sorry guys but id pay 200 for Zelda 👴
You're the reason prices keep going up
i'd pay a solid 37 p
while i do understand the gaming cost frustration, usually nintendo games stay high priced because they're worth that price even decades later
its a massive game the company has spent 6 years on and im going to get way more than 70 dollars out of it
BIG games shouldnt cost what they did in 1994
but the downside is nintendo will also charge 70 dollars for their ass games if theres no backlash
also true
its a weird balance a lot of people are fine with cheaper games with a shit tonne of dlcs making them more expensive for the same amount, rimworld is like 100 quid all dlcs nowdays
yeah but rimworld is more than worth it
unlike most games, rimworlds DLCs are full expansions
I don't think people would really want to pay the 'true cost' of a game if it was freed from the $70 price point
because it would almost certainly go up, not down
$70 for a new AAA game feels fair in the current US market. Everything's getting more expensive
Like, if you account for inflation that's cheaper than games were in 2010
2010?
People were paying 60 dollars for games in the 90s
Maybe even the 80s! (I wasnt alive)
Yeah but that's before I was born so it doesn't feel real
i would rather pay £100 for a nintendo game than £60 for an EA game with singleplayer microtransactions
yeah but each game is being sold to way more people
Back then the higher price point was justified because the majority of the cost of a game was in the supply chain, delivering and selling an expensive physical product
thats not an excuse for games to go that high in price mind
Nowadays the market is bigger, allowing for more people to cover the development cost, AND the delivery cost of the games is comparatively negligible as digital games.
Yeah but ya gotta spend 10 million on marketing so y'know
Marketing does pay off more than it costs in extra sales. It's a revenue center, rather than a cost center
I was joking, but yeah
Either way, I have too many games that I haven't even played yet to worry about the cost of new games
My favorite research in EU4, https://i.imgur.com/m3JhbiL.png
Allows for the imperialism casus belli, allowing you to declare war on literally anyone for no good cause
And then whenever it suits you, you can make client states (like what happened in Napoleonic times)
For every other war you have to have a justification, no matter how flimsy. For Imperialism it's "Fuck you, that's why." https://i.imgur.com/H9CYXJw.png
The unfortunate reality is that despite Nintendo's anti consumer practices or bad releases whether it be a game that is underwhelming or simply bad, and despite a subscription service that is not worth the price, people still keep throwing money at Nintendo
So they literally have no reason to change their ways at all because they're still successful

At the end of the day people are gonna get what they get and I can't put all the blame on Nintendo when people can't stop themselves from buying things and throwing more money at them
Of course you can. It's easier to put the blame on Nintendo because there's only one or two of it
i think NSO is worth it
my dad thinks every video game console is a nintendo
Onosa what are your Nintendo Direct predictions
Mother 3
whoa!
It's gonna happen guys
Of course I can but I won't, and even then ''Nintendo'' is such a nebulous concept anyway, I say Nintendo but really I mean all the shitty executives making these decisions because I know damn sure the developers aren't in charge of these decisions
what if it actually does
I'll continue to ignore it
you havent played Mother 3???
Our friend wants to watch the Direct all together at his place tonight
i played a little
So we're gonna make it an evening together haha
youve played Earthbound Beginnings but not Mother 3
I'm not watching but ping me if they somehow announce Silksong release date
I need to get back into mother 1 but I think I'm stuck atm
Mother is such a rough game
It really leans hard into those typical, brutal 80s JRPG tropes
It's super easy to get lost and not know where to go or what to even do
Yeah, it's fine for what it is
I beat mother 1 out of spite
I have a personal hard time recommending it to players unless they understand what playing an old JRPG usually entails
- Dad Eyes attacks
yeah, I think a manual is straight up required
The puzzle with the cactus was hard
why out of spite
It's not a bad game, but younger Earthbound fans may not fully grasp what they're getting into and are less likely to have fun with it
I consider it more of a curiosity for the hardcore fans
But, a very important one all the same
- You cannot grasp the form of Mother 1's attack
has Shigesato Itoi worked on any other games after Mother 3
Objectively speaking, Earthbound is just a better Mother
No question
I went into it knowing it would not be fun, but it's got such a crazy vibe I had to experience everything anyways
Like... in every way it's better, but I do love hearing the 8-bit melodies
But man, I remember playing it on emulator back in 2001 and just being so fucking mind blown that it even existed
It was fucking awesome
wow that was before i was born
Yes my son
yet

yeah, my wife has started playing Dark Souls and she's like "this feels like a game from the mid-90s and I love it!" She's the kind of person who wants the game to kill her over and over. (She also plays Minecraft on hardcore.)
JRPGs aren't quite her thing because they seem more obscure than hard, but the obscure features of Dark Souls are a bonus when stacked with just being difficult.
Well, so, like, Mother 1 isn't that kind of hard. It's obtuse.
The Legend of Zelda is that kind of hard
It's mostly just not fun to play lol
my predictions for the Direct are Donkey Kong Country and Mario movie clip
Long ago I helped beta test an Earthbound Zero ROM hack that was put out by Clyde Mandelin
One of the biggest points was reduced difficulty

that's an interesting reaction
but nice
she plays minecraft on hardcore
oh that explains it /s
REIMU FOR SMASH
I never stopped believing
I'm going to see if I can find documentation for it
perhaps Arkham Collection for Switch 👀
I enjoyed helping to beta test it and it made the game more enjoyable
Dark souls does feel like it was made by people who play a lot of old games, but it itself doesn't feel like an old game, if that makes sense
what would reimu's final smash be
I mean it's pretty much kings field but third person sort of

