I wasn't good enough to beat the first boss without some help, so yeah
But I am amused watching people fight though
https://youtu.be/Jv-D7mdcFn4?t=1515 from the timestamp, the intro... and chat reactions and whatnot
The epic Elden Ring journey is drawing to a close, Connor is beating boss after boss and even discovers the Jump King section that teases him, or more of a Fall King section lmao.
This is Part 5 of Connor's Elden Ring journey. Check the full playlist here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5A3b3gHpX3islv8ClWZPajU0dqBDALQk

I thought I wouldn't be good enough to beat Artorias in DS1 but I eventually did it
bigger numbers also helped a ton...
that's the good thing, it's not like it's a requirement to head into these fights with equal numbers, you can over-prepare to make it easier, usually just bigger numbers after a shit ton of grinding
https://youtu.be/4Zm3nLrt4g4?t=18 and then the actual fighting in this vid
I still haven't even figured out how to level up yet.
Yeah the game doesn't explain shit for gearint, stats, and everything important except how to swing and shit in the tutorial
Sounds like you're still pretty early on so you might have not unlocked it
Elden ring is a really fun game
But yes that's usually one of the things that I criticize about Fromsoft games is that they usually are pretty vague especially on quests and I've harrshly criticized Fromsoft's quest design before and how bad it is but everytime I do Fromsoft fanboys jump at my throat and take turns stabbing me
I wish games like Elden Ring had a “I can’t play soulslike games” mode.
Well they usually don't have any modes
You could just cheat
I just wish they were designed better
That’s exactly the problem haha
I don't wanna sound like I hate these games though, I'm a huge fan
They’re tryhard games and I just can’t deal with them
I don't mind the no modes thing at all personally
God yes. I'd love this, but anytime I've mentioned it I just get shit on in the comments.
I think it's just a game that you're either into and can play or you're not and you can't play
I don't think a mode would help that
I’m not 15 anymore, so they’re not games that I have the ability to get the skill for
I love games without difficulty settings
I mean, plenty of games can scale your abilities vs the NPCs to make it at least easier to survive their bullshit. You still have to learn how to play, but it's not "you died" x12 in a row.
Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order is the one game I tolerated because it was an easy take on the souls formula
I still need to play that.
Then again, my game backlog is huge.
And Rimworld is calling me.
Fromsoft games do do that though, I don't know if dynamically, but they design things in specific ways to progressively be harder later on and of course easier early on
It’s a pretty cool adventure
The most important difficulty adjusting factor they make available is leveling up your stats and equipment
There's ways to make the game easier but they're not things that require a mode and just various things you can do to make it easier on yourself
I just wish there were a sliding scale, so I could dial down the "it hits you three times and you're dead" bit in the beginning.
Well when you're just starting off and you have pretty low stats it's not that uncommon really
dying often is pretty inevitable in this type of game where it's all based on trial and error and getting better each time
especially early on
Yes, Fallen Order is I think more the skill level you want, Masque. I finished that, and I get the feeling we're about the same level skill/frustration wise
I'm okay with hard fights in games like that. 10 tries, maybe 15 as my upper limit if I see gradual progress
Yeah Fallen Order would probably be more enjoyable
It's a more conventional take on the ''souls formula'', whatever that means at this point
40-50, which is probably what it would take me to beat it... bitch I don't have the lifespan left in me for that
You should definitely not try a fight 40-50 times
so far I've enjoyed every so-called Soulslike I've played that isn't by FromSoft, including Fallen Order
After three to ten times, move on and do something else
What I hate about Soulsborne games isn’t that they are difficult or challenging, it’s the fanbase when you admit to struggling and not having the skill set to beat a certain area or boss and all you get as advice is “lol noob” and “git gud”, like that’s real helpful thanks.
ixrec: any recommendations for others to try? (I've recently played Kena which isn't exactly soulslike but some fights can be brutal. Was fun enough)
Try Blasphemous
well my statement is a bit silly because I've only got two examples in total: Fallen Order and Blasphemous
It's on a 75% sale right now
but then, there also aren't that many total Soulslikes, assuming a narrow enough meaning of the term that it's still a useful term
Would Salt and Sanctuary count even if it is 2D?
I do see it on the lists google gives me but I've never played it
Yes but Salt and Sanctuary is too hard
oh derp, Hollow Knight might count
(FYI i also ragequit Hollow Knight
)

Bedtime for me. May try some more frustration Elden Ring tomorrow.
I still wanna try Tunic at some point because

2023 Q2
I don't see a demo for this, where did you find it?
nextfest only i think
But yeah at this point? I mainly play for the fun and the story. If it's challenging, that can be fun but it can't be the main focus
challenge in gaming is always a weird subject to try and articulate
there's definitely such a thing as "too easy", but man it is much easier to fall into "too hard", and lots of otherwise fun games end up there at least once or twice

