At this time, GPT-5 is not yet supported in the OpenAI Assistants API. Multiple users have reported receiving errors such as “The requested model ‘gpt-5’ cannot be used with the Assistants API” when attempting to select or use GPT-5 (and its variants) with Assistants, even after adding it to their allowed models. Official responses from OpenAI support indicate that GPT-5 availability in the Assistants API is rolling out gradually and is not yet accessible to all users or regions. If you do not see GPT-5 as an option in the Assistants API, this is expected until the rollout is complete. You may need to wait until your account and region are included in the rollout. In the meantime, GPT-5 is available via other endpoints such as the Responses and Completions APIs Forum: GPT-5 not showing up in Assistants Forum: 400 The requested model 'gpt-5' cannot be used with the Assistants API.

If you need GPT-5 capabilities for agentic workflows, consider using the Responses API or the Agents SDK, which do support GPT-5 models Openai-agents-python: Models.
