Bug Report: Distorted image and poor quality
`Steps to Reproduce`

I ask chat gpt for a manga-style image, giving it all the details of what I want, so that it generates the image.

`Expected Result`

I expect chat gpt to generate what I asked it for.
I report that I am a free member of chat gpt.

`Actual Result`

The result of the image that chat gpt gives me, at each request, is distorted, whether it is the face, the fingers, the body, the whole character is distorted and unrecognizable.
It has been three days that chat gpt for free accounts generates bad images. Despite the accuracy of the requests. And the landscape images are also distorted, it does not only concern manga or manhwa-style characters. Whether it is in color or black and white, all the images that I ask are distorted.

`Environment`

Windows 10, Google chrome

Is there no one to help?
the image quality is disastrous.
the bug is still there

My problem is still not resolved. Has no one found a solution or someone to help me? This image bug has been going on for almost a week now.

I’m writing once again regarding the persistent issue of distorted images generated through ChatGPT. Despite my previous attempts to resolve the problem, the quality of the images remains poor and deformed, and there has been no improvement.

This issue started several days ago in July, and I’ve noticed that I am not the only one facing this. Many users have reported the same problem on Discord, yet it seems that no action has been taken to address it. It’s becoming incredibly frustrating, as I had no issues with image quality previously, and this bug is severely affecting my experience with ChatGPT.

I feel that my case, along with many others, has been overlooked, and the situation is becoming unacceptable. I urge you to prioritize resolving this issue as soon as possible.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I hope to hear back from you soon with a concrete solution.

does anyone have any news regarding the generation of distorted images of chatgpt?
there has been improvement or not at all?
for my part, it’s still the bug, chatgpt has become unusable to generate good images.

All images, no matter which style, have weird quality now, it's completely broken. ChatGPT is broken at all, guess it's because of marketing to push the hype about GPT-5

I am also getting very distorted images on chagpt.

But as always, OpenAI doesn't care, they only see their release and I don't think they care about bugs.

I got answer:
``Thank you for reaching out to OpenAI Support.

We completely understand how important it is for generated images to appear as expected, especially when using these tools for creative or professional purposes. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. Rest assured we are here to help.

If you’re experiencing distortion in generated images, here are a few helpful tips:
Use clear and specific prompts (e.g., "A watercolor painting of a lighthouse at sunset").
Avoid combining too many conflicting ideas in a single prompt.
Try the same prompt in both Sora and DALL·E to compare output.
Additionally, ChatGPT offers image generation through DALL-E. DALL·E is OpenAI’s image generation model that enables users to create images from natural language prompts.

Using DALL·E in ChatGPT
Access the Image Tool: In ChatGPT, you can generate images by selecting the "Create image" option in the tools menu or simply typing a prompt that describes the image you want.
Write a Prompt: Provide a detailed description of the image you'd like to generate. For example: "A photorealistic image of a sunset over a mountain range with a lake in the foreground."
Generate the Image: ChatGPT will process your request and generate the image using DALL·E.
For more details, check out Creating images in ChatGPT.

Thank you for your understanding. Please let me know if you have further questions.``

Yeah, as always, this isn't an answer. It's the proof that they don't care. Once again, they're blaming the user, even though the issue clearly is from their side. That's the same with every AI company.

I tried again:
``Thank you for getting back to OpenAI Support.

We’ve reviewed your description and confirmed that even with hyper-detailed prompts, current image generation models may still produce results that appear distorted or inconsistent. This can happen for a variety of reasons, including:
The model’s interpretation of abstract or imaginative elements like “hyper realistic anthropomorphic animals”
Limitations in spatial rendering, anatomy, or texture consistency
It’s worth noting that while ChatGPT strives to provide accurate and helpful information, it may not always "tell the truth" in the traditional sense. You can learn more about how it works and its limitations in this article: Does ChatGPT tell the truth?

We’ve logged your report and passed this with our team for the future improvements of ChatGPT. Feedback like this from our users like you help us shape the future of ChatGPT.

Thank you for your understanding. Please let me know if you have further questions.

