Hi @forest swallow. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base.
Hmm, I don't know enough to give you a confident answer yet. However, you might find more information in the OpenAI Help Center (https://help.openai.com/).
Note: you can ask me a follow up question by @ mentioning me again :speech_balloon:
@forest swallow Kapa.ai is still learning and improving, please let me know how I did by reacting below.
@sturdy gyro See, I want to post some raw chinese novel text, and want chat gpt to translate it for me, but it keeps forgetting the things I mentioned it before after some chapters are translated
Let me check the knowledge base for you again. One moment! :books:
To address the issue of ChatGPT forgetting previous context during long interactions, you can consider using the memory feature, which allows ChatGPT to remember details between chats. However, this feature is not yet available for all users and regions. Here are some strategies you can use based on the available features:
-
Memory Feature: If you have access to the memory feature, you can enable it to help ChatGPT remember details across sessions. You can manage this feature in the settings under the Personalization section. You can also instruct ChatGPT to remember specific details by saying something like, "Remember that I am translating a Chinese novel."
-
Custom Instructions: You can use custom instructions to guide ChatGPT on how to respond. This feature allows you to set preferences that will steer future conversations. You can enable this feature by going to 'Profile & Settings', selecting 'Beta features', and toggling on 'Custom instructions'. However, note that this feature might not be available in all regions.
-
Summarization: For long texts, consider summarizing previous parts of the conversation or using a summarization tool to keep the context manageable within the model's context window.
-
Temporary Chat: If you want to start a new session without previous context, you can use the Temporary Chat feature, which starts with a blank slate. This might not solve the forgetting issue but can be useful for isolated tasks.
For more detailed information on these features, you can refer to the following resources:
- Memory FAQ (https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8590148-memory-faq)
- Custom Instructions (https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8096356-custom-instructions-for-chatgpt)
- Temporary Chat FAQ (https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8914046-temporary-chat-faq)
If these options are not available to you, you might need to manually remind ChatGPT of the context as you continue your translation work.

i am using a Custom GPT, so Memory can't be accessed, and Custom Instructions too can't be accessed there

If you're using a Custom GPT and don't have access to the memory or custom instructions features, you can try the following strategies to manage context and improve the translation process:
-
Piecewise Translation: Break down the novel into smaller sections or chapters and translate each piece separately. After translating a section, summarize it and keep a record of these summaries. This way, you can refer back to the summaries to maintain context as you proceed with the translation.
-
Running Summary: As you translate each section, create a running summary that captures key details and context. You can include this summary in your prompts to help maintain continuity across translations.
-
External Notes: Keep a separate document or notes where you jot down important details, character names, and plot points. Refer to these notes as needed to remind yourself and ChatGPT of the context.
-
Manual Context Management: Before starting a new translation session, manually provide a brief summary of the previous sections to ChatGPT. This can help re-establish context for the current translation task.
