Hi @marble reef. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base.
There are several reasons why your previous chats might have disappeared from the ChatGPT app:
-
Chats were deleted manually: If you or someone with access to your account deleted the conversations, they are immediately removed from your chat history and cannot be recovered. Deleted chats are also scheduled for permanent deletion from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days, unless required for legal or security reasons. Once deleted, they are not retrievable through the app or support channels How to delete and archive chats in ChatGPT.
-
Chat history was disabled: If you have disabled chat history, new conversations will not appear in your history and cannot be recovered. When chat history is disabled, OpenAI retains new conversations for 30 days only for abuse monitoring, after which they are permanently deleted If I disable history, what happens when the conversation closes?.
-
Temporary Chat mode was used: If you used Temporary Chat mode (available in some app versions), those chats do not appear in your history and are not used to improve models. Temporary chats are automatically deleted from OpenAI systems within 30 days Temporary Chats on the ChatGPT macOS app.
-
Logged out or using a different account: If you are logged out or using a different account, your previous chats will not be visible. Chat history syncs across devices only when you are signed in to the same account How can I view my conversation history in the iOS app?.
- App or device issues: In rare cases, app updates, reinstallations, or device issues could affect the visibility of your chat history.
If none of these situations apply, and your chats are still missing, it may be helpful to check your account status or contact OpenAI support for further assistance.
