The evolution of macro imagery with GPT 5.5

When we last explored macro imagery in Curator’s Corner, I demonstrated one of my older macro concepts: a deer inside a dew droplet.

Image 1 (on the left) was created in January 2025. Image 2 was recreated recently in GPT-5.5 using the same core prompt (which can be found earlier in this thread). The comparison revealed something fascinating about how the newer rendering system interprets imagery.

The original image leaned into what I’d call “surreal optical poetry.” The droplet behaved more like polished crystal than water, lighting was dramatic and symbolic, and the overall composition felt dreamlike and iconic, almost like a gallery print.

The newer GPT-5.5 version pushed much harder toward physical realism and authentic macro photography. Leaf textures, moisture behavior, depth-of-field transitions, and optical refraction all became more naturalistic and scientifically believable. Instead of “a fantasy world inside a crystal,” it resembled “a real macro photograph capturing an impossible event.”

To regain some of the emotional atmosphere of the original while keeping the improved realism, I refined the prompt, in this new chat, with stronger emphasis on cinematic bokeh, optical glass behavior, and macro lens physics. That resulted in Image 3, which for me combined the best qualities of both approaches: the emotional immediacy of the first image with the enhanced realism and texture fidelity of the newer rendering system.
