Oh I never cared much about cheevos myself
"cheevos", I like that
I think I picked that up from Pat and Woolie
amongst other things, like my love for fighting games and DMC
dmc is great
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HpuiodIULQ what is the absolute chaos of this game
I laughed until I lost my voice during this

Welcome to Miriamโs story.
Based on BioWareโs video game franchise โDragon Ageโ, Dragon Age: Absolution explores mature subjects concerning freedom, power, and corruption set against the backdrop of adult animation.
Only on Netflix, December 9.
ABOUT DRAGON AGE: ABSOLUTION
With great power at stake, a group of mages, fighters, and thieves go...
they rlly said "fuck dwarves never heard of them" ey

gotta love cass n leliana showin up tho
Honestly this trend of various game properties getting anime has been great
yep
Definitely worked far better than whatever the film industry was doing with it
The curse of bad video games adaptations was broken
I can't wait until indie games like the binding of Isaac, shower with your dad simulator and lemonade tycoon get anime adaptations
It's been broken since Sonic, of all characters, showed Hollywood how it's done.
Also, yaaaay, more footage of this show! I've been very excited for it since the reveal. I'm not a huge Dragon Age fan, but this looks incredibly interesting. :D
I just hope that it doesn't require game knowledge for me to jump in.
The problem with these games and modding is that any sort of mods that change the game automatically disable achievements, meaning that if you ever want to conveniently earn achievements, you have to choose to cheat the achievements in or not mod the game
Paradox requires Ironman mode with a checksum for game integrity before the game can award achievements, and it's the worst
That was brought up recently. Vicky 3 is the first to not require ironman mode and have specific rules set to make that happen.
That's a good change. Victoria 3 is about ten years away for me though
On the flip side, Bannerlord requires ironman and no mods, but you can mod out the line of code that enforces that.
Yeah you can mod paradox games to allow achievements and mods but it's complicated and not easy
CK3 is really strict about it. Even mods that just change UI (since not everyone has the same screen size and allows it to be seen more easily) disabled achievements because of how the checksum is done.
CK2 was fine about it but as a result of how many achievements there are, I never got around to trying big mods like Elder Kings
There's one for EU IV as well, but same deal applies for most achievements.
ah yes more Tevinter

its weird that if you look at pictures afterwards it marks them in red
Oh so you guys are ahead because you're in the future
Try to name the game shown in the screenshots in 6 guesses or less!
Damn Chip ur good at this
that or i've spent to long looking at way to many games in the process of making chipardy tm
but you dont lose anything for guessing
Well it's more like narrowing it down
I'm so lazy I don't wanna tire my baby brain out
If I have like 20 different games in mind I'd rather see one more picture
You lose respect
that was an ominous push notifaction to get
Lol
Also I probably played like only 10 games among those
So I need a little bit more hint lol
I know games, but I actually don't play a lot
there are a fair few that i haven't played but are aesthetically very distinct regardless
the first day for example

oh no, the game's getting serious now; this camera actually covers the entire room
to be fair, this is the secret society level
but because Hitman is a gritty and grounded setting, they're all billionaire assholes
sounds about right
secret society, billionaire assholes
I feel like we've done this before...

my favorite is eavesdropping on the billionaire assholes complaining about how some other billionaire asshole is behind the times or exceptionally assholey or frivolously overspending or whatever
like just now I was listening to something along the lines of "climate denial served us well at first but we all know which way the wind is blowing, so we've been planning our green transition by gobbling up smaller companies for a while now. <other guy> needs to wake up and realize nobody's bloody buying coal any more."
yeah
to be clear, this is a secret society of hyperrich people offering "survive the apocalypse" products like luxury arctic bunkers to marginally less hyperrich people
Y'know, like reality
and I am one room away from fully exploring the level so I am very ready to start killing
I think the entire plotline of the new Hitman games is entirely about assassinating hyperrich assholes
often, yeah
I don't think they try to ever portray him as a person who only goes after evil people
They definitely do in the new series
I think the new and old games do a pretty good job at telling you that 47 is simply a cold calculating assassin
๐ฆ
no feelings of guilt or sadness or passion for the killing, it's just a job
Every single assassination has a section that illustrated how whoever you're killing does bad things
47 himself doesn't seem too worried about the morality but it is true that at least in this game every target "has it coming" in some sense
Oh yeah, he has no feelings, but the people he's killing happen to be evil
I think this last mission briefing even said something like "unfortunately these two targets are collateral damage, but they have it coming anyway"
Does 47 have a romantic partner or is he single
Yeah but I feel like it has less to do with him as a protagonist or framing him as a protagonist
I really don't think he's in any sort of headspace for a relationship
I don't think 47 is capable of feeling love
Aw
like most of the dark and edgy characters you ask that about
The only character I'd ever see him having a relationship with, in any sense of the word, is Diana
I just want them to be happy Ix ๐ฉ
there are other ways to be happy
Okey does 47 have any want at all
Good question
well, at least in this specific game, they do eventually end up in a ||get payback on the unethical scientists who made me this way|| storyline
That's a pog
but I'm only on story mission 6 of 8 so there might be more, and I don't know what Hitman 1 (of the reboots) was about
I thought they already tackled that on the first game?
since the first game is all about || killing all of your ''fathers'' ||
What was the Hitman game where Agent 47 dies and then you can get up at his funeral and kill everyone
I remembered that mission as soon as Cap said it
oh is that what it was
ok well now it's about the guys who ordered them to do it I guess?
I'm a little fuzzy on it myself
I think the only ''wants'' that 47 could ever possibly have is to just lead a normal life? that's what Hitman 2 was about
but it seems he always ends up getting roped back into his profession anyways
so I guess at this point he just kinda embraced it I guess
He wants choccy milk
I can't remember what Absolution was about
ah, the John Wick arc
Real??
Play the games to find out
I have no money