**I understand your request and agree that your examples show a clear and persistent issue with image generation quality on the free version of ChatGPT. However, as an AI support agent, I do not have the ability to directly submit or escalate bug reports—including images—to the OpenAI engineering or product teams. Here’s what’s happening:

  • Feedback and detailed complaints like yours are seen and used by OpenAI to monitor user-reported issues and product health trends.
  • Currently, there is no direct ticketing or bug report system where I—or any AI support—can forward specific user uploads or attachments to engineers.
  • The Help Center and Community Forum are monitored by OpenAI staff, where repeating your report (with example images if possible) gives it more visibility. What you can do:
  • Save these images and details as documentation.
  • If OpenAI adds a formal method for submitting bug reports with attachments, make sure to use it for your report.
  • Consider posting in the OpenAI Community Forum for broader visibility and possible staff engagement. I know this limitation is frustrating and not the immediate action you’re hoping for. Your efforts in documenting and bringing attention to this issue are genuinely valuable. If you’d like, I can help you draft a message for the Community Forum that fully describes the bug with your supporting images. Would you like assistance with that?**

I always request an escalation. Otherwise, the operator (AI) will not do that. However, I have good news. It appears that they have fixed the promblem. I get now high quality images like from Sora.

short roost
#

I have narrowed down the source of error. When I request an image on ChatGPT on webplatform, I get malformed images. If I use desktop app (Windows), I do not get malformed.

And the help center conversation has gone forward.

``Thank you for getting back to OpenAI Support and for providing the information.

Sorry about the trouble. Sometimes, users of ChatGPT might see errors like 'Something went wrong' or similar. The error you've experienced could be due to a range of factors. It might be an issue on our end or possibly a problem with your internet connection.

Here are some steps you can take to try and resolve the issue:

  1. Retry the request again later - this often solves the problem.
  2. Visit our status page to check for any active outages that might be temporarily impacting the service.
  3. Clear your browser's cache and cookies.
  4. If you're using a VPN, try disabling it.
  5. Try using an incognito browser or a different internet browser/computer. Sometimes, a security add-in or extension can cause this type of error.
  6. Disable any cookie blockers you might have enabled.
  7. Consider connecting to a different network, such as switching from WiFi to a cellular/mobile network

Even without a reported outage or issues with your network, these errors can randomly occur. While they're less common for ChatGPT Plus subscribers, they can still occur from time to time. In most cases, retrying the request later resolves the problem.

If the issue persist, would you mind reproducing the issue and sharing a HAR file? The URL of the page (not the share URL) will also help us investigate this further.

To download a HAR file:
``

#

``

  1. Open Developer Tools You can do this by right-clicking on the webpage and selecting "Inspect", or by pressing Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Opt+I (Mac).

  2. Head over to the Network Tab Once the developer tools are open, click on the "Network" tab.

  3. Check the "Preserve log" box

  4. Make sure "All" is selected underneath the filter section

  5. Click the crossed circle button to clear any existing logs from the network tab

  6. Refresh the webpage Doing this will allow us to capture the network requests.

  7. Reproduce the issue while the network requests are recorded

  8. Click the download button, Export HAR, to download, and save the file to your computer: Save as HAR with Content.

  9. [Important] HAR files might include personal or other sensitive data. You use a tool like Cloudflare's HAR sanitizer (https://har-sanitizer.pages.dev/) to remove any personal information before sharing.

Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to hearing from you.``

As always with OpenAI, it's the user's fault and never theirs. Apparently, they don't care about image generation bugs from a browser.
It's really a shame that the OpenAI team is taking this big issue lightly, especially since we're not the only ones in this situation.

I see several disconnects of misunderstanding and misinformation...

  1. OpenAI doesn't understand that when they say "Community Forum" that Discord members don't know what they're talking about.
  2. Discord members don't know that there is an actual official "Community Forum" ... and this is not it.
  3. The "Community Forum" that they keep referring people to is a Developer forum. There are no official categories there for ChatGPT discussion.
#

Sweeping generalized statements like "they don't care" are not productive. They do care. Individuals in Support just "don't know". As product users let's help them to understand what's happening so they can fix it. I'll see if I can do something - and remember, I'm just another community member like you folks, just volunteering to help.
( Some of you don't understand that message or the process. Sit back and learn. )

#

For now, note what @short roost said 👀 !

I have narrowed down the source of error. When I request an image on ChatGPT on webplatform, I get malformed images. If I use desktop app (Windows), I do not get malformed.

