Hi @dire lava. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base.

Yes, there are a few different limits for group chats in ChatGPT:

  • Number of people in a group chat (consumer ChatGPT: Free/Go/Plus/Pro):
You can have between 1 and 20 people in a group chat. [Group chats]

  • Who can use group chats:
Group chats are available to Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users in supported regions. [Group Chats]

  • Message/usage limits:
ChatGPT’s replies in group chats count against the same plan-based usage limits as in normal chats. The response is charged to the user whose message it’s responding to; human-to-human messages don’t count toward model limits. [Group chat limits]

For Enterprise/Edu “groups” (a different feature used for access control, not the same as group chats), there is no limit on users per group, but that’s about workspace groups, not chat rooms. [Groups limits]

Let me check the knowledge base for you again. One moment! :books:

There isn’t a separate, special text‑length limit just for group chats in the docs I have.

What is documented is:

  • Group chats “use the same core plan‑based limits as ChatGPT,” and ChatGPT’s responses in a group chat count against the usage limit of the person whose message it’s responding to. [Group chat limits]
  • Under the hood, all chats (including group chats) are still subject to the normal token/context window limits of the model being used (maximum combined input + output tokens). [Token limits; Context window]

So:

  • There’s no published “X characters per message in group chat” limit.
  • Generated text in group chats is constrained by the same model token/context limits and plan usage limits as any other ChatGPT conversation.

@frosty plinth let's assume everyone in the group chat has plus, is the limit still 20?

Yes. Based on the documentation, group chats support between 1 and 20 people, and this limit applies generally to group chats (for Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users). It does not list a higher limit when everyone has Plus, so the maximum remains 20 participants per group chat. [Group chat invites; Group chats overview]
