guys, I played the game, I know how stealth works
Yeah that was my logic as well, there are places in which you can't use it, so if they give you option, they mean that encounter to be faced using that tool as well, was my reasoning at the time.
I haven't, just going off what I have seen and what I heard from my boyfriend when he played.
And contrary to popular belief, I don't usually try to make Souls games harder on myself
right, but you clearly have some raw skill that I don't
I mean, maybe, I probably more than anything else just played more souls games.
You clearly are better than me in metroidvania games given how farther you were able to go in Blasphemous so it's definitely not a raw reflexes things
I like to use sorceries in pvp and have since DS2. You have to get really good at dodging when you do that, just through sheer repetition. My reflexes aren't great, it is mostly learning how attack patterns work.
I'm aware: ^
It is a tedious process. Lots of screwing up and dying, which often isn't fun.
I enjoy the learning process in souls, which might just be the difference
I got hooked on the atmosphere of DS1 way back when, just from watching YouTube videos about it. It was so different than most fantasy games that I was willing to put up with the difficult, unforgiving gameplay to explore that world.
when I get to the learning process, it's fun while it lasts, a lot of the problem here is wasting so much time repeating encounters I'm already fine at that no learning is actually happening, which is why I was hoping for something like a save state hack
Is it possible to run past the enemies or will they join the boss fight if you do that?
also the first two minibosses were fine because they were right after a save point
It's also unique to souls games for me, maybe because they are known to be difficult, I don't usually feel bad when I fail.
It's kind of expected so I feel free from judgment when I get faceplanted by a wardrobe sized dude, wearing armor and a small car for a sword
no, this area is specifically designed so that simply isn't an option
you really do need to kill the regular enemies, either before or during the miniboss fight
Yuck. DS2 had an area like that. It was annoying.
(I assume "during" is the pro showoff strat)
again, I don't mind failing and having to retry
what I mind is a death loop where I'm mostly repeating stuff I've already done and am not learning anything about what's killing me
I wish you luck. I have not played Sekiro, but I remember my boyfriend having a rough time of it. He enjoyed the game overall, but there were some fights he definitely hated.
oh, to be clear, I've already called it in
I've done something like 10-20 attempts on this guy, stopped having fun by 4-5, and I'm literally getting worse at it
so short of a mod that lets me actually practice the boss instead of his mooks, this is clearly not happening
stuck on the ogre?
if you use the bell from the old woman to go to the hirata estate, theres a flame barrel shinobi tool you can get there

I play some WOW or various other single player games. The story interests me most!
btw, I tried it again and finally won this time
then I died to the horse guy
so Gen was close
I have no idea how strong horse dude is, because the 1st playthrough it was the 2nd real boss I fought, or 3rd, depending how you count them
I would argue 2nd
And difficulty wise he is definitely supposed the be the 1st
So I was overpwered and the other boss gave me a parry crash course after I tried to kill it for probably 3-4 hours
So I just walked up to him and one shot him
I think my parry timing is okay-ish, but I'm running out of stamina so often that parries often "stop working" before the boss even finishes an attack combo
With one shot him I don't mean I killed him with one hit, just on the 1st try
To be clear
granted I only tried the horse once before going "ok I'm good for tonight
"
As a sidenote, you can theorically parry even with no stamina
but from that first glance it definitely felt like I was way underleveled
On a perfect parry your guard can't be broken
whereas the third mini-boss felt like I would've had no trouble if not for all the mooks I had to keep re-killing every attempt
how perfect is perfect?
So if you have a perfect timing you have theorically infinite staina to parry
Pretty hard to get
right, so for a player like me the mechanic may as well not exist
But if you are in a situation which is either try to parry or a desperate dodge that will probably fail, it's worth a shot
Also even if it's broken, you don't get damaged on the hit that breaks it
You get stunned but if that's the last hit of the combo, you might recover before you actually get hit
that part I knew already (or rather, I never considered the alternative)
oh, and the third mini-boss was constantly breaking my parry with his final/strong attacks but he couldn't capitalize on it
Oh also a mechanich that's not obvious
And that goes for both you and the enemies
The stamina recovers faster the more health you have

It gets told to you, I don't remember in which setting, it might be a loading screen tip
Are those even in the game?

