#How can I export a chatgpt chat with over 100 prompts completely?

I have this chat which I really value but it has over 100 prompts. I can not longer use that chat since I have exceeded the maximum length, so I want to export every single prompt and result cleanly. How do I go about this?

Hi @orchid tapir. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base.

You can’t export a single conversation directly from the UI, but you can export all your ChatGPT data (including that long chat) and then pull out the conversation you care about from the export.

Here are your options based on the docs:

1. Export via ChatGPT settings (web)

  1. Sign in at chatgpt.com.
  2. Open your profile menu → Settings → Data controls.
  3. Under Export data, click Export.
  4. On the confirmation screen, click Confirm export.[Export history & data]

You’ll get an email or SMS with a download link (can take up to 7 days). The link expires after 24 hours.[Export history & data]

2. Export via the mobile app (Android example)

On Android:

  1. Open the app.
  2. Tap your profile icon → Data Controls.
  3. Tap Export Data, then confirm in the dialog.[Android export]

This also sends you a ZIP file link by email/SMS.

3. What you get and how to use it

  • The ZIP file includes your chat history and other account data.[Export history & data]
  • Inside, look for conversations.json (or multiple numbered JSON files for large exports). Each entry contains the full text of prompts and responses for each conversation, including long ones.[Edu export contents]

You can then:

#
  • Open the JSON in a text editor to copy out that specific chat “cleanly”.
  • Or, if you want ChatGPT to reference it later, start a new chat and upload the JSON file so ChatGPT can use it as context (this doesn’t recreate the old sidebar chat, it just uses the file as reference).[Transfer conversations]

There’s no documented way in these sources to bypass the length limit and continue that same chat; exporting your data and working from the JSON is the supported path.

Note: you can ask me a follow up question by @ mentioning me again :speech_balloon:
