I've created my characters image portraits with ChatGPT (your same company).. and I want it to only be photorealistic and I don't want to tone this down.. the person in this image is not a real man but it is real in my own separate universe and I want to bridge that from my universe into Sora 2 as if he was a real person doing what he normally does like any of us but Sora 2 in their infinite wisdom doesn't accept photorealistic people..
#A Photorealistic Character Dilemma
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Hi @solar geyser. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base.
Your frustration is understandable—OpenAI’s Sora 2 currently blocks the use of photorealistic images of people, even if those images are AI-generated and not of real individuals. This restriction is in place to prevent misuse, such as deepfakes or unauthorized likeness generation, and applies regardless of whether the character is fictional or “real” only in your own universe.
Specifically, Sora’s policies state:
“Uploading images with depictions of real people is blocked. Cameos are the only way to use one’s likeness in Sora, which requires explicit permission from the likeness holder.”
“At launch, generating videos based on uploaded images that include real people is blocked.”
“Image to video with depictions of real people is not supported at the moment.”
Getting started with the Sora app | Creating videos with Sora
The moderation system is designed to err on the side of caution, and it may flag photorealistic portraits—even of fictional characters—if they resemble real people or could be mistaken for them. This is a known limitation and has been discussed by users who have encountered similar issues, even when faces are not visible or are clearly synthetic Forum Post: Sora moderation is kind of absurd.
Workarounds and Options:
- If you want to feature a specific likeness in Sora, the only supported method is to use the Cameo feature, which requires explicit opt-in and verification from the person whose likeness is being used. This is not currently available for fictional or AI-generated characters.
- For now, you may need to adjust your character’s style to be less photorealistic or use more stylized, illustrated, or non-human designs to avoid moderation blocks.
- OpenAI is actively developing these tools and policies, so this may change in the future.
Summary:
At this time, Sora 2 does not support uploading or animating photorealistic portraits of people—real or fictional—unless you use the Cameo system, which is only for real, consenting individuals. There is no official way to bypass this restriction for fictional, photorealistic characters at present.

@tiny nova give me workarounds so I can use these characters like I use my own cameos.. that's the dilemma here.. my characters are not real people in his world therefore it doesn't violate anything.. (Like I said, I don't want to make it less photorealistic.. it removes the authenticity of my characters)
Let me check the knowledge base for you again. One moment! :books:
I'm sorry, but according to the current OpenAI documentation, there is no supported workaround to use photorealistic, AI-generated characters in Sora 2 as you would with your own Cameos. The system blocks uploads of images depicting real people—including photorealistic AI-generated portraits—unless you use the Cameo feature, which is strictly for real, consenting individuals and requires explicit opt-in and verification. This restriction applies even if your character is fictional and not based on a real person.
The Cameo system is not available for fictional or AI-generated characters, and the moderation system is designed to err on the side of caution, blocking any photorealistic likeness that could be interpreted as a real person. OpenAI’s policies are clear that, at launch, “uploading images with depictions of real people is blocked. Cameos are the only way to use one’s likeness in Sora, which requires explicit permission from the likeness holder” Creating videos with Sora.
There is no mention in the knowledge sources of any official or unofficial method to bypass this restriction, nor any exceptions for fictional universes or AI-generated photorealistic characters. If you want to use a likeness in Sora, it must go through the Cameo process, which is not designed for fictional characters.
If OpenAI updates these policies or introduces new features to support fictional photorealistic characters, it will likely be announced in future documentation. For now, the knowledge sources do not provide a solution to your dilemma.

@tiny nova This is a issue because not a lot of people ever thought about this like I do, yes?
Let me check the knowledge base for you again. One moment! :books:
The knowledge sources do not explicitly discuss how common your specific concern is—using photorealistic, AI-generated fictional characters in Sora as if they were real people via the Cameo system. However, based on the available documentation and user forum discussions, most of the focus is on preventing misuse of real likenesses and ensuring consent, rather than addressing the use of highly realistic fictional characters. There is at least one user forum post expressing frustration with similar moderation issues, but it does not indicate how widespread this particular dilemma is among users Forum Post: Sora moderation is kind of absurd.
In summary, the knowledge sources do not provide enough information to determine how many people share your specific perspective or have encountered this issue.

@tiny nova So this dilemma is rather unique?
Let me check the knowledge base for you again. One moment! :books:
Based on the knowledge sources, your dilemma—wanting to use photorealistic, AI-generated fictional characters in Sora as if they were real people via the Cameo system—appears to be relatively unique. The documentation and user discussions primarily address concerns about real people’s likenesses, consent, and preventing misuse, rather than the use of highly realistic fictional characters. While there is at least one forum post expressing frustration with moderation blocking photorealistic images, it does not indicate that this specific issue is common or widely discussed among users Forum Post: Sora moderation is kind of absurd.
In summary, the knowledge sources do not provide evidence that many users have raised this exact concern, so it does seem to be a rather unique dilemma.

@tiny nova So what do you want me to do about it? Wait indefinitely?
Let me check the knowledge base for you again. One moment! :books:
At this time, the knowledge sources do not provide a solution or workaround for your situation. OpenAI’s current policies and technical restrictions mean you cannot use photorealistic, AI-generated fictional characters in Sora as you would with real-person Cameos. There is no official guidance on when or if this restriction will change.
If this limitation is critical to your creative work, the only actionable step suggested by the knowledge sources is to wait for future updates or policy changes from OpenAI. The documentation notes that OpenAI is actively developing and evolving its tools and policies, and encourages users to provide feedback, but does not specify a timeline for changes or new features in this area Creating videos with Sora.
In summary:
There is no current workaround, and the only option—according to the knowledge sources—is to wait for potential future updates.