It's not like I won't go after it either. Like I said, I went after the heat 32 thing in Hades, and believe me, that shit ain't easy and it took a lot of tries
I was pleasantly surprised that Fallen Order ran fine on my laptop
hilarious amounts of texture pop-in, but absolutely no playability issues
basically the ideal graceful degradation
also heads to
apparently I meet minimum but not recommended
yeah this sounds about right given how it performed for me
at least for me, the core issue with the whole "challenge" thing is that the game has to be fun the whole time you're playing it
Souls games are too hard for me I don't like them
I'd be better be having fun in the first ~10 minutes when I don't know the first thing about fighting yet, or I'm not gonna put any effort into gitting gud at your combat system
Elden Ring is probably my second favorite game
notice how Hollow Knight and Blasphemous are both Metroidvanias as well as Soulslikes; at least for me the way Metroidvanias do ability progression is excellent at gradually making the combat more complex and challenging without making me confused or bored
and Fallen Order... well honestly it might as well be a 3D Metroidvania, though I don't hear people call it that nearly as often as the others
(though I am very hyped for Nine Sols now, thanks Flitter)
fwiw, when I tried Dark Souls (1), I was having fun in the tutorial level / Asylum, which is part of the reason I kept at it for a dozen or so hours before giving up
I could not for the life of me get into Dark Souls
I really want to finish the game but its so hard
I also wanna 100% Elden Ring
Im so close but the one boss I need to beat keeps kicking my ass
I need 4 more achievements to get the platinum
I think
I don't even know what 'soulslike' even means at this point
heh
how do you even quantify that is just beyond me
that's why I don't bother with 'soulslikes' anymore I just would rather think of the games as their own thing because even fallen order is only a soulslike in a very superficial way
I'd sooner think of blasphemous as a metroidvania than a souls game but I haven't played that one
I think if a person is having trouble with a souls game a guide can 100% make it easier and probably more enjoyable
No shame in it, hell, I personally recommend anyone use a guide because a lot of things are just straight up bullshit and it's good to have some prior knowledge of some things like certain mechanics and all that
Hollow Knight and Blasphemous I see as having a very Soulslike narrative, in that they're both fairly bleak worlds, the story is mostly left for you to discover and infer rather than told directly, and it's unclear whether your actions are really accomplishing anything
I wonder what people who are 'bad' at Souls games would think of Sekiro which is a way more conventional type of game by Fromsoft
Fallen Order I'd say is Soulslike only in the sense that it has slow-ish, deliberate combat revolving around a melee weapon with parry/dodge mechanics, and enemies stronger than you such that you really need to get the dodges and parries right to win, and choose your attacks carefully
I pretty much only finished Elden Ring because of guides
interesting, I probably wouldn't count it as a soulslike just because I think that term is so superficial at this point but I won't deny that it definitely borrows some elements
especially the bonfire mechanic
I would also agree with that and mostly don't use the term myself when describing these things
no shame at all, I despise the part of the fromsoft fandom that is like ''if you didn't complete the game 100% finding everything on your own YOU DIDN'T ACTUALLY BEAT THE GAME!!!11111''
but at least for those three games, I see why people keep saying it; they are referring to something real and substantial
Yeah
This is an especially apparent problem when it comes to questlines and the story
All that matters is that I had fun
People loooove to pretend that the storytelling and the stories of these games are beautiful but the moment they finish the game they wait patiently for VaatiVidya to dump all his interpretation of the lore unto them
or go into forums and threads to read what people are saying the story is
incidentally, I do think Hollow Knight is hands down the best example of this kind of storytelling I've played, because you actually do get a complete and satisfying story out of it if you've been paying attention and exploring enough to put all the clues together
granted, I'm much less familiar with the details of the Dark Souls plot since I couldn't even get through those games, but I do think HK beats Blasphemous in this regard
Who knows, maybe I just need to find a soulslike game I like. I thought I didn't like Metroidvanias but now Metroid Dread is one of my favourite games ever
(and of course Fallen Order has a more traditional narrative so it's not relevant here)
I do think they did the Elden Ring story well
You just have to piece together the story yourself
IMO that narrative style is the best thing to come out of the whole "Soulslike" craze
Yeah
(in part because things like "combat where dodging/parrying are crucial" was already commonplace
)
That's exactly what I mean though
There's that section of people that are so smug about knowing the entire story and praise the storytelling so much yet they never really piece it together they just watch lore videos and stuff
I appreciate the unique minimalist approach to storytelling, it isn't done much if at all in many games
You get big setpieces and lore dumps for the big moments, mostly the intro and end
the rest is all just hey this is the world, we're not gonna explain much but you can figure out what's going on if you run around and die a few times
off you go [pats you on the back]
and part of the reason I like that minimalist narrative style is that it's one uniquely well suited to an interactive medium like video games: you only get all the clues if you do all the things that reveal more clues
A lot of people, mostly the people who hate on the souls games for being too hard or confusing etc, also hate on the way the story is told because they say they don't get it and it's dumb and they wish it had a normal story, I feel like a conventional way of telling a story would severely worsen the experience of a souls game
the multiple endings in Hollow Knight and Blasphemous being pretty clear cases; there are entire subplots, characters and backstories you simply never hear about if you don't do any of the "true" ending requirements
at the same time I also believe it's super easy for a person to just turn their brains off and not realize what's happening
that's what happened to me with ds2
to this day, I still have no clue what that game is about
Mario
is not a Soulslike
Are you sure
yup
Is Doom a soulslike
not in any of the ways I've seen that term used so far
No
Is Minecraft a soulslike
No
Is elder ring souls like /s
I think all we've established is that you're not currently fixated on a soulslike
not that I think trying one should be a huge priority or anything
I've tried Hollow Knight and Dark Souls 1
you've still got a few dozen Metroidvanias that are likely safer bets, for starters
I wanna play Zero Mission and Fusion sometime
ok, if HK didn't do it for you then that's a pretty solid result
I'd say Elden Ring would be the best souls game to start with
What do you mean
you suggested that you just don't like Soulslikes
I hadn't realized you'd tried HK when I first responded to that

