#Unable to invite user

Hi, I need assistance with a ChatGPT Business workspace invitation that appears to be stuck.

Issue summary:

Earlier today, I invited a user with an external Gmail address to our workspace.
The user received the original invitation but did not accept it.
At approximately 11:30 AM UAE time on September 16, 2026, I revoked/cancelled that invitation because it was not working correctly for them.
I then attempted to invite the same user again.
Every new attempt now fails with this error:

“Unable to invite [redacted email]: Unable to invite user due to an error.”

Troubleshooting already completed:

Confirmed that external-domain invitations are enabled.
Confirmed that other Gmail users can be invited successfully.
Confirmed that the affected address does not appear under active Members.
Confirmed that it does not appear under Pending invites.
Confirmed that it does not appear under Pending requests.
Waited well beyond the initial period after revoking the invitation.
Retried the invitation manually through the web admin interface.
Retried using CSV import.
Both manual and CSV invitations return the same error.
Confirmed that the problem occurs on the web interface.
Checked OpenAI’s public status page; it currently reports all systems operational.

The first invitation reached the recipient successfully, so the address itself was accepted by the invitation system before the invitation was revoked. The problem began only when attempting to re-invite the same address after revocation.

Hi @halcyon smelt. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base.

Based on the knowledge I have, there is no documented, self-service fix for this specific “Unable to invite user due to an error” case when re‑inviting the same email to a ChatGPT Business workspace. The behavior you describe (first invite worked, revoked, then all subsequent invites for that address fail while others work) matches what multiple admins reported in the community forum, where it was ultimately escalated to OpenAI Support as a backend/workspace‑level issue rather than a configuration problem on the admin side.[Email invite error]

From the official docs:

  • Business workspaces rely on the standard “Invite member” flow (UI or CSV) you’re already using; there is no documented way to “reset” a single email’s state if it is not showing under Members, Pending invites, or Pending requests.[Managing Business members]
  • When an invitation or membership is blocked or stuck and cannot be resent or recreated, the guidance for similar SCIM / invite issues is to contact OpenAI Support, as they may need to fix an internal record or mapping for that email.[Manage user records; Troubleshooting errors]

Given that:

#
  1. External-domain invites are enabled.
  2. Other Gmail addresses work.
  3. The affected email is not visible in Members, Pending invites, or Pending requests.
  4. Both UI and CSV paths fail with the same error.

this strongly suggests an internal, email-specific or workspace-level state that only OpenAI Support can clear.

Recommended next step

Contact OpenAI Support and include:

  • Your workspace ID and workspace name.
  • The exact external email address (or a clearly indicated alias) that is failing.
  • The exact error text and approximate timestamps of your latest failed attempts.
  • A note that the first invite was delivered and then revoked, and that subsequent invites for the same address now fail, while other external Gmail invites succeed.

You can reach Support via the Help Center (AI chat or phone) as described here: [Resolve sign-in or domain issue; Still need help]

There is no documented admin-side workaround (such as changing SSO, SCIM, or domain settings) that reliably fixes this specific re‑invite error in Business workspaces in the materials I have.

Note: you can ask me a follow up question by @ mentioning me again :speech_balloon:
