DALL·E consistently misinterprets urban streets, making major structural errors in roadways and sidewalks. This issue persists regardless of how detailed the prompt is and includes the following problems:
Incorrect street layout:
Instead of the standard "sidewalk – roadway – sidewalk" scheme, the model often generates a sidewalk in the middle of the roadway.
Sometimes, streets are split into multiple alternating sections of sidewalks and roadways, which does not match real urban landscapes.
Errors with pedestrian zones and bollards:
Bollards, which should be at the boundary between the sidewalk and the roadway, often appear in the middle of the road, blocking traffic.
Pedestrian crossings (if present) may be placed randomly or missing entirely.
Distortions in characters and their placement:
Characters that should be on sidewalks sometimes end up on the roadway, which is illogical and unnatural.
In some cases, they appear on top of barriers or between traffic bollards, breaking the scene’s physics.
Problem with interpreting restrictions:
Even though the prompt does not use negative phrasing (such as "NOT on the road"), the model still misinterprets the scene.
Providing detailed object placement does not help and sometimes even worsens the issue.
Allowing the use of negative phrasing (e.g., "No bollards across the road," "No sidewalks in the middle of the street") might help exclude unwanted elements from the image and prevent such mistakes, but this is unclear.