in theory I'm reading every pop-up message, but annoyingly Fromsoft is one of those Japanese devs (why is it always Japanese games that do this?) where over half the tutorial text is redundantly re-explaining very obvious things to the point that the useful information is downright obfuscated, so I've definitely missed stuff
It's good to know because sometimes you have the option to try to damage the enemy or try to wait for it to attack for a parry, but if the boss is still full hp the stamina damage they take from you parrying is very temporary, so it might be better to try to get at least some wounds in before focusing on the stamina damage.
I see
It's not linear either, generally even a few hits in, them getting under 90-80% would slow their stamina regen a lot
I remember thinking with the 2nd and 3rd minibosses that stamina damage built up on them slowly enough that it wasn't worth the risk of trying to press the attack, and safely doing chip damage was a better plan (especially the 2nd, since most of his attacks are unparryable anyway)
I think part of the reason I finally beat the 3rd was that I kinda stopped trying to learn the boss properly and instead did a bunch of paranoid bunny hopping with occasionally dipping in for chip damage when I was really sure he'd stay still
I like to be aggressive because it lets you control the fight more, when enemy block your attacks, sometimes they do a perfect parry (which is a different sound a bigger spark on the blade crossing) and try to counterattack
I found memorizing the timing on the counterattacks a good way to get good parries in.
Muscle memory wise
there are a lot of games where that applies to me
but that assumes being aggressive does translate to control, which just isn't how this game works at my skill level
You probably will have to plant your face aginst the wall a few times to get the timing, but Sekiro is definitely the game that gives you the most power in a fight
Maybe it's because of the parry system and how robust you can be with good timing
yeah, when I can get a game's parry system to really click with my muscle memory it feels amazing
but usually it's just not that reliable for me; I can only assume either the timing is too tight for my reflexes or my understanding of the cues too subtly incorrect
I never felt in a soul that I had the upper hand on a boss fight, unless I was hilariously overpowered, in Sekiro it definitely happens once you "learn" it.
even with e.g. Blasphemous whether I could get it varied from boss to boss and attack to attack so I'd sorta just try parrying everything a couple times and only keep trying if it "seemed to work"
Sekiro is also more lenient that you may realise, there is very little punishing for spamming the parry button, it recovers really fast
well, spamming it does narrow the parry timing
Kinda helps with learning
but I am aware that rapid-fire parrying is intended, since we've already had mini-bosses do rapid-fire attacks that were all parryable
though I'm still trying to time those rather than mash the button
The learning curve is that if no attack is coming you should probably not be spamming parry but cutting some new holes in the dude
But yeah, there isn't a big punish for a missed parry unless the attack is coming right that moment
see that's the attitude I can never allow myself to fall into because it invariably gets me killed in <10 seconds lol
in a game like this where nearly everything is a 1-2 hit kill, attacking is simply not an option until I've learned which attacks leave the boss open the longest
Oh yeah, it's not something that comes naturally the 1st time you fight a new enemy for sure
As I said, my experience has been weird, I fought 1st a boss that was supposed to be either 2nd or 3rd, but the good thing about that fight, is that it's really hard, especially with base damage, and also has almost no run back to it, so I could brute force out some of my souls habit by fighting it a bunch
And incidentally, it's also a fight that really cements that being aggressive pays off
lol, I look up the name of the horse guy and immediately I see "useful equipment: <thing I don't have>"
exactly what I was afraid of
actually while you're here I really should ask
of the 50 random items I keep picking up, what's actually useful?
because this is another one of the ways DS1 managed to obscure critical information that in a normal game I would've easily figured out on my own; item overload to the point that I can't be bothered testing them all
Everything have some use, while a lot of it foundamental
I redownloaded the game, lemme check if there is something I want to highlight, most of the stuff does what's on the tin
and that's the "answer" I was afraid of
for the record, I did test a handful of them, but (as is so often the case in games with consumable items like this) either couldn't get them to do anything at all (ceramic shard), or the effect was so minor I couldn't come up with a practical use for them (fistful of ash)
and it's hardly practical or fun to start every boss fight with a "does this item do anything?" checklist
anyway
fortunately horse guy doesn't have an entourage to re-kill every attempt
so I can probably give that a fair try tomorrow
after a sidequest, now that the wiki's told me I'm missing something important
The ceramic shard is just used to pull an enemy from far away
They hear it shattering and they go check what did the noise
So you can do the murdering in peace
IIRC
that was also my understanding from reading the description, but when I tried throwing a bunch they got no reaction at all
Of the sugars, if you find the green one (the gachin sugar) it's IMO the most useful of the bunch
see this is exactly what I mean about the in-game information being bad
It basically makes you next to invisible
I do remember that item going by
To be fair, it's not that obvious but trying to targeting an enemy before pressing the button isn't exactly a unimaginable concept
don't think I've found a reason to use it yet
sure, I get that you could've maybe discovered that by accident, but it's just as easy to do what I did and throw it right at the enemy's feet and conclude the thing doesn't work when nothing happens
Speaking of 2nd playthough tricks, you can get a sneak first attack on the ogre by using a green sugar, then pressing yourself against the place in which he is tied to
As I said, I have zero honor in sekiro
especially when distraction throwables in every other stealth game I've ever played are typically thrown at the place you want to be investigated, not at the enemy
(usually throwing stuff right at them just gets you insta-spotted)
Not the most obvious thing as i said, but also, hardly something that is beyond human imagination to try
Even not by accident
if figuring out that one item had been a primary goal of mine, I'd probably have landed on it eventually
but that's not the game we're talking about
I was just trying to get a straight answer to which of the dozens of items cluttering my inventory are worth devoting brainpower to, and which are a waste of my time
because it's never "all of them", no game with this many items actually works like that
The items stay surprisingly effective through the game, like, for example, the fistful of ash stuns humanoid bosses and lategame enemies as well.
And the buffs from the candies are okay, nothing special, so it's hard to tell which items you'd find useful
I didn't use them a lot, I focused on a few shinobi tools I found fun, but they have a use if you want to employ them
The candy is an highlight because being invisible, in a game with a stealth system that allows you to oneshot enemies, is as it turns out, pretty strong
Unbelivable I know

I am ashamed I didn't get it the first try, it's my favorite game of all time. Can you ever forgive me, ||Bone Wagon?||
I think it's one of the cases where if you know the game it's quite obvious but if you're not very familiar with it you'll never guess