Bro I've just wanted waluigi in smash, is that so much to ask??
yes
Aha. It wasn't the NES/FC version, but the GBA port of Mother
there was a gba port?
Yes. It's shit
lol
No straight up, it's not a good port
I own it, it's cute for the novelty of M/M2 on the go but it's not really built well for the GBA
M2 especially suffers hard in the sound department

it's real I know a guy that knows a guy that works at Nintendo
It's been over two months since I got the rig and spent my time a couple hours almost everyday after work making this animation, and here my first rig testing, Reimu action animation!

Nahhh I've tried playing king's field 4, it's nothing like dark souls. that's a game that feels like it was made in the 90s
my dad works at Nintendo
http://mother12.earthboundcentral.com/#why Anyway this was what I helped work on, mostly just doing a full play test to look for bugs, typos, and make sure overall game balance with the Easy Ring was smooth
have you guys heard of the Pizza Tower game
Nothing big, but it was fun
I mean 2001 so you're not too far off there although the original trilogy was from 94 to 96
But honestly at this point who the fuck knows apparently people now are starting to act as if DS2 is actually a greatly designed game and the best Dark Souls so I've stopped caring about discussing Dark Souls' game design at this point
Apparently the game putting a million enemies in a single room and plenty of players understandably finding it annoying and badly designed compared to other games is now a skill issue
Remember when they did that one trailer
where a huge ass dinosaur showed up
and everyone was like
"holy shiiit dinosaur"
Aw, my name isn't on the Thanks to page
and then we were like "hoooolyyy shiiit mario"
I love ass dinosaurs

Oh well. It had a lot of people helping out, and all I did was a full play run
I didn't do any coding or much reporting, since most of what I saw seemed good
omg yes
well what if today
We see a big ass uh
dragon
hooooolyyy shit a dragon
and then the dragon has marios mustache
thoughts?
Yeah, I love ds2 but when people talk about it online it feels like they played a different game (even when I know they're talking about scholar)
I remember saying DS2 was best game was a meme back in the day, now people are saying it for real
artiks Mario Odyssey already had a dragon
yeah but mario wasnt the dragon
true
Dark souls 2: Most of the bosses suck, the whole game is player hostile, a lot of encounters are poorly designed, so many straight up not fun boss runs, game's still incredible
Also the dragon was not ass enough
and the animation for it is like the animorphs covers
I like Dark Souls 2 because of the bosses
''B-B-BUT THE DLCS ARE SO GOOD!!!1111''
''s-shut up! skill issue skill issue!!111''
Then again I don't do boss runs. I kill the enemies on the way to the boss every time
ds2 always had superfans
Yeah and they were always annoying
i dont like the animorphs covers they freak me out
Not liking ds2 is a skill issue, ngl
You just don't have enough insight points yet
I also find it funny how so many people act as if DS2's plot and lore is so much more profound because you don't actually make a choice and because Aldia exists
The cast of characters from DS1 is so much more iconic and memorable than DS2's
I wonder if they will show their holiday 2023 game
theres the praise the sun guy
But Gavlan wheel, and Gavlan deal
Probably the only somewhat charming and memorable character from DS2
iirc the tweet says it’s only going to focus on games coming out in the first half of the year but we might get a reveal idk
Lucatiel is like everyone's favorite, I thought
Oh!
Yeah because she fucking rules
I don't like Lucatiel much
i skim read Artiks sorry
:(
Also ds2 has The Rotten
dark souls 2 is great, all apart from horse fuck valley
HFV does suck, but you have to admit it's memorable!
does Dark Souls 2 have mushroom men
You're thinking of dark souls 1
The Rotten is just discount ebay version of Nito
0/10 worst game
I wish I could enjoy DS2 but everytime I booted up that game it was just pain and suffering
Yeah that makes him more relatable
The only way I could enjoy that game was playing through with a friend
we didn't even get to half the game but it was a lot more fun and I feel like it makes the game so much better
Fights that would otherwise be unfair and straight up just annoying now are kinda fun
Every time I boot up ds2 it's so unintentionally amusing. I love it so much
every time i boot up ds2 i get fucked up ||
i currently have the ascended mod installed for some reason and its painful||
I also don't enjoy DS3's direction that much so I'm stuck with only DS1 which is fine by me because I love DS1 but it does suck that there's no other DS content that appeals to me
I don't know what that is
Have you played Demons Souls?
I haven't no, especially since it's a PS exclusive
have you played Cuphead
Try a ps3 emulator?
Yeah, but I don't own it
its a mod that exists for all the souls games+elden ring designed to be brutally unfair
I see. I'm in the home stretch of an all boss sl1 playthrough, so I'm probably feeling a similar pain
I'm not super interested in Demon's either, I don't think I could even get it running anyways
relevant https://youtu.be/_v1v0t8Q5xg
Justin and Griffin play through an absolutely ruined version of Dark Souls while role-playing as a pizza-destroying mascot. Please note that framerate hiccups are on our end, not yours. Because, like we said, this version of Dark Souls is sick.
Most mods you'll see in this video — besides the few we made — can be found on Nexus Mods: http://www...
I haven't beaten it yet, but it's a fun game. The remaster is good too
it's visually impressive but I always got the feeling they kinda ruined the mood of the original
I don't feel that way at all
also the sfx for the magic sounds more like sci fi laser guns than fantasy magic spells
Please tell me you didn't do this for blue smelter demon
That's certifiably insane. Respect
Usually I do get summons to help me clear the co-op areas, and for the blue smelter demon part I do rush the falling portcullis doors to make killing everything easier
it feels like an old game, but the unfair parts are intentional creative decisions, instead of being tech limitations or make-the-arcade-kids-waste-more-quarters intentional
I can't stop being baffled at the whole zeitgeist around the Soulsbornes because people keep saying things like this about their least favorite Soulsborne, but this was my (post-Asylum) DS1 experience
DS2 has high points and low points. The high points to me are a fascinating world, rewards for platforming and exploring, and an excellently balanced combat system. The low points, I think, are some extremely unfair areas and encounters that are just gotcha moments you can't prepare for, extremely weird multi-player decisions (soul memory is dumb), and some pretty rough difficulty spikes for the DLC areas. Generally a pretty fun game, though!
Dark Souls was only good on PC thanks to Durante's mods. He pretty much is tied up with his own porting company PH3 nowadays doing (mainly) ports of Nihon Falcom titles to PC (and sometimes Switch) for Ys and Trails....
I played DS1 and dsfix was necessary, as was pvpwatchdog. I suffered through the absolutely godawful keyboard and mouse controls, too. Fun game, but holy hell was the PC port bad.
I think my failed DS1 attempt was on console? it's been too long to be certain
When is the direct (in relative hours)

