I'm glad you created this report. People have been talking about this bug for days but I didn't see an actual report here on it. I'll refer others here so they can add their +1 and maybe some comments to help identify the pattern. Thanks.

same exact here was just about to submit a report and found this.
i am having an issue to where some chats are loading on the browser interface but not on other application.
was moving old chats into folders and then issue occurred.
update: when i search chats will show up but still cannot see them

Apparently the company recognized the issue and thought they addressed it. They need a new nudge to understand the issue has not been completely fixed.

Copied this for others from your post, @hardy adder - and to help searches for the issue.

When I log in to ChatGPT all my chats from the sidebar have gone missing, except on projects or if I use the search bar. it’s been happening since the early hours of 4th August 2025. I’ve tried clearing cookies, signing in and out, and different platforms like the web, the iOS app, the Mac app, on iPhone, iOS and windows but nothing works, all chats from the sidebar are missing

+1 my chat history is truncated after about 10, then I select the bottom one, go back and select the list again and a few more show up, and repeat. But that only loads up to about maybe 25 or 30 and then none of the older chats show at all. Some of the missing ones are highly important to me in my daily life, so please please please fix this. Please 🙏

Same here.

Two days ago, the web version failed to show the right history while the iPhone app worked. Now the web history is fixed, but the iPhone’s is not.

For this issue, I have a hypothesis: ChatGPT’s PostgreSQL shared nodes are not syncing data correctly.

Reponses from companies these days go through bot filters for Customer Support people who can't articulate well. 😆

most of my chats are missing. most of the ones existing show ”hmm... something seems to have gone wrong” in the android app, but work fine on the webui.

I tried to contact ChatGPT support and recommended forwarding the issue to the backend team for further checks. I included two gists containing my user info and API call data—one is normal, and the other is missing almost the entire history. Maybe the whole team is working on the GPT-5 release, so there is no update yet.

my main chatlog is completely missing on phone, i could see it briefly on desktop and i thankfully saved it, but now i can't see it there either.

Woohoo! I finally joined the club. My Android chat list reset but the list in the browser is still there.

Now that this has happened, I went to Settings > Data Controls > Export Data, and exported all data to ensure I still have it.

And now I'll report my own experience to OpenAI.

That's all we can do.

Same issue here, I cannot see more than 4 chats in the history section, this happen on Android Chatgpt [version 1.2025.217(10)]

My chats are fully missing now! Using Android app. it started a few days ago. Maybe 8:00 or so would show up, then when I pressed the bottom one a few more would show up if I went to the menu bar again, and so on until it showed about maybe 20 but then that's all it would show. Then yesterday, only about five or six or eight would show, and now today, only two showed and then now they completely disappeared! 🙁 project folders still show most of their chats but the chat history on the main menu is now gone and I don't remember exactly what to search for to find them! 🙁 please implement a fix. What's going on? Please help!

Yup, I had one left and now it's gone haha
Remember folks, while they should know this is still happening, they don't acknowledge it. They're bad at communication. So we need to inform support (respectfully) that the problem persists.
Go to ChatGPT Settings, Help Center, and open a chat if you haven't already. Check the FAQ, maybe the did document this.
If not, chat with the bot. Get a confirmation and then tell it you want the report to go to staff. Be clear, brief, and civil.
When Support responds, get a confirmation, make sure they know there are many people with this issue.
Be firm but professional and friendly. All Support can do is to report the issue to Engineering. Help them to take it that far and our task is done.

I have tried to contact with support for more than a week and told them contact eng team to check this. But they simply repeatedly required screen recording to reproduce it… Ignoring two API calling data I have provided. I’m not sure if eng team have known this issue or not.

I thought I was the only one with this issues. Glad to think to check discord and not just scroll Reddit.

My iPhone app shows all chats. My windows does not. Chats I have moved or deleted on my PC are still present on my iPhone, and the app says it is unable to delete. New that’s from today appear, and then disappear , only to reappear if I refresh or close the app. The only mainstays are the chats from the previous two days

+1 / I am the same, first general chats disappeared (the ones that are not inside projects) .. but now I have already lost important chats inside projects as well. I don't have backup of all chats.

Everyone - note also that if you go to Settings > Data Controls > Export Data, you'll get a download of all of your chats, audio, images, etc. Your stuff isn't gone, it's just not showing in the UI.
Do report your experience to the company as I've suggested and I'm sure we'll all be able to see our stuff again at some point.

I didn't know that but it makes sense. Doesn't the Team account holder have rights to do a data export? That would seem to be a requirement for administrative purposes ... getting a backup for a team is arguably more important than individual backups.

And to be clear, you can still Export even if you don't see the chats. I have almost no chats in my list anymore but I just got a 400MB download with everything from my history.

Wow, that's amazing.
OK, let's be idealistic and trust that if chats are still on the server for Plus accounts that it's the same for Teams users.
The response from Support indicates they are still not aware of the nature of the issue. No, chats weren't deleted or archived. Note that I mentioned that in my report to them. It would be good for anyone else reporting this issue that we have already checked for these things (after you do of course) and kick it right back to them. As always, be cordial - they don't know until they know.

Upon reviewing our system, we can confirm that several customers have reported experiencing the same issue. This is currently a known concern, and our engineering team is actively investigating and gathering additional information to identify the root cause and implement a solution.

Hi, same Problem and the chats are not gone but only hidden- I can access them through projects (if they have projects) or search- it happened at 13.8.2025 at 8oclock german time during defining new project names and moving older chats into the new projects. Look here: #community-help message

There are at least three components:

  1. OpenAI creates the large zip
  2. OpenAI sends you an email with a link.
  3. You open your browser to that link and your browser starts to download the zip.

If the email says the file is too large, that's one issue ... on the OpenAI side.
If you get an email with a link but your browser can't download the large file, that's a different issue ... on your side.

Let's find the issue. You're being too vague.

"from their end" ... that's very possible but not "likely". If that really is the case, they have an issue and it should be reported. (Sigh, I know...)
But the issue may be with your browser. There might be a download limit in your settings. I can't help with that because there are too many variables.

Copy/paste the link in a different browser and see if you can get the file.
If that doesn't work, but the download breaks in a different place, then the issue is client-side, not server-side. Try a different file download tool. I'd say "cURL" or "wget" but I'm guessing you don't use those. Look for a tool to download large zip files.

Coming back... if their server doesn't allow download of files larger than 600MB, that's ... weird .... because they have millions of users and this must have come up before. I'd have a hard time believing they have that limitation given the volume of data that their clients generate.

Of course, we all do, but there's a feeling of comfort in knowing you have everything on your PC even if you can't see it in the UI.

Hmmm, OK if you're sure about that then the issue does seem to be on their side. Are you using PC/Mac or mobile?

So I got 128 chats back today ( bit number 8? nah ). Search easily pulls back anything prior to that. I'm sure that over time they'll all be visible, or maybe we'll get folders and we won't care about this list anymore. 🙏 😀