I see there's a link there where you can suggest games... I am debating sending a couple
Do it
i was close to getting it the first time but something urged me to put ||deponia|| even though its a completly different art style
Honestly image 2 was deeply evocative of Heart of Darkness
IDK why, I played it like twice at someone's house, but I keep putting ||heart of darkness|| as a guess in a lot of games, even when it's wrong.
First pic was so zoomed in, I couldn't really tell anything other than it is a ||car|| but it could've been from anywhere. Second pic, is supposed to be a "little less difficult" to guess compared to first but anyone who has played that game or as much as I have will instantly recognize it. Heck, pics 3-4 were harder
if heart of darkness ever comes up i'm probably gonna burn like 2-3 geusses on oddworld
day 61 was roughly the same ~~since i'm currently going through them, almost done
~~ the first pic is generic, the second is the plaza you spend the first few hours of the game in
all done

due to a dumb quiz i make, i spend far to long looking at far to many different games
It's a very unique game.

it's really interesting to see all the elements from original god of war they brought back for the new ones
What did Persephone do I can't remember
wife of hades she tried to end world cause she hated herself
the shield in this one is one of them but also the narrative elements of Kratos trying to free himself from what he perceives himself to be, a monster, as well as Kratos' roots of his distrust towards Olympians and Gods in general due to all the betrayal from their part
O
kratos kills her and it explains atlas holding up the world
Persephone allowed Kratos to reunite with his daughter if he gave all his power away so he could cleanse his soul, but she took that chance to free Atlas and pretty much try to destroy the entire world, so Kratos had to choose between letting everything die or abandon his daughter
^ the long version
Either way he doesn't win, either everything dies, including his daughter, or he has to forsake his daughter forever and abandon her once again
Kratos killing all the Greek gods makes sense because in actual Greek mythology they were all dicks (except for my main man Dionysus), but most Norse gods were actually pretty chill comparatively
Aphrodite is the only one that lives lol
yeah shes the only one never killed by kratos
because the devs used her as the NSFW minigame the original trilogy had
o
2deep4me
oh this also plays into the whole narrative arc of prophecies and destiny in GOW 4 and Ragnarök
also as stated yeah you really dont feel sorry for greek gods by the end
she gets nsfw preference I suppose
though saying ''Kratos didn't kill her'' is not saying much
Even Dionysus??????
I don't think Aphrodite survived anyways
I like how there's a lore explanation for Kratos losing his powers between GoW 3 and 2018

Spoilers for Ragnarok I guess
I love how Kratos is like ''I don't have time for your games Aphrodite'' but then she starts rolling around in the bed and he's like
Is Christopher Judge also Kratos' voice actor in the first 3?
Nope
Aw
The original trilogy also had a very different original ending planned
What was originally supposed to happen
kratos a norse and egyptian themed kratos were suppose to go east to be the 3 three wise men from the bible.
representing the death of polytheism
theirs refrences to it in GOW2 but it was changed cause it really didnt fit the theme of the story

lol that's kinda silly
but I'm hoping they'll keep it for future games
maybe after we're done with the Norse pantheon we can move on to the Egyptian ones
I mean since we already are in the Norse part of the world
The devs said ragnarok was the end of norse saga a while back because they didnt want a trilogy to take 10 years to finish
so will likely get a new pantheon next GOW saga
I feel completely differently and think it's awesome lol
Mmmm that's slightly disappointing since I feel like there's more to explore from the Norse gods, I felt like Ragnarok didn't quite explore all of norse mythology to its fullest, but I honestly understand them wanting to play around with different ideas and not take like a full generation of games to get to the next game
maybe we'll go on some roadtrips with Tyr
get in some trouble with other pantheons and gods

bash some skulls in, who knows
Note to self: Tyr lives

i wouldnt mind them doing a prequel series where kratos goes to egypt first to escape greece
Theres so many mythologies they could do
I mean... I assume the place were norse gods are is literally in the opposite direction to Egypt
I still don't know how that even works
But there are apparently some details from between gow 3 and gow 4
Yeah

And he met Shovel Knight on the way
Yeah I think in the novels they say he pretty much just... walked
cursed to walk the earth forever
I'm having a tough time thinking of mythologies cuz they already did Greek and Norse and those are my favourites
Egypt is the easiest
Oh yeah Kratos battled a hippo in his journeys
I mean Egyptian gods or Japanese gods are easily the best next choices
I was also thinking Hinduism could be cool
I guess I just don't know what else they're gonna do with Kratos anymore
I mean they could easily end it here
Mario shows up at the end and wins
I knew it
What a guy
:0
and have him trying to move on but every place he settles down the gods of that area have heard what he did and cause problems for him,
I guess that would work... but I wouldn't want more prequels
After seeing so much sm64 content, that specific model of mario is like a complete different entity for me
it's really charming to me

I also love that the second Kratos dares threaten him or talk back he immediately goes into personal attacks and attempts to dig into your head because he just can't stand people going against him

Nintendo is doing a good job of slowly making themselves an enemy of their own fans.
It's not really anything new from nintendo, they've been doing it for far too long
Yeah exactly, they kinda already are their fan's worst enemy
I got no clue how Nintendo has maintained such a faithful fanbase
game good
at best they're out of touch and too harsh, at worst they're downright evil

and most of us who enjoyed Nintendo's games have never been personally impacted by their behavior toward fanworks