yes
Wow she voiced Ice Queen
She did voices for Doom 3, Cap.
Oh cool
I find it funny how sometimes when a character is foreign and also speaks english they always make sure to have that character say like one or two words in their native language everytime they speak

we don't.... we don't do that...
it's like the writer is telling you ''HEY! don't forget, she's foreign!
get it? she says mi viejo instead of my dad!''
it's almost always told by a VA that clearly doesn't speak the native language too so it's extra funny
I caught that Tara Strong and Grey DeLisle pronounce Costa Rica with a very american accent, very light R sound, in spanish it's more like Costa Rrica
also true of someone having, say, a southern accent. Like, they'll work in a "y'all" or "bless your heart" every conversation regardless of how weird they have to make the dialogue in order to do it.
yooooo she did the voice for Yumi in hai hai puffy ami yumi
Sometimes I forget just how many rules VAs can do
Wow this HD mod for the PSP version really makes things look super crisp
If only I had a 60 fps mod
Seriously PW runs at 20 fps how did I EVER play this game before as a kid?
Remember kids
It worked! https://i.imgur.com/pK37OWl.png
I unified Japan, then slowly worked on dismantling Ming until I was able to sweep the rug from under them
Now I'm Japan and China
All I need to do next is actually unify China
Helped to cause the Mingxplosion. Congrats. Remember to accept the local culture for tax and manpower boosts.
Yeah, I think I'm gonna end this game right here and start a new one later
The only thing I wouldn't have done is claim the Mandate until you at least had the three cities that give the most points for it. Otherwise, it's a rolling snowball of bad things.
Still, GG on that. I haven't fully done that yet in my attempts, but both had a Ming that didn't explode and one bad series of fights.
Yeah I had to try out the new CB and figure out what it does
Turns out, it makes you China! But you still need to hold Beijing, Canton and Nanjing
You don't have to, but it helps a lot, which also makes it easier to fight against them on the flip side.
Well else it implodes
I was quickly losing mandate with no easy way to recover it
Shame the achievement requires you not to just steal the mandate of heaven, but to actually unify China to get it
I think you can do it next run with the info you have now.
Well I'm gonna do something else
Good luck and have fun.

i played this with friends when it was free on epic, its really fun in a party, i didn't find soloing it to be as fun though
we completed it once then kept trying to complete it on hardcore more because why not, but we kept getting like 3/4 of the way through the game, getting greedy and trying to do a skip then dying
my only reall problems with it are that since its partially roguelike it can be annoying to plan builds since you may not get what you want to drop + if you play in a 4 stack you really feel if a player isn't pulling their weight

Probably lack of knowledge of the charity, and probably she just wants to be in good terms now from her fuck up.
Unfortunately, Twitter users are vultures.
It unfortunately seems that's not the case
@LifeOnthaCouch @jasonschreier She just had old tweets resurface where she's supporting Blue Lives Matter and other conservative ideologies so I'm afraid this charity's actions are very in-line with her own beliefs.

there is one (there's also a 30 FPS mod), but you need to disable it in certain parts of the game
the PS3 port of Peace Walker (part of HD Collection) also runs at 60 FPS, but you need a beefy PC to emulate it
it seems that in general, if your PC can do it (or you have a PS3 around), the HD Collection is a good bet for MGS2 and 3
as a Reddit comment says:
PS3 has better quality, but PS2 has skateboarding and Ape Escape. Tough call
yeah but alas no ps3 or controller to comfortably play...
I could try but I don't think my pc can handle a ps3 emulator
or maybe play both at the same time
https://www.reddit.com/r/rpcs3/comments/gg2zon/did_i_just_run_both_mgs3_on_ps2_and_ps3_emulator/
yeah, these games are pretty demanding in emulators, especially MGS3
not MGS4 level (which gives 2022's top-end CPUs a workout) but it gets close
oh my god my pc would kill me if I put her through that
I tried playing it on ps2 and it ran so slow
I tried emulating MGS2 as well and it also ran slow
PC port runs fine though
I have it on GOG
PC port seems to be fine with V's patch from what I read
https://www.gog.com/forum/metal_gear_series/mgs2_vs_fixpcsx2rpcs3_graphics_comparison_tanker_section

you're not missing out too much by using a patched PC version instead of PS3, the differences are subtle to be fair
yeah for MGS2 I'll stick with PC it runs well enough, I'm just bad at it
I didn't install any patch though
PC version can also use a third-person camera mod since recently
it does make the game easier though, as expected
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Metal Gear Solid 2, I did what this game always deserved. Soon you will be able to play the game like never before and see it from a whole new angle!