welp, "loggers" is a thing now
Darks Souls 2 is uniquely player hostile to me. Shit happens in that game that just makes me laugh.
It's like the creators went "Okay, people liked dark souls because it's hard? Let's give 'em hard then, see how they really like it"
the teeth of woodsmen are Loggers' Chompers.
The most infamous thing in ds2 is that there's a stat that affects the number of invincibility frames during your roll and increase the speed you drink estus, called agility. To improve your agility, you have to level up your Adaptability, or the stat that gives you more spell slots.
None of this is explained in words unless you hit the help button in the stat screen and then hover over the agility stat icon
Also you start with only 1 estus charge, so at first you have to make use of consumable healing items. So if you suck and run out shit gets kinda rough early on.
Also every time you die, you lose a little bit of your max health until you're at 50%
But the funny stuff is really the level design. Lots of mean traps that won't outright kill you, but will give you a lot of grief, to sum it up
I have provided you with appropriate reactions.
Yeah that was directly taken from Demon's Souls
In fact, DS2 in its entirety resembles Demon's a lot
As does DS3, DS1 is the only outlier there
But I've grown tired of discussing it because every single time you get people that go ''oh well this wasn't a problem for me'' or ''lol just level up X stat it's not that hard'' or ''damn this game is so easy dude, skill issue'' etcetera etcetera
I really wish I could enjoy and like DS2 as much as those who love DS2 do but I personally see absolutely no high points in that game
it goes beyond just a personal dislike of it because I never got the same experience with DS1, with DS2 I just feel like the game is simply not fun or appealing and it's pulling every trick to just make the experience unenjoyable for me
2 didn't have Hidetaka Miyazaki and it shows, it is why it is the odd game out of the entire series.
DS2 has my favorite covenant, the Rat King Covenant. It lets you set up a trap filled gauntlet in an area and make things difficult for players trying to get to that area's boss.
I remember one of the last times I had touched DS2 I was in Aldia's Keep I believe and I was going through those walls where there's a giant orc behind it and they slam down the walls entirely and there's literally nothing you can do about it, like at all and there's literally no signs that it will ever happen unless you know beforehand, which I did know, and I still couldn't stop it
and that happens twice in a row
and I remember being so incredibly frustrated that I didn't even react I just straight up closed the game
Hell yeah that was sick
and that was like my 3rd playthrough
Yeah, that is the bullshit stuff you can't predict or work around without knowing it is there that I don't like about DS2.
It happens a lot
And don't get me wrong there's stuff like that in other Souls games but the point is that it doesn't happen as much or it's placed in other places where it's not much of an annoyance and it can be sort of fun
But when the entire game is like that it sucks
Like having an npc invader that disguises as a pot and then taunts you after he kills you
Most of the time in other games, the bullshit isn't without warning and a careful or skilled player could actually avoid them just by playing normally. Not so with DS2's examples of it. They expect you to die to the bullshit and approach it differently next time.
It's a bit different, in demons souls you lost half your health after one death, so they had to design the levels to be reasonably beatable at that health. In ds2 it felt like they play tested the levels at like 75-100%
those posion statues are bastards if you run by and get cought out, but ds2 is designed around not doing that
Yeah, it's a Poison Swamp™
Fuck black gultch all my homies hate black gultch
''The player has just gotten through a pretty tough zone huh? Maybe we should just place a couple relatively easy enemies to get through in the way to the boss fog gate''
Nah fuck that, just place a bunch of vases around that shoot poison at you and they're literally in every single conceivable spot so it's unsafe to travel through and they're placed riiiiight next to the boss gate so even if you manage to dodge you WILL get hit as soon as you enter
So you now enter the fight with less health and poison applied to you
The gutter is awesome though. Maybe my favorite non dlc level
The poison statue level is very frustrating. I take is super slow by breaking every single statue before it can spit
What a masterpiece of a game
You know, that is a good observation. DS2 is a lot like Demon's Souls in theme and level design.
Such good design
the other day I watched a video about an old Fromsoft game no one talks about anymore (Eternal Ring), so when the guy said "and here's a poison butterfly because Fromsoft" that was new information to me but also still pretty funny
This but unironically
I mean, once you notice it's the statues you can see them in advance and you can break them, it's still not an easy zone for sure
The boss is good at least
The Rotten my beloved. Kind of a mid boss, but he's got charm!
Honestly, the poison swamp was probably the most Miyazaki thing they could have added to DS2.
He loves those.
You can even cut off his arm, it's pretty unique for souls games
Usually it's only the dragons in DS1 you get to cut pieces of

