Can ChatGPT store indefinitely many conversations? Would it negatively affect performance?

Hi @silver ginkgo. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base.

ChatGPT does not have a stated hard storage limit for the number of conversations (chats) you can keep in your account. Chats are saved to your account until you manually delete them. If you delete a chat, it is removed from your account immediately and scheduled for permanent deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days, unless required for security or legal reasons. Archived chats are retained just like unarchived chats and simply hidden from your sidebar, not deleted. There is no mention in the knowledge sources of a maximum number of conversations you can store, nor any indication that storing many conversations would negatively affect ChatGPT’s performance for the user. However, there is no explicit confirmation that storage is truly unlimited, only that no storage cap is currently enforced or documented for chat history Chat and File Retention Policies in ChatGPT.

For saved memories (the feature where ChatGPT remembers details about you), there is a storage limit, and you will be notified if you reach it. But for chat history reference, there is no storage limit Memory FAQ.

In summary:

  • There is no documented storage limit for conversations (chat history).
  • No evidence in the knowledge sources suggests that storing many conversations will negatively affect performance.
  • Saved memories have a storage limit, but chat history does not.