btw dunno if anyone was talking about this but BAYONETTA 3 BABY!
I've been watching a streamer I like play it and it's so awesome so far
dance dance dance
well, good thing I figured out how to buy games through my Switch's e-shop
not sure if I'm in the mood for it this weekend
game is said to have technical issues, wait for patches probably
Next, figure out how to pirate games on the Switch
I actually seem to have the first two bayonetta games in my library but never played them... should get around to that
My sister uses Tinfoil to pirate a ton of really bad Japanese VNs
(hm, maybe just the first it seems)
Her favorite is an among us themed one
why does your sister play bad VNs
She's a Japanophile
playing bad games is also fun
If it's fun it's not bad
I'll probably sooner play Bayo 3 through an upcoming Switch emulator before I actually pay for a switch and buy the game
If only it released on PC too
Sorry Platinum but your game is stuck in the switch jail
Bayonetta 3 is topping the sales charts on the eshop
As it should!!!
Internet works as always
"Oh no VA pay small boycott game" quickly to "We buy this game to support people and fuck you Hellena"

Isn't Bayo Bi
so I've played Bayonetta 1 and 2
AFAIK the games never address it, and she never displays clear romantic or sexual interest in another character. She never stops putting on a show for the camera, which I suppose is sexualizing herself (so much to unpack there), but that's as far as I ever saw it go.
However, most of the plot of Bayonetta 2 is about her literally breaking into Hell in order to bring back the soul of her best friend who is also a woman.
Every game I've played has had LGBTQ+ in it, this is by design
so, you know, there's shipfuel there
hmmmmmmmmm
I'm not sure about LGBTQ+ in Mario
Rosalina is a lesbian what are you talking about
god i totally forgot about the Helena thing and was wondering why people would be happy with Bayo 3 selling well
also they just kinda look awesome together:
https://i.pinimg.com/originals/33/7c/10/337c103a111981bd5b085feaff54feff.jpg
(I know this is fanart but I don't have a pile of relevant ship-screencaps handy and my Switch is in a drawer somewhere and I suck at the game anyway so there)
I also accept ace Rosalina
I'm not biased
i only accept rosalina x luma
I think you're more like "I make LGBTQ+ headcanon to games I played because I like it"
Except some of those with actual canon
lol sure
Doomguy is canonically ace
And Samus is lesbian because all giant women are lesbians (this is true Tale told me)
I'm almost more excited to hear Tale's reactions to Bayonetta 3 than to play it myself
It's noncanon in my heart
the baby
you can remove the m from mother but you can't remove samus' trauma
I know a new Metroid came out literally last year but I need more
welcome to being a Metroid fan
I WANT A NEW F-ZERO
but also you've got like 5 more existing Metroid games to play lol
Canonicity is a matter of consensus

There's no consensus on Other M, therefore it's not canon
I imagined a funny moment when they create a GOTY level Metroid game but the last line of Samus is "I miss Adam"
I don't know how to emulate on my puter
I wanna play Zero Mission and Fusion so bad
And people fight if the story should be canon or not
does that include AM2R or has Nintendo C&D'd that into irrelevance?
as in, how to download VisualBoyAdvance and a ZM or Fusion rom?
you google the things and download them and drag one onto the other
Hmmmmmm
it's exactly as easy as it sounds, I'm not hiding some secret programmer arcana
behold my incredibly high-tech Fire Emblem emulation setup:
there's a bit more if you want to use a controller but really that's just remapping the GBA controls
Do you think Din Djarin and Metroid Samus would be friends
They both are bounty hunters from warrior races who protect a little green alien like it was their child
Single father and single mother
probably, they're both bounty hunters from mostly extinct cultures with enough of an altruistic streak to save creatures they don't need to save just to earn their paychecks
Yes
I can't wait to see more single dad season 3
Why does the visualboyadvance website look like this
because it doesn't care what we think the website looks like
it's to keep the nintencops away
That site hasn’t been updated since like 2007.
VBA is also a deprecated emulator these days
oh, is there a better one I'm supposed to be using?
The one that’s actively developed would be mGBA
https://www.twitch.tv/tchernobogg back to FF7 remake. Cloud looks lovely in a dress.
gtk
I just use whatever is put on retroarch lol
Where do I get roms
i use cdromance, personally
I don't want to download a virus
"various sites"
My sources are invite only and I haven’t really looked around in public sites in ages
Aghhh
https://vimm.net/vault/GBA is the last site where I personally managed to find what I was looking for, but I've never done any kind of serious audit on all the rom hosting sites out there these days
https://cdromance.com/ for ds, gba n gbc stuff
that's probably enough options lol
it gets trickier if u want things lile psp but, with enough determination n googlin, ya know
You guys aren't going to get shot by copyright police for sharing these are you
Nah.
Nah
bold of the police to assume they can catch me

IIRC it's technically legal to download roms for games you already own
Yep.
but also, no one cares lol
Well more specifically that legal precedent is messy and nobody really cares to settle it.
noone cares about stuff like this mario
itd b different if you own the site, but usin it?
^
aint noone got time for that nonsense
Okey so now that I have the GBA emulator and the rom what do I do now
Nintendo has tried
Open the emulator, then load the ROM
they've tried....
You may want to extract the ROM from the zip file if needed
(personally i prefer ds and gba/c on phone for convenience but, what floats ye boat)
there's SkyEmu as an up-and-coming alternative to mGBA (not to be confused with Skyline)
Yes I did this
It's a black screen
Just that button
I downloaded the one Ix told me to
this settles the Vim vs Emacs debate
Windows (64-bit, installer .exe)
actually, no, it's not, not even in the EU
this doesn't count as a private backup copy
huh, okay then
Just grab the installer 64 bit
Unless you have 7zip, which is more handy
It's telling me that my computer is at risk if I run it
which site are you on? double-check you're not downloading the emulator from a shady source
Yeah because it's not signed with a cert that Microsoft recommends, you can ignore that warning
(why, in 2022, is there ever a website that doesn't just give you a big "I don't care install the thing" button for the people who don't care about 32 vs 64 bit
)
Just be sure you download it from here and it's fine
Yes that's where I am
It's safe
Microsoft flags a lot of emulators this way these days
as for why you're getting a warning, mGBA's Windows release isn't code signed as it costs a significant amount of money to do so
For some reason they don't have hashes so I can't check
Because they now require an expensive app signing thing
(to make things worse, the kind of codesigning that always works (EV) got much more expensive since 2020)
Yay

