Bug Report: Scrolling Issue on iOS Safari – Chat Window Does Not Scroll Properly
`Steps to Reproduce`

Open ChatGPT in Safari on iOS (device: iPad Air 2 running iOS 15.8.3).
Open a chat with text long enough to require scrolling.
Attempt to scroll within the chat window.

`Expected Result`

The text within the chat window should scroll smoothly, allowing users to read all the content.

`Actual Result`

Instead of scrolling the text, the entire page is dragged. This prevents navigation within the chat, making it impossible to read beyond the visible portion of the screen.

`Environment`

Platform: iPad Air 2 OS: iOS 15.8.3 Browser: Safari App Installation: Not possible due to iPad's inability to upgrade to a compatible iOS version.

Dear OpenAI Team,

I’ve been experiencing a persistent issue with ChatGPT on iOS Safari for several months now, which has rendered the platform nearly unusable on this device. The problem occurs when I try to scroll through text in the chat window: instead of scrolling the text itself, the entire page gets dragged. This makes it impossible to navigate conversations and read messages beyond the visible portion of the screen.

This issue wasn’t present a few months ago, so I believe it may have been introduced in a recent update. I have not made any changes to my device or browser settings, which suggests the problem is likely related to adjustments on the platform’s side.

Here are a few additional details about the issue:

Device: iPad air 2 running iOS 15.8.3
Browser: Safari
Behavior: Attempting to scroll within the chat window moves the entire page instead of scrolling the text content.
I’ve attempted various troubleshooting steps, such as clearing the browser cache, disabling extensions, and restarting the device, but none have resolved the problem. I would greatly appreciate it if this could be investigated and addressed in a future update.

I also can not install the App because my iPad can not be updated to the IOS Version i need to install the app, so I'm literally dependent on the Web version.

Safari on iOS is a common browser choice for many users, and ensuring compatibility would enhance the usability of ChatGPT for a significant portion of your user base. If there are any workarounds or solutions I could try in the meantime, I would be happy to implement them.

Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to any updates or fixes that can resolve this issue.

Best regards

Ramanuta

I've seen weird scrolling behavior in browser, Windows app, and Android. I just haven't been able to nail a repo case to justify reporting. I think this is related to how the UI processes events for each character.

I dont know what the problem is either, but i know it was not like this a few months ago.

It's definitely more pronounced in a lengthy canvas document, select at the top, then drag down, or maybe select down and drag up. If you use the keyboard to shift-arrow around it's better, but not perfect.

#

Now that this is here, I'll try to post a repro whenever I see this again ... have seen it a lot today and just ignored it, which is why I'm keenly interested in this report.

yea, i hope this gets picked up by the devs and looked at, its very annoying not being able to use this on the go.

This is still not fixed, please fix.

This is still a problem, please fix.

Have patience .... especially for a problem that can't be reproduced. You've reported the problem, now just wait for a product change. That's the process here.

well, i dont want this to just get burried beneath all the other ones getting reported here and no one even looking at it, so i force it back to the top by writing in it every day. Because this is still a problem, and has been for months at this point, like, i just want this to be fixed already and be able to use ChatGPT on my ipad again.

As someone who has been posting and processing requests for many decades, I'll tell you from experience that bumping like this absolutely does not help, and can easily get you flagged as an annoyance. That results in you not being able to post to whatever tracker you're posting to. That's unfortunate because then people won't benefit from your good comments.

#

Every company is different but the change process goes something like this:

  • you post your request
  • some time goes by to see if it's just a one-off issue or a trend that others recognize
  • we wait for someone at the company to recognize and log the issue,
  • we wait for managers to prioritize,
  • we wait for someone to be assigned with allowance for developer workload,
  • there is internal QA
  • changes may get published for public beta
  • then finally a change is rolled out to production
There could be many more steps.
The process may be affected as other related details are recognized, like "is this a part of a larger problem?" or "what else is affected if we change this code?"
#

So again, I suggest you do as everyone else does, and simply wait. Move on. Find out what avoids the problem, post that here, and use that technique.
Or use another device.

#

Consider that we don't see a mass of people complaining about this. Something is different here that makes this issue affect very few people, and that lowers the priority. Until more people come here independently to complain about this issue, it won't get recognized or processed as above.

#

Your single report will not get attention no matter how many times you bump it. And bumping more than a few times will almost certainly get you bumped by moderators.

#

Good luck.

That’s really disappointing to hear. It’s frustrating how these kinds of specific and rare issues often take ages to get fixed, and the whole process feels so slow and inefficient. I guess the best thing I can do now is upgrade to a new iPad when I can, so I can test it on the latest iOS version. At least that way, I’ll also be able to see if the issue persists in the ChatGPT app itself once I can finally install it. Here’s hoping the app works better than the web version in this case!

You don't need to buy a new device. 🤓 Just wait. Have patience. Use a different UI. Check your description and see if you can add any clarification. Try to find a reproducible set of steps - and then ask others to try it. Try to get a video of it. Search the channels here for related keywords to see if anyone else reported a similar issue. Chill out, enjoy it as it is, and if you've done these other things then the issue will be fixed sooner and this will all fade away. 🤗
