I don't know.
If it eventually got 17 million views at its release date, then I wouldn't really bat an eye, it's bungie after all
but in a day
I wish I could download the trailer at its native file size.
Its such a good trailer.

My guess is that most of them are already resigned to u-play anyway
That's where a lot of the bigger deals will be too, I think
That a longshot IMO
Today, Florian Mueller who is a prominent patent lawyer following the case discovered that the UK regulator's senior director used to work for a firm that is actively representing Sony, potentially highlighting a conflict of interest, and a degradation of impartiality.

The DCMA letter sent to Valve cites the anti-circumvention language of the DMCA and specifically claims that "the Dolphin emulator operates by incorporating these cryptographic keys without Nintendo’s authorization and decrypting the ROMs at or immediately before runtime. Thus, use of the Dolphin emulator unlawfully 'circumvent[s] a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under' the Copyright Act."
Is that how dolphin works?
I don't know
I assume Nintendo would have a reason to DMCA an emulator when there is already a case which admits the legality of the emulator, but we should see
Dolphin is pure HLE, it does not require encryption keys or even a BIOS copy
Nintendo also often makes some stupid decisions
I think they are mostly doing this to scare its developers, because doing a counterclaim is scary after what happened to re3
Why is Nintendo not sending the DMCA directly to Dolphin's website? Why are they not suing them if they're confident?
Honestly usually I try to think that Nintendo would be reasonable at certain degree, but I'm not sure about this case
Nintendo is known to be rabid regarding emulation
It is true, but like a lot of time they tend to do something at least technically legal
This one I'm not very sure
the reason why we didn't see any tlou factions in the playstation showcase https://twitter.com/Naughty_Dog/status/1662166716892479488
i just accidentally created a badass Rancor finishing move
Once nintendo tries to abuse the dmca system
If dolphin really were doing these things why not file them directly to the emulator devs instead of steam
I would like to see a counter claim of this but i doubt we will see much unless valve gets involved

Nice.
Seems like we're gonna be getting the MGS3 we've always wanted since the Pachinko release in like 2016
I still have extremely mixed feelings about this though, as I do with Silent Hill
This is Konami after all, and especially after the troubles with Kojima remaking the metal gear franchise without him and his team is something I'm extremely worried about, there just isn't Metal Gear without him and his team
I did hear that they will retain the original voice acting, as in, the exact same audio lol which I wonder if it's Konami trying to cut costs or appease the fans, if it's going to be a case of Demon's Souls or Dead Space where they ''''remake'''' the game but it's essentially a remake-remaster where nothing changes I guess that's fine
The pachislot cutscenes for MGS3 are 1:1 to the originals, down to the same exact motion capture and syncronization of audio, so they can totally just do that
My opinion until it's out and reviewed well by people I trust, is that there is zero way that Konami is able to pull off a remake of MGS3
I will need for the opposite to be actually proven to me before I believe anything else
I don't have any faith in Konami, not anymore, I'm a bit weirded out seeing other people be so excited about this and Silent Hill, not that they can't be, but after being a SH and MGS fan for so long I just already made peace with both franchises being dead and I also have negative trust in Konami in general
Without Kojima and his team there is no Metal Gear, it was all born from them, so the safest bet right now is to just do a 1:1 remake of sorts, which would work, it wouldn't necessarily add anything new or whatever but it also wouldn't completely change or potentially destroy what MGS is
I mean people can be excited about it, I just don't think they can do it based on my experience with Konami in the past few years
Yeah, that's what I think, and I feel the exact same about the SH2 remake as well
Which is why I'm looking forward to SH:f more than SH2R
Konami could've done Metal Gear Rising 2 and it would've been received positively all around but this is what they wanted to do I guess, guess we'll see what happens
I have no idea about Silent Hill and their internal organisation to make it, for MGS I am 100% certain they lack at least 1 Hideo Kojima which is what makes it impossible for them to do this
well, it's a similar case with Silent Hill
the members of Team Silent shift a bit between the projects, but it's been a consistent feeling among fans that ever since SH4 things weren't the same
I think SH2 in particular necessitates the presence of the original team way more, especially with developers like Takayoshi Sato, and so far Bloober has only mentioned working alongside composer Akira Yamaoka and monster designer/artist Masahiro Ito, which is great but I would've thought they'd bring the main writer(s) and directors first
also the CEO of Bloober went on record defending Konami too so there's less faith on my part thanks to that
the weird part is, because Silent Hill and MGS are pretty big names, I think even if the games end up coming short they will be a success anyways
I mean, I don't really care about that.
My concern is more getting to play decent games so if it's bad I'll just not play it and if it's good I'll just play it
If it's bad and does well it doesn't really change anything for me
Good or not the real problem for Konami is outside of remakes and remasters they can’t exactly go on to make a new Metal Gear title as without Kojima it simply won’t be Metal Gear.
They burned that bridge down and it’s highly unlikely that can ever be rebuilt
Metal Gear Rising was a worthy successor to the MGS franchise, but that was only because Kojima's team was working on it alongside Platinum
even if they did make Metal Gear Rising 2, the writing would likely suffer
Can’t see Konami being able to convince Platinum to work on that without Kojima involved
dont worry, they release next a new update for the collection next