Thankies everypone for putting up with my incompetence

at this point, I'd say best way to deal with this is to have a WebAssembly port for your app… also helps for iOS without sideloading
of course now you must learn the buttons, or remap them to whatever you find comfortable
ok, that's a pretty big win over VBA, you've got me there
mGBA is a damn good emulator
You're not seeing Metroid. You're seeing the gap between games and it is a void.
It also emulates nearly all special hardware natively
How do I see controls Midnight
Thank
so did you get ZM or Fusion?
It even supports the e-reader data if you can find it
ZM

Neither Bayonetta 1 nor 2 ever really make it clear whether Bayonetta and Jeanne are in a relationship though it's a very popular pairing especially when you combine the fact that in the artbook of Bayonetta 1 they have some sketches of Bayo and Jeanne living together because the people working on it thought it'd make for a lot of funny interactions, can't post the art here because Jeanne is in her underwear but there's this one artwork of Bayo ripping the sheets off of Jeanne who is apparently hungover
I don't really like the pairing because I see Bayo and Jeanne as sisters more than lovers, and the new game seems to agree with me on SPOILERS || Bayonetta and Luka being a thing since Viola SEEMS to be their future daughter from another dimension ||
But you know how it is, that's the most popular pairing so people kind of default to Bayo and Jeanne being a thing anyways
I've been revisiting MGS lately though and that's full of gay pairings, hell people ship Big Boss with Ocelot and Kaz and he was canonically attracted and even had the seggs with EVA

the one canon LGBT character in MGS is Strangelove who is explicitly gay for The Boss
Do you think Ocelot and Big Boss ever explored each others bodies
I know Big Boss and Kaz have explored each others bodies
This is the 10th track of the japanese CD "Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker - Heiwa to Wahei no Blues"
Previously mentioned in the 8th entry of Paz secret tapes in Peace Walker, this drama shows Snake and Kaz having a good time at Mother Base Sauna. With the voices of Akio Ohtsuka and Tomokazu Sugita.
The audio drama was only released in Japan a...
this is real, and it's official, and it's canon
HOW IS KOJIMA CONFUSED ABOUT PEOPLE THINKING HIS GAMES ARE GAY
This is a totally heterosexual interaction that men normally do in a sauna
shut up it's not gay
shut up

the funny part is how, during the conversation, Kaz and Snake explicitly reference Kaz courting and getting it with a female MSF member, and EVEN THEN, you still think ''oh this guy is TOTALLY gay''
so at least they're all bisexual
Haha
I think the only one who is explicitly heterosexual in the entire franchise are Raiden and Meryl lul
I say explicitly because they never had any of these sus interactions, because technically they're all straight without counting Strangelove
but you know, Kojima
I need to play the Metal Gear games
There's a lot of em
He's a fascinating creature
He truly is
Although remember these are a team effort so Kojumbo is not the only mastermind behind these games
have you seen the raiden clips in the mgs3 secret theater lol
@gaunt marten you're the master of gaming knowledge, are there any good WWI strategy games you are aware of?
Does Heart of Iron count?
that's WWII right?
Yup, a while ago
Yes
Hearts of Iron 4 specifically
i'm thinking about something limited by the technology of the time
Really? Huh.
I always thought that Kojima greenlit, funded, wrote, programmed, packaged, released, shipped, purchased, and played all these games exclusively by himself.
Lol
context: i've been watching The Great War series on youtube and learning about WWI in particular
and i find the particular confluence of technology and politics of the time very fascinating
and i was wondering if there were any games about that period in particular that aren't FPSs
Honestly with all the credit he gives himself all the time with the whole "a game by Hideo Kojima" I wouldn't blame you if you legitimately thought that
Gimme a bit. I'm taking a walk
thanks
Kojumbo is the same as george lucas in a way
great interesting ideas but needs a good writer to kind of keep those ideas in check and shape them into something... good
So what you want is a historically accurate WW1 strategy game. Either real time or turn based
more or less
Yes but also it's funny to just kind of let him off the leash and see what he does
Hearts of Iron is right up that alley from my impression, but there's a few more
i would imagine there would be a strong political element, because the actual war strategy is defense defense defense and also let's spend 100,000 soldiers in one battle and still lose
Apparently Victoria 2 also has a World War 1 element
Probably not something good
honestly
oh it's paradox, big surprise
to be fair Kojima has had cowriters since forever and some of the best games were co-written by Tomokazu Fukushima
Funny story this is a writer who kind of disappeared after MGS3 I think it was? and to my knowledge hasn't resurfaced so a lot of people legitimately think he got killed by the yakuza
O h
Also try World War 1 by Dark Fox, Commander: The Great War, Commands and Colors the Great War, Sid Meier's Ace Patrol
And don't forget that Steam allows you to explore by tags so you can look for games in the world war 1 tag and the strategy tag
yeah he left during the development of MGS4 and a lot of people didn't really find any trace of the guy so that's the seed of the theory, but I don't know the details of the yakuza theory, might need to look into it a bit further
but it seems he did have some minor roles on smaller games afterwards
so maybe it's all bullshit
that's just a theory!
a metal gear theory
thanks, i'll look into them!
wtf steam
One thing to note
The tags are automatically generated when people tag games so there's a lot of joke ones
But some moderation happens to prevent the worst of it
World War 1 is too grim for me to enjoy games that focus too much on it
it is pretty grim

