#Business workspace image upload limit

Hi everyone,

I’m using ChatGPT Business (2 seats) and recently started hitting a limit specifically when uploading/analyzing images.

What happens:

  • I can upload/analyze about 1–2 images, then I get a message like: “Your usage will reset on Feb 15. To access more, please buy credits.”
  • Switching to another chat sometimes lets me upload 1–2 more images, but then the same limit triggers again.
  • This occurs on both web and desktop (not device-specific).

Billing page details:

  • Business plan (monthly), 2/2 seats in use
  • “Credit usage” shows 0/0 credits used (100%)
  • There is an “Add credits” button
  • Next cycle shows in ~18 days (and I also see the reset date message)

Context:

  • We have 2 seats. Two people were using the same login, and a third person uses a different account (not simultaneously, but the workspace usage may be shared).

Questions:

  1. Is this behavior expected when the workspace hits plan limits for image/vision usage?
  2. Does ChatGPT Business have a separate quota for image uploads/vision that can be exhausted quickly?
  3. Would adding credits be the only way to restore image uploads immediately, or is there another setting/usage control?
  4. Is sharing one login across two people likely to cause faster rate-limiting/quota enforcement even if not used at the same time?

Any guidance on how Business quotas/credits work for image uploads (and best practices for multi-user usage) would be appreciated.

Thanks!

There isn’t a single article that spells out only “image/vision limits for Business,” but we can piece together how this works from the docs on Business plans, file uploads, GPTs, and flexible pricing. I’ll flag where the docs are silent.

1) Is this expected when the workspace hits plan limits for image/vision?

Yes, this is consistent with hitting a plan-included usage limit for an advanced feature (image/vision) on ChatGPT Business:

  • Business workspaces get per‑seat limits for advanced features like Image Gen and other “credit‑gated” capabilities. Once a user exceeds their included limit, they’ll see prompts to buy credits and/or a reset date. [Flexible pricing]
  • Credits are only for advanced features; core features like basic search and file upload don’t consume credits. [Flexible pricing]

The exact per‑seat image/vision allowance for Business is not documented in the provided sources, but the “reset on [date] / buy credits” banner is exactly how hitting those advanced‑feature limits is described.

2) Is there a separate quota for image uploads/vision?

There are several distinct limits that affect image usage:

#
  • File upload limits (apply to all plans, including Business):
    • 20 MB per image
    • 512 MB per file overall
    • 10 GB per end‑user, 100 GB per org
    • Up to 80 file uploads every 3 hours (for paid users; Free is 3/day) [File uploads FAQ; Connected apps]
  • Tool / GPT limits:
    • GPTs and tools (like data analysis and file uploads) share rate limits with ChatGPT usage; if you hit a tool limit, you must wait for it to reset. [GPTs FAQ]
  • Advanced‑feature credit model for Business:
    • Business users have per‑seat included usage for advanced features (which include Image Gen and other “credit‑gated” capabilities). When that’s exhausted, usage can continue only if the workspace has purchased credits. [Flexible pricing]

The docs do not give a numeric “X images per day/week” quota for Business, but they do confirm that advanced features (including image generation and similar) are governed by separate usage and credit limits from core text usage.

3) Is adding credits the only way to restore image uploads immediately?

For Business:

#
  • When a user exhausts their included advanced‑feature usage, and no credits are available, the feature is blocked and the UI will prompt to add credits. [Flexible pricing]
  • Workspace Owners can:
    • Purchase credits via Settings → Billing; credits are pooled across all users. [Flexible pricing]
    • Configure usage alerts to monitor credit consumption. [Flexible pricing]

So, based on the docs:

  • To restore access immediately, the documented path is for the Workspace Owner to add credits.
  • Otherwise, you must wait for the plan’s included usage window to reset (the date you’re seeing in the banner). The exact reset cadence for Business advanced‑feature usage is not specified in the sources.

4) Does sharing one login across two people affect limits?

The docs don’t explicitly discuss “account sharing,” but they do state:

  • Business is designed as a multi‑seat workspace; each user should have their own seat. [ChatGPT Business overview]
  • The Services Agreement prohibits sharing your account credentials or making your account available to anyone else. [Business models & limits]

Implications:

#
  • If two people share one login, all their advanced‑feature usage is pooled into that single user’s per‑seat allowance, so it will be exhausted faster than if each person used their own seat.
  • It also violates the stated policy against sharing credentials. [Business models & limits]

Practical recommendations (within what the docs say)

Based on the documentation:

  1. Stop sharing logins: Assign each person their own seat in the Business workspace so each has their own per‑seat advanced‑feature allowance and you stay within policy. [ChatGPT Business overview]
  2. Have the Workspace Owner check Billing → Usage:
    • Confirm that advanced‑feature usage is what’s triggering the “buy credits / reset date” banner.
    • If you need uninterrupted image/vision usage before the reset, purchase credits from the pooled workspace balance. [Flexible pricing]
  3. Watch file‑upload caps:
    • Ensure you’re under the 20 MB/image and 80‑uploads‑per‑3‑hours limits, and under the 10 GB per‑user / 100 GB per‑org caps. [File uploads FAQ; Connected apps]

If you need the exact numeric image/vision allowance for your specific Business contract, that detail is not in the public help docs; you’d need to contact support or check any plan‑specific documentation in your admin/billing view.
