So this is no big loss
Also this
Trusting Kotaku vs Trusting IGN
if you wanna actually highlight a stupid dumb kotaku article here you go
https://twitter.com/Kotaku/status/1653434539857833987
The Advance Wars Remake is tactically satisfying but narratively toothless: https://t.co/d8Y2JpOLn3
didn't even finish the game
they have the airport line
There was also that time with metroid dread
11/10 remaster
i want a grim reminder of the horrors of war in my cartoony Nintendo game
CuPhEaD iS tOo HaRd!!!1!1!!111!!
Isn't the remake basically the same games?
yes lol
ugh, trying to experiment with mupen64 and i can't even figure out how to get it running
Reporting on games being emulated isn't a bad thing
emulation isn't bad
Nintendo are just crybabies
I use project 64 since its simpler pk
Again, how dare they report the news, that could offend Nintendo, you have to bow graciously to the mega corporation
Project 64 is ass for Stadium though
what is Mupen64
And it was pretty impressive that Dread was already being emulated extremely well so close to the launch date
Ikr
That said
Another 64 emulator
oh ok
It was prevedibile they would get mad
Honestly Project 64 is kind of ass in general
If anything Kotaku should've been more careful and take into consideration Nintendo's fragile ego
but they didn't necessarily do anything wrong
N64 emulation is hard
N64 emulation is extremely behind
Yeah me too /hj
It's the messiest one by far
Yes I know
Yeah. Its just more amusing with how many times kotaku has covered emulation and nintendo games for it that it didnt happen sooner
It's a shame beause GCN emulation is like perfect
Even Nintendo don’t know how to emulate n64 correctly /s
But N64 emulation is like a barfy hot mess
And then they act surprised when it does happen or when they report on TOTK leaks
why the /s it's true
Not all of their N64 emulation is ass
If there's any front where Nintendo had a chance of getting ahead of fan emulators it was the N64 but that ship has kind of sailed already
Their VC releases on the Wii were solid and didn't have much issues
there's no /s here
it's pretty good on Switch but i remember being so disappointed playing SM64 on my WiiU

Sarcasm because we won’t even expect Nintendo to be best at emulating
And they've fixed a lot of problems with NSO+
Yeah. OoT on switch had a lot of issues before they patched the emulator
OoT ran well on Gamecube but MM... Had some sound issues
Yeah MM had issues
Guess I'm sticking with Project 64
Its better to run that on 64 emulator
It might be ass but at least I can get it to run
ass
Project 64 is goated; I was playing Mario 64 on the family computer running win xp
@random steppe btw thanks.
I can't ever get SM64 to look perfect on it
There's always something minor wrong with it, usually in the UI
That thing you voted in will be announced on friday who won
i bet Project 64 is what all those people who made SM64 bloopers back in 2012 used
Also the part where they were aggressively suggesting you should play Metroid Dread on an emulator instead of buying it before getting called out on it and changing the article.
Yeah
Kotaku in general is kind of a shit site
Yes
I like that one guy
Im liking gameradar more
Thank God for James Stephanie Sterling
Jims okay
James Stephanie Sterling is great
I like how they make transphobes angry simply by exisiting
Jason Schrier, I think?
i dont really listen to any games journalists
I just wish he talk about more positive news sometimes
Oh
He's a journalist but I mostly listen to his opinion podcasts
Overcast or smth like that
Not even Videogamedunkey?
I wouldn't say it's very behind, it's not even nearly as fragmented as it used to be
Yeah it's been a while since I have watched their content, it can be kind of much at times
in fact, big advances were made in the last 5 years, LLE is now viable on fast enough PCs
dunkey being the only exception
I dunno, I'd say it's pretty far behind still
Dunkey is not a journalist. He's an entertainer
and Ares is pushing for previously unseen levels of accuracy (if you want that)
I haven't looked at any "games journalism" in a long time since none of it is useful to me
I bought Vampire Survivors purely because they worked on it giving the game flavour text
Stadium and Stadium 2 have horrendous graphic problems
and yeah best choice i ever made
Vampire Survivors is Cocaine
inject it in my fuckin' VEINS BABY
daily reminder that the definitive way to play the OG GoldenEye/Perfect Dark is using an extremely inaccurate emulator 🙂
(1964GEPD, which is based on a 1964 version from 2002 – an emulator whose last release was in 2009)
Always a plus
Why?
Fun fact. Those graphics are reused on pokemon colosseum and XD
Its really noticeable if you compare them to the gen 3 models
And PBR
RAWR XD
Hell I think some Stadium models are still used as bases to this day
Pabst Blue Ribbon!
Because they are Game Freak
It's because they've been cornered into a merchandise engine
i want them to make good games tho
If the games are delayed to not be dog shit, then that delays the anime, the card games, plushies, spinoff titles, etc etc
have the patches made Scarlet and Violet more playable
have there been any patches???
Dunno. I got Violet for Christmas and havent touched it
Unfortunately, calling Kotaku bad is itself an extremely R2 dogwhistle
yeah...
Why is that?
Gamergate
I thought this was just like, common knowledge that Kotaku was the punching bag of the Internet
Oh, this goes beyond that
Gamers™️
That actually largely stems from Gamergate
Although I honestly don't even really know what Gamergate is, I avoided that mess when it was happening
I just know them for their shit articles and poor journalism
Its like 10 years old at this point pk yeah
Gamergate was 2015-2016 ish
I only browse PC Gamer actively, and TechPowerUp sometimes posts gaming news now I guess
huh, I've read/watched a bunch on Gamergate and don't recall it being focused on Kotaku (though they did come up)
Weird. I thought it 2013
Unfortunately it is still relevant to this day
I thought it was earlier too...
I only heard about it like in 2017-2018
I had way more important things in my life at the time than dumb video game drama
And yes it was earlier
Also this
Started around 2012 or so
I was in middle school!
/r/KotakuInAction was a gamergate hub
And you can draw a direct line from that to much of the current state of modern discourse
So there was definitely a relationship there
Flitter you might like this
anyway, if anyone wants to know wtf Gamergate was I can link some video essays, but for rule 2 we should probably move on from that
I still dont even know what it was aboud
But discussing that here is impossible
And since it was so long ago it's hard to care
Especially rfor something as dumb as video game bullshit lol
It can’t be explained here
If the consequences did not ring through to this day it would be easier to not care
But it’s still relevant today.
gamers are very oppressed /j
Meanwhile i need to get eye bleach
Today it evolved into a different thing from the same roots and operates in a broader scope under a different name
But again, can’t be explained here
look at this cool official Zelda art from the early 90s

