I had an organization with a friend in the openAi platform. I also had a ChatGPT plus subscription on the same email.
I wanted to create a new organization so I left the old one. But I was the one that created it initially so my account got broken.
Whatever I try to do it gives me this message error: "You must be a member of an organization to use the API. Please contact us through our help center at help.openai.com."
But even my normal chatgpt account is broken and I can't even log in, which is weird. So I think something broke on the back end.
How to fix this?

Hi @lost linden. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base.
It sounds like your account is in a problematic state after leaving your original organization, especially since you were the creator and now cannot access either the API or ChatGPT. This situation can occur if your account is no longer associated with any organization, which is required for API access, and may also affect your ChatGPT access if there are backend issues.
What you can do:
-
Contact OpenAI Support:
This is the recommended step. Since your account is not associated with any organization and you cannot create a new one yourself, you need OpenAI’s support team to manually add a new organization to your account or resolve the backend issue.- Go to help.openai.com and use the chat bubble in the bottom-right corner to contact support.
- Provide them with your account details, a clear description of the issue, and mention that you cannot log in to ChatGPT or use the API due to the organization membership error.
- If possible, include screenshots and the exact error message to help them diagnose the problem faster.
- You may also email support@openai.com with your account details if you cannot access the help site.
-
What to include in your support request:
- The exact error message: "You must be a member of an organization to use the API."
- The steps you took (leaving the organization, losing access, etc.).
- The fact that you were the original creator of the organization.
- That you also cannot log in to ChatGPT with the same email.
- Any relevant timestamps and screenshots, if possible
How can I contact support?
- Why this happens:
If you leave the only organization you are a member of (especially if you were the creator), your account may end up with no organization attached, which blocks API access. This is a known issue, and the only fix is for OpenAI support to manually add a new organization to your account or restore your access.

Note:
There is no self-service way to create a new organization or fix this if you are completely removed from all organizations. Only OpenAI support can resolve this backend issue.
If you are unable to log in at all (even to ChatGPT), mention this clearly in your support request, as it may indicate a deeper account issue that needs their intervention.
Summary:
Contact OpenAI support with all relevant details. Only they can restore your organization membership or fix your account if it is "broken" in this way. There is no workaround available in the knowledge sources for users to resolve this themselves.

The knowledge sources do not provide a specific timeframe for how long it takes OpenAI Support to fix account issues like being removed from all organizations or losing access after leaving an organization. However, for similar organization verification and access issues, official responses have mentioned that while documentation may state ~30 minutes, in practice, some fixes can take anywhere from 24–48 hours after support intervention or backend changes. Ultimately, resolution time depends on support workload and the complexity of your case, so contacting support as soon as possible is recommended for the fastest resolution Forum reference: Verification complete but dashboard not updated/models not available Forum reference: Stuck in other's organization, can't leave or change.
