Actually, no. I try to keep my characters balanced in terms of both defense and offense when I begin a game, so that they can survive. And then when I get towards the mid-game, after I've gotten used to each character and know their strengths and weaknesses, I start to specialize with skills and either damage or tankiness.
By late-game, I've got tons of heavy-hitting tanks, mages that are reinforced glass cannons that can survive a few hits and still deal their best damage, and archers that can pinpoint targets and snipe from afar.

Recently I've been replaying FF8, and it's incredible how much better you can do knowing the mechanics ahead of time:
1- Turning enemies into cards gives you AP, allowing your GFs to become stronger, without giving you XP, so enemies won't scale.
2- You can use the cards and abuse the game mechanics to get the "All" rule and take every card an opponent has in triple triad.
3- You can convert the cards to spells and items, which can then be junctioned to your stats to max them out even at very low levels.

It's great, deservedly one of the classics of that video game era, but it's in line with the rest as for quality while by the reaction of a lot of people, you'd expect it'd be the best one by a lot

I'm not huge into Final Fantasy, I only really played Crisis Core to completion as my first ever FF game and I never finished FF4, but I definitely feel what you guys are saying and it's really simple to explain, FF7 is just incredibly overrated not because it's bad and people think it's good, it's good, really good, it's just that there's other really good FF games out there too, and it feels like shit when only FF7 gets all the glory just becuase people know that one more

It would be interesting to do a deep dive and find out exactly why FF7 seems to have clicked the most with more people, whether it's because people just like that one specific thing FF7 did more or if there's any other reasons, but I don't think anyone wants to get into that right now and it's not really that important anyways not at this point in history
