#Image generation limit did not reset after upgrading from Go to Plus

I upgraded from ChatGPT Go to ChatGPT Plus today because I hit the image generation limit. When the limit appeared, I was given an option suggesting that upgrading to Plus would increase my image generation quota.

However, after upgrading I still cannot generate images. The system shows a message saying something like:

“You’ve hit the Plus plan limit for image generations. You can create more images when the limit resets in X hours.”

I have not generated any images since upgrading to Plus, so it seems like the previous limit window carried over instead of resetting.

Has anyone else experienced this when upgrading plans? Did the limit clear automatically once the timer expired, or did support need to reset it?

Hi @little sparrow. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base.

The knowledge sources don’t describe this exact “Go → Plus” image-limit carryover behavior, so I can’t confirm whether the limit should reset immediately on upgrade.

What they do say is:

  • Image generation has its own rate limits, separate from text/model limits, and you must wait for the limit window to reset once you hit it. [Image limits; Free tier FAQ]
  • For text usage, limits do reset when you upgrade from Free to a paid plan. [Free tier FAQ]
However, there is no explicit statement that image limits reset immediately when upgrading between paid tiers (e.g., Go → Plus).

Because of that gap, I can’t say with confidence whether what you’re seeing is a bug or expected behavior. Practically, you have two options:

  1. Wait for the current image-limit window to expire and see if image generation starts working under the Plus limits once the timer runs out.
  2. Contact OpenAI support so they can check your account and, if needed, manually adjust/reset your limits. You can reach them via the Help Center (chat widget or the listed support channels). [Usage limits help]

So: others may see the same carryover window, but the docs don’t say whether it’s intentional. If the timer expiry doesn’t fix it, support intervention is likely required.