the fact that the billionaire secret society ceremony begins with literal burning of money is... I don't even know, are they doing self-satire???
Nah, they're just sending money to Diablo (immortal)

OH MY FUCKING GOD
THEY PUT A HUNTER IN THAT HALLWAY
Scared the lights out of me I was not ready for that
that was fun
this is definitely not gonna crush me as soon as I turn around and face my back to it
Punch it

oh shit it actually is Silent Hill

is this... german?
Looks German to me
up until the white line translates to:
Remember the rule of 6 never carry more than 6 items
Indeed German. After that, "private ownership is a priviledge. Keep your pockets empty and your backpack light"
Hahah that's what it actually says
correct

is completely fluent in german, you see
I thought since this seems like sci fi it was some weird mix of german with something else
to create a fictional language
but no it seems like it's full german
Yeah that's full german, the damage on the bottom may make it seem weird but that's just damage
Hehehe
awesome, german is neat
seems like it's also using some kanjis here and there so it's mixed with japanese
interesting

Goddamit, I was all hyped that Sonic 2 got nominated for best adaptation only to see that it's up against Arcane
I knew I couldn't trust them
People kept telling me they were done with DLC and I should just buy the bundle that has everything
Not until Civ 7
Happy for Monolith Soft to get a nomination there and from their own IP and not just as a support studio with Breath of the Wild.
Well, Civ 7 likely got delayed due to COVID, so they need some content to keep things moving.
Apparently some leaks indicate it's another "new leaders every few months" type of release.
Once they have a final bundle that contains every piece of DLC that will ever come out I will consider if the game is worth my money
Xenoblade 3 is really good but I'm not sure it is the top game of the list.
Pretty amazing that stray got nominated

This entire situation makes me realize a couple things
number one holy fuck some people involved in the creation of games are downright evil
and number two I vastly overestimate how qualified or how much of an expert/professional one needs to be to work on games, big games
''yeah dude making the music for the game first is totally a great idea and a time saving strategy''
the guy who needs to see some gameplay/know story details to create the music:

it's such a basic concept even I know it

this fucking soundtrack
Okay I completely see what Sonic fans mean by this game having great writing
Sonic and other characters feel like actual characters with personality and not just one-note like Amy simply being obsessed with Sonic or a girlboss type character and Sonic being all quips and jokes and zero seriousness
the dialogue feels convincing and it's not just super one note, it's cool
Reshape history. Reimagine the future. This is Civilization VI: Leader Pass.
Throughout 6 DLCs that are scheduled for release between November 21, 2022 - March 2023, we will feature 12 leaders brand new to Civilization VI and 6 new takes on classic Civilization leaders.
The Leader Pass is available on Steam, Epic, Mac App Store, and iOS only. ...
New leaders are included in Civ 6 Anthology Edition

Watching ProZD's new reel video and going from "My what a strapping physique to "WOAH PAYDAY, that guy was pretty fuckin' loaded!" was definitely a shift
Is Disco Elysium good
Not necessarily true, Mania was fantastic.
...Then again, it's been 5 years since then, and 4 years since the Plus edition.
But yes, this is the first truly AMAZING 3D Sonic game since Sonic Generations, which was alllllll the way back in 2011.
And even then, Generations had a poor story and fairly basic gameplay, and I say that as someone who loved it and 100%'ed it three times.
But mayhaps that is WiiU nostalgia talking lmao
I don't know why I wasn't counting Mania on that but yes I remember Mania and I remember people loved it
I guess I'm talking about the modern 3d sonic games instead
that's a complicated question to answer
Oh, you'd be shocked at how many references there are to past events in this game. Soooooooo many.
And as for the Titans, I'll say this much: Super Sonic is truly BRUTAL in this game with how he dispatches them.
Punching right through the first one and sending it flying off its feet is tame compared to what he does to 2 and 3.
Oh hey they made || Sticks || canon
the story really seems to be setting up something like Sonic Adventure 3 with all the characters going on their own adventures
Not just ||Sticks||
that was fun, it's nothing too mind blowing but a pretty nice and fun solid sonic game with a straightforward story
They also made someone else canon, and trust me, her inclusion is 100x bigger than ||Sticks||.
||Tangle???||
nah, ||Rocks||
yeah
||Yes, Tangle from IDW is now canon to the mainline Sonic games, which means by extension ALL of IDW is canon too.||
Sonic mentions Shadow, Blaze, Jet, Rouge, Tangle and more in Sonic Frontiers