I'm not aware of it until people on here complain about it

Yea I constantly hear that Titanfall 2 is one of the best games ever made but I've never played it
it's a skill-based movement shooter released in a time where that kind of shooter was dead
Also Titanfall 2 probably doesn't have Doomguy in it so how could it be the best game ever made
It's alright
Is it as good as Mario 64
never played it
Oh
Titanfall 2 was a lot of fun though I've had no urge to play it again
there's no meaningful comparison to Mario 64
I don't generally play multiplayer shooters so I can't comment on that part, but the campaign is really solid and fun, if a bit short
They're both video games
there's platforming aspects in titanfall I guess?
wall run, slide
and do all that while shooting dudes
what we often call parkour these days
Parkour like in Minecraft
I don't think you do parkour in Minecraft
parkour in minecraft has historically been just jumping from block to block
recently though you can get much more creative
Yes they are called that, but you just like, jump like in any other map
Minecraft players use the term "parkour" to refer to user-created content involving platforming challenges, but Minecraft the game contains none of the mechanics we're referring to like wall runs and multiple jumps and sliding and grabbing and so on
Who would win in a race Usaine Bolt or Sonic
minecraft parkour is where I first learned the word parkour, but now I have no idea why that term stuck
Me too!
You don't have access to advanced movement like wall run, grappling hooks, slides and stuff like that I assume, you just become good at the good ol' jumping and running in MC maps I assume
I think Minecraft got big around the same time parkour mechanics were growing in popularity in the AAA space, so the term got used for the closest Minecraft could get to it
A more accurate term is probably just platforming maps
Mario
Man Signalis is fucking great
It's like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Nier, and some other games all bundled together in a nice, horrifying package
this could easily be a contestant for goty for me
It's probably the best survival horror game ever made in a while
and I say that knowing that RE2R wasn't that long ago
and RE8 too
I've heard only good things
it is simply a masterpiece, simply put
nothing more to say, if anyone here likes survival horror like resident evil or silent hill even a little bit, Signalis is a no brainer
I have been thoroughly enjoying it
it's on my wishlist
of course right now my priority is
oh
well I have only ever played RE4
I've seen LPs of... the 2 and 3 remakes, 6 and 7 I think
Same
RERE is one of the best games ever made imo
I've only seen playthroughs of 7 and 8
it's hammy but gameplay wise it's a masterpiece
It's spooky, the descriptions and puzzles are on point
it's hard, but not in a frustrating way
Of course it's hammy it's Resident Evil
Idk if i'd call it my favorite game but I would say it's one of the best
I think it's easily the best RE game ever made
2 and 3 are great. new 2 is great, new 3 is okay. 4 is fun.
5+6 suck, 7 is great, 8 is good
CV is . . . I don't know
Between good and great?
oh I right I saw an RE8 LP too
I think 6 is a good action shooter
took a while to remember it, they start blurring together after a while
I consider RE4 one of the best games ever made
I just finished that actually
Revelations really tried to bring back the horror to the shooter formula
I had a blast
Revelations 2 was really, really good for me
RE4 is a good game but
Moira was a really fun character
I'm really excited for RE4R
It heralded the decline of RE into 5 and 6
I suppose
Is it more fun that 1? Maybe, but it's less good, imo
It's more game-y
which isn't BAD it's just not what I want
I disagree but I can't articulate why I think so
is it bad that I only know that re revelations exists because one of the Guinness world records gaming edition books showed that they misspelled "revelations" on the cover?
4 is basically the only good action RE
I mean whether or not what came after RE4 is bad or good doesn't really take away from the quality of RE4
and that it's how I learned the word "revelation" lol
I think RE Revelations and Revelations 2 are really good
This is RE8 erasure and I won't stand for it
That's true, but it's still. . . not what I want from RE

I want survival horror
Resident Evil was steering towards action horror since RE2
RE3 already had a dedicated dodge button
and you were a supercop
Like Robocop????
The only pure horror one was RE1 and RE2 but it stops being super horror after the middle portion
If we're not judging 4 by 5 and 6 we can't judge 3 by 4 either
It's still scary, it's just action-horror now
and despite the dodge button 3 retains the survival aspect
I still want to play RE3 because I think RE3R was a bad game
RE3R wasn't good, no
RE2R was, i'd say
RE2R was almost the perfect mix, I'd say
it was action-y ENOUGH
But also like
not so actiony it became action rather than survival
I don't count the resident evil 'remakes' as substitutes for the originals though, they're re-imaginations with new plots and almost in their own complete different universe
and the gameplay is not always the same
what did they do to re3r that made it not as good?
They're not, no
I don't like how they handled the A and B scenarios in RE2
Anyways no one should listen to my horror game opinions because FNAF 1 is my favourite horror game
Not in a good way
It feels like a step down from the PS1 title which had a lot more interactions and fun ways to affect the others campaigns
For example you could leave guns for Claire in your Leon campaign
RE2 2019 is literally just the same campaign
with a different character
It's not as interesting, I'll give you that
I am also a pretty strong defender of fixed camera for survival horror and never felt like the over the shoulder really added anything to RE2's remake
I like fixed angle too
I still wish and long for a true remake like the original RE1
URGH that'd be awesome
I like judicious use of fixed angle. It really depends.
But I don't think it's ever happening again
I even disliked it on God of War of all games
The modern gamer can't handle the fixed angle
even when it's better for the game, i.e. in RE1
A lot of people want a remake of RE1 now which is just beyond me
Like in the style of RE2
There was fixed camera for GoW???
just play the remake that already exists it's literally the fucking perfect Resident Evil game
Honestly, I would take it
Uhhh every single god of war game had fixed cameras
Oh
It wont be as good but
I'll still take it
RE4RE tho
Looks like RE4 but more survivaly maybe? I'm tentatively hopeful
I'm really excited
re1r is like super dirt cheap even for the HD remastered version of the remake, not buying that and playing it is something only a fool would do, even the entire structure and story is unchanged, barring additions for the better like crimson heads
I did just finished RE4 VR which was REALLY fun
They kept the cheesy one liners thank god
but it's VR so
Honestly I just want RE9 now
No more remakes please
yamenasai
I want to see Jill again
What
I don't know what that word means
(I'm still looking forward to the Dead Space remake
)
I forgor that wAs happening
I heard people complain about Dead Space Remake because it's... ''too dark''...?
2 and 3 did a pretty good job of setting up a new universe that makes more sense