Princess Toadstool has been captured by Bowser. Embark on an all new journey through the Mushroom Kingdom to save her from his evil clutches.
I have not seen it before
I love the framing of this scene, making Snake look all sinister like that especially when recruiting Chico
For context, Chico is a child soldier/revolucionary in Costa Rica and he just sold out all his buddies' positions after being tortured by CIA and he's understandably pretty shaken up about it, Snake just so happens to have begun his new military organization and Chico looks prime and ready to get indoctrinated recruited into his military group
it's a really cool way to show off Snake's charisma and leadership while also pretty much telling you hey, this guy is starting to be pretty evil/heavily misguided
just starting though
He's still relatively nice here, it's why I love Peace Walker so much, Snake didn't really start to become pretty questionable until MGSV
by the way @visual hill I actually looked up that cheat code for 60 fps for PSP Peace Walker and it's working pretty alright

holy shit lmao
Oh my god Valve please give us another game
another half life please
nope
that's just a thing for dota2

Whoa, there. You know the rule. One Half-Life game every 13 years.
In about 5 years we'll see about starting the hype train for Half-Life Alyx: Episode One
Or Half-Life 2: Episode Two: Episode One.
We'll see which path Valve takes.
Episode two: Episode one

It's gonna happen I'm sure of it, one day there will be that announcement of Half Life: Episode Three: Chapter One
even if it's for VR, it's fine
people didn't think much of Alyx before it released, thinking it was just some stupid venture into VR and a waste of the IP
and lo and behold it's one of the best VR games ever, and a damn good half life game as well
the VR breathed so much life into that world
Most of the games they've released, at least for HL, have been to show how the entire format or industry can be changed, or something with a big impact
FPS didn't have too much of a story before HL1, they showed that you can knock it out of the fucking park. HL2 had quite large impact with the physics and i think lip movement and so on
Every single game Valve released has managed to make a mark and leave an impact on the gaming industry as a whole
HL3 if anything would be if they can get it to VR for everyman or something
even TF2 which still remains active to this day with a beloved community
even if HL3 doesn't push any boundaries or anything I'm sure we'd all still want it
or hell I'll take portal 3
fuck it, new IP, just give me something Valve
I haven't been able to play alyx since i don't have any VR headset and I don't wanna watch it through youtube
I've somehow managed to avoid Alyx spoilers for two years, so I might as well keep it going

Eld the ringing
Ponies go pew pew & stabby stab in indie RTS game mod
Anyone ever play the old RTS "Z"? With rather rude robots
I have loose memories of a game named Z
This one game I'm playing resembles a mixture of Old-school Total Annihilation combines with Supreme Commander, but able to play in most low end computers, up to 10 max players, cross-platform between Steam and Mobile users, and a highly extensive modding platform that is easy to learn and able to make changes while in-game when modding
Z is a real time strategy game made by The Bitmap Brothers and published by Virgin Interactive (among others). It was released on PC 1996.
There also was a release on Playstation in 1997 and on Saturn in 1998. An iOS port was came out in 2011.
I would say that Z is not your ordinary RTS game but that's probably what made it attractive because...
It looks like a Lovely game

My biggest wish (besides having RD become real or getting a lifesize Rainbow Dash plush) would be to have a gigantic Rainbow Factory video game with two story modes, Hero and Dark like in Sonic Adventure 2. Hero would be focused on Scootaloo like the actual fanfic, while Dark would be focused on Rainbow Factory Dash herself. Maybe there would even be more extra gamemodes, a sandbox mode or something like that, a hardcore difficulty game mode for both stories, and if it was possible for the game, a multiplayer game mode a bit like SCP Secret Lab with 2 major factions; The Resistance which consists of failures you play as trying to escape the factory, and Factory which consists of the workers and etc. On The Resistance, only 3 specific random people will be chosen to be Scootaloo, Orion, and Aurora Dawn. Same for the Factory faction, which 3 specific random people will be chosen to be Rainbow Factory Dash, Dr. Atmosphere, and Glaze.
Going to Duna in KSP :
8 mega boosters for the takeoff,
8 reactors to get into orbit,
16 ion engines to get on the correct trajectory to Duna,
8 monopropellant engines to land safely,
2 more boosters to take off from Duna,
1 engine to get into Duna's orbit,
and 5 more ion engines to go back to Kerbin.

nvm this, I had to add even more boosters
oh no, the rocket is wobbly
needs more struts

you taunted the kraken and suffered for your hubris
wait, I haven't even pressed spacebar
with the offering I made him thursday, I thought he would be happy
Ok, so... I tried it again, one of the boosters exploded, and while the rocket should be completely unbalanced, its trajectory is still vertical
I think it's because of the 8 large reaction wheels :P
oh, it balanced itself, the booster on the other side just flew away
aw sweet, i got a halloween item worth 9 keys... untradable, but sure
I am now at 4/8 boosters