I preordered the limited edition of Trails into Reverie, partly because I knew it would be solid as Durante handled the PC and PS5 ports and partly because Falcom have hardly steered me wrong since I found out about their games.
That and it’ll be rarer than hen’s teeth to find after launch

Yo cute

New update on this.
It’s been discovered that Dolphin was indeed using Wii Common Keys as part in their source code since Dolphin 3.0 it seems.
So… Nintendo unfortunately has full legal right to enforce the DMCA.
While its debatable to have such key legitimately or cracked or hacked… its quite hard to defend it against a case.
yeah, this stems from the relative impossibility of getting those keys in a legal way
Worst part is that this was not even a proper C&D, it was literally Valve asking Nintendo if this was A-Ok to release on Steam.

Dolphin would probably have to take the route yuzu did and having people source a key themselves in order to get by with it
That’s not really required, apparently its pathetically easy to bypass the key.
Circumventing the copy protection for a product you own is only illegal in the US
This is the problem ^
Basically, any method of bypassing is illegal.
The only way is for the owner to basically shove the key themselves, in secret.

At least we have gamecube emulation untouched.
That will be okay, no encryption required.
regardless ive already installed the lastest dolphin installer in case nintendo tries to take this further
Remember to use the beta builds, instead of the stable one
The stable builds are sometimes years old
it was latest update available on the site
2 week old
i imagine dolphin will probably have an update removing that line of code in the future
Yes, but that means Wii emulation is blocked unless the user figures it out. Not even a tool can be provided as that would be deemed illegal.

I'd be okay with them just not including the keys. They're so easy to get for other emulators.
Yup
that being said lockpick is still on the wayback machine
when word got out they DMCA it people archived that shit REAL quick
Also Nintendo has been seeking blood for a while now, they’ve been this mad ever since the Gigaleak occurred.
yeah.
The Gigaleak changed things because for the first time ever, we got source codes for games that were never meant to be released… ever…
Also doesn’t help people were posting the mario movie on twitter dot com.

Also, Totk leaked in its entirety, cracked before its release, able to play on switch emulators
If only we could be a fly in a nintendo executive's office after discovering that
hence why nintndo went after lockpick
The emulator owners did there best given that situation basically saying. No troubleshooting it until after official release and if you admit to having it beforehand your perma banned from our discord/forums
And that didn’t stop people from doing it.
The fact it got cracked before its release just says it all.
Nintendo emulation has a quite dare devilish scene of folks compared to the Sony and the slowpoke Xbox scene.
Part of that is again. Nintendo offers little to no alternative means of playing their old titles
Because that is their business strategy.
The switch emulator is one thing
only Nintendo has a current-gen console both cracked and emulated
The Switch was cracked within a year.
It forced Nintendo to update the entire console, an entire revision.
Part of that too is the console is far behind performance wise people wanted decent performance on games
Yeah.
“People wanted decent performance on games”
I mean… you still see bad performance on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Yeah. But most games also have pc alternatives on those platforms

the tweet....
Part of me wants Nintendo to use Apple Silicon since it would run circles around that Tegra chip. But Nintendo will probably go for the upcoming Tegra version.
Nintendo+Apple sounds scary as fuck
It does, but Nintendo has said they respect Apple for their similarities.
Which is even more scary.