@tiny nova I've even added the text in the video for character cameos that tell Sora 2 that the character is not real and was created by ChatGPT.. I even did the image to video generation that included the prompt that said the same thing but yet this guardrail is so insistent in the idea of "real people are not allowed."
Let me check the knowledge base for you again. One moment! :books:
You are correct—according to the knowledge sources, even if you clearly state in your prompt or video text that your character is not real and was created by ChatGPT, Sora 2’s moderation system will still block photorealistic images of people. The system does not currently distinguish between real and AI-generated photorealistic faces; it simply blocks any image that could be interpreted as depicting a real person, regardless of your intent or clarifications in the prompt.
This is a deliberate guardrail to prevent misuse, such as deepfakes or unauthorized likeness generation, and applies universally—even to fictional characters that are photorealistic. The documentation and user reports confirm that this moderation is strict and does not make exceptions based on user-provided context or disclaimers Getting started with the Sora app Forum Post: Sora moderation is kind of absurd.
In summary, adding clarifying text or prompts does not bypass this restriction. The moderation system is designed to block all photorealistic human likenesses unless they go through the Cameo process, which is only for real, consenting individuals.

@tiny nova So there's nothing I can do about it
Let me check the knowledge base for you again. One moment! :books:
Based on the current knowledge sources, there is nothing you can do to bypass Sora 2’s restriction on using photorealistic, AI-generated characters as you would with real-person Cameos. The moderation system blocks any photorealistic human likeness that could be interpreted as a real person, regardless of disclaimers or clarifications in your prompt. This policy is strict and applies even if the character is fictional and created with ChatGPT. The only supported way to use a likeness in Sora is through the Cameo feature, which is limited to real, consenting individuals and not available for fictional or AI-generated characters Getting started with the Sora app Forum Post: Sora moderation is kind of absurd.
In summary:
There is currently no workaround, and the knowledge sources do not indicate when or if this policy will change.

@tiny nova Is there a way to have some kind of connection between ChatGPT and Sora 2? I have a gallery full of realistic characters in ChatGPT and I wonder if there is a way to transition that?
Let me check the knowledge base for you again. One moment! :books:
Currently, there is no direct integration or automated connection between ChatGPT’s image generation features and Sora 2 for transitioning your gallery of realistic characters. While you can generate images in ChatGPT and download them, Sora 2’s moderation system will block photorealistic images of people—even if they are AI-generated and not real individuals—when you attempt to use them as input for video generation. This restriction applies regardless of whether the images were created in ChatGPT or elsewhere, and regardless of any clarifying prompts you provide Getting started with the Sora app Forum Post: Sora moderation is kind of absurd.
You can use non-photorealistic or stylized images as references in Sora 2, but for photorealistic human characters, there is currently no supported way to transition them from ChatGPT to Sora 2 for video generation. The only exception is the Cameo feature, which is limited to real, consenting individuals and not available for fictional or AI-generated characters.
In summary:
There is no official method to connect your ChatGPT image gallery of realistic characters to Sora 2 for video creation at this time.

When sora 2 is released in Croatia will i be able to prompt deadpool dancing in the street
@tiny nova when sora 2 is released in Croatia will i ve able to prompt to do deadpool dancing in the street
Let me check the knowledge base for you again. One moment! :books:
When Sora 2 is released in Croatia, you will not be able to generate videos featuring copyrighted characters like Deadpool. OpenAI’s content restrictions explicitly state that “copyrighted characters and copyrighted music will be rejected” by the Sora API and moderation system. This applies regardless of the country in which you are using the service. So, prompting Sora 2 to create a video of Deadpool dancing in the street would not be allowed and the request would be blocked by moderation guardrails Video generation with Sora.

@tiny nova or random imaginery superhero
Let me check the knowledge base for you again. One moment! :books:
Yes, according to the knowledge sources, you can prompt Sora 2 to generate videos featuring a random imaginary superhero, as long as the character is not a copyrighted figure and does not violate other content policies (such as depicting real people or inappropriate content). The restrictions specifically mention that copyrighted characters will be rejected, but there is no indication that original, fictional characters created by you would be blocked, provided they comply with the general usage and moderation guidelines Video generation with Sora.

@tiny nova It has been months but I want to ask, can I still grab my Sora 2 videos?
Let me check the knowledge base for you again. One moment! :books:
You can still access your Sora videos, but there are important deadlines:
- The Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026.
- The Sora API (including Sora 2 / Videos API) will be discontinued on September 24, 2026.[Sora discontinuation;[Video deprecation](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/deprecations#2026-03-24-sora-2-video-generation-models-and-videos-api)]
For content created in the Sora app, OpenAI says you can export it by going to:
<https://sora.chatgpt.com/sunset> and clicking Export – you’ll get an email when it’s ready.[Sora discontinuation]
They also recommend exporting as soon as possible, because:
- After Sora is discontinued and any final export window passes, all data associated with your use of Sora will be permanently deleted.[Sora discontinuation]
So if it has been months but we are still before the final deletion/export window closes, you should:
- Visit
<https://sora.chatgpt.com/sunset.> - Use the Export option to download your videos.