I nominate Jabba the Hutt as the best DS2 boss.
In another timeline perhaps we may have gotten DS2 as it was fully originally envisioned
Just because plagiarism.
I would've loved to play that game
That's fair
Fume Knight was a bit much, but Alonne was kind of fucking awesome
I never got past Fume Knight and I never liked the fight but if I say that every sweaty DS2 hardcore fan will literally teleport to my house and backstab me so I can't say that
I thought Alonne had even more health
Alonne is easier and more fun to dodge though
Fume was more the massive aoes that were annoying to me
I like his vibe, I like his moveset, I like the lore, but his health bar is too big. The fight drags on for so long and his damage is high enough that one or two mistakes is death.
Fume Knight would've been fine if it didn't have the shitty random health regeneration totems around him
The fight is already pretty challenging by itself
You can break those
But DS2 can't stop itself they just have to add more shit in there
Lol I was technically right, he has a smidgen of extra health
The Hp was okay, all of the DLC in DS2 is a bit overtuned but I did it with big sword unga bunga so eh, kinda didn't feel like too much health
You can break them but that doesn't mean they should've been placed there in the beginning
It encourages you to explore the level to get the keys to turn them off
That is if you didn't use them before getting there or if you can even go back to get them
I kinda liked that bit, like with the knights in the 3rd DLC
Because you can totally use those before you get to the fume knight arena
Allows you to fight a stronger version or explore for a more fair fight

I like it in concept, but the area was so murderously aggressive and high damage that it was very painful to find them all.
I also find that encouraging exploring just for the sake of finding key items to turn those totems off is super redundant
Huh? You can't run out, there's enough in the level I think
Like just take them off and make me explore for something that is actually worth it
Considering fume knight is an optional difficult fight I feel like it's fine
There's enough for all but one
There is not enough of them on the level
I know because it happened to me and I was missing one
I believe there is if you skip using one while exploring.
You have to choose between using all the keys on the level or the boss.
Yeah if you don't use one that you already had, which you would've never known if you'd needed afterwards or not
So either make the level easier and the boss harder or the level harder and the boss easier.
The whole system of those things feels extremely poorly thought out for me
Yeah, it isn't a fairly presented decision.
That entire DLC is already challenging by itself, the enemies are tough and there's already a lot of them around, let's just throw in more bullshit to make them even stronger
Why even put that there in the first place anyways is what's going through my mind as I'm going through that area

They definitely did some experimentation with the DLCs
Like the switches to activate with arrows in the 1st one
I looked it up and there are exactly enough smelter wedges to use on all the ashen idols (11.) You need to do all of them and then kill fume knight to get the soul of nadalia
Exactly enough but the game never even hints that you should hold onto them so if you use them for anything else then you're fucked
which is what happened to me
There must be an easy to miss one, then.
Huh? You can only use them on ashen idols
Some ashen idols are just sitting there. No sense wasting a wedge on them
This is making me feel like playing DS2, which I know by experience it'd be a bad idea.
Good game but I am afraid after tasting 3 and Elden Ring, it might really be a bit too rough around the edges
Yes?
Well if you want the soul you have to do all of them anyway
And there are ashen idols in other places before the fume knight fight
places where you might totally want to use them especially in your first run
Okay, I thought you were saying that it was impossible to get rid of all the ashen idols
Elden Ring feels like such a Greatest Hits compilation of nearly all of Fromsofts catalogue that I feel like the only reason to go back to any other Souls game is because you personally like it or like that specific world a bit more
I know I love Lordran and DS1's world a hell of a lot more than the others
But The Lands Between is fantastic
Also mods
I did ds1 boss and enemy randomizer. That was pretty fun