Dark tonally or dark as in you can't see
but it's not out yet
I'm hoping that re4re carries on with the plot
and then we can get versions of 5 and 6 that don't suck
I'm like yeah, you're exploring a gigantic spaceship that just crashed into another spaceship...
and THEN we'll be back on track
I do also want deadspaces
a remake of RE5 and 6 would be silly for me
I liked deadspace too
It'll loop back around and then we'll get remakes of 7 and 8
I don't want a remake of 5 and 6 i just want the plot of RE to not suck
They can always just ignore those games, god knows many franchises have done it
it made sense up through CV
or retcon stuff
but going all the way back is just not the optimal choice for me
just move forward already
I have no strong feelings about any of the RE plots I've seen
I liked 7 and 8s
I don't even deny that RE's plot could be improved upon, I just don't want them to reimagine the entire franchise lol
Ethan is my second favourite RE protagonist
I get that the later ones are often sillier or more extreme, but at least in all the ones I've seen I didn't really care about any of it beyond it providing excuses for the next gameplay segment
I love RE but let's be honest, the plot is pretty generic.
It's just good enough to be amusing while not getting in the way of the exploration and the surviving
the plot was hardly ever the main appeal or the point, it was serviceable and good enough, it wasn't trying to be anything too deep
and it succeeded at what it was
Every bad thing that happens is Umbrella or a subsidiary, which are almost cartoonishly evil, and there is the whole wesker thing which is basically The Terminator
it was just background information on what you were doing
it only really started getting out of hand after RE4, like most things in the franchise
it's no secret that the whole military shooter action era of the mid to late 2000s influenced Capcom's decisions
they thought it'd be a good choice
they thought wrong
Yeah I'm not saying it's bad, just that people don't play RE for the story.
RE1's plot feels like a mystery you unravel through all the notes you read, it's intriguing and interesting, at least to me
you really feel that confusion of ''what the hell is happening here? why are we here? what information is being whitheld from us?''
it's not super deep and complex, it's quite simple, but it's cool and it doesn't get in the way
RE1 was not original as a plot, but it was probably the one that had more to tease, given that it was the 1st one and we weren't familiar with what caused the whole thing at the time
It's still clichè but we didn't know which clichè of the many in the horror genre they went with, so it was still kind of a surprise
I actually haven't touched OG RE2 in a long time so I can't speak of it, but I assume it's pretty much the same plot as the reimagination of 2019
with Leon and Claire getting roped up in secret spy and umbrella bussiness
which leads Leon to become a supercop for the gvmnt and Claire to search for her brother
simple, nothing much
To be clear, I like RE story and I especially support them going bonkers with it for and after RE4
They probably realised they can't tell the exact same story more than 3 games in a row
I think RE3 2020 did something interesting with introducing Jill's nightmares, I hope they do that in RE4
Re's story doesn't NEED to be deeper than a surface level conflict with terrorists but it can be
Leon can be haunted by his memories of Raccoon City and he could be carrying a lot of guilt and trauma from that event
Especially when he gets infected, especially then
IDK if it would fit RE4 tone that much, but maybe it'd work
IDK I'd have to see it
Well that's kind of it isn't it, RE4's original tone is great and everyone loves it but when you think about it in the context of a rookie cop who gets roped up in this massive catastrophe event and suddenly he's taken out of his normal life to become a secret agent...
he'd probably be a little fucked up
granted I think Leon is currently an alcoholic on the latest timeline
so that kinda makes sense
That said, to be clear, it might be clichè but it isn't boring.
They mostly play the horror genre clichè straight but they have fun with it, they are self aware, they have crazy characters that are incredibly entertaining, lots of showmanship on display, it's a very entertaining mix
Yeah, the ones who are trying to take themselves a bit more seriously are 7 and 8
what with Eveline's whole deal
I fucking hate Eveline
they really tried to make Mia look like a good person too
that was so so weird
I don't consider 8 serious at all personally
The DLC kinda is
Didn't play the DLC yet
I sorta missed this whole conversation because some scrubs made me play discord golf
I might at some point
Which is a shame because I have lots to say abou tit
RE has good plot in the way FNAF has good plot: it's only fun if you dig way too deep and ignore everything else
Lol
anyway
Speaking of the base game tho, 8 is extremely quirky IMO, I don't mind if they want to do a DLC that skews a bit more serious for those put off from the literal 4 bosses
I liked that they tied the plagas to Nemesis
Ala Dark Souls
It was a cool idea and helped fix some shittiness around the plot
Each which looks like came out from a marvel comic
If people get put off by wacky bosses in resident evil... then resident evil is probably not the game for those people
I love 8 so much
(which I loved btw, it's exactly my jam)
I remember so many people who played DMC5 for the first time and literally actually dropped the game and said it sucks because Dante started dancing
Did they skip the intro or something?
The one in which they shoot demons while on a jumping van
wheeze
part of the reason I watched an RE6 LP was to see why everyone was being so harsh on the game at the time, and I think it was when I got to the part where you fight a giant zombie t-rex boss from a moving train that I went "ok I 100% understand the reactions to this now"
yeah but the entire van scene is totally different, a lot of people can easily find it cool
it's quite clearly a homage to DmC's intro with Dante dressing up while his van is being torn apart
but, you know, in a better game
It might be cool but it's also definitely not serious at all
It kinda is I guess, it just portrays Nero as a badass but there is a certain light hearted nature to it with Nico smoking a cigarrete in slow mo
As a sidenote, I feel DmC was okay
Not special but the reaction to it was definitely disproportionate
it's not serious but it's not too goofy either, not like Dante dancing like Michael Jackson
But we're talking about the franchise were Dante used to fight demons on a motorcycle, on the air
Devil May Cry is so special because even though it's silly and goofy it's still badass and manages to tell a good story, nothing revolutionary, it's just well executed
and then uses the motorcycle as a weapon
Correct!
Ok I feel like you say that bit is not goofy because you are desensitised from Devil May Cry at this point.
There is a bit in which she hit 2 demons and use the windshield wiper to wipe them away
he also jumps on top of a rocket and flies it like a skateboard
No no, listen
I get it, I said it too, it's light hearted
I've never played or watched any of the DMCs so I had to double-check that we weren't talking about Bayonetta
But I don't feel like it's the same as Dante dancing like Michael Jackson with strobelights in the background while they're talking about how the demon king will literally suck up the blood of the world
https://youtu.be/qiiW2lKu-og?t=113 I need a second opinion