That's valuable information for Support that they do not have.

#

Your next move:

  1. Start a new chat session, not an existing one.
  2. Try a prompt in the browser that you know returns a distorted image.
  3. Copy/paste that prompt into the desktop app in a new chat.
  4. Confirm here if it's better, or if it's equally distorted.
  5. If you verified a difference (not just a different image but distortion!) respond to your open support request with OpenAI : Provide the exact prompt and tell them to try it in the browser and the desktop app that you are using. (Tell them Mac/Windows and the version!)
#

There's another factor to consider. There might be something in memory or context that's affecting the results. This is why I say "start a new chat". But that doesn't account for cross-chat memory. A much better test is to do the above testing with memory temporarily disabled.

#

If you want to be productive, you'll help to give OpenAI a report they can actually use. Complaining in a forum accomplishes nothing. Good luck to all of us.

short roost
#

I have done that. I provided them the HAR file. However, I have to note that, at least for me, the error has passed.

#

Nope. I have narrowed it down further. It still occurs on web site. I used Chrome (latest) on iPad. This might be time dependant. When I did this yesterday morning on my computer (Windows, latest Chrome), I did get great images.

#

I do not have the memory function on.

Keep goin. Thanks! Maybe someone else will contribute.

Here's something you can try if you have not tried already. When logged in via the web, go to Settings > Security > Logout All Devices. Then delete cookies and associated cache. Give it an hour and then try again. If it still persists, then repeat the process and give about 8-12 hours.

I've had some off and on issues with the web experience falling back to using an older version of the image model and this seems to correct it. It may not be the same issue for you all, but it's worth trying.

And yes symptom-wise, my app (iOS) would generate images at the correct quality level when on the web it wouldn't.

slate fiber
#

It's a clear communication issue, indeed. OpenAI seems to have terminology that causes confusion, especially by not distinguishing between forums for developers and those dedicated to the ChatGPT user community.

It would be helpful to clarify this in official messages to avoid Discord members (and others on different platforms) feeling lost. Perhaps better separation of dedicated spaces, with clearer indications, could help better direct people and reduce this confusion. It would also allow the teams to better address the issues, instead of redirecting users to an AI that always responds with empty answers but does nothing.

#

GPT-5 hasn't fixed the image distortion issues for both free and paid accounts. This bug has been ongoing for two weeks now.

I'm experiencing this as well, Sora was bad enough, now this? Makes me want to cancel the subscription.

slate fiber
#

I completely understand your frustration. Sora was already a big issue, and now this? It's definitely disappointing when these problems keep piling up. I can see why you'd be considering canceling the subscription. It feels like there's no progress in fixing these bugs, and it's really discouraging when you're paying for a service that doesn't meet expectations.

#

The problem is still there with the images.

Sora generates high quality images. App and desktop also work. It is the web UI. Also, I have noticed that web UI based gpt behavior is purely idiotic. Like they are directing us to use apps.

Any updates so far?

slate fiber
#

I feel like the image distortion bug hasn't been fixed despite the arrival of GPT-5. The generated images still look like those from GPT-4. In the end, nothing has changed. At least, for me

#

I tried using Sora, but it is restricted, especially when it comes to manga or manhwa style. It tends to make realistic-style images with the wrong colors, and I don't like that. Sora is ideal for realistic photo montages, but not for manga and manhwa.

#

I miss the old GPT, at least before all these updates and GPT-5. The images were perfect.

#

😭

Have you tried app-side?

slate fiber
# short roost Have you tried app-side?

I tried with the app, but the problem still persists on my end. Is it because I have a free account? Maybe now they do it on purpose to force people to pay. But with Sora, it works fine; the images are generated with good quality at first, but after that, the image quality starts to degrade.

#

Good news today!
FINALLY! No more image distortion coming from ChatGPT.
I wrote the prompt, and the image was perfect, just like it used to generate before that big issue.

#

A problem that still lasted for 2 months for me! And despite all the solutions that were provided.

slate fiber
#

Unfortunately, the distorted images by ChatGPT have started again.
I don't understand, the bug had been fixed, but it's back.
The return to normal only lasted 3 days.
ChatGPT really disappoints me.
An AI that can't create a simple manga image, forget it, it's not AI, it's an intelligence that's incapable.