||She is gay||
I really like her design from Heroes and Prime. Heroes gives off the "sexy treasure hunter" feel, and Prime gives off the "sexy spy" feel, and neither feel too overdone.
Also, kind of hilarious how we have an entire thread for Sonic stuff but everyone is talking here, lol.

It is
I think it's the first time I enjoy music from Sonic that isn't from Crush 40
One of the best songs in ANY Sonic game, and that's saying A LOT.
A lot of people are like ''omg just like metal gear rising'' and.. I get it, sure, but nah, this game doesn't have the same type of combat as MGR, Bayonetta or DMC at all and Sonic has had metal/rock songs before
sonic heroes was mentioned
but surely some of these fights have to be references to that especially the one with the sword
though it has a bunch of DBZ references too
bro are we EVER going to see neo metal sonic and metal overlord again?
those two had my favorite character designs in the entire franchise
i mean LOOK AT THIS
I never got to the boss but I remember seeing the long transformation scene and being quite disturbed by it
Surprisingly, a lot of people really didn't like Neo's design.
WHAT
Like, it was looooooaaaaathed by the fandom.
neo metal gives super-future vibes and i love that
Disco Elysium is great but it does demand a lot of reading (it's fully voiced)
You'll love it
I think the start might be a little confusing but I'm not sure if I should describe it for you
No go ahead
I know the basic plot is that you're a detective and you've lost your memory right?
Lmao
And a big part of the first half an hour is you figuring out who the fuck you were, and that involves you choosing on a personality
Each sort of you can have different interactions with the game
Also, the game has a system where you build up various skills and each skill when utilized rolls dice to see how well you do at the given task
This varies from trying to convince someone you've got it together to beating people up and so on
I see
But the entire game is run through that format. It doesn't have a combat mode or anything
It's very unique and interesting
You can certainly try
:0
It's a pretty hard game for people who want to not fail because you can kinda fail a lot of the times but failure isn't losing
even if you fail the story keeps moving forward
but whether the game is good or not depends entirely on whether or not you enjoy what type of game it is
Do you like a shit ton of dialogue, stat checks, skill trees, exploration and mystery solving mixed with a very heavily social-political charged story and mysteries to solve?
Well boy do I have the game for you
skill trees and stat checks in a game with zero combat sounds really interesting
especially for me, since i LOVE to play as warrior-types but the kind who tries to find a more peaceful solution before going ham on everyone around me
finding the harder, more beneficial solution to a problem is more fun and satisfying sometimes

that's a nice amount of guesses
Try to name the game shown in the screenshots in 6 guesses or less!
First time it happens to me :
I was playing Need For Speed : Underground (1)
Background programs open : google chrome while I was listening music from bandcamp and Discord was open too.
The temperature of the GPU reached max 76ยฐCelsius, and while playing it doesn't go below 70ยฐCelsius.
While racing it was doing small freezes for like 1 second, randomly various times each 2 to 3 minutes.
Suddenly it went green screen and the PC made a restart by itself.
PCSX2 version 1.6.0
The iso games are in an external drive
Specs of my PC :
Processor : AMD Ryzen 5 3600X 6-Core Processor 3.79 GHz
RAM : 16.0 GB
System type : 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Windows 10 pro
Video card : AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT
Are my specs too low? Was it maybe the background programs by having them open? Or was it something else?
Looks to me like your GPU failed
The green screen is a surefire mark of the AMD GPU software crashing
5700 XT has extremely poor drivers
My friend sold it after 6 months of usage
Solution is probably don't stress the GPU so much
Alright, thanks.
Time to save money to upgrade then.
AMD GPUs expect temperatures to go that high
My 290x performed fine as long as it was at 95C or under
bruh