I mean Bayonetta is kind of the same cup of tea, but I feel like DMC is some excellent tea that you come back to everytime, while Bayonetta is a one-time type of tea that you kinda don't feel like it's worth revisiting afterwards
to me, anyways
DMC always had much better stories and a way more fun cast of characters
This is pretty badass ngl
Bayo 3 was a complete disappointment
Yes that's the point, but it's also very goofy
Like I feel it's a massive "leave any idea of this game being serious at the door" sign
(I did try the original DMC a loooong time ago but bounced off it so fast it doesn't really count)
DMC1 is the goat
I basically got into bayo because it was DMC but girl
DMC1 is a pretty good game
I think it's overrated personally, but it's still very good
I never see people mention DMC1 at all personally, they always bring up DMC3
But only because people have it in such high esteem
I always see people bring up DMC2 🤔
my brief time with DMC1 felt like it was from the era where the first game of a series was the rough and unpolished one that the sequels just did better
I'm gonna be honest I actually like DMC2 but it's only because it was my first DMC as a kid, but it's an overall terrible game
I don't know DMC well enough to tell which one people are bringing up most of the time
3 I feel is better, but not by much.
There is definitely space for subjectivity and I wouldn't scream in horror if someone told me 1 was their favourite
definitely, it's the first of its kind and it's very limited in comparison to what you can do in DMC3
Does this franchise have any good games
literally every game except DMC2 and DmC are fantastic
I'm also pretty sure that much of the point of DMC is unavailable to me because of lack of skill
Detroit Metal City
I mean, you could watch some cutscenes for the story, it's not the main appeal buut.. it's fun, it's a good story, good characters
but the main meat will always be the gameplay
it's the main draw after all
I feel like DmC was way better than 2 at the very least
Yeah no question about it, DmC has a terrible story but the gameplay was admittedly fun
Not by gameplay maybe, but it was definitely more interesting
Was DMC2 that bad by gameplay=
I played it so long ago that I actually don't know anymore
I'll say it again, and I do not exaggerate in the slightest, DMC2 is literally nothing
I played it again entirely both campaigns like, a couple years back?
I think even in 2021
There's nothing about that game that is salvageable at all
The music!
The only thing that is good, actually
Next Version of my music this time is now to 45.00 minutes!!
Also I liked DmC story well enough, to be honest.
Also I really liked the real world getting distorted
When fights started
There are cool elements about DmC and almost all of them were brought over to DMC5 which is a great idea by me, but I have nothing positive to say about DmC's story
I feel like it does a very poor job to say the least in adapting the story and characters of the original DMC games, and the story as a standalone game doesn't work
Also it was kind of cool that the story for once, kinda concerned itself with the real world.
Like, the fact that the point of the demons in that one is controlling humanity through the media and food and shit like that, it was an original approach for a DmC, probably a bit more though out on that specific aspect
Pretty much in all the other DMC games humans aren't even brought up at all and the demons objectives are either nebulous or specifically concern Dante or one of the other main characters
It's a story about fambly
It was a fresh approach
I never felt like it was an approach that was needed, and again I still maintain that it was executed poorly as a standalone story, the concept is fine, but it's just not the right game for it
I also have absolute zero respect for DmC's director either
DmC is not a game that celebrates the original games' themes and characters, the director of DmC has actively gone against the original games even before starting development of DmC
He has no respect for Devil May Cry
I feel it was executed about as well for any of the other DMC games, the gameplay was worse than any other DMC except 2 tho, so there was that
It was okay at best
and I don't play DMC for okay gameplay
Nah the story of even DMC1 is better executed than DmC, saying DMC3 was executed the same as DmC is just wrong in my respectful opinion
DMC3 is vastly more interesting than DmC
It has a way more interesting main rival in Vergil, who goes through his own arc with Dante and Lady is her own character that goes through her own trials that mirrors Dante's as well
the one supporting character in DmC, which I even forgot her name, does absolutely nothing
she's a pretty one dimensional character and Dante and Vergil are too