This one's a bit harder. Just don't be like me and ||assume they'll give Palestine all their old land.||
Travle: A daily game, get between countries in as few guesses as possible!
(The game refreshes on local time midnight)
i want that twink obliterated
-Ganondorf probably
About time
oink
Ganon has never not been a pig
Reminds me gojira bowser
Ganondorf is the Gerudo one
yes
i think the only game Ganondorf didn't turn into Ganon was Wind Waker
I recognize that bottom one from smash
and maybe possibly TotK idk if he'll turn into Dark Beast Ganon considering we had that in BotW
Inb4 ganon turns into bowser
why would that happen?
They could make it like an eater egg or something youd have to do extra just for fun
Kotor 1 had a funny easter egg where you could instantly beat the last boss by turing him into a dancer
Because it happens in my fanfiction that I sent to Nintendo
that reminds me of that secret Far Cry 4 ending
have you see that Kratta
and Agent
Lol yes
Yeah.
it would have been cool if instead of ending right there you could team up with Pagan Min and do an alternate path or something
Thats been a trend in ubisoft far crys since that ending
5 has a similar thing and 6 you can beat the game if you just leave the country at the beginning for miami
Damn, why does every subsequent far cry installment have to be a superset of the previous?
Because ubisoft rarely inovates
RADIO TOWERS
That's actually funny
is Far Cry 5 the cult one
Yes
F
king WHAT
that one seemed cool i like the setting
Its also the one I recommend people play besides 3
the thing about Far Cry games is that they always have an awesome antagonist
like Vaas or Joseph Seed
@dapper cedar https://youtu.be/IH2tTsqL_f4
It definitely had potential
the funny thing is is that iirc Vaas isn't even the main antagonist of Far Cry 3
You had to inout a specific button combo on the controller for it to happen
He is for the first half
Then someone else the second
I played so much far cry 3 when it came out, lol
Oh I haven’t even seen the ending yet
but i guess I’ve seen the true ending now after this
did you like it
Yep
Oh I need to know if it’s possible in the Switch version
I built my computer so I could play that, csgo, and borderlands 2, basically
Yeah I was pretty into it for a long time
No idea, but that wouldn't surprise me too much
do you still play csgo
No
were you ever called a slur
Yeah
sorry that's a weird question
NOOO
:(
csgo is like synonymous with people being mean in my mind
Online shooters b like that sometimes
i feel like if i ever tried csgo i would get into a lobby, immediately be called a rude word and then break down sobbing
Also league, but I don't play league
League of Legends is a wasteland of broken dreams
So true
CS has the potential to be extremely fun, but you kinda have to build a network of friends who play regularly to get there
i see
Sounds like a ton of effort
So new Steam client dropped for me and promptly exploded at my first boot up
never change
Luckily a restart fixed it
Also speaking of clients, I'm relatively positive about EGS, for sure more than the average person, but I must say, somehow the client became so much worse in the course of a year, it's genuinely impressive.
It must be 3 times heavier than on launch, and somehow not have any more features