holy fucking shit
I just got done watching it fully and this is an actually insane situation, I knew the games industry was fucked up but this fucked up?
the fact that an executive producer can just decide to make your entire life a living hell just because they didn't like what you said even though you were totally right is absolutely insane to say the fucking least
Didn't you essentially say this yesterday or was that someone else
Ah, I was wondering where that deja vu was from
Yeah I got the gist of it at first but didn't know how deep it went
Mick is honestly a fucking trooper for dealing with this entire situation
for like two years he's been trying to solve this situation behind the scenes until there was no other choice than to go public with it, I can't imagine having people believe I'm a fraud, a hack, an incompetent artist for 2 years because some stupid manchild of an executive decided he wanted to destroy my reputation
super crazy situation and I'm willing to bet it's not even that uncommon
Certain levels of exploitation is not uncommon, no. Though I think this is a bit more on an extreme, especially the levels of demands made to him and the whack schedule and so on
I cannot believe that a company like id would have so much management/scheduling problems that they'd be so actually incompetent with the development of Eternal
It's not that far off
He was given such an impossible task since the beginning and when things went south the producer was quick to blame HIM for everything
Like it is def a more extreme example but the games industry really does whatever it wants
Or I suppose a more personally targeted one
Yeah this is such an extreme and personally targetted attack
we're talking threatening him when the OST was soon to be released that they'd go after him
harassing and doxxing him and harassing other companies he was working with to get him fired
I'd say that some of the ones we hear about being more "general" are also roughly this targeted though
trying to get him to accept a contract to never discuss or ever criticize their games ever
this is downright criminal shit
like it's not just ''oh the working conditions weren't super nice''
it's downright evil criminal stuff
Like outsourcing the design of most of a game without compensation by asking for design examples with job applications and then using them all? ๐
more like constant harassing and sharing of personal information and personal phone calls with threats of abuse and violence
Marty Stratton definitely needs some sort of disciplinary action done to him
yeah like jail time

At least we know that Atomic Heart will have banger soundtrack

Without them Mick really could become like Chriss Avelon
Slandered and forsaken
is mick working on atomic heart?
man that game is like a weird folklore tale
it's been in development for so long and there have been concept videos and stuff for so long already
I remember watching some videos on youtube of I'm assuming the animator from some creatures and some trailer ish looking stuff
Gonna wait for reviews on that. From what I'm hearing, a lot of the previews we've seen are scenes/areas that were hyperfocus worked on to look good for trailers but a large portion of the rest of the game still needs lots of work, and there's like 80 hour weeks happening...
I heard a lot of news that Mundfish is in organised chaos, but after Mick Gordon worked whole year without contract + he was making music without even levels, i understood that gamedev is crazy industry...
- Mick Gordon not only writes music, he is implementing these soundtracks into games
It is not like MGR music and you are James Christopherson, where you make Rules of Nature and then game studio must implement it, you aren't who implements this

I consciously chose a โbig, boring companyโ to do programming for instead of game dev, partially because even a decade ago it had this reputation, but also because the nature of the product/industry makes any position in it less stable than Iโm personally comfortable with
100% this. I went into college planning to go into a career in game dev. Once I learned more about that world, a cushy desk job sounded much better.
Tho, if I ever win the lottery, I'll start my own game studio. With blackjack and react hooks.

Question: are all the Soulslike games so...empty and devoid of human life? Like, every Dark Souls game has only like one or two humans in it besides the main character (from what I've seen), Elden Ring is fairly bleak but not as much as Dark Souls, etc.
No there ar epeople
Dark Souls 3 has Firelink Shrine which is the hub and there's quite a few people you can talk to
the short version is yes: part of the genre is that the narrative is often set in a declining, often post-apocalyptic world where the reason you run into monsters to fight every five feet is because the world really is an awful place; typically how things got this way is a key mystery of the story told either indirectly through the environment/enemies/mechanics, or directly but only in pieces by the few surviving characters who you maybe can't fully trust
Hollow Knight and Blasphemous are perfect examples of this narrative style outside of the Soulsbornes literally made by FROM Software
There's that one guy in Bloodborne in the wheelchair
Also you can summon real actual people right
But the short of it is yeah these games are almost always taking place in decaying hostile worlds
You can summon people in all of the games
I believe all of these Soulslikes contain something like 10-20 NPCs who you can hold a real conversation with... if you're thorough enough to even find half of them lol
I like DS1 because even though the game is like that all NPCs are very friendly
PRAISE THE SUN
They all want to see you succeed or help you out and offer their insight
DS2 goes in the opposite direction and it's so edgy it kinda kills my enjoyment
Praise the sunbutt \o/
โ๏ธ
the other corollary I really like is that these "narrative Soulslikes" typically have multiple endings, with at least one perpetuating the vicious cycle of decay and at least one (maybe? partially?) breaking the cycle, and you have to do a lot of exploration and paying attention to stand any chance of getting the "better" ending, and it's up to player interpretation whether it even is better or just harder to get
(I believe this applies to every FROM Soulsbourne, it definitely does to HK and Blasphemous)
incidentally, Jedi: Fallen Order would be an example of a game that people often call a Soulslike, but doesn't do most of these narrative tropes
Ughh... To be fair
DS2 introduced the whole cyclical aspect to the DS franchise
DS1's story works perfectly fine as a one and done type story
I thought DS1 had endings about rekindling the first flame?
DS2 and 3 retroactively introduced the cyclical aspect to DS1
Yeah you can rekindle the flame
.... Once
Who else is gonna rekindle after? You already used up all the most powerful souls you had
welp, I don't know DS well enough to dig into that, I'm just going off vague memories of youtube videos summarizing it
It's a choice between "keep the dark away for a bit longer or just say fuck it and let nature run its course"
granted, in Hollow Knight you could also easily argue "who's gonna take your place after you can't contain The Radiance any more?"
I think the broader trope of an ending in which you perpetuate the status quo still applies
ah yes, "let nature run its course" is a good way of putting it
There isn't really any indication of a cycle going on in DS1 itself but the other does apply
let me put it this way: you can have a "cycle" that's unsustainable, I did not mean to imply it could've gone on indefinitely in any of these games
When you find out there wasn't really meant to be a DS2 and 3 you realize how the whole cycle thing was just a byproduct of being forced to make more sequels
meta
Gotta justify it somehow
Fuck it, infinite cycles!
Like sequels

