#GPT 4O download question

On Monday, I used ChatGPT-4o to perform a grammar check on a document. It successfully completed the grammar check and generated a .docx file with the original content directly modified. I was able to download the file without any issues.

Today, I tried to perform another grammar check. While the grammar check itself was completed successfully, generating a .docx file with the modified content either resulted in an error message stating that the file was too large or only produced a .docx file containing the portions that needed to be revised. My document is only around 3 MB, so I don’t believe it’s actually too large.

In addition to the "file too large" error, I sometimes also encounter broken link errors that prevent me from downloading the file.

Hi @solar marten. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base.

Based on the information in the knowledge sources, here are some possible reasons and solutions for the issues you’re experiencing with downloading .docx files generated by ChatGPT-4o:

  1. File Size and Token Limits
Even though your document is only ~3 MB, OpenAI imposes both file size and token count limits on uploads and generated files. For file uploads and downloads in ChatGPT, the hard limit is 512MB per file, and for text/document files, there is a cap of 2 million tokens per file. However, practical issues can arise with much smaller files if the document is complex or contains a lot of formatting, which can increase the token count or processing complexity. If your document approaches these limits, you may see errors like "file too large" or receive only partial output in the generated file. This can also happen if the model is unable to process the entire document in one go due to context window or processing constraints File Uploads FAQ.

  2. Broken Link or Download Errors
Download errors such as "broken link" or "file not found" can occur if the file was not generated properly, expired, or if the Code Interpreter/Data Analysis tool was not enabled for the GPT. Files generated by ChatGPT are only available for a limited time, and if you try to download after this window, the link may break. Additionally, if the GPT you are using does not have the Code Interpreter & Data Analysis tool enabled, it may not be able to generate downloadable files at all Why can't I download files generated by my custom GPT? Troubleshooting ChatGPT Error Messages.

  1. Partial Output
If only the revised portions are included in the .docx file, it may be due to the way the GPT is instructed or a limitation in how much content can be processed and output at once. Large or complex documents may be truncated or summarized if they exceed processing limits.

What you can try:

  • Ensure the Code Interpreter & Data Analysis tool is enabled for your GPT if you are using a custom GPT.
  • Try splitting your document into smaller sections and processing them separately.
  • Download the file as soon as it is generated to avoid expiration issues.
  • If you continue to see "file too large" errors with a 3 MB document, check if the document contains complex formatting or embedded objects that could increase processing complexity.
  • If you encounter persistent issues, try clearing your browser cache, disabling extensions, or using a different browser or network, as sometimes local issues can interfere with downloads Troubleshooting ChatGPT Error Messages.

If these steps do not resolve your issue, you may need to contact OpenAI support for further assistance.

@steady crystalThe reason I report this issue is it was totally fine on Monday but suddenly went wrong today. I'm confused; why can't I successfully generate it again today?

I'm sorry for the confusion you're experiencing. Based on the knowledge sources, there is no explicit explanation for why a file generation and download process that worked on Monday would suddenly fail on a later day with the same type of document. However, here are some relevant points from the documentation:

  • File and Token Limits: The file size and token limits have not changed recently, and your file (3 MB) should be well within the 512MB and 2 million token caps for .docx files File Uploads FAQ.
  • Temporary Issues: The documentation notes that technical issues, including download errors and "file too large" messages, can sometimes be caused by transient server-side problems or changes in how files are processed. These issues may resolve on their own or may be related to temporary backend changes or bugs Troubleshooting ChatGPT Error Messages.
  • Recent Model Updates: OpenAI regularly updates its models and platform, which can sometimes introduce unexpected changes in behavior or new bugs, even if nothing has changed on your end Model Release Notes.

Unfortunately, the knowledge sources do not provide a specific reason for a sudden change in file generation success from one day to the next. If the issue persists, it may be due to a temporary backend problem or a recent update affecting file handling. If so, retrying later or reaching out to OpenAI support would be the recommended next steps.