What’s EGS?
Epic Games Store
Epic Game Store
Steam has recently acquired this cool new bug where sometimes it decides to render only a tiny rectangle at the top left and the rest of the window is blank
It does this across all my computers
Very exciting
I'm positive because I'm all for disrupting steam and giving away free games is a pretty good way to do it, but holy hell what an incredible piece of software that client is
Ah. It’s called Epic Games Launcher, so EGL would parse better. The S was parsing as “Services” in my head
Anyway that’s just me…
And incredible in the negative sense
What’s interesting is that this isn’t the first time they’ve done this. I had that bug happen some years ago.
Can't beat free
It’s Steam, you should just assume weird bugs
Well, Steam is gonna get heavier soon. They're dropping their VGUI in favor of the web stuff. Which is probably gonna make it run like a canoe running against the river flow.
The thing where sometimes it disregards mouse input is also back
I wish I could kill the friends panel forever in Steam because it will become a solid black square on the top left of my macOS devices above all other windows even when it’s not actually open and will not go away until Steam is hard-terminated
And I never use that feature anyway
Use the beta client
it somewhat mitigates the black void that you get on the library
'somewhat' is a keyword
You can see the black line lurking there, but its not as hostile as the huge bar in the 'stable' client.
That bug has persisted for years though
WHY DOES SHUTTING DOWN STEAM NOW TAKE MORE THAN ZERO SECONDS?!
It didn’t used to do this!!!!
Absolutely GIGAFUCK Valve for their shitty engineering
No, this is both macOS and Windows
Yeah, Steam has been declining.
Shutting down the client on Windows also takes about 3-6 seconds
It used to be instant
It’s like Valve is exclusively staffed by CS interns
And anyone competent just immediately leaves
Hold on, let me reupload the photo to show something in ADDITION.
Because this takes the cake.
Oh yeah, the new Steam Beta breaks very badly for me (probably because of my integrated GPU)
I forgot they even had one
I'm using the normal client and mine looks just like that
….what.
It hasn’t been using hardware acceleration THIS ENGIRE TIME DESPITE THERE BEING A SETTING FOR IT?!?!?!?!?
Valve is genuinely the most incompetent software company
Not to mention fucking lazy as hell
Be glad that the Steam Deck has support to begin with.
It’s genuinely mind-breakingly incomprehensible that they’re not widely hated by everyone
I have never understood the blind cult-like love for them despite their idiocy and monopoly
And the fact that they just don’t provide any value
Because valve was the first to push online launcher drm
But also make it the less intrusive somehow
Being the first doesn’t mean anything if your product is terrible
I know you hate them right now for all this, but let me tell you something...
GOG Galaxy is downright broken on macOS, and there is still no Linux client even though its a free-drm site. Which ironically enough Galaxy acts as a DRM by itself if it can't connect to the servers.
Being good is what matters
I only use gog for games not sold on steam
If you try to launch Galaxy without connectivity, you can not uninstall anything or play.
But somehow the cult has managed to brainwash itself into being actively hostile to improvements or alternatives, again for unthinkable reasons
Or if the version is better optimized such as kotor
Ironically this is more effort to improve by valve than most of 2010s
I wish someone would buy Valve and actually give them a management structure and a fucking purpose
They’ve been wholly aimless since they launched their store
That wont happen due to antitrust issues
Instead they’re a brain parasite
If microsoft cant get activision they definitely arnt going to get valve
https://zirconstudios.bandcamp.com/track/the-path-to-mastery-job-trials This song is so good
Nice flitter
Sometimes I wonder if they keep their standards low intentionally just in case they need to ramp up upon the threat of a potential competitor
The problem is. They’ve had potential competitors
Yeah and the mob screamed them down
They said fuck the game devs and fuck the consumer, we want Valve
This looks okay, but why is there like a huge gap?
Because deviant
It just works
They do 2fa emails

see above ma
origin
Three?
EA has not released their new client for macOS yet
Origin stays
Oh okay
I NEED TO SHOW THIS
I guess all the competent people go to FAANG companies
Also with valve. Most of the teams just focuses on keeping steam up nowadays
Counter strike 2 is probably the biggest effort to modernize something since alyx
GOG drops three binaries that show on launchpad, two of them are system related. They use a python script to update their entire software.
It doesn’t help that being a software engineer for a game studio or gaming company will see you making 30-70% less than if you were in an equivalent position at a FAANG company
Oh man ma
We reached peak microtransactions
Paying to change audio files

“Microsoft is not buying us, we should make our own money” /j
Welcome friends, Welcome to Origin Hell.
Isn't origin dead, at long last?
macOS users have to use Origin to access their games.
Another reason to use Windows
Honestly the best reason I've heard so far
Heh
This is fucking EA's fault, but whatever.
The most puzzling part yet? The Sims 4 runs on M1 now.
Try fucking explaining to someone that they need to use Origin, an Intel app to run an M1 game.
Does that mean there's no way to run the M1 version of the Sims?
Oh
They never updated Origin to give the M1 version, did they…
what the gog doing?
So if you have all your expansions through Origin/EA and not Steam, you’re fucked?
Because they didn’t actually list Sims 4 on Steam until last year or 2021
Steam also doesn’t have an M1 client, by the way
It relies on Rosetta 2 too
Of course! Why spend money on a platform that has a walled garden if you can spend that money on another operating system that is trying really hard not to look like a walled garden?
I mean cmon.