More sequels, more
i mean, gwyn relinked the flame with his soul, theres no reason to presume more people cant do that
By the time of DS1 there had only really been a single cycle which was Gwyn re igniting the flame that was naturally dying off which meant gods would fall, then you come along and get a choice to do another cycle, but that would burn all your souls like it did with Gwyn so there really is only enough juice for one more cycle unless you went out and lilled more gods with powerful souls
IIRC, in the "perpetuate the status quo/decaying system" endings of HK, Blasphemous, and DS1, the protagonist is taking the place of the first character to fulfill some pivotal role in the system (the Radiance vessel, the Father/Son/??? of the Miracle, the Great Lord / fire kindler)
DS2 introduced the idea of multiple cycles of flames dying and igniting again having happened
Which wasn't a thing in DS1
yeah, "cycle" in the "there's been more than just the one before you showed up" sense I believe is only a DS2+ thing, and not the Soulslike narrative trope I was trying to describe
I think Elden Ring didn't do it but all soulslike games have a trope of having the power to either change things or keep it the way they are
Just with you in charge now
Even Sekiro
And... I guess BB didn't have that
argh, I need to try Sekiro
IIRC Bloodborne was also cosmic horror, so while the endings still range from more status quo-y to more change-y, you're never at the top of the food chain with the equivalent-of-the-Old Ones
(I should really watch a proper playthrough of that)
I think in the ending where you turn into a squid you kinda go to the top of the food chain
Yeah that one is supposedly the one you are turning into the Great Ones iirc
this is really making me wish I actually liked FROM's games so I could properly experience the whole genre
I haven't played a fromsoft game in a long time
I played a bit of pirated Elden Ring but it didn't run well enough for a good playthrough
They're weird games
And most people only play for PvP apparently
I love how "Fromsoft games" usually just means souls series or something near that
Armored Core series exist
They haven't done an armored core game in a while
the real irony is I have played an Armored Core, and that also failed to grab me
It seems interesting but it also seems like a game I'd definitely not be interested in
so I get to pretend I was using that term correctly
And Evergrace
And Eternal Ring
For the PS2
Before DeS Kings Field was probably their most popular franchise
And even then DS1 was the one that got extra popular more than DeS
I keep forgetting Demon Souls exists
Oh shit they also made Kuon
what even is that game, how's it relate to the rest of all this
One of the hardest games to ever get for the PS2
Monster Hunter Diary: Poka Poka Airou Village (ใขใณใใณๆฅ่จ ใฝใใฝใใขใคใซใผๆ, Monhan Nikki Poka Poka Airลซ Mura) is a spin-off installment in the Monster Hunter series, developed by FromSoftware and published by Capcom for the PlayStation Portable. It was released in Japan on August 26, 2010. The word airou (ใขใคใซใผ, airลซ) is the Japanese equivalent of felyne (A...
developed by FromSoftware
Demons?
yes?
What do you mean how does it relate?
like, how is it similar to and different from Dark Souls?
I mean it plays nearly the exact same
is there any shared continuity or themes?
Its storyline is not connected, so Dark Souls is not considered as a sequel technically
fromsoft also made metal wolf chaos, which feels more like a capcom game as well
No, only Dark Souls has any semblance of a shared continuity and story
Every other game is unrelated
ds2 and 3 and BB have a more Demons style of gameplah
Where you go from a hub to every different area
Dark souls is a spiritual successor to demon souls, but world and story wise it's different
With the level up lady โข๏ธ
DS1 is the same but it changed things up
There's no central hub just a world with many checkpoints and no areas its just a semi open world where you can go wherever you wanted
Unrivaled level design imo
Demons divided each area where it felt more videogameh
It's literally like Mario levels you visit
They should make a Bright Souls and make it so easy that even 5yo can clear it
Are you saying the video game felt more video gamey than another video game?
How does that make sense
It's more generic and uninspired?
It makes sense because one feels more natural than the other
is this sarcasm or a sincere question?
It's different to explore a world where each area leads into another and feels like a natural exploration of a world vs literally picking which level you want to teleport into from the main hub area
Okay
Well some hardcore souls players would probably say the souls games are already too easy lol
The insufferable ones
They aren't too easy
the whole conversation around "difficulty" in Soulslikes is so tainted I try not to even bring it up
They're just right
A daunting difficulty that can me overcome through practice and is all the more rewarding for it
And the lack of difficulty options allow the developers to fine tune the gameplay into an unparalleled experience
I hate being around DS groups because everytime a game comes up in discussions there's always the dudes that go "this game was so fucking easy it's so bad" etc etc
I saw it happen with Sekiro which was the most challenging one to me
I loved sekiro
Kicked my ass but I got over it
The limited gameplay mechanics allow them to design enemies and bosses even better because they don't have to accommodate a bunch of different play styles the player might use
Most of the best bosses out of any souls like are from sekiro imo
I do tend to prefer simpler games for that reason. The more complex a game is, the more likely it ends up throwing something at me I simply cannot deal with (short of being told in advance how to not get stuck on it), or making everything so easy that there's no real challenge unless I handicap myself. The Ubisoft style of open world is especially vulnerable to this IME.
Y'all played Ragnarok?
I have not, I believe Nire has
Beat the main story the other day, got about 35 hours on my save
It's absolutely goated with the sauce
I've been playing a lot of survival horror recently and only now realized how much I love the genre
The resources management the running around gathering items leaving shit in your safe room
Dodging enemies solving puzzles

