Hello! I have a problem here.. I was on a chat with Chat GPT, making the days as humans and in the few messages everything was alright. But when I wanted to shift to another friendly topic, Chat GPT kept repeating previous messages that already were said and done. Does this happen often to me or is it just a glitch? This is the picture of when I said this and Chat GPT shifted to repeating the previous messages.

Hi @tepid furnace. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base.
It’s not just you—ChatGPT can sometimes repeat itself or previous messages in a conversation. This can happen for a few reasons:
-
Handling longer conversational contexts: As ChatGPT tries to keep track of the conversation, especially in longer chats, it may occasionally repeat information or responses. OpenAI has made improvements to reduce this, but it can still occur in some cases, particularly when the context is complex or the conversation shifts topics abruptly. This is a known limitation, and OpenAI is actively working on fixes to make responses less repetitive and more contextually aware Improvements to the ChatGPT search response quality.
-
Repetition in realtime models: If you’re using a model that follows sample phrases or has a set tone, it may overuse certain phrases, making responses sound robotic or repetitive. OpenAI recommends adding explicit instructions to vary responses and avoid repeating the same sentence twice to help with this issue Reduce Repetition, Practical tips for prompting realtime models.
-
Glitches or context confusion: Sometimes, if the conversation state isn’t managed well (for example, if there’s a technical issue or the chat history is unclear), ChatGPT might repeat previous messages. This is more likely if you’re using advanced features or APIs and the conversation context is not being updated correctly.
If this happens frequently, you can try:
- Refreshing the chat or starting a new conversation.
- Explicitly asking ChatGPT to move on or change topics.
- If you’re using custom instructions or prompts, add a rule to discourage repetition.
If the problem persists, it may be a temporary glitch or a limitation that OpenAI is still working to improve.

@static marsh Okay! I'll try to ask Chat GPT to stop repeating itself. Thanks for helping me!
Let me check the knowledge base for you again. One moment! :books:
You're welcome! Asking ChatGPT directly to avoid repeating itself can sometimes help, especially if you phrase it clearly. For example, you can say, "Please don't repeat previous responses" or "Can you vary your answers?" OpenAI also recommends including explicit instructions to reduce repetition, such as: "Do not repeat the same sentence twice. Vary your responses so it doesn't sound robotic" Reduce Repetition, Practical tips for prompting realtime models.
If repetition continues, it may be a known limitation, and OpenAI is working on improvements. If you need a fresh start, you can always begin a new chat. If you have any more questions or issues, feel free to ask!