Also Microsoft basically gave the emulator scene a pass saying “do what you want in dev mode just not in retail mode”
Also porting most of tue major titles in backward compatiblity
Its fucking Miyamoto.
yeah.
Might not be the director of Nintendo but holy hell I wouldn’t doubt him become one.
doesnt help nintendo is being sued over loot boxes from those titles
Yeah they should’ve known.
dark patterns I always knew they were evil masterminds
oh man, if nintendo used apple chips in their next console...
that would be amazing

I cried from persona 5 emptiness while the credits were rolling, the tears couldn't stop coming
I did nothing but play it for two weeks straight, only to sleep and eat, and what an experience
Persona 5 had me tear up but it wasn't really at the ending.
when it ended, I realized that all the things I did in the game I couldn't do anymore unless I started over again, like I was on vacation for two weeks
Now I have a weird nostalgia for this game even though it's only been 5 months since I finished it
which part did you tear up on?

oh yeah, that
ah man, I think I teared up on that too

You may have seen or heard the news about @[email protected] / Valve / Nintendo from a few hours ago. If not, read e.g. https://www.pcgamer.com/nintendo-sends-valve-dmca-notice-to-block-steam-release-of-wii-emulator-dolphin/ from the amazing @[email protected].
Unfortunately pretty much everyone has been getting the legal details ...
Turns out, there was no DMCA takedown. Instead, Valve asked Nintendo if it's okay to put up Dolphin. Nintendo said no, and said that it violates the DMCA, but they didn't follow Takedown procedure, so Dolphin devs can't even contest it.
Dolphin does distribute the Wii AES-128 Common Key which is used to encrypt Wii game discs. This isn't required in theory, the tools that dump game discs could just dump decrypted images, in fact that might be easier than dumping encrypted images (the decryption is done transparently by the Wii OS)
Whether that's allowed by exception clauses for interoperability, whether that's allowed by some kind of fair use clause, whether Nintendo's broken DRM actually counts as an effective copyright protection measure, etc. -> only a lawsuit could decide that. Your guess is probably as good or as bad as anyone else's.```
"dark patterns" probably sounds pretty silly, but fwiw it is an established term in UX research for the sort of thing that tricks users into doing stuff they didn't want to do
I looked it up as well, thanks tho!
Still can't shake the image of evil villains out of my mind
tbh that's probably part of the goal
like, these patterns feel like the result of a moustache twirling UX designer
(I've never worked anywhere that did these tricks so can't speak to how it really happens)
Oof. Least we can still access it the old fashioned way
if you want to use a package manager to install Dolphin, use Scoop (on Windows) or Flatpak (on Linux) 🙂
One time I doubted Nintendo's decision and this happens
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=516OexsGlO0 this is cool
Benchmarking the nVidia Geforce GTX 1080 Ti against 13 games using an average gaming PC in 2023.
Former flagship graphics cards rarely go down as “great value”. Halo products like the x80 Ti and x90 are known for pulling out all the stops, with small matters like “materials cost” and “power consumption” at the bottom of the priorities list. By ...
Also did not realize that the 1080 ti has more Vram than my 2070 super
I would have been very happy with a 1080 ti if I had one
Hell maybe even more happy, since I would have more Vram
I still think back fondly of the 780 ti, as if having one now would still be great
I feel Valve had to ask Nintendo because if they hadn’t they themselves would of been in the firing line of Nintendo’s legal heavys

"Hey can I borrow your notes?"
"Sure just change it so it's not exactly the same."
I knew the effect was the same but not the art as well

Chirn oh
It seems there is a rumor about Sony trying to acquire CDPR, but it should be taken with a bucket of salt.
But they're direct competitors
Is Sony trying to acquire just the studio or also the DRM-Free store?
Eh not really. Sony doesnt own a pc storefront. They just partner with epic
And also release on steam
CDPR doesn't seem like a strong fit for Sony.
Sony loves DRM
Okay that's nice
The game giving you the option to skip straight to the third Act boss and giving you the item you need to get to Act 4? Nice.
@mossy flume https://www.pcgamer.com/knights-of-the-old-republic-remake-shows-faint-flickering-sign-of-life-in-publisher-report/
I think I am going to play something else besides Dyson Sphere Program today.
Go here, and see what the "play next" suggests!