IDK, story in DMC is backdrop, I wouldn't say that any of the DMC stories are especially incredible.
They are a good time to give context between levels but I never felt I was super close to any of the characters, other than having a good time when they were going badass in action scenes
I respectfully disagree I think the stories of the DMC games, especially DMC3 and DMC5 are fantastic
I think saying DMC1 and DMC4's stories are fine is perfectly okay because those are definitely some of the most okay-est games when it comes to story and characters, but DMC3 and DMC5 are on a level of their own
Subjectivity and all that, 3 has great atmospthere at the very least so there is that.
I do agree that 3 especially come the closest to actually have a good story, Dante even has a character arc, a technology before never heard of in a Devil May Cry
I mean whether or not people like or dislike the games is subjective sure but whether or not the games have well executed or good stories I feel like it's not
I'm joking but it's actually rare in games to see character arcs
DMC1's is overall pretty good because it's just well executed, it's nothing too deep and it's just a pretty straightforward revenge story but it has its little hoops and toys around with some emotional moments with Dante and Nero Angelo's relationship as well as Trish
just like a lot of sonic games pre sonic boom
DMC2 exists
and DMC3 is just great, all of the characters in that game are great and they all serve a purpose
Dante and Vergil's arcs and their dynamic is super well done, and Lady and Arkham's is too, the only bad part is that while this is only the beginning for Dante and Vergil, Lady feels like her journey is already over
she doesn't do much of anything in DMC4 and 5 unfortunately, but her journey in DMC3 is pretty good
You really come to appreciate just how well written and good DMC's story and characters is when you compare it to something like Bayonetta especially Bayonetta 3 which is just a mess
if you really want a character action game that just has a story for simply having some background noise, oh boy, Bayonetta 3 is your example
that game is a mess
I mean...you say it's well written, and I'll respect your opinion, but I don't feel like characters have more than one dimension in 3 with maybe the exception of Dante that come to be more responsible through the story.
And maybe Vergil after he gets his ass betrayed by the most obvious traitor that ever lived
I don't think it's necessarily a fault of the game, it's not something I expect from a DMC game to go deep into the characters, it's fine as it is but I wouldn't consider it an especially amazing story personally
Vergil never really trusted Arkham, he was just using him so I don't think it was a surprise that Arkham was a traitor
And I don't feel like Dante is one dimensional at all, it starts off feeling that way until Dante meets Lady which completely changes his vision and focus to the point where at the end he's actively trying to help her out because he understands her pain as they both have pretty complicated familiar issues to say the least
Yes Dante is the one dude that changes through the story
You have this one kid who is so traumatized by his mothers' death and him being left for dead when he was young and who idolizes his father so much that he's so obsessed with getting stronger to the point where he doesn't care about anything else, the other one doesn't want anything to do with that and he hides away all that by being a wacky stupid idiot who eats pizza and kills demons for fun
even in DMC3 there's moments where Dante shows his true colors especially with Lady
What
To each their own, I don't feel like the game showcase this depth of character, but I'm happy you took away more than I did from the story
the story is never really the main point so it's not nearly as cinematic or as deeply written as other more narrative driven experiences but everything is there and it's especially apparent in any DMC5 related material like the game or the prequel manga with V, which especially delves more into these aspects
that's why I'll always say that while DMC is not a masterpiece in writing the games are well written
it's a good story and good characters, it's executed well
Yeah as I said, I don't think the game does for me what it does for you, I don't see that level of depth in the writing, but I don't think the game is on the hook for delivering that
I'm not playing a narrative focused game, an okay story is above average for this genre, and I don't expect it to blow my socks off.
But also I wont come away thinking super highly of the narrative in particoilar
Of the game as a whole, for sure
Still, to not go in circles a bunch of times, happy to have heard your perspective on it

