I found a temporary fix to that bug.

You just need to "Renegenerate Response" your previous original message. Sadly, you could NOT "Edit Message" that previous original message.

It would not save your edit message early chat memory.

However you couldn't regenerate response to that previous message you regenerate, as you need to renegenerate response again to the another previous original message. It's only a one time use.

My "tips" is if you want to continue the message is make a checkpoint. E.g., 'Pause'.

I had the same issue as well, and my way to edit the message properly is switch to the website and edit that message and then switch back to the app and it will work and it's kind of an annoying process but that's the only troubleshooting way 🤷‍♂️

Or if you have another device with an old version (let's say 1.2025.182) it will still work as long as you don't enable auto-update on the second device

No unfortunately due to Google Play Store giving you a pop up that says "It didn't come from Google Play" but if you're lucky to have a second device that still has the old version. Then your're good to go

Sometimes you aren't happy with the flow of the conversation so you go back in chat to where you think you might want to change it from but the stacking of the edited message appearing as a new message is confusing even for chatgpt cause now the AI has two different contexts in the same chat.

Something hilarious did happen though, usually when you join beta teams on play store there are two versions of the apps. The stable one and the beta one. Once you join the beta tester team usually google play store shows you an update button to download the beta version but chatgpt never showed any upon joining beta, which concludes that the stable android version latest is the same as beta version of the app.

Both app versions are the same lol, screenshot taken on two different phones. One phone is running Android 11 and the other is running Android 13

They might have just pushed out the beta version on the stable branch as well. 💀 Left one is the stable one from gplay and the right is the beta one from gplay

When you contact the company through the Help Center, you'll certainly get a front-end bot that will have a few exchanges with you. It's looking for clear descriptions that it can forward to people - trying to separate valid claims from "dis chatbot iz broke, fix it plz". If you present a good report to the bot and then insist that it gets forwarded to to a human for processing, it'll do it. From that point I've had good exchanges with staff. The process takes a while. Patience is required.

Hmm, personally I'd respond to that with a cordial and professional tone. Support people aren't developers and they're just processing tickets.
Let them know that while they don't see a known issue yet, that this issue is well known with many votes in the OpenAI Discord server, and in the ChatGPT sub-Reddit.
Ask them to ensure that if someone else reports the issue that the reports will be linked.

FYI, they don't go to other sites. They don't come here or hang out in Reddit. So your note to them must be clear, and with instructions to reproduce the problem. I think all of us can reproduce the problem. I or someone else here might have detailed that in this thread.

You've proven one point for folks here - you've actually made contact with a human (um, I believe). The next step is to be clear and friendly about the issue so that they can process it.

Hey chris currently you can bypass this by regenerating the response before the message you want to edit. It will reset the chat from the regenerated message and then you can send the edited version.

Currently the people are working on trying to get this bug fixed from the consumer side

I emailed the support earlier today describing the problem and how many others on android are experiencing the same issue. I also sent them a screen recording of the problem occurring.

Then 20 minutes ago they sent an email back with a list of things to do to try and resolve the problem. Of course, none of them worked. However they did say that it was definitely unusual behaviour. I just sent them my phone and app specifications and such that they asked for. Probably won't lead to anything but fingers crossed 🤞

I use chatgpt for OCs (Original characters) and RPs (roleplays), So I usually copy the response I want to edit. Regenerate chatgpt's response just before that and then send the edited message back in.

There have been so many reports on multiple ways in the last few weeks and OpenAI still doesn't want to hear anything about it, according to support there are no "issues". That's pretty weird, so that's just why I think a bit it is a feature.

And the app's last update a few days ago didn't fix anything at all; instead, it made things worse. And the bug was already known by then.

It will probably not be fixed until sometime after the release of GPT-5, if at all. This could be long weeks that are coming now.

I stopped using it for like a week and started using other apps like deepseek. However I decided to just keep using ChatGPT as of a few days ago.

All I do now is keep a chrome tab open on my phone with the Web version of GPT open and use that to edit messages. It's a bit of a hassle but not too much. It's an easy temporary fix for it issue whilst we're stuck with it.

It's not a bug, I'm quite sure. It's because of GPT-5 is coming so that we can see how "much better it is" and "how bad the rest is compared to it". Doesn't make much sense, why would they intentionally implement a bug? To avoid the issue for now, knowing there is a fix rolling out, just don't use the same pattern of opening and editing an existing chat.

Most people never encounter this specific issue because they haven't settled into that specific pattern.

If you open and edit chats to avoid clutter, for now, just create new chats and then delete them. Or use temporary chats for simple things.

I first went on web, changed it to gpt 4o on there. Opened the same chat on app and it had the option. Now the option is also available even when opening a new chat. No way to set it on the app but I think if you do so on web it should automatically switch on the app as well

Listen I can tell the difference is huge now with 4o between that and GPT-5, feels more like talking to a bot with a personality than an automatic polite customer service dry texting as hell chatbot. With plus you have the ability to send more files per day, more of a limit on 4o... look it's up to you and how badly you really miss 4o. You can always try one month, see how much you use it and then evaluate