Looks like it is Star Wars time for me.
Well, after it installs the prerequisites.
which one
Jedi: Fallen Order is its name.
It would have been nice if Steam told me it had install the EA app first. I would have done that when I first downloaded the game earlier this week.
That looks neat.
I did play the original ages ago though so I am going to ignore that. I need to finish Jedi Survivor and then I'll be playing Stanley Parable Deluxe, and then Persona 5

But it is a fun function. Steam kept saying I should play Shadowrun
bioshock is good
I know, I've played them all
good
Past my screenshot it was actually suggesting baldur's gate 3 next. Still waiting for it to release 1.0 first though
I need to make an account to play it? Okay then.
It's on my wishlist 😛
huh, I don't remember making a separate EA account for the Jedi games
maybe it's just been too long and it did a good enough job about not nagging me to re-login afterward
I would hope so. In principle this game shouldn't be too hard to build a remake of.
Relatively speaking, really.
One of the steps in creating the EA account is linking it to your Steam account, so probably once that was done the former is able to fade into the background.
I think i've found the EA app, especially now as EA play rather than Origin, less painful to deal with than something needing something like Epic or (perish the thought) Uplay to launch
The Steam integration probably helps.
Controller recommended for this game. I think I can manage.
Think of this as Star Wars Elden Ring
just not as brutal
Excellent. I am in it for the atmosphere and the story, so I am not going to go for difficulty.
I prefer to avoid such a strong comparison but that may have more to do with my Fromsoft experience being apparently not the norm
kinda wants a play by play reaction of THAT SCENE near the end
My experience with this genre is very limited: watching a friend play some of the Dark Souls series and a favourite YouTube channel of mine doing unedited Elden Ring play-throughs. I never actually played any of those types of games until this one.
what Jedi Fallen Order / Jedi Survivor have in common with the soulslikes is that level design tends to be very 3d Metroidvania-y, combat relies heavily on stamina and parries, and attacks are "deliberate" in the sense that you can't insta-cancel so every swing makes you vulnerable
Neat.
Lot of controls to memorise.
and for me at least, FO/JS are at the difficulty level where all of that is actually fun
learning the enemy patterns enough to tell when it's safe to attack and what to parry vs dodge feels awesome
Always good when you start with a big spaceship scroll.
i mean it's a legal requirement
I've put it at the normal difficulty level I think, and i've usually been able to one shot stuff. What killed me usually died next attempt
that was roughly my experience too (including JS so far)
so I'd expect almost anyone to be fine playing the lower "experience the story" difficulty
really wish we could have a mix of force power usage in both games
like kotor were you could use both light and dark side powers togeather
You just want more of a jedi counsellor rather than a jedi knight
The main character looks nice.
Cal Kestis is fucking hot
i just want force choke and lighting
sorry im a sucker for redheads
one of my favorite surprises about FO was how well they managed to make me feel like I was playing a "low-tier" Jedi despite a steady supply of engaging combat (heck, he can't even force push/pull for half the game)
have a vader style build
Play Star Wars: The Old Republic
Heck you might get me as a GM!
and in JS he feels significantly less low-tier which of course is exactly what we want for a sequel
how old was Cal when Order 66 happened? was he still just a padawan
Play the game, it tells you
that's actually a huge part of the story
the flashback to Order 66 day was one of my favorite sequences narratively
oo

remember kids order 66 happened cause cal didnt high five his clone commander friend