And yeah, I kinda felt like playing DS2 for a second, it's definitely because despite me never finishing the game I actually played through it a bunch and there's a lot of content I still haven't experienced myself in DS2 so that definitely calls my attention and draws me in a bit because hey it's more DS content, but I just know that I will NOT have fun
Because it happened so many times before so I just don't even feel like doing it anymore
Youtube alone has ingrained a few parts of it into my brain even though I'm never going to play it
particularly that one elevator
Yeah I got there when I was testing out the game
that entire area is magical
...but bullshit
ER is a 10/10 game for me
I hate the enemies in that area and I'm disappointed Fromsoft keeps pulling shit like that

Yeah the one thing souls didn't have many of, was vast open areas, and it's clear the devs had ideas as to what to do with them once they could
It's an area that doesn't really allow you to get through it in your own way but more so the area itself will keep punishing you until you play the way IT wants you to
The 1st idea, was making about a 3rd of them into poison swamps
The rest look really cool tho
I wonder if anyone has gotten through the whole series without having this experience somewhere
Not having fun at some point?
Remember that one promotional shot of Elden Ring they kept putting everywhere? For once, that's actually in the game!
I remember reaching Liurnia of the Lakes and seeing the Lucaria Academy from afar and thinking ''woah''
this really is the BOTW of the Souls games /s
This really is Skyrim with guns
But unironically just like BOTW on a first playthrough the game just keeps making you go ''Woah...
'' at everything
Except they removed weapon durability instead of adding it
They might as well have removed it in ds3
My sword doesn't break in 10 hits
I actually took 20 or so hours to notice weapon durability was gone, and it proved how fucking pointless of a mechanic it is
It's so fucking pointless
It was never a good idea lol
It's literally just an annoyance it doesn't make the experience any more deeper or anything
The only times you notice it, it's because you are annoyed by its existence
wait, was there weapon durability in one of the Fromsoft games or is this just the standard BotW complaint?
I remember in DS2 I kept using this giant hammer when I was doing a STR run and I just kept a bunch of those little dust items that repair your weapon all the time because my hammer would break in like literally 50 hits or something
All DS games have weapon durability
Your items can break
All of the dark souls games and Bloodborne
...huh
Every single item has a durability stat
There was weapon durability in all souls games except Sekiro and ER
So your rings and armor can break as well
You don't lose them if they break. You just gotta fix them (with limited exceptions)
I... guess I didn't get far enough in DS1 for it to matter?
Maybe you never noticed it
In DS1 it mattered in some weapons only
If you sit at a bonfire you recover. It's an anti-cheese mechanic
That reduced ruability a lot if you used certain special attacks
I don't know if they recover at bonfires because you can still repair them at bonfires with the tool box
I actually don't remember how it worked precisely
In DS1 it didn't recover, you had to manually fix them
The recovering at bonfires was a ds2 addition
I think in DS2 they recover at bonfires
In DS2 it recovered unless it was broken
I definitely didn't get to anything like repairing or upgrading weapons, I never even found decent gear
In which case you had to find a blacksmith
In DS3 I don't actually remember
If you start as the knight class you start with decent gear
The thing about the souls games is pretty much everything is decent gear
So it was never really something that got in the way but if you ever were upgrading or leveling up and you had some spare souls you would usually want to go into that repair tool box and just repair all your current gear
oh no you're not baiting me into this argument
If you didn't repair for a long time it would build up but it honestly was never really a huuuuge issue
But I wanna argue with you 🥺
It's not a big deal except in DS2 where it's plain annoying
I don't know what happened in DS2 because everything is so.... weird, values are so incredibly high for no reason
It's interesting that they make it so in some weapons it's a FP meter
You get an incredible amount of souls but the requirement to level up is also insanely high
Like the Drake Sword
In DS2 durability was based on your framerates! Playing on higher FPS broke your weapons faster
The durability on stuff is incredibly low sometimes as well
In DS2 it was a problem if you used rapier or daggers, or short sowrds, etc...stuff that made sense that had low durability.
Yes, they fixed it, in case anyone was wondering
The fact that it made sense didn't make it more fun
do we need to make a Soulslike containment thread /j
You could
It's not a containment thread
but do they really have low durability?
I feel like a regular broadsword would require more maintenance than a dagger...
Souls games are hugely influential and people are gonna end up discussing them even if you put them in a thread
It's funny because it's the same argument where the Souls games say that a claymore or a two handed sword is this super heavy thing when in reality they weigh like, what, 2-4 kg?
Two handed swords are surprisingly light
I mean in the sense that's smaller and if you keep jabbing it against things it's probably break sooner
first we would need a thread to define what exactly is a Soulslike and why Hollow Knight totally isn't one so the non-masochists like me can still talk about it up here
i meant like the From Software games i wasnt even thinking about others
Hmmmm I guess it would depend on the type of blade but usually even a rapier is quite a sturdy blade
But I don't wanna start nerding out over real life weapons
🤓
yeah Fromsoft game vs Soulslike is a huge difference at this point
Why not?
what would the pony equivalent of that emoji be? Moondancer?

