Hi @lofty swallow. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base.

OpenAI does have a motion video generation model family called Sora 2 (including sora-2 and sora-2-pro) that generates videos with synced audio from text or images. These models are available through the Videos API (v1/videos) and also accessible via standard endpoints like Chat Completions and Responses when you specify a Sora model. [Sora 2; Sora 2 Pro]

However, there are two important caveats from the docs:

  1. Sora 2 and the Videos API are deprecated and are scheduled to shut down on September 24, 2026. This affects:

    • Videos API
    • sora-2, sora-2-pro
    • sora-2-2025-10-06, sora-2-2025-12-08, sora-2-pro-2025-10-06 [Deprecations; Video guide]
  2. The documentation does not state what will replace Sora 2 or when a next-generation video model will be released, so there is no official timeline in these sources for a future model that would “match up” with any specific competitor like Claude Opus 5.5. The knowledge sources simply do not say.

So, based on the provided information:

  • Yes, there is currently a motion video generation capability (Sora 2 / Sora 2 Pro via the Videos API).
  • These are already marked as legacy and deprecated, with a fixed shutdown date.
  • There is no documented announcement here about a successor model or timing beyond that.

Note: you can ask me a follow up question by @ mentioning me again :speech_balloon:
