Bug Report: Cannot upload or delete files that are in projects
`Steps to Reproduce`

Try uploading or deleting files that are in projects.

`Expected Result`

Should be able to upload or delete files that are in projects

`Actual Result`

I get the spinning wheel of death and the files are not uploaded or deleted

Android phone, Google Chrome browser and Safari browser

I see what happened. Plus user Projects used to be limited to 20 files. It was reduced to 10 for some reason. Any projects with more than 10 are now broken. You can't rename them, you can't delete files. You can add new chats, but that's it.

The help article on the website still says up to 20 for Plus users, 40 for Pro, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users.

The orange error in the screenshot came up when I tried to rename the project.

This has left me in a bad spot, as I have 17 files (14 essential) I need uploaded at once for cross referencing between chats on different parts of the project. I could eliminate 3 of those, but I can't even delete from my project.

New projects now won't let you upload more than 10. It will try, but anything beyond the 10th one gets stuck and never uploads.

Same here, trying to delete and upload an updated project file. I am not getting any errors, just eternal spinner when I have selected to delete an existing file trying to upload the latest version of it. I am getting the same results on the desktop app on my windows system and in the chatgpt.com web app on all browsers.

Same here. I had 14 files in my project, but for the last couple days, every time I try to change the Project Instructions, I get error: "Cannot upload more than 10 files." I deleted all the files and now I can’t upload more than 10, even though the official limit is 20. Any new files just get stuck with an endless spinner and never finish uploading.

Heard back. Cookie cutter response.

They basically acknowledged that I'm having an issue, but ignored that it's more than just me and sent me a list of recommended practices for uploading files like uploading one at a time, retry after a pause as it could be server delays, checking server status, clearing cache, etc.

Basically, "we're not saying it's us, we're saying it might be you." Despite evidence showing otherwise.

I'm pushing back hard.

I'm starting to lose patience with the support person I have. They gave me generic instructions to clear my cache and try a different browser and stuff like that like I'm the only one having this issue despite providing evidence that there are lots of people having this problem.

They've asked for and I have uploaded a screen capture showing the issue of locked up old projects and new projects both having issues with the file limit.

I am using the windows desktop application and it's the same thing with me. So it's not a browser issue or anything like that as I have also tried on 3 different browsers and my iPhone app as well and can not remove any of my current project files to update with new versions of those files.

Having the same issue as this. I was able to upload to another project and when I made a new project, it started happening in the new project within 24 hours.

Because I am having a completely different conversation with them where it's not intended and we should have access to 20 files.

I hope so. I know I've been pushing on it hard with their support and shoving every mention of it on Discord as well as screen shots and video capture in front of them to get past the typical "have you tried this?" stuff. I work in IT support, so I know exactly how to present stuff to get attention. It’s good to finally see it officially acknowledged on the status page.

Yea, still having issues, just trying to remove some old files from a project. I wanted to update the files with some newer version. I have 15 files in this project and have been working on this project for weeks now and never had a problem removing and replacing files in the project up until Wednesday morning. I think I even updated files last weekend without issue.

Same, still having an issue. I’m having to combine files which is causing the ai to get confused.

This is really annoying, we are paying for 20. They need to look into this.

It says that it supports 40 files instead of the 20. So I dont understand why it crashes at 10! They posted this on their site in June

Signed up for plus today in hopes to upload 20 files. Took me a while to realize that this is a much larger issue and now I’m out of uploads.

Yep, came here to report this issue as well. I do get an error. And after that error, I can't do anything anymore... I have to revert to my phone to even just chat with chatgpt. Log out log in works to get the chat back going, but when I upload a file, it crashes again

Ok, I've had confirmation now too. Plus users have been reduced from 20 to 10 files.

Apparently this change has broken some stuff and they are working on a fix.

Yeah, it really sucks and is kind of a kick in the face from OpenAI. I mean, is it really that difficult or costly to keep plus users on 20 files? Especially when the next option up is 10 times the cost. Anyway, they're working to fix the projects they broke, but it looks like we're not getting 20 files back again.

For anyone frustrated by the reduced project document limit (from 20 to 10), a small workaround: I’ve been combining related files into a single text doc when it makes sense — like grouping small, related code files or notes. It’s not ideal, but it helps stretch the limit a bit without losing project structure.

Apparently, for some reason this also disallows you to edit instructions on your projects too. I didn’t see anyone mentioned that, unless I missed it

Confirmed it is back up to 20 for now and my projects are working as they should.

I asked for clarification on the permanence of Plus users being back at 20 is.