Soon it'll all be on the Microsoft Store.
Conspiracy aside, let me nuke Origin from my Mac because its still memory leaking.
I mean does Origin dispense the M1 version of the Sims 4?
Or is that Steam exclusive?
I assume they do.
Hm, I’ll have to check then
IF they don't, then they ripped off all their customers.
Yeah the base game is F2P now
No, look to the right.
Ahh
Where da apple?
Yeah
Right
They excluded that
Forgot about that
So it’s Origin only
Plot twist!
Tbf there are some steam games that run on mac without noting so
That really shouldn't be an excuse though.
That's just lazyness.
Consistency! Windows 10 logo on the Steam client, vs Windows 11 logo on the Steam store page.
Meh, I'm nitpicking now.
I'm glad others have problems with steam
It's validating, because when I complain about Steam it's always met with Bizarre cult like praise and dismissal of my issues
It's important to advocate for DRM-Free games so nobody has to suffer from launcher problems
Sims 4 is like $600 with all the dlc
I've seen this happened to me as well.
There is some sort of effect.
The Steam cult is very real
They're as bad as certain Nintendo fans
1054 dollars and 35 cents
It'll never be as good as the Sims 3.
Thats a house payment
Gotta ensure your favourite multi-billion dollar company maintains their monopoly on PC video game distribution
Not a dlc cost
I like the Sims 3 a lot, but the Sims 4 is better than it in a lot of aspects
Everyone just wants a monopoly.
In general I tend to always have problems with Steam
Primarily performance and focus
So I avoid using it whenever I can
I mean, most of us played the damned board game. It's encouraged to have monopolies.
Wasn't the monopoly board game designed to discourage monopolies?
Yes
Well people don't use the original rules
That's so true.
But the thing about having a monopoly in monopoly is that you destroy everyone else
The original rules are designed to make the game short and allow one player to snowball very quickly
I feel like the message is still quite clear
Stuff like putting a property on auction when you can't afford to buy it
I honestly don't think I've ever played a proper game of Monopoly before
I played digital monopoly and that used the actual rules, but it's not as fun without family
The rules we had is that if someone bankrupted, we just filed them a 'Chapter 11' but I shouldn't go that far lol.
Never been a board game person
Wouldn’t that make the game last literally forever
They could only do it once.
So it was like one extra life.
It for sure as hell made it twice as longer.
What monopoly needs: to be even longer
New rule in monopoly
I mean when you are kids, you aren't really thinking of playing the game to understand concepts. You're playing to win.
You buy the federal reserve and then print your money
If I’m playing to win I’m not forgiving the debts of my competitors
Well how will Johnny Test stop whining about losing too early?
Then again, we didn't have internet back then.
Have you tried rerunning the installer?
Yep.
I even used AppCleaner
Also, I found this amazing article from the hard-drive... but I'm debating if I should put it on science & tech or here.
Ehh, I think this is more of a general gaming thing. On a second thought, it does have obscure references so it goes to the nerds. :v
I do love that everyone ignores the proper rules which causes this to happen
And further, miss the point of the game
I didn't even know we had a rating authority
And they're banning FFXVI?
One hell of a way to learn about your rating authority existence
I'm guessing it has certain implications regarding Islam or a similar representation of it within the game (religion and the deconstruction/criticism of it is no stranger to FF games). That's usually the main reason why a game would be banned in an Arabic country.
Does the game actually do that? That'd make sense
aren't a lot of the summons named after actual deities?
It's been a thing in FF for a while
Yes but the other games that have Shiva and Ifrit and such are not banned
Yeah, Final Fantasy has always had you fighting some kind of deity that's based off of real-world deities, as well as criticizing organized religion and the concept of gods as a whole.
(15 and 16 are though)
Shiva and Ifrit are Islam?
At the moment we don't know why they banned this particular entry.
Shiva is Hinduism
No, Shiva is a shaivist one and Ifrit is just an Arabic word for an evil djinn
Ifrit, also spelled as efreet, afrit, and afreet (Arabic: ʿifrīt: عفريت, plural ʿafārīt: عفاريت), is a powerful type of demon in Islamic theology. The afarit are often associated with the underworld and identified with the spirits of the dead, and have been compared to evil geniī loci in European culture. In Quran, hadith, and Mi'raj narrations ...
he looks scary
Final Fantasy Tactics was actually notorious in some areas for it. Christian/Catholic parents especially disliked it at the time because it deconstructed the Christian faith.
Fair.
i think uh
My mom hated Pokemon because she thought they were demons. No joke.
Ocarina of Time's fire temple had an Islamic prayer/chant or something and then they patched it out in the next issue of cartridges
That was all of México during the Pokémon boom
Oh yeah, playground rumor when I was little was that Pokémon was a Zionist conspiracy
It's not unique
Yeah
yes i also heard the Pokémon is demonic thing
My parents disliked Pokémon due to ethical concerns around capturing and battling creatures.
And the family friend who lived with my parents (but is thankfully moving out now) absolutely HATES MLP, saying that it taught kids witchcraft and that it brainwashed them into being godless little imps.

That's a bit more reasonable
Your parents were PETA?
They liked that it made me think about strategy though
i think it was just because Pokémon was popular
I mean, this is actually a somewhat understandable criticism, in their defense, lol.
I feel like there is some daylight between “PETA” and “animal fighting is morally dubious”
I ran into a bunch of people who were angry about Pokémon when growing up because it was somehow considered demonic witchcraft.
Pokémon cards were actually explicitly banned in Christian schools in Texas because of this
I agree with my parents, as it happens.
JRR Tolkien's writings are demonic we must burn them
Having one could've gotten you expelled.
Everything is demonic witchcraft at this point. Even science and technology.
Not that they ever stopped me playing Pokémon
True but PETA is the primary group to complain about Pokémon specifically
I guess that makes sense but I have never heard of it
''oh this looks cool, what's it about?''
''you stuff these cool animals into miniature balls and force them to battle to the death with other animals!
''
''
''
Similar hysteria when the Harry Potter books became popular. Misguided moral panic and resulted in them getting banned or somesuch.
But I didn't once hear any concerns about the glorification of capturing and battling animals until the 2010s.
In fairness Harry Potter undeniably involved a lot of witchcraft
"They have magic in them, and magic is against God, and therefore Lord of the Rings is demonic and must be purged from this world!" --- said all the pearl-clutchers
Never mind that much of the magic being used by Gandalf in the books and the movie is given to him by what is essentially Middle-Earth's version of God, which by all definitions makes it pure and holy. :P
Yeah, but it wasn't teaching you witchcraft, as many claimed.
wasn't it?
And thus why the moral panic was a thing
there are a lot of classes involved throughout all of Harry Potter...
it's not real magic but it's still kinda teaching you, or at least teaching Harry about it
idk what you guys are complaining about. THey're doing you a favor. FF15 was the final fantasy
it's over, they've finally found the last one
Again:
And the family friend who lived with my parents (but is thankfully moving out now) absolutely HATES MLP, saying that it taught kids witchcraft and that it brainwashed them into being godless little imps.
I have watched MLP many times. Never once did it teach any kids how to do spells.
It's not teaching you, the reader, how to cast nonexistent magic necessary to summon the Christian devil.
Final Final Fantasy
My parents definitely had this concern in the nineties
Though I’m pretty sure they derived it themselves
Yep. Same mindless hysteria.
I think there was a thing about that when pokemon first became popular
They are not generally much for the Hysteria News. And also are not in America.
briefly
Are you saying that I can't kill people by shouting Avada Kedavra?
Yep. See #1032716748887179434 message
Oh yeah, the Satanic Panic is making a return for D&D too.
Reminder: demons and devils are enemies in D&D, and the game explicitly tells you that they are nobody's friends except cultists', and that they should be slain on sight.
I had a friend who was collecting the gen 1 cards, then his aunt found them, freaked out and shredded them all.
well to be fair, there was a pokemon with spoons, the most satanic of food eaty sticks
Yu-gi-oh was in the bible so that's cool
Well American YGO is like ultra censored but still
He's the friend I played YGO against a bunch