Classic Empire.
it's oddly satisfying just taking out and putting away your lightsaber at the cinematically appropriate moments
Yes.
today is Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory's 20th birthday 🙂
Happy birthday to them.
I guess slicing stormtroopers with electrostaffs is my life now.
pretty much
I'll probably fire up JS myself after I reach a stopping point in this anime
L1 spam is the traditional way to say hi in Dark Souls online multiplayer
With a two handed weapon, spamming L1 will repeatedly put your block up then lower it
Making a very silly looking animation
And since block is prioritized for the PVP aspect, the game has to transmit each and every one instead of simplifying
I can imagine two people L1 spamming and then they do the meme where they're running around the Dark Souls world with Take on Me playing
Reminder that SGDQ is running now.
#agdq2024
Excellent
With a big enough weapon it looks like you're wiggling the weapon in the air or dancing
Hey look das me in the top 3 on the server!
Nice
it's going to take a while to climb up the other two ranks because
- The Tower only opens for two days a week (and even then, you can only climb 3 floors in that time)
- I only have 4 Pilgrim characters (a squad can have 5)
- Pilgrim characters are a bitch to get so even if it was open all the time I would need some godly rolls to outpower the gradual difficulty increase.
Ranks work like this
The higher ranks have a lot of competition, and so you need immense amounts of work to climb each
The lower ones have people who didn't really want to bother competing (most people)
Well at the very least I know that Dorothy (A recent event character who I got nearly maxed out) is in the general unit pool so it's not impossible for me to get the last body i need
you can tell what camp i'm in!

I know that there are ,a separate doom topic channel ,but this is just too cool for me not to share with more people
I love brutal doom ,but my probably favorite part of it ,are friendly marines ,while playing with them I always try to save them and help them to clean earth from demonic menace ,ussually I just ran with 1 or 2 of them
But in this playthorugh I decided to save as much of them as I can
I couldnt save everyone ,but so far we are force of death
https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/916398673196367962/1112488253430431814/Screenshot_Doom_20230529_000746.png
I see.
I set the difficulty low since I prefer that to come from the planning I do in factory/logistics games, not me trying to rely on my less-than-stellar reflexes.
I think I'm on the second-to-last difficulty, like I typically choose in modern AAA games
never bad to start on easy and wait to see if the mechanics click enough to bump it up later
I usually do the default difficulty, which iiuc is one below what you're doing Cal?
...okay "Cal" is gonna get weird soon lol
Now I am imagining him (Jedi Cal) logging into Discord in between quests.
if I was putting waaaaay more time into games in general I might have replayed FO on a higher difficulty at some point, but that definitely takes more focus and consistent play sessions than I'm doing these days
I'll boot up the game quickly to check
my PC can arguably run Heretic 2 and Jedi: Fallen Order at the same time.
(almost done with Heretic 2)
Nice.
oh no
these Anchorites are philosophers
wait, now I'm using a lightsaber and a blaster at the same time?
that's illegal
Heretic 2 credits taunting me
Sword and gun is a neat combination.
yeah I'm on Jedi Master, I just checked
I am indeed on Jedi Knight
that's what Vader and Dirk Starkiller did in the original Star Wars concept art
speaking of proper focus, I just started Shattered Moon and the very first raider got the drop on me
...ok four in a row got the drop on me
how are they doing this

Just like with the SH2 remake, they're not being developed internally by Konami but in conjunction with a separate developer
MGS Delta seems like it's being developed by ''Virtuos''
I also agree with what Yong is saying, a 1:1 remake seems like the best route, I don't trust, nor would I want anyone other than Kojima and his team to re-imagine MGS like they've done with remakes like Resident Evil
actually did okay on the miniboss
☹️
no Kojima honestly makes me not have much hope :/
It's not like anyone ever expected Kojima to ever work alongside Konami again anyways
true true
on the bright side, mgs3's gameplay isn't that outdated, all they gotta do is retain all the story and dialogue, and freshen up the gameplay a tad, and bam, 10/10 remake
Virtuous Mission, eh?