Oh wow this section in RE8 DLC is actually pretty fucking scary
for context: ||you gotta look at it or else it will start chasing after you, and you can actually see it moving it's not like it's teleporting everytime you don't look, and its movements are fucking crazy scary
||
what if spider get in helicopter

Use a jetpack or sth
Would not recommend; tried this and the spider apparently had a jetpack as well
yeah but at least if you use a pistol you can shoot the jetpack
I'm very sad that SH2R probably won't bring back the fixed camera, the fixed camera is such a staple of survival horror games and SH would greatly benefit from a fixed camera unlike Resi which is a bit more action oriented
that being said replaying through RE1 HD this is fantastic
the version I'm playing is the re-released remaster of the remake from like 2015 but I really wish that they did something similar for RE2R
I'm pretty sad that a lot of people consider fixed cameras and tank controls for that matter to be outdated janky systems
The screen and reveal when you enter this room might be my favorite in the whole game
Yeah it's super good, it's like right above you it's amazing
and that's why I love fixed camera angles, that kind of stuff just disappears ocmpletely without it
they add so much to these games it's amazing
LIKE THIS
Classic RE2 is my favorite but RE1 Remake is probably the best of the fixed camera games
also just wanna show off this Jill skin because she looks beautiful
If RE1 had the same camera system as games like Dino Crisis or Silent Hill where the camera is fixed but is also dynamic where it moves and follows the player it would legitimately be the ultimate, most perfect, bestest survival horror game ever made
at least that's what I think
I still think it's one of the best RE games ever made
oh you can see her better here
Jill...
Gotta dig for the CRT pictures from my recent playthrough
I love how much this game looks like RE4, which makes sense since both are gamecube originals
but the good part is, both STILL hold up today
Like, visually, they look great
Like a weeping angel from Doctor Who or a Boo from Mario?
Uuuuugh it’s freaky
Precisely, except you can actually see them move around the corner and stop when they notice you're looking

Yeeeah it's awesome
This game is so pretty
this reshade mod makes it look even more awesome
I might install it for a second playthrough
I plan on going through it again when I unlock Jills other costumes
ah did it!!
all by myself
it looks way more complicated than it actually is
...now what do I do with the other bottles
I think there's a point where you're prompted to toss them away
I'm pretty close to the safe room so I'll just dump em in there
oh boy, these bathrooms
they've definitely seen better days...

does anyone have any experience with terraria mobile? im trying to get a server set up but it doesnt seem to be working, and as far as i can tell i did everything right
i figured it out
i think
it worked when trying to connect via local, i knew the server was working, but when i tried testing it via online and ip connecting, it would just time out
took me a while to try connecting via mobile data rather than my wifi, but it worked then
Try tailscale
It lets you to connect to any computer through the Internet as if it was local, Hamachi-style
no no, its fine now
sure but i just needed to know if i got things setup properly and if it functioned, which i have now confirmed
the next step is co-ordinating time to play with lia

those 1-8 user posts had fairly little overlap that I saw

ah yes, Masque did ping the role inside that thread: <#1032717462753517681 message>

IIUC pinging someone from a thread implicitly causes them to join/follow it, so that particular number we'll have to call an outlier

que?
Guaranteeing a country is like a one-sided alliance
Meaning they will come to your aid if anyone declares war on you
But you don't have to do the same
The benefit is you become pals and you protect smaller nations from being gobbled up by your rivals
But England is my rivals
damn you beat them so hard they swore loyality to you?
Technically my ally Castile did 70% of the work
I just fought Brittany (now extinct) and England was their ally, I occupied Brittany and one English province, fighting off smaller armies
Given how they labeled the event, that is intentional.
In this case, it'll just keep France from jumping on you and possibly open England to more diplomatic plays in the future.
My problem is that France ate all the Brittany provinces I intended to conquer so now my only avenue to expand other than colonization is to fight off England or France
I already have an alliance stronger than France. If only all of them were willing to fight it at the same time
Work on favors. You just need 10 to call folks in, as long as other things don't keep them out as well.
Yes. Favors are pretty difficult to curry when you're a tiny nation. I like to keep 20 or 30. 10 to declare war, 10 to ask allies to prepare for war just in case, and 10 to ask for money
Fair. Higher diplo status and certain ministers will help too.
wowza
My 6700k doesn't meet the minimum requirements for new games anymore?
heh, I think it'll work out OK but consider doing a small overclock on it
mine has been running at 4.4 GHz (same speed as the 7700K) for years now
I also use a tool to force high CPU/GPU power states while games are running to reduce stutter incurred by incidental downclocking
it's interesting to see 12 GB of RAM is a hard requirement, but I wonder if they just put this in case people are trying to keep Chrome open at the same time on a 8 GB machine
a 8 GB VRAM requirement is also pretty heavy, this excludes a ton of cards prior to Ampere. Press F to pay respects to RX 6500XT owners
I got no clue about these things
12gb of ram is pretty much the default now days for AAA games
people are saying that since it's a ps5 game it's fine and that it makes sense that new games will be more demanding but I don't really like their arguments because they have that attitude of ''oh get with the times and just buy all these expensive parts like what are you complaining about''
yeah, it doesn't work like that in countries with import fees
I'm sorry that I'm latin american and everything costs me a liver and is thrice as hard to find 🗿
and, as far as I can tell, Uruguay isn't even the worst in that situation 😛 Argentina has it far worse, or even Brazil
most tech stuff in brazil
you can buy a flight to US, book a hotel, buy what you want, maybe even twice, go back
and probably still have some money left, comparing to the price in brazil
and I am not kidding
Thankfully
for me at least
Considering I don't have a working GPU overclocking won't do me much good