The cards are still very much the sort of content you would expect to trigger them, censored or not
who can remember the classic book of the bible, Yugi 3:14 where Jesus battles satan with his sick deck
in Beyblade Moses parted the Red Sea with a Beyblade
Then sent him to the Shadow Realm
Jesus "My dad's deck has no uselss cards!"
"You fool," Jesus said, "I am without sin! you've just activated my trap card!!!!!"
"You fool!" Satan cried back. "I have 70 alternative accounts!"
''You fool'' said Jesus ''unlike you I've accepted the love of God in my life''
Jesus then proceeded to blast Yami into the shadow realm with the unyielding power of Exodia
Jesus activated IP Ban!
that'll teach him to have that ridiculous hairstyle
long haired freaky people need not apply
And on the 7th day, Jesus brought the gift of the raddest hair gel.
Hes just mad harambe wasnt added a companion npc
This conversation is so blasphemous and I'm loving every bit of it.

yikes
And Reggie doesn't even work in Nintendo anymore
He has nonetheless embraced the fact that he's a living meme and he has done it so well
I guess because of the quote tweet, that guy deleted their account.
when fucking Reggie QRT's you you know it's over
you have to delete your entire existence, buy a new identity
They will find you.
they're going to find you
Ehh, I don't find that funny. Didn't seem like they posted that directly to Nintendo it seems, so its probably just Reggie stumbling upon it because of the algorithm, causing this to occur in the process.
Also, I've been spoiled already with the replies on Reggie's tweet.
So that's cool.
Yeah, that would be rather inevitable, unfortunately. Recall that the ROM leaked two days ago. And given it's a high profile game, people will maliciously post spoilers everywhere they can for the sole purpose of pissing people off.
Yep.
And honestly, the guy just took a photo of the game's icon.
Basically not even a spoiler.
Yep
Regardless, I'm sure the game will sell a lot... even with leaks.
Verily.
someone tagged like, every Nintendo person they could in the replies
real snitch behavior :(
Or maybe that's just their way of bragging to them that it leaked.
Some people do that too.
"haha we got it for free before the release date fuck you"
But yeah, it'll sell about as well as BotW I'd wager.
If not better than BotW if they make it a launch title for the Switch successor with enhancements.
(If they don't do that then what is Nintendo even doing???)
It's still sixty bucks.
You're assuming it'll ever get cut. It's a Nintendo game. It won't.
Games do not actually become worth less over time
If you want it cheaper, get it used from GameStop.
BotW aka the best game ever made
I don't even trust used copies by the mere fact Nintendo can flag copies that were used on a modded Switch.
I don't know how they do it but its a huge risk.
welp im never buying a used Switch game
Right?
Each cartridge does have it's own unique ID
i buy all my games digitally anyway
And those IDs do get tied to your Nintendo account
Also going into TotK without playing BotW seems very likely to be confusing.
So does Nintendo know when you shared that copy to someone?
They collect a lot less data if you’re subject to the GDPR
yes i'd at least look up some BotW story stuff before jumping into TotK, unless you already have in which case idk
But otherwise definitely yes
yIkEs
I think some substantial experience with the combat and gameplay may also be wise
And weirdo button layout
I guess in theory, but the only thing that they're actively looking for as far as anyone knows is whether your account got flagged for modding. If so, all associated cartridges get flagged too. They do this as a way to deal with ban evasions and they accept the risks of that.
But yes, they do know when it's shared to another console
I have recently been reminded that playing BotW is an exercise in “wow none of the buttons do what I think they should”
Heh yep
the actual game file is not unique to a specific cart
The Switch's button layout is funky
Each cart does have a unique ID though.
And that ID gets tied.
Nobody is talking about game files, its the identification that the game cartridge provides.
They gave us button setting, but iirc you have to change the entire machine's setting
You do
Correct
I had A/B and X/Y swapped for a while
For reference this just makes the BotW mappings even more incoherent
Well, at least Nintendo knows that my console can't be hacked. So rest easy Nintendo.
An easy way to demonstrate this: Nintendo gives you coins for your My Nintendo account when you register your cart that you have inserted. It uses that ID as to guarantee it's a one-time use.
Once you do that, no other Nintendo account can claim those coins
people have a problem with the Switch button layout??? it's the same as the WiiU's
That ID is used for many things.
I find that feature absolutely terrible, if the game is older than a year... you can't earn the coins lmao.
and DS
Only digital works.
and snes
yeah!
It's counter to what Microsoft and Sony standardized on.
oh
I do have a problem with the Switch’s button layout because it is different to literally everything else
well i actually think Xbox and PlayStations button layouts are weird
But I have more problem with BotW which is its own additional brand of nonsense
Thus demonstrating the point.
what point