hopefully they don't screw up the pc port optimization though
Oh yeah I also heard that they are reusing all the old recorded voices
Instead of newly recording
The fact that they're using the old recordings sounds to me like everything will be mostly identical to the original, hopefully
it's the same direction I hope SH2 will go with but somehow I doubt they're gonna do that
MGS3 is the one I watched the most due to one certain player, so I do have some interest
I have more of a personal connection with Peace Walker myself
What a thrill...
hopefully that one is next

no way, it's luke from streets!
(fun fact, this is the actual VA's youtube channel)
hello Luke
crossguard stance is waaaaay too slow for me
maybe if they let you run around with more than two stances at a time (what is the point of that restriction anyway?)
Two max as far as I can tell, and yeah, I found crossguard too slow
@slim thorn show off your style!
oh I don't bother with the cosmetics lol
I just do the lightsaber (and made my gun completely beskar), otherwise Cal still has his default appearance
crossguard is a godsent for bosses
Most I did was switch from blue to green.
Switched it to white myself
I didn't even have a color option
when the game made me test it crossguard seemed like it did maybe 2x damage at 1/2 speed so it feels like under any circumstances it'd be inferior to the usual single; what makes it good on bosses?
It's in "blade" rather than "color"
it makes you feel badass.
I actually can't remember exactly what made it work well
I think it's because it does so much damage per hit
well, I'm clearly about to do a boss fight so I guess I'll swap double for cross and give it another shot
oh, OH
on the boss' health single and cross do almost the same damage, but on his stamina cross did like 2/3 of the bar while single did maybe a 10th
yeah that is not in the stance description at all
dang it Yaddle, you had one chance to contribute to the lore!
I mean, she did contribute. She discovered Palpatine's identity and Count Dooku's partnership with him long before anyone else.

Revolver-looking blaster: how nice.
Revolver always be my partner

Even if the game comes out okay
Without Kojima just feels weird
Metal Gear is his child
idk, just feels weird
I don't disagree, I feel the same way with Silent Hill
but Konami is not going to let these IPs just die off
Remaking these games and staying faithful to their original vision without trying to reinvent them or reimagine them when they're not nearly qualified enough to do that and really when that isn't necessary at all since these franchises are nearly perfect as they are is the best course
I would've loved to see a remake of Silent Hill 1 personally but I guess they're chasing their biggest entries
he did make this comment though, albeit back in 2010:
Yeah and look how poor a job Hollywood has done with most long running legacy IPs in recent times….
Admittedly back in 2010 it wasn’t quite as terrible as now though
Yeah, true
keep in mind though that kojima wanted to move on from mgs ever since like, mgs2
earlier lol
He wanted it over with since MGS1
allegedly anyways
this is always a thing with creators where people quote the same thing but without any specific sources, just like the myth of Akira Toriyama wanting to end Dragonball at 'X' or 'Y' saga
I mean, it kinda makes sense when you look at the story
mgs2 kinda ends with not much else to go off of, so when they ask to make mgs3, he goes alright, we'll make a prequel instead so that we have a blank slate
and then when they ask him to come back again for mgs4, you result in the absolute spaghetti mess of a plot trying to tie something up that was never designed to in the first place
it's as if mgs2 was meant to be the end
I give a lot of shit at MGS4 for being a mess of a story but to be fair he managed to tie most loose ends as best as one could with characters and stories that were already kind of concluded
Hell, Snake by the time of the first Metal Gear Solid was already a retired soldier since the Metal Gear days
his story was already technically concluded
yeah, giving credit where credit is due
mgs4 is still a masterpiece
ending makes me cry everytim
Honestly all of the mainline games are masterpieces for me I can't really say much bad about any of them
maybe portable ops is the only one I could call ''bad'' but... it's still pretty good for a PSP title
and Peace Walker is another masterpiece for me
super unique presentation
gonna miss yoji shinkawa for sure with the remake
Yoji Shinkawa isn't part of Kojima's team to my knowledge so if he wanted he could comeback
pretty sure he's a freelancer
I heard that too, but wikipedia says otherwise
who knows, hoping he does though
wiki could be outdated
I mean the information on MGS delta is still pretty scarce until it comes out or something more is released we just won't know
Shinkawa did the art for Death Stranding
He still works with kojipro
Not that he couldn't come back, but maybe he wouldn't because he still has that working relationship
He could come back if he wanted because he's not under contract with kojima productions but he probably won't for respect towards kojima