I'm a little annoyed that there's no achievement for beating it on give me god of war difficulty. I'm still going to do it, did it on my second playthrough of the last one for the armor of Zeus, but still
I watched a youtube video of it, which is obviously equivalent of playing and clearing it /j

That's why I only criticize the story of games I watched
Like Bayo 2 and GoW
I can't criticize gameplay from seeing it I really gotta feel it
Sifu is like Sekiro kinda
I'm enjoying Sifu
Nothing like the rush of a good dodge or parry
Ixrec โ 06/18/2022
of course the real reason Hollow Knight is not a Soulslike is because it has no parry button
Boss fights are easily the best part, once you get in that flow state it's so good
To be fair parrying is not nearly as much of a vital mechanic in DS as it is in something like Sekiro
I thought it was Star Wars Dark Souls
It is Star Wars Dark Souls, yeah
Jedi: Fallen Order is the only Soulslike game I've been able to get any progress in
I brought up Fallen Order earlier yeah
.
RIP Order
I don't even know if I'd call it soulslike but that's just because I hate the term
If you want soulslike... Play the souls games
Otherwise it's just a different game
I believe Fallen Order is a "Soulslike" only in the sense that the combat system is relatively slow and deliberate, and relies on you getting good at parries and dodges
which is still a meaningful sense of course, but that word means so many things now we have to be careful with it
if anything Fallen Order is more like a midpoint between Soulslike and Metroidvania (the latter in the sense of level design / in-game maps, and the sequence of abilities you gain)
It was as close to souls as sekiro is to souls
Well we haven't even decided what "Roguelike" precisely is yet, obviously we don't have a precise definition of Soulslike yet
but people want a game like it, not the game. if i want to play a roguelike, i dont just go and play rogue
I don't feel like any of the soulslike games ever really replicate the formula to a degree that warrants being called soulslike
It's always superficial stuff
But it's definitely closer to sekiro
-melee based swordplay
-parry based combat
-posture damage
-unlockable moves / items are supplementary to swordplay
-level progress is lost upon death, but completed level points remain
I think roguelike/lite is significantly better pinned down, e.g. I'd expect nearly everyone to say something about procedural generation and permadeath being core mechanics of that genre
Not the same with other genres that are slightly easier to replicate
Like metroidvanias
roguelike is also considerably older term, give it time
everyone knows the real definition of a soulslike is the iron pineapple one "if it has a dodge roll its a soulslike" ||/s||
There are very few actual rogelikes, everything nowadays is roguelite, meaning some upgrades / unlocks carry across runs
metaprogression, that's the word I was forgetting
Welcome to episode 568 of steam dumpster diving
I remember trying out the code vein demo because people said it was a souls like
It was in fact not like the souls games
At all
It was also really fucking bad
code vein is pretty soulslike though
I don't think being able to change your stats constantly is soulslike at all
You're pretty much set in your character path in those games
yeah, this sort of thing is why I never say "Soulslike" without immediately clarifying whether I'm talking about the narrative style or parry-based combat or just FROMSoft games or some other random definition
That's why I say most soulslikes only copy superficial stuff
And that's why I never use that term
I do think "Soulslike" is having a tougher time of it than most other recent genre terms because it's being applied to games with almost nothing in common with Dark Souls, or the things it has in common were never remotely unique to Dark Souls; its aggregate usage gives the impression of someone who simply never played a game they liked before DS1 and has no perspective on what else was out there
Exactly
I never got that vibe from "roguelike/lite", for example
oh I don't even know this one
Yeah no clue here either
You unlock new weapons and armor but cutting off the limbs of enemies
Super fast paced
And I love me some fast paced souls games
Bloodborne remains my number 1
I feel like DS3 tried really hard to go into BB style and it kinda messed with other playstyles