The one we are currently discussing.
But yeah, BotW does map oddly
It takes some work to get used to it
There’s a bonus wrench in this: until the PS5, the PlayStation layout was partially region-dependent, and was Nintendo-like in Japan
i lost track of the conversation
Then it takes some work to adjust back
The buttons weren’t in different places, but O was confirm and X was cancel
As a result of this I'll have to focus exclusively on TotK until I'm done with it before I resume my other games, otherwise my muscle memory will be totally fucked and I can't play anything until I refocus it again.
They have since unified it with rest-of-world.
wait how have Xbox and PlayStation standarised controllers when Nintendo has had this button layout since the SNES
I find O confirm to be more intuitive, maybe just because I'm not western
Context of what A and B and X and Y do and where they're located
Nintendo swaps them
They stick with their historical layouts
Everyone else dropped old layouts and have since gone with a fairly universal control scheme with respect to physical button locations and what they actually do.
Technically they were there first but given that it is now Nintendo vs Xbox, PlayStation, PC, and all the weird niche things
It just feels wrong to have the red button be confirm
Nintendo is the weird one here
Yep
(PlayStation has different labels but the positions are the same as everyone except Nintendo)
It fucked with me when I played Metroid Dread
"The circle and X represent 'yes' or 'no' decision-making and I made them red and blue respectively."
But BotW is especially a bit odd
Jump on X
Interestingly enough, the original designer of dualshock thought O as confirm from the very beginning
The top button is jump, which is counter to how anyone else does it
Just one example
x
y
a
b
"Press circle to hack"
button
Yep
i see no issues
Yes, because in Japanese culture O is positive, X is negative.
The swap made no sense
(It was done for western audiences, IIRC)
I am also very familiar with such concept, that's probably why I see it intuitive
Yep
O means nothing over here, though
It's intuitive to me as well. It's part of why it took me literal years to get used to the PS controllers
o means ok
in most Japanese versions of games, the O is the confirm and X is the 'cancel' or 'go back' button
Yes, we have now looped the conversation.
I was exposed to that symbolism when I was really young, like through Pokémon, so that's part of why I understand it as such
Confirm and cancel were swapped in Japan to match the western mappings with the launch of the PS5
It's interesting, X means no for me. O means okay for me. Yet sometimes I get it confused thinking X is go and O is stop.
These button swaps never help I swear.
So now it’s X = confirm and O = cancel everywhere
I honestly would say "Nintendo is acting weird, it's not following standardized thing" is not really a good argument
The "standard" is way too arbitrary
That doesn’t make it not the effective standard
It is entirely arbitrary, to be sure
And it is also incredibly confusing to be presented with something that does not follow it
And yet it's the most popular method that we've landed on collectively
Exactly.
A large part of it is explicitly to avoid confusion.
Being unable to understand the controls is one of the top reasons why people stop playing games
Well lets make everyone get more confused by introducing custom controllers!
Y = Blue = X ?
B = Red = O?
A = Green = Triangle?
X = Purple = Square?
I mean, yes, they have.
And thus I have never seen the "western" control scheme as "standard"
As mentioned here
The thing is, I thought that swap happened in Japan back in the PS3 era.
And even then, after the announcement of "X confirm", now Japanese people are extremely confused
Yep.
In the west, the western mappings are, shockingly, standard. As Sony demonstrated for years you can localise these things (though they have since given up, so that is also interesting)
It was even more confusing in Korea because we use mixed materials, some come from Japan some come from America
Microsoft basically landed on it first try and everyone followed suit.
For example, PS2 control used X confirm
PSP and PS3 used O confirm

For me I never really thought X-confirm scheme as "standard way"
US copies of metal gear solid had the O is confirm thing
Well it is standard over here 😄
So I feel very awkward when people say "Nintendo is not catching up correctly"
The trick is to not be so tied up with symbol meaning, but gamepad physical location meaning. This is where Nintendo is strange.
In any case, which arrangement is correct is largely not the point. The point is that Nintendo being different to literally everyone else is a significant impediment to actually using Nintendo consoles.
I guess we can say that after PS5
Indeed, it becomes an accessibility issue.
I've never felt that way
ears begin to ring
dear god just what's a controller anymore, X Z r1 R3 🧠 ⚡
... C STICK!
So it is yet again Sony deciding the market, huh
Long before the PS5 in the West. Where I am, and is the context about which I am talking.
I feel the only reason that happened was because PlayStation’s headquarters was moved to California. Note that Nintendo still uses the old button layout (A is where O is on a PlayStation controller after all) worldwide. I believe Asian markets were for a time up in arms over the change on PS5.
Indeed this was a thing long before the PS5
Behold, the juggernaut.
Well then you can't argue that it was even a "global standard". It was just a western standard, and Nintendo isn't even a western company.
Maybe after PS5 decision they may think about changing.
I never said anything about global standards.
^^^^
You were saying as if Nintendo is acting weird.
this is very silly lol
The PS1 here used X to confirm, IIRC. So still Sony deciding the market but they did that in 1995. And then Microsoft affirmed it in 2001.
It's not Nintendo being weird, it's just people being different in different region.
Sony localized control schemes. Nintendo did not.
Sony was weirdly having double-control scheme