Mgs 4 is probably the weakest main line game in mgs ,but it doesnt stop it from having some amazing moments ,my favorite final boss fight period ,and the ending that I cried the shit out of
MGS 4 Ending I love
update on dolphin
I cant wait for the new silent hill
is the same writer of umineko
and that dude is likely one of the best writers on earth
umineko is my fav piece of fiction
it is a masterpiece
Ive been thinking of giving it a try
''the new silent hill'' I assume means SH:f
there's a lot of new SH games coming, but 'f' seems like the next ''main'' one
Silent hills
I actually exited about new sh, but as everything that Konami been doing, I'll approach it with caution
yeah f

it's very divisive for sure
And you can throw mе to the wolves (Throw me to the wolves)
Cause I am undefeatable!!!!
Finally, after 5 hours trying to kill it on Grandmaster

Spawn of Doggo
Oggdo on Grandmaster in Jedi Survivor x10 ruthless
I tried to kill it 3 times
Only after I got more skills I came back
oh well I'm definitely never playing on grandmaster lol

that difficulty level would require me to be actually good at games
Oh dar
Totally forgot this existed
This shit is still so dumb to me
It's not like valve or the dolphin team are selling wii games on steam. And dolphin isn't made using Nintendo development tools or source code. So like wtf lmao
Well the letter of the American law makes bypassing some attempts at encryption a violation of the DMCA, regardless of whether emulation itself is legal
So Dolphin will have to verify with a laywer.
Not having a steam release isn't the end of the world. Dolphin's already a flatpak for steamdeck. I really wanted it for cloud saves, but it's okay.
I don't think development of the emulator is being threatened
Yeah
If Nintendo was confident they could DMCA Dolphin, they would have done so decades ago
True
Tbh a new LotR game from these people feels more like a threat.
I'm aware that games with a stealth mechanic generally make the allies magically invisible for good reason, but Bode jetpacking right over my head in plain view while I'm hiding looks really silly

daaaang it, I nearly got a clean magnadroid kill (i.e. zero damage and most of the parries)
then I forgot it's one of those two-phase enemies where the fatality animation isn't quite the end
Boi that Frog was the hardest boss I've ever fought so far, took me 1 hour to kill it and 3 hours to kill 2 of them at the same time
and that's why I'm playing on the default difficulty; only 3 enemies and paying undivided attention yet I somehow missed every single parry and dashed into the void
They should be working on their first game

I will wait until I get enough skills to kill 2 frogs at the same time
Good for you and That's okay too, people have their own way to enjoy playing some games, for me im the type of person who likes a challenge
I mean, so do I, but in most games the default difficulty already is a challenge
(plus higher difficulty is usually just more enemy health/damage, which doesn't really increase challenge so much as tedium)
In games where higher difficulty just makes enemies bullet sponges, yeah
Oh yeah i almost forgot this is also a Souls game
I like games that introduce difficulty by slowly removing forgiveness mechanics like coyote time and so on
huh, I'm failing to think of any examples of that, unless you count things like enemies/areas getting to debuff you more later on
Well XCOM 2 does this
By default it cheats in favor of the players, allowing players to crit and hit way more often than they should, but on the very highest difficulty level, it doesn't cheat at all.
Otherwise, it doesn't introduce extra enemies or makes enemies stronger
I guess the difference between debuffing you and "removing forgiveness" is semantics in a strategy/RPG game where it's all stat-based combat
Civilization V, EU4 and other Paradox games do this too, but sometimes they do add fake difficulty. They have a "base" difficulty with the training wheels removed and higher ones with fake difficulty
The metric which makes a difficulty setting good or not is ultimately how fun it is for you, but my own rule of thumb is I play on the highest difficulty setting I can reliably win (ideally just out of my comfort zone) that does not make games so long they're boring
pretty much same, for me that just happens to be most games' default setting
which I can only assume means I have extremely average reflexes
It makes sense to try the default setting the first time through, and it makes sense to not play a game again
I mean, I would turn it up if it was too easy
I still die once in a while on this setting
and I'm constantly taking avoidable hits (some because I suck, and some because for each new enemy some trial and error is required); turning those health losses into instant deaths would just be tedius
...I think this ambusher expected me to go a different direction
2nd Dagan fight was sooooo good (used 4/8 stims)
Haven't gotten to it yet, but i've been doing side missions and stuff
I'm mostly beelining the main quests until I have enough of the abilities that exploring won't get me stuck on a missing ability every few minutes
I actually just finished doing a little re-exploring early Koboh rather than warp because plot dropped me off there, but even that bumped into a missing ability
MGS4 is a lot of people's favourites especially for people who already played the other games and even more so if you binged the entire franchise
but it's still easily the weakest one and the most poorly written one just because this wasn't a franchise that really had enough stuff to drag on for this long
and it still manages to be an exciting and satisfying conclusion
oh well, it's been far too long for me to argue the point
I clearly do not understand dodging these Bedlam Smashers
half the time I dodge well before the attack and it hits me anyway, but it's never consistent
Nintendo has responded to actions it took to have the popular Dolphin emulator for GameCube and Wii taken down from Steam’s store, calling the move a way to protect its work. Why did Nintendo block the Dolphin emulator? The creators behind Dolphin, an emulator for the Nintendo Gamecube and Wii, announced over the weekend that […] The post Ninten...

