Let’s Reactivate the Custom GPT Ecosystem
Suggestion for OpenAI:
I think a simple way to truly reactivate the Custom GPT creator ecosystem would be to let each creator manage an allowed-users list for their GPT.
OpenAI does not need to manage payments, subscriptions, taxes, invoicing, or revenue sharing. That part can stay in the hands of the creator, using Stripe, Gumroad, Patreon, direct invoicing, private B2B licenses, or any external system that fits their country’s regulations.
What would be extremely powerful is a basic access-control layer:
- authorized users by email, domain, invitation, or token;
- creator-defined tiers such as Free, Pro, Premium, or Enterprise;
- instruction blocks activated depending on the user’s tier;
- a configurable message for users without access;
- optionally, external validation through an API/action.
This would allow creators to build real products inside ChatGPT without requiring OpenAI to build a full marketplace from day one.
Right now, many useful GPTs remain just public demos because creators cannot control who gets access or what experience each user receives. That forces creators to move the product outside ChatGPT, build external websites, custom backends, or full applications just to handle access.
The request is simple:
We are not asking OpenAI to pay us.
We are not asking OpenAI to manage our taxes.
We are not asking for a full App Store.
We are asking for the ability to control access to our own Custom GPTs and define different experience levels for users.
With that, the GPT Store could evolve from a catalog of GPTs into a real platform for creators, professionals, educators, consultants, and small businesses.