My god, you're getting weirdly defensive about an accessibility complaint.
Actually depends on the game. Ridge Racer Type 4 used O for confirm worldwide.
I dunno what's happening anymore, but I had fun just remembering the N64 controller.
N64 controller was a weird one for sure
Just what is the optimal way of holding it?
Is it an accessibility problem if it can be solved by just learning/ getting used to another control scheme?
Depends on the game
There's no one answer. It's specifically designed for two ways of holding it.
Because they weren't sure if the joystick would catch on
I do understand people getting confused. What I don't understand is that blaming Nintendo for "not following arbitrary standard built by others"
Muscle memory can be difficult to rework. As mentioned.
I think it was also so the controller would work with any 2D games the N64 would end up getting, not that it had many as it pushed 3D titles pretty hard
"Just git gud" is not a valid answer
It's one button placement switched with its neighbor
Well, two. X and Y are also swapped.
yeah but this is about confirm/back
But yes, it is? And that’s confusing.
Localized control can be even worse, and I have been living through exactly that.
It confuses me when I play switch games
That is what I fucking said Jesus fucking Christ.
And that's not Nintendo's fault.
just learn it
Are none of you even reading this
ok, this is just me talking, but this past October i had the opportunity to play on a Ps4 for a bit. mind, ive played Nintendo consoles my whole life, and it took, hmm, about 5 minutes to get used to the button layout
and then it stops being confusing
Heaven forbid I be fucking confused by the one fucking game I play per decade that is completely different to everything else
Like, genuinely fuck you.
ok maybe we should move on, people are getting a little heated
Nintendo has always had the rightmost button as confirm dating back to the Famicom.
I never said you can't be confused or you are wrong to be confused
I'm just saying that you can't blame Nintendo for having that control scheme, which was the very standard in their country until very recently and also they have been using for decades.
I don't have the patience to deal with this ableist shit.
oke let's move on maybe
hey check it out it's Link but a horse
https://manebooru.art/images/4026293?
A sword fit for a pone

I am very displeased by this. We have banned people for saying things like this. In the future please refrain from this. There are other ways to sort it out.
“It’s an accessibility issue”
“Sounds like you should git gud”
Right, because that among a myriad of such ableist nonsense shouldn’t make me angry when it’s directed at both me and my fiancée simultaneously and a chat that should know better is less than indifferent.
I know my error.
But don’t pretend it’s out of nowhere.
I understand that, but we can't have people saying such things in chat. If you can't discourse without going too far, then step away. I am not saying you can't be upset.
I also believe we said to move on from the topic @fresh bane
Not sure you do but okay.
So I uhh, finally finished Super Mario Galaxy… for the first time.
That's one more time than I've finished it!
Yeah, I need to collect the purple coins now which have been uh… rage inducing to say the least. My wrist hurts just by moving the pro controller.
Otherwise, its a fun game but I do feel like the purple coin section was quite spicy, then again I have Mario Run on the iPhone with the same issue. lol
This scene is cool as heck though, minus the odd voice acting. Spoilers for Galaxy, lol.
Most of my playing was just watching a friend play and sometimes I played the little brother mode and was the hat
Oh yeah, the helper mode.
Its interesting for sure, but what an odd way to play lmao.
So yeah, finished SM64 for the first time, finished SMG1 for the first time, and now I have to figure out... sunshine...
(Well technically I did finish sm64ds but its quite different tbh)
I am not good at platformers, they take way more time for me to get good enough to not die to dumb user error
which is why i'm rather surprised at how well i seem to be doing in hollow knight
I need to finish hollow knight.
I was enjoying it a lot, and then I suddenly lost interest.
if i never finish it i can still listen to that soundtrack forever
what a masterpiece
Oh wait I remember, it was that boss fight with ||the two bugs||
I don't remember the names, oof.
I have found Hollow Knight a bit annoying though, while its metroid-like game... it really feels quite hollow in the world. Like I would be walking to multiple zones only to discover I really have to fight that boss or I can't progress further.
I would expect getting a bit more upgrades would be part of the focus, like how Metroid does it. Some of those upgrades do improve your ability to fight, so I expected something similar. Little did I know that even with upgrades, you're still gonna die a lot.
I guess I should have expected that considering the game gets compared to Dark Souls.
so far i've only hit one real bottleneck, when i missed a path to a new zone before i had a certain ability that would access the everything
I nearly soft locked myself by getting into a boss with lower health than usual, which sure you can still beat it... but my god you have to know the collision box.
Otherwise, prepare to die.
A rare instance in which Valve makes a good decision
Yeah, it got rather spammy in a lot of cases
i suppose this means the developers have to make their 2 main videos really count
Indeed. Provides a fair incentive while balancing the user experience as well.
which i like because i don't have to hunt through a bunch of separate videos to get an idea of the gameplay when i'm deciding on a purchase
and then there's some games that even with a complete video of the gameplay it's still like wtf is this looking at you, Mirror Moon EP
Mirror Moon is weird
it's like if synthwave was a dystopian minimalist puzzle game
About fucking time. Nothing wrong with a lot of videos, but at least it is a new standard.
To Valve's thing, not synthwave hellscapes.
they still can put up a bunch of videos, just only 2 are on the left side, the rest are on the right where you have to scroll over to find
I'm debating if I should buy Super Mario 3D World or get the Tunic Manual.
And that'll work for me. Surprised that they haven't put a hard limit yet, but not too many have what could be a youtube channel's worth of videos.
3D World is great
Didn't you say you were doing Sunshine next?
Its halfway done.
Sunshine though is way more difficult that I ever thought it would be, harder than SMW and SMG1.
I love Super Mario World.
3D world is one of my favorites.
I found the colors to be the same.
Then again I did dump the rom.
The SP screen needs replacement.
Audio is subjective for me at least, I love the 'Let's a Go!'
don't dump the rom
lol
I really can't tell the difference.
although I do personally dislike the voice samples
I need a video, let me look up an example.
ooohh, I see what you mean.
The colors look less strong because they were redesigned to compensate for the lack of backlight.
yep
I mean, the fact I couldn't tell pretty much says it all.
it's easy to not notice because SMW is so good
I'll admit, music is worse.
But the visuals don't bother me.
So it really could have been worse.
The SNES one looks like just a Green Mario while the right one has Luigi properly shaped. The colors on the left in this level look a bit too blueish and stretched, while the right looks fine.
This is one level though, other levels do have different contrasts.
Oh yeah I prefer the left one in this case, way darker and more to the point.
You can play it however you want, just letting you know what was lost
Oh yeah I'm actually thankful you've told me this.
Game is great regardless
I never would have known lmao.
super kaizo world
But yeah, I guess you can now play SMW on the go with the online thing... but I guess I just have nostalgia for the GBA port.
I've made some (terrible) SMW rom hacks, so I'm decently familiar
The Sharp L35902 had more capabilities than the SNES’ S-SMP though
Not sure what you’re going on about there.
In every example of ports, the SNES version has better audio. Mario, FF, aLttP
I mean you can just listen to a GBA game. It's clear as day.
Hm, I could buy that if the audio wasn't remastered properly.
It was modified in some ports to take advantage of the additional channels
Listen to them back to back if you don't believe me
But I do recall noticing the two sounding different from memory when casually playing on the SNES some years later
Never did a direct comparison
Side by side comparison between the Game Boy Advance and the Super Nintendo versions of the game Super Mario World.