You can't really go heavy armored with huge weapons as you could in DS1
It works totally different
My first souls game was Bloodborne so I appreciated the faster pace of ds3 compared to other souls games, but I can see how people view it as a problem
I will say the lack of poise is shit
It too fast paced by design
A lot of previous playstyles are simply not viable anymore
That's why I end up prefering DS1 and thinking it's still overall the best for me
Best lore best characters best gameplay
I've always been a Metroidvania kind of person, and DS1 made an utterly awful impression on me, so most of the for-some-reason-people-call-them-Soulslike games I've played are the half-Metroidvania ones, definitely including all my favorites
Some people would classify DS1 as a metroidvania in some way
Sekiro's one I should really give a chance though, I just wasn't in the mood when it came out
yeah, I've seen people use "Soulslike" to refer to level design that makes you revisit areas after unlocking shortcuts
(which falls into that "have you played anything else?" usage I was referring to earlier)
the revisit areas isn't even really a thing in any of the dark souls games
guy who has only ever played Dark Souls games playing his second ever game
"Getting a lot of Dark Souls vibes from this"
I will say it is pretty tough. If you're not used to timing parries and such really well, I honestly recommend playing Jedi fallen order first
DS1 in specific has a lot of "oh! You can't/it'd be too difficult to go here yet, maybe.. Come back later?"
Might have idk I'm forgetful
I tried playing Dark Souls 1 and hated it
It's an acquired taste. Also fairly dated at this point
Ds3 is better for new players imo
all the Platinum spectacle fighters I've enjoyed also do a ton of parry/dodge-based combat, which I love when I can play them but I'm also pretty bad if the timing is too tight (not in the way practice would help, my reflexes just inherently suck)
I mean it's dated in the same sense Resident Evil or Silent Hill are dated but I'd still fully recommend them and they're still super good
It was just so slow
Yeab
I liked that
It gets faster on the DLC and with some weapons but overall it's slow ish
DS3 is more fast paced
The souls games did become increasingly faster in combat, and my boomer brain can't keep up anymore
It's probably my zoomer brain

(for the record, my issues with DS1 have nothing to do with the combat being "slow" lol)
Well that's where all my problems stem from, maybe I'll try one of the newer ones sometime cuz I think the approach to storytelling and it's world are super interesting
And Bloodborne has all that eldritch horror I'm obsessed with
Bloodborne PC when
How many fps
I mostly know stuff from when it released, I didn't keep up
I see
On the PS4 it was 30 FPS, I think that when the pro came out it was still capped at 30 but at least it was a stable 30 and not a "more like 25 when you are lucky" 30
That's not bad at all
That's horrible
I'm the type that can't tell the difference between 30 and 60 unless you put the footage side by side, and sometimes not even then
Gen you have to remember that I primarily play my video games on the Switch
For a fast paced action game that actually felt like moving underwater
before Youtube supported 60fps videos, the whole framerate debate might as well have been internet folklore to me
I can totally tell the difference between 30 and 60 but 30 never really bothered ne
I'm not elitist, I don't really give a shit about framerate, but under 60, in an action game, just feels bad
It starts being a problem with 20 fps buuut.... I've played games on low fps all my life
I'm talking played through DS1 at like sub 30 fps
On a keyboard
If it's not an action game, or a shooter, it's whatever.
I play Doom Eternal at 30fps
sub-20 is also where it starts bothering me, but in practice sub-20 is also never a framerate that games run at stably; it's the wobbling between different rates that's really obnoxious
I played through eternal with stutters and low fps too
It's a miracle I finished that game
Some games like Elden Ring are "looks great when not in action but as soon as you fight a boss or multiple enemies get ready and take a seat for the powerpoint presentation" games
sadly I had quite a bit of frame dropping during my recent MP trilogy replays, but that was me running a Wii emuator on a low-end gaming laptop so of course it's entirely my own fault for not owning a Wii
Perhaps