and not just because some of my all time favorites are the latter while some of my all time worst experiences were the former
Isn't that pretty accurate?
A Claymore is definitely less than 10 pounds in game
Technically guy
A claymore in dark souls can easily put you in like mid roll territory if you already have a set of armor on
Lemme check, wiki says 6 pounds
In reality that wouldn't really happen
i dont have a Mud Briar emoji
Okay now I'm curious what you've played
In reality you'd be lucky to midroll naked
The claymore alone wont do that, you need some armor on you
i dont think ive liked any Soulslikes
I can't do anything but heavy rolls
DS1 and Hollow Knight I think are the only ones ive tried?
It should probably be mentioned that the values in DS aren't super accurate to reality anyways
the weight isn't classified by pounds or kg
In reality you'd be dumb to roll everywhere to try to avoid attacks, who does that?
it's just this arbitrary number that doesn't mean much
How else do you get your invulnerability frames?
In real life a zweihander weights around like 2-4 kg but in Dark Souls games it's usually hovering at 10, not pounds or kg just... just 10
10 something
10 tons
Spend your chi
10 bloobleblops
I think it's pretty accurate if you translate it to pounds
also yeah rolling is super dumb
I don't have any chi
Well then we'd have to assume that the value is pounds
I have knees
and somehow I don't believe it is
That's awesome
I think Bloodborne didn't have rolls but instead dodging? Which seems like the best option
and I kinda wish Dark Souls had that....
kratta do you not have knees
Knees are the bee's knees
I have knees, that's how I know how awesome having knees is
🧎♂️
It was both. You dodged if you were locked on to an enemy
Bloodborne rolled if you weren't targeting and dodged if you were I seem to remember
also Elden Ring is technically the first game of this kind to have a type of early firegun with the jar cannon?
I agree it looks cooler
I don't recall any type of firegun like that in any of the other DS games
who made Dark Souls
no yoy didnt
Bloodborne has a flamethrower
Nire did
Well except bloodborne
Sick

for my good ones:
Ixrec — 01/03/2023 1:45 AM
for me J:FO is the only game that superficially resembles 3D Soulslike gameplay (as opposed to every other meaning of "Soulslike") but actually delivered on the hard-but-fair challenge everyone keeps claiming that genre provides
Ixrec — 01/18/2023 8:36 PM
Hollow Knight is probably still my favorite "Soulslike Metroidvania", but Blasphemous and Ender Lilies are extremely close seconds
I thought Dark Souls 3 was the last one
People are never gonna stop asking for DS4
why
It's good
Because people can't stop wanting things
No, people are never gonna stop asking for dark souls II 2
Yeah I forgive you for the souls slander because you like HK
Imagine if they only made three Mario Bros games
i dont want a Dark Souls 4
What's J:FO?
The thing is that even without Dark Souls they're still making other Dark Souls type games
Bloodborne, Sekiro, Elden Ring...
Now wait thirty years

I love Lordran but i am kinda happier when they make new worlds rather than iterate on previous ones.
what is Lordran
the setting of DS1
Okay, whatever you do don't play Nioh
Mario is in Dark Souls now
I love menus
I like Nioh but I think it's more brutal to new players than dark souls
I play games that are only menus
like Witcher 3
I hate when you get wagons of loot and you have to spend minutes sorting it out instead of playing the game
No that one also had sex scenes
I was going to say "like JRPGs", Witcher 3 is relatively low on the menuing
at least the way I played it
i know i just dont like witcher 3
that's fine, Witcher 2 was better /hides
The Witcher 3 is that one game where I just keep hearing about it and I feel like I should play it but I'm never really sure
Especially since I'm not familiar with the lore
I played a bit of W3 following the next-gen update (never played any Witcher game before)
don't worry about the lore
I played it not knowing anything and it was fine
the only good thing i can say about Witcher 3 is that Geralt was hot
it looks great, gameplay is ok but I have a hard time caring about game stories
everything else was bleh
I find myself skipping a lot of conversation cutscenes at least
I thought it was fun
How can you like Witcher 2? I mean I like Witcher 1 but holy shit the gameplay in Witcher 2 was borderline unplayable for me
while there is continuity between all of the Witcher games/novels/show/etc, it honestly doesn't matter where you enter the franchise because all of them intentionally put you into a world where everyone already has an agenda and a history and doesn't care to explain it all to you, so you'll be about equally unsure what's going on whether you start at 1, 2, or 3
and Witcher 2 is easily the best of the three at story, which is the only reason I ever care about an RPG anyway
I do love the story in Witcher 2, to be clear
Also I like when game companies do bold things
I only play RPGs for the mechanics
i just dont think Witcher 3 was the second coming of christ or however people were describing it
Doesn't Witcher 2 directly follow up on Witcher 1?
I realize that's... a stupid thing to say but I mean in the sense that it probably assumes you played W1 before right?
Like, completely diverging patchs that means you are not going to see 1/4 of the game
Unless you replay it
That was cool
it's set after W1, but not to the point where you'd be seriously disadvantaged by not playing W1
I wish they remembered to also make a good game together to the awesome interactive book they had with it
they basically just tell you that Geralt's working for Foltest because he saved Foltest's life at the end of W1 and that's all you ever need to know
yep, the whole reason I talked my mom into "playing"/making the narrative choices is that IMO even with all the jank it's still one of the best examples of meaningful choices in a video game, and we were both invested in that franchise already so it was too perfect not to try
The combat system is like completely different in all the witcher games right?
I only played a bit of Witcher 1...

