Hi @lone cosmos. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base.

ChatGPT does not automatically forget very old conversations as long as you keep them in your chat history—chats are saved to your account until you manually delete them. If you delete a chat, it is permanently removed from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days, unless legal or security exceptions apply. Archived chats are also retained under your standard retention settings and are not deleted unless you take action to remove them. Temporary Chats, however, are deleted automatically within 30 days, even without manual deletion Chat and file retention policies in ChatGPT.

However, when it comes to ChatGPT’s memory features:

  • Reference chat history: ChatGPT can use information from your past chats to make future conversations more helpful, but it does not remember every detail from past chats. The information it references can change over time as ChatGPT updates what’s most helpful to remember. If you want ChatGPT to always remember something, you should use the “saved memories” feature Memory FAQ.
  • Saved memories: These are stored separately from your chat history and persist until you delete them, regardless of how old the original conversation is Memory FAQ.

In summary: ChatGPT does not automatically forget old conversations unless you delete them, but it may not reference every detail from older chats unless you have explicitly saved those details as memories.