oh I'm very aware of that
the Primes in particular have an issue where the map is much laggier than the regular game, apparently because the map screen works by loading in the entire world
Ixrec did you play Doom Eternal
we have definitely talked about this in great detail before lol
I have a terrible memory this is established canon
weren't you the one who didn't mind the Marauders?
the design's cool, and as a miniboss it's not bad
as a regular enemy they completely break the way the game is designed to be played
When they show up in regular encounters? Fuck that
Have you guys fought them when there's a buff totem active or they're possessed by spirits
it's been so long since I played eternal I don't even remember those mechanics
I played doom eternal at a stuttery 120 fps
Spirits were a DLC thing
ok, I was thinking the totem at least sounded familiar
And I think buff totem Marauders were also only DLC
I think the Marauders are just okay now
There's dlc?
Yea!
yeah, Cap's constantly reminding me that I never played The Ancient Gods DLC
WHAT
There are obnoxious sound effects on the Marauder post TAG2
I thought the added sound effect was good for new players who don't understand how Marauder's work, but I agree that there should be an option to turn it off if you want
It felt like they went back on having the Marauder be the git gud type enemy
So you all want to play a game?
I can't remember what the marauder was
You mean there's an audio ping to tell you when to attack? The bright green flash wasn't enough?
is that what they were? lol
evil jigsaw laugh
Anyways don't criticise my favourite game or I actually might cry
Nire: Marauders are the enemy that's straight-up invincible until they do certain attacks, which forces you to just kinda stand around and wait, which is where all the complaining comes from
I remember killing a marauder in one of the challenge thingies. Was like, kill a marauder and 2
and you got like 30 seconds
Worst Marauder is the one at the start of Taras Nabad, getting hit by the fodder demonโs projectiles that confuse him and then the player
I was seriously thinking the marauder was gonna be a single returning entity that was gonna be a mini boss every time
But nope, just regular enemy
Kinda underwhelming
I can add "only human on Earth who likes Marauders" next to "only human being on Earth who likes the all the Star Wars sequels" to my resume
I love how it started as a boss and ended as just a hard enemy
This challenge took so damn long to do I swear
But I like Marauders, just pre-TAG2 Marauders
Marauder fanclub
I honestly just kinda brute force marauders since they're always kinda bullshit when I fight them
Even then thereโs stuff I really like that was added in that DLC
The crosshair HUD thing is a perfect addition
Dot too small
Eternal never clicked for me as well as 2016 did, so by the time Marauders were not just a miniboss I really had no idea what to do with them besides run around killing every other enemy first and then stand around waiting for one of them to stop being invincible
What are you some sort of Switch player
But there's so many QoL improvements in Eternal and enough things I do enjoy that I ended up playing more of Eternal
I'm kind of the opposite in that I can't really go back to 2016 now lol
very nice discord, didnโt mean to reply to that message
I keep pressing A to dash but instead I crouch
Eternal is like its own unique thing now
Why the hell is there a crouch in 2016
2016 was adapting classic Doom gameplay
You use it maybe 3 times in the entire game
to be clear, I played 2016 and eternal on an xbox, 2016 about 1.8 times and Eternal just the 1 time
What is the best difficulty to play on in doom eternal?
No gotta go fast
depends on the player of course
I usually play ultra violence
Man there's like 10 difficulty settings idk
But I also have 220 hours so take that with a grain of salt
I really need to get on that Nightmare playthrough
I just wanna blast the soundtrack and feel good
Usually my approach for games is first playthrough is medium or hard, second is usually the hardest. I think eternal I did second hardest
Not permadeath that's for sure
personally, I'm the type where whenever a shooter has Easy, Normal, Hard, and WTF difficulty levels, Normal's the best for my first time around and if I really like it then Hard's worth a shot
That's a totally fair way to play the game! Doom is supposed to make you feel ridiculously powerful
Doom 4 feels like a slow and brutal heavy metal slow that picks up the pace herr and there
Eternal feels like a hardcore metal song infused with breakcore and you're on 4 different types of drugs
Also, the ONLY way to play doom is to have your music volume at 100% and sound effects at 50%
And both are perfect in my eyes
I put music at 0%
the few times I've tried Easy in a shooter, my experience was 95% "lol, that tickles" with the occasional rare "oh, huh, I actually can die"
Now I really want to play doom eternal
i actually play on mute most of the time
I should play doom now
I'm on a fallout binge right now
Just installed the tale of two wastelands mod
It's bussin
I'm still playing through Sonic Frontiers
I'M HEEEERE
I used to be mega passionate about Eternal but over time my interest and passion have fallen
I could totally do shrooms and play Doom right now but... I shouldn't when I am this sick
This recent thing with Mick Gordon is like the final nail in the coffin
That sounds terrible lmao
I'm wondering what id's next project is
Like was it worth it to lead to this point
More doom