Yeah
yes
not that I ever learned any of them well enough to compare properly, but I think so yes
Witcher 3 best part was its story, but unlike Witcher 2, playing it was actually kinda fun.
So I kind of agree with Ix that the story in 2 was better (at least better paced, IDK if it'd surpass the whole Ciri arc) I had overall a much better time with Witcher 3
yep, 2 is laser-focused on its story unless you try to do way too many sidequests
My friend has always insisted that Gwent is the main story in Witcher 3, and that the rest is just side content
idk maybe i just have an inability to get into games that aren’t Mario/Zelda/gay
3 is an "open world" in all the usual ways I dislike, including kinda forgetting it even has a story if you ever get sidetracked
Gwent is fun but it's no Triple Triad
I think I kind of hate gwent
Hmmmm I wonder if I'd enjoy Witcher 2 or 3 more...
I think that the open world mechanics were the worst part, completely cookie cutter OW game like.
That said, the quest were very well written, and the map really cool, so it wasn't too bad
I do like story and characters.... but at the same time it's nice to have a game where you just... play
you know?
I do, but for me that's a "well don't play an RPG then
" line of reasoning
After the next Witcher game they are remaking 1, so there is that option if you wanna wait and start from 1, in like, 10 years
for me W2 and W3 and the FFs and Planescape so on are all about equal as far as "the gameplay is an obstacle between me and the story" goes
Excellent
yoy are a man with swords
It's just lodged in this very awkward game
(Fire Emblem is the exception here because I genuinely enjoy the tactical stuff, even if I still wish it had less RPGing)
And it starts kind of bad
I tried watching a let's play of W1 and basically fell asleep
on paper it's a good story but compared to W2-3 it's not even worth trying any more
That sounds about right
There is also a huge video essay that is a viable alternative to playing Witcher 1
yeah, W1 is best experienced via video essay these days
I tried playing Witcher 1, and in like 15 minutes my soul rejected it
Call of Cthulhu and Sinking City were big letdowns for me
(oh and Mass Effect is the exception that proved the rule by deleting the RPGing in its second installment lol)
the only RPGs ive enjoyed are the Mario & Luigi titles
This, it does some small references to the other games but it's a Witcher 1 huge recap, with also a ton of details as how the game works, the quirks, an analysis of what works and what doesn't.

It is 4 hours but it's really interesting and it's much shorter than Witcher 1
The first of three videos on The Witcher Series. This is focused on the first game but discusses all three of them, plus some comments on the books and TV series.

I think I enjoyed one of the Paper Marios but I remember none of it
and i guess FFVII but thats mostly for the story and characters
Ever play Fallen London?
yep, FF7 and 9 were 100% attack-attack-cure-ok this story's pretty good-attack-attack-curaga for me
Cloud and Barret and Aerith and Tifa my beloveds

I'm still impressed that the Aerith thing had such an impact on me despite the spoiler being omnipresent long before I played it
Also a "Lovecraft videogame" is Darkest Dungeon!
If I'm gonna play a turn based rpg it's gotta have something special about it that's not gameplay related. Like Earthbound or Persona 5 or something. Turn based combat just isn't all that fun to me
i tried P5 and got bored
Lovecraft video games tend to be rather brutal now that i think about it
I'm not necessarily opposed to turn-based combat, but there has to be interesting decision making during the combat instead of everything being predetermined by the gear treadmill
That's Lovecraft for you
I mean that's fair
so, again, like Fire Emblem
Terror that makes you lose your sanity and then you die
(maybe XCOM? I've never played that)
good game
I wonder what the general opinion on SMTV was, although I never really heard much about that game as I did from P5
XCOM is a tactical turn based strategy game like Fire Emblem.
I've seen enough Persona to know I wouldn't get much out of playing it myself
well I know or at least assume that Persona as a franchise streamlined a lot so it's far more appealing
and I always kind of saw SMT as that hardcore franchise for hardcore JRPG fans
Fire Emblem was not unfun to me, but I also felt done after just a few hours
to be clear Fire Emblem sort of half-succeeds for me
when I originally tried Blazing Blade as a teenager I got through just under 20 chapters before giving up and also feeling like I'd had more than my fill of it
I like XCOM more than Fire Emblem because of the added strategic layer
but with Tale around to smooth out the rougher edges of RPGness that don't click for me, Sacred Stones (completed) and Path of Radiance (nearly done) have been pretty consistently fun
Engage is pretty fun.
epic
It doesn't have the social aspect of Three Houses.
is there any way to change how the main character looks
Mario + Rabbids is great but lacks the strategic layer
yeah but it has Mario
The joycon look works with the colors of the game.
I still suspect if I tried playing an FE entirely on my own I'd once again get overwhelmed and not finish it
if nothing gets shadowdropped or announced during today’s Direct I may think about getting Engage idk
my point in bringing it up here is just that it's the only turn-based series that's come close to working for me, rather than being one of those games where the gameplay is an obstacle between me and the story
The whole gimmick is you pair people with characters from the other games.
im trying to watch my spending habits
im a bit impulsive

In 1 hour

I want a new wario game
The kong is good too
Will definitely see zelda other than that anything goes

We're going to see Pikmin 4, Tears of the Kingdom and Advance Wars 1+2, but other than that I dunno
If tears really is the last major release I expect nothing but disappointment
an ape that isn't bored for once!!