I've been playing/replaying through the numbered Final Fantasy games in order. I'm on X now, and it's really good! I never got past the third Seymour fight as a kid :V
Nice!
My favorite part of Final Fantasy X is the postgame so it's good you're getting there
FFX is so crazy good

Are the dark aeons worth doing? I'm probably not going to fight Penance
They are a hassle so I recommend a bit of patience or a guide
Mother 2
Holy hell M1+2 has such awful audio
Yeah the fanbase would probably burn me at the stake for saying this but I don’t get all the fuss over Earthbound, it’s not a good looking game by SNES standards, it can be a bit confusing to navigate, the story is weird and while that and the setting can make for interesting ideas and moments it never gelled together for me. The gameplay is what makes me scratch my head though, I could just never shake off the thought of “that’s it?” throughout.
it gets points for being a dark/unusual game by Nintendo standards
Back when nintendo took risks
Instead of the same zelda/mario game’s while occasionally doing another series
uh. botw seemed like a fairly significant departure
"back when Nintendo took risks" lmao somehow forgetting how different BotW and Odyssey were compared to previous games
I can't wait for ExciteBike and Wave Race to be part of the Switch 2 lineup
Wave Race was so cool
so true
Technically BotW was a 3D reimagining of the original Zelda on NES with its open-ended design
I don't think EB is particularly dark, more so unusual
yes but BotW being like that after about 20ish years of the standard Zelda formula was super different
Was it a reimagining or did it merely take inspiration from it
more inspiration
M3 is where it hits that harder especially with its anti capitalism themes
There still mario and zelda games
and???
When have they not done well
The Virtual Boy and Wii U?
Nintendo’s biggest mistake with Mario and Zelda was handing the rights over to Philips for the CDi
those are garbage games like, objectively
Oh i know
I say that but Hotel Mario was actually not a horrible game, it was the cutscenes that made that infamous
especially if playing on original hardware because they run at like 2 fps

ah yes, the characters from the Ship of Harkinian Directs
Oh god your right
This is great
anything to avoid paying real artists

Is f-zero GX old enough to drink in the US?
I downloaded Redfall with gamepass, the game asked me to make an account, I said no, the game said I can't play it, I uninstalled the game. 🧛♀️

An online team game needs an online account. Shocking.
That kinda makes me sad
Well sometimes online games use your platform's account instead
Really they should just have made cod its own thing and forced activison to start using its own ips
No, but it can drink here in the UK
I mean if we want a marriage made in hell why not have Activision Blizzard merge with EA >_>
Hot take, ignoring that Redfall is bad, having the user make an account is really the only good way to make a multiplayer game be cross platform.
And it's good when games are multiplatform
Im not opposed to this
Halo mcc had us do that and no one complained
Can confiirm, love being able to play Honkai: Star Rail on my PC and then take it with me on my mobile phone
Why can't Halo MCC use my Microsoft account?
Like, how else is the guy that got it with game pass going to play with the guy from steam
That would be multiplatform
Either way someone has to make an account
You an automatic game account for everyone when they use their Nintendo Switch Online account or their Epic Games account to log in.
This way they don't have to make a new account. It's automatically done for them
Yeah the problem is that, if those 2 players have to play together, those 2 accounts have to talk to each other
It does?
Especially if they want to add each other as friends
I have to sign into it when i play it
No, what I mean is that regardless of which account you used originally, you now have a Game-specific account without needing to make one, and you can now use it to do everything you would need a separate account for