I know someone from Argentina who moved to Spain and he was shocked by how cheap hardware was in comparison
(and that's EU, not the US where it's even cheaper)
On the other hand Argentina has decently cheap software
an iphone for example, $999 in US
Oh my god people are saying the minimum requirements for SH2R are 'low specs'
in brazil, converting to dollar, is $1836
My brother has an Argentina steam account and games are 30% the price despite Saudi Arabia already getting a big discount
my current PC (built in 2016 with top-end components at the time) barely meets minimum specs
for a remake game, I consider this very steep
a 3080 in brazil converting to dollar is around $1500+
yeah I don't know much about PCs and stuff but these don't seem normal to me, I know this is a PS5 game but still
it is just insane
what are Spiderman Remastered's specs compared to this? that's a PS5 title too
and it looks amazing
they were definitely less high, but Spider-Man Remastered is a very CPU demanding game
my i7-6700K clearly causes sustained drops below 60 FPS in open world on a regular basis
at release, the only CPU that can sustain 60 FPS at maxed settings is a i9-12900K (and now the i9-13900K)
the game wasn't unplayable by any means on my PC, but I had to stick to low settings which felt a bit insulting to do on a GTX 1080
it does look nice on low settings as long as you keep textures maxed out
A lot of the people are saying that 1080s and stuff like that are from like 5 years ago or something and that it's already 'old' and 'outdated'
me, with a gt 1030
I still can't decide how much longer I want to wait before replacing my phone and/or laptop
odds are I'll just keep putting it off until some indie puzzle platformer goes "wtf, a gtx 1050? lol nope"
for laptops, wait before next-gen CPUs/GPUs become available
the power efficiency gains from the next generation should pay off a lot in laptops, current-gen laptops have a tendency to throttle too much and be too noisy at load in general
can't disagree there
so the 4000-series I thought was new doesn't count as "next gen"?
it does, it's not available in laptops yet
what I consider next-gen for laptops is Zen 4, Raptor Lake (CPUs), Ada Lovelace and RDNA3 (GPUs)
they're out on desktops (except for RDNA3, that's in a few weeks) but not in laptops yet – it usually happens a few months later
CES 2023 might have some announcements here, but it can also be done during spring/summer
I'm kinda looking for a good work laptop
foldable laptops look super interesting (you know how I feel about foldables :P), but I hate how none of them exist in 32 GB RAM options
and I don't need a laptop these days anymore, anyway
My brother has a high end Thinkpad with Kali Linux that he got from his cybersecurity work
And that thing has a sexy high DPI screen
I'm totally in love with it
hiDPI is love, hiDPI is life
it's a shame high refresh rate 5K/6K monitors will probably never be a thing
I'm not sure if I've ever used any non-default DPIs
I have a 4K laptop (which I use at 200% scaling) and text looks fantastic on it
That being said I don't have the budget for an ultrabook
There's no default DPI!
It's dependent on screen size and the number of pixels, so there's a lot of different combinations
well, the point is I have no idea what I'm using
by default DPI, I think Ixrec means 100% scaling
you can check Windows' display options for your scaling setting – some displays have their default set to higher values than 100%
My monitor has 92ish DPI
92dpi is indeed pretty close to the reference "low DPI" value for desktop monitors, such as 24" 1080p and 32" 1440p
I'm considering getting a LG C2 42" around Black Friday, we'll see if I can materialize this plan
phones are viewed from a closer distance, so they need higher DPI to look good
if you want a metric that takes viewing distance into account, look into PPD (pixels per degree)
I put my phone on the other side of the room to view it. You're not my mom
In a topic separate to PC parts, how about some Undertale
https://youtu.be/l3sJ79C1Zyo
Undertale is a great game and I really do highly recommend it, you can get a copy at http://store.steampowered.com/app/391540/
Get the Soundtrack on Steam or at http://tobyfox.bandcamp.com/
I find it insane to see so many people say that stuff like FNAF and Undertale made their childhoods talking about them as if they were like, 90s anime or cartoons and stuff
And to be fair those things did release like, 8 years ago..?
geez....
Lots of kids
Wait, that can't be right, can it?
...not quite but I still refuse to believe this
FNAF is 8 years, Undertale is 7 years
I was 12 and 13 respectively
I'm only 20
damn
Captain is actually ~562 years old, she's just early on in this particular reincarnation cycle
That explains a few things.
What the fuck does that mean Lunar
Precious Cinnamon Roll.
Speaking of cards... my 5600x cpu and 3070 gpu can play games fine, even stream. But i've been playing ff7 remake and streaming a lot of it... mostly good so far. But lately it's been chugging, not sure why. (probably having to do with running the game at max details and 1440p, streaming, vtubing and having a bunch of chrome tabs open at the same time... 95% gpu usage
)
I think you answered your question yourself there already
This is so many numbers