I'm admittedly not going into as much detail as I could because I don't do well with these conversations where I don't have enough time to think what I wanna say and compile all the necessary information beforehand so I'm going off of what's on the top of my head right now
I guess at the end of the day I'll just say I agree that the games are not focused in narrative, I just think they do a good job with it
Makes sense
There's a Twitter page called "Etika Memories" and every time I see them post it makes me really sad. Etika was such a positive voice in the Nintendo community and it sucks without him.

just full of excuses and justifications for nintendo's shortcomings, this happens aaaaall the time, people make valid complaints about pokemon but then comes the people that are like ''no it's fine actually just shut up and stop complaining the games are perfect in every way''

You'd think that in 2022 if you pay for a full priced game you'd receive a high quality product with no major game breaking glitches and bugs (that have reportedly happened to countless players something that didn't happen before)
but hey what do I know I'm no bussiness man

That article saying about refunds is only from one (not very well known to me) source. I’m not saying they are wrong but this would be historic if refunds are indeed taking place. Though remember Pokémon is not a full fledged Nintendo franchise as they own only a portion of The Pokémon Company, with the rest owned by Game Freak and Creatures, though I imagine Nintendo do exert a big chunk of influence what with the console exclusivity etc.
To the average person Pokémon is seen as a Nintendo franchise and lately the franchise is heavily tanking their reputation, they surely need to step in and do something about this going forward
Nintendo has pretty much no actual control over pokemon games
that is why they come out the way they come out
I wouldn’t say they have no control, but the problem is Pokémon is a separate company that relies only on Pokémon content to keep afloat. This is why you see new Pokémon games almost on a yearly basis which for a team as small as Game Freak by modern standards is just untenable, they either need a huge injection of cash and resources, or they need much more time between games so they can be released in a fit state.
The problem is, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have sold gangbusters (from UK sales data anyway), so there’s been little incentive to actually change things as the bottom line is still super healthy, which begs the question of how bad will things have to get before the vast majority turn away from the franchise.

Now I could dismantle the holy roman empire for another achievement, or I could play with it for a while because I have not done so before

Wtf even was the first screenshot? Nobody is gonna manage to guess this within the first guess. Literally nobody.

Try to name the game shown in the screenshots in 6 guesses or less!
it was the Dark Souls of guessing games
I mean, you can try
Somebody here guessed it
game has a very unique skybox
https://youtu.be/kgivEvHjHNM when your build is so strong you literally kill death only to encounter another death
Not really
It's highly unremarkable in my opinion
this GtG is the first time upon which it has been remarked

The feature where you get double damage for every 8 (5) skills you play is so fun
Basically means you only need one attack and a lot of skills
it is highly unremarkable, if i hadnt been talking about it the day before and the ||planet wasnt visible|| i wouldnt have got it
oh boy, time for me to be disappointed by the sales
faque
oh well thanks for the reminder, managed to grab SAO Fatal Bullet and the DLCs before the sale ended, doubt the black friday sale will be anywhere near as good as 80% off
the sao games are always so close to being great they all have a certain edge of jank though
Sale is live
good haul i think
Oh yeah risk of rain is owned by gearbox now
melty bloooooooood
god, I remember playing Risk of Rain with my buddy years ago like in 2014
I was so surprised back when Risk of Rain 2 was released because I didn't expect that to happen at all
og Risk of Rain was the shit
Kitty! \o/

Sony has their Black Friday sale up also
Hahahha
Batman is dead. A new expansive, criminal underworld has swept the streets of Gotham City. It is now up to the Batman Family - Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin - to protect Gotham, bring hope to its citizens, discipline to its cops, and fear to its criminals.

Been out for a month and already 40% off. Yikes
Lol
Gotham Knights more like Gotham Yikes
Was it? They always marketed as very much NOT Arkham at all
Well, from what the devs themselves said, they very much weren't trying to make an Arkham game
now, whether or not that translates into the final product is another thing, because even Spiderman PS4 feels like an Arkham game due to how influential that franchise has been
People were expecting Arkham, the devs were saying they didn't want to do Arkham and it wasn't an Arkham game, but it still feels like an Arkham game just.... much, much worse
I remember playing Spider-Man Remastered and thinking the combat is a rehash of Arkham Asylum
Gotham Knights was pretty fun, the performance issues is what kind of killed the game.
It was said to not be related to the Arkham games at all
fun fact: warhammer 40k: darktide? very good, and its still the beta
Good, good. I was rather excited for it; I'm glad it's being received well.
New Alien Game ?!?
Maybe it will be a sequel to Alien Isolation ?
It s coming in 2023 🤩
I swear , the Alien is one of the most annoying and horrifying creatures in a game
Oooo
Looking forward to photorealistic horror
I hope it will take notes from alien isolation
Well its.....fine I guess
It is one of the games of all time
Try to name the game shown in the screenshots in 6 guesses or less!
I actually guessed the ||entire franchise|| for this one
The graphics looked familiar but I was a bit off as I never played it

❌Halo: Combat Evolved

❌Immortals: Fenyx Rising

❌Pikmin 3

❌Xenoblade Chronicles X

✅Xenoblade Chronicles 3

"Rumor is that they seek protection from the Bohemian"
But Bohemia is the emperor of the HRE
I AM A SLAYER OF GODS
We weren't able to go hands-on with Pokémon Scarlet/Pokémon Violet until the game launched, but having compared it to Pokémon Arceus and a bunch of Switch open world titles, it's clear that this game has severe problems and should not be sold in this state. Oliver Mackenzie has the DF review.

Ooof
Yeah that’s unsurprising
What baffles me is that Arceus looks better than the mainline titles here (and don't get me wrong even that is hardly stunning), that blows my mind that the side experimental game has better technical competence than your bread and butter.
