I hoped, that the new chat history feature help one to expand the chat context by saving important content in a chat session. But I don't want to save it global like the memory function since not everything, which is important for a chat session is important everywhere.
If it like the memory function, but without the control over the content, the feature will be useless for me.

Hi @violet spruce. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base. :wave:

The “Reference chat history” feature in ChatGPT allows the model to reference your past conversations to recall useful information and make future chats more personalized and relevant. When this setting is enabled, ChatGPT may use relevant details from your previous chats to inform its responses in new conversations. However, it does not retain every detail from past chats—only what it determines is most helpful. This is different from the “saved memories” feature, which stores information you explicitly want ChatGPT to remember and use globally across all chats until you delete it.

If you want ChatGPT to always remember something, you should use the saved memories feature. For information that is only relevant within a specific chat session, the chat history feature may not provide the granular, session-specific control you’re looking for. Chat history is designed to help with personalization across sessions, not to expand the context window within a single session or to allow you to manually select which content is referenced. If you delete or archive a conversation, ChatGPT will no longer reference it, unless you’ve already saved a memory from that chat. For temporary, session-specific context, you may need to rely on the ongoing chat session itself, as chat history is not intended for fine-grained, per-session context management What is Memory? How does “Reference chat history” work?.

#

In summary:

  • Chat history helps ChatGPT recall useful information from past conversations for personalization, but you don’t have direct control over which details are referenced.
  • Saved memories are global and persistent until deleted, and you control what is stored.
  • For session-specific context expansion, chat history does not provide manual, session-only memory.

If you need more granular control, you may want to use saved memories for global information and rely on the active chat session for temporary, session-specific details.

@warped dragon
Isn't the chat history like a saved memories without control over the content?

Let me check the knowledge base for you again. One moment! :books:

The chat history feature is similar to saved memories in that both can be used by ChatGPT to inform its responses, but there are important differences:

  • Saved memories are details you explicitly ask ChatGPT to remember, and you have full control: you can add, review, and delete them at any time. These are always considered in future responses unless you delete them How does “Reference saved memories” work?.
  • Chat history allows ChatGPT to reference information from your past chats to make conversations more helpful, but you do not have granular control over which details are remembered or referenced. ChatGPT decides what information from past chats is useful and may update or forget details over time. If you want something to always be remembered, you should use saved memories instead How does “Reference chat history” work? How Memory works.

So, your understanding is correct: chat history is like a less controllable version of saved memories. You cannot directly manage or curate the content that chat history references, whereas you have explicit control over saved memories.

Hallo. Is chat history connected with chats outside one of projects? Or is it only aimed to specific projects if opened?
