hello! i know that assistant will shut down next year so it will prove to be useless but -- while i doubt it -- vector stores will remain untouched right? i feel like this is a definite no, surely information would be more upfront if not and it is independent, but just to be safe. If this tool becomes deprecated the way assistants plans to be, I would like to explore other options for storage

Hi @slow elbow. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base.
You are correct to be cautious. According to the official OpenAI documentation, the Assistants API—including its vector store functionality—is being deprecated and will be fully shut down on August 26, 2026. The vector stores are not independent; they are tightly integrated with the Assistants API and its File Search tool. Once the Assistants API is sunset, the associated vector store endpoints and storage will also be discontinued. This is explicitly stated in the deprecation notice:
After achieving feature parity in the Responses API, we've deprecated the Assistants API. It will shut down on August 26, 2026. Follow the migration guide to update your integration. Learn more.

Additionally, the documentation for File Search and vector stores is marked as "Deprecated," and all references indicate that these features are part of the Assistants API, not standalone services. There is no indication in the knowledge sources that vector stores will remain available after the Assistants API is shut down. The recommended path is to migrate to the Responses API and explore alternative storage or retrieval solutions as needed for your use case Deprecation history.
In summary:
Vector stores will not remain available after the Assistants API is shut down. If you rely on this feature, you should plan to migrate to supported alternatives before August 26, 2026.