oh no he has a phase two
PHASE TWO
still loving all the main bosses
that one took 6/10 stims for both phases but considering I still won on my first try I'm happy with that
I really can't wait to play this game
man
Nightsister Merrin was lowkey best girl in the first game but now she's highkey best girl
I see you've been converted to the cult of the crossguard
actually for Rayvis I found dual worked much better
crossguard was the clear winner for Dagan 2
just depends on the pace of their attacks and staggers
I guess blaster stance is the only one I'm really not using; still no idea when I would want to equip that over the others
yeah it's an odd one
This is an immensely flimsy argument. If they actually felt this way they would make their old games possible to purchase and play through normal channels. Switch Online barely qualifies for this because of its excessively limited nature.
TBH blaster stance I use mostly because the finishers are all stylish as fuck.
That's it.
Yeah the range attack to take out very weak enemies is nice but I'd be lying to you if I told you I was using it because i think it's better
yeah, I'd be trying it out if I could switch to any stance at any time, but if I have to throw out another stance to use it at all...
I feel like I just fell into Hallownest
Xen when
I'm honestly impressed the B1 battle droid banter still hasn't gotten old
like it's better than it was in the actual prequel movies
just now I got "Does this mean you're a Jedi?" after the droid was already in multiple pieces
oh, apparently stomps are unblockable but don't highlight the enemy in red like every other unblockable melee attack
welp I'm blaming that for dying to a rancor in five seconds
apparently the push ability gets super wonky when you're surrounded by too many pull/pushable objects
anyway, double magnaguard should be fun
oh that was over fast
conservation of ninjutsu is in full effect; they no longer get their second phases
they do actually
but I think it's possible to kill them without the second phase triggering
the magnaguard second phase only really occurs if you take their head
...that'd be some amazing luck if I only ever did it in this fight yet got it 2/2 times this fight
yeah
oh maybe using the crossguard did it
these caverns could really use more meditation points, I think I've died here more than the rest of the game combined and it's mostly to dumb things
That part near the bridge on ||jeddah|| lasted sooooo long without a meditation point
Unreal hasn't really updated their crash reporter in a while.
I think i've had just one crash like that so far. And one hard freeze
Not like they need to.
I had a ton of issues on launch week, but the early patches helped a ton.
Jedi Survivor actually became unplayable at one point
But I disabled raytracing and that actually fixed the issue
Was it in a wide open area with lots to see by any chance? Thats when I've notice it chugs for me
this is my first crash, I've had raytracing on since the start
uh it was in the outdoor bit of Koboh just above the whatever caverns where the bounty hunters wasted a lot of my time
Also wow this looks super desaturated without HDR.
Nope. Performance was never really a problem aside from the compilation stutter. But the space where it became unplayably crashy for a week was where I got into the hidden base with the Jedi leader.
Also the sequences before then it started crashing a ton
Btu I could get progress
The second planet
oh OUR hidden base
ok that was an extremely vague description lol
Right, but I didn't name the person
But yeah, Peach found some advice on reddit and that allowed me to keep going
That's the reason why I don't want to buy modern AAA games
I've had raytracing off since then
since this is my first and only crash after ~23 hours I probably won't change anything for now
I'd probably look like this with HDR, maybe... rough estimate.
But it looks so great and performs quite well I haven't really thought about it

Fallen Order is neat so far.