What they should do is port wind waker hd to switch
They should've done that and Twilight Princess HD
But they didn't, much to my annoyance.
Twilight princess could be a good filler title next console
they'll announce an ExciteBike x Wave Race x Star Fox collaboration
Also slightly annoyed the 3ds ports of 3d zelda arnt ported
Right?
they should just bundle all the zeldas and marios together, port them to every console
and pokermans
They use to do that for mario
i would genuinely buy that
Pokemon is the most egregious
Scalpers have made getting anything up to sun and moon stupid expensive
And then nintendo wonders why people pirate
It's not too hard to pirate and emulate every game prior to the PS1, but it's much harder to port and sell them officially
Yeah
(you can store them all in less than one terabyte too!)
Yep
Not that i would know

Though lets be real. Any console gen above that people are just choosing what they want to play or replay
N64 library advantage over PS1
(not only because of cartridge size, but also because it's a lot smaller)
I would!
PS1 lost its main advantage when the crash and spyro remakes came out
The terabyte number is including the PS1 and every console before it
That's a 3.53TB collection.
But it also includes lossless compression
I am super impressed at how games like SM64 or Zelda OOT can fit in cartridges that small
Let me guess
SM64 is like, smaller than doom.wad
Gamecube and wii are the thicc bois
GameCube and Wii games benefit a lot from Dolphin's lossless compression
OoT is one of the very few before-my-time games that I played on its original console instead of in an emulator
Wii is 2.1TB
had to blow on the cartridge and everything
Wii u there’s basically no point now that everything besides wind waker is ported to switch
I'm also surprised at how small the GoldenEye XBLA package is compared to nearly any other Xbox 360 game out there, it's like 300 MB compressed
I have WiiU buried elsewhere due to its size
i gave my WiiU to my little brother
Oh right, and only part of it
I hate to see when we get to effective switch emulation
Just the games I actually care about
it's already here today
Lol
I'm using Ryujinx as we speak
Yuzu and Rakuten played the Pokemon games better than the native hardware on day 1
I’ll probably wait until nintendos new console before delving in regardless
I have yet to try Yuzu (don't need it yet)
I'm not kidding
I played a lot more on the emulator than I did on the console because it was just so much better
I need to try out ps3 emulator more
And in 4K!
They reached the milestone that every game is playable to some extent rexentlt
Dread also works very well
no but seriously what is wrong with those Pokemon games. ive been replaying BOTW recently and aside from a few frame hiccups it’s run flawlessly
Botw lets be fair had to be held back some what for wii u
Game Freak has always made famously buggy games, but their transition to 3D has been very unkind to them and they haven't really improved.
And they refuse help
Game Freak has a 1990s budget and timeline to develop 2022 games, that doesn't help
That too
it’s really weird considering they own the biggest media franchise on earth
#1032733661671460937 message
Game Freak really needs to be dropped but they're contractually bound to make the Pokemon games. Nobody else can.
Yeah
If you really dig deeply into the whole deal with Game Freak it's actually pretty sad
Same
Maybe they'll be like "Metroid Prime 4 will be on the next console, please look forward to it"
Or "it's cancelled again"
One of those
hopefukly its not cancelled again that would suck
I'd be violently furious
i would love if they announced they were remaking the Oracle games in the style of the LA remake
Oh that'd be cool
hopefully not for 60 bucks each but this is Nintendo so idk
Its nintendo you know they will
i wish they'd team up with a larger studio to help out like Intelligent Systems did in the move to home console development with Three Houses with Koei Tecmo, Bandai Namco would be a good choice as they have helped in the past for Pokken and New Pokemon Snap
It is but I wouldn't have it be your first FE
One of the older ones, or awakening
is Awakening the one on 3ds
My first was Three Houses and I really enjoyed it, though I do know many FE fans are mixed on it
Awakening is a great first pick
I'm looking forward to finally getting to Awakening and Three Houses for myself
Awakening is pretty fun
Awakening was the one I played
I believe Awakening was the one that basically saved the franchise from death as it finally broke through into Western markets
True but you're wrong to say it
Three houses is not a bad starting place but I'm avoiding it for Cap in particular
Knowing a little about them
I try and taylor my reccs
Why did i use taylor the name there
lol
Awakening is only the best starting choice because Tharja is hot
I had a framed poster of Tharja behind me for the entire 5 hr management meeting I just sat through
thats quite the outfit
Tale has made me aware of Tharja despite being nowhere near the games she appears in lol
probably because shes hot
#thatsthejoke
Ixrec i have autism you cant #thatsthejoke me
Oh neat
whoa!
Lesbians loved tharja so much they actually made her gay in Fates
She's the one lesbian romance
epic
taylor swift your reccs
Rekt
Odds are very strong I would have thought of Skitter over Swift
In fact that was my first thought
