**Submissions for the Technique Tuesday Emoji Design contest are now closed. A few emojis that were submitted will be selected by staff as official serverwide emojis! Winning emojis will complement the existing set by adding clear, upbeat, and universally recognizable icons. Submissions are now closed. Only submissions made during the regular Technique Tuesday Daily Theme period (November 26–27) are eligible for this contest. ** Effective emoji design prioritizes clarity, universality, and simplicity. An emoji must visually convey a single idea quickly and unambiguously, even at small sizes. Key factors include:

  • Recognizable shapes with minimal detail
  • Bold, contrasting colors for cross-device visibility
  • Culturally neutral imagery for broad accessibility
  • Universal symbols that enable intuitive global communication

Backgrounds should provide sufficient contrast with the emoji's elements while maintaining versatility. Options include transparent backgrounds or muted, solid colors that ensure legibility across platforms.

This sample was made by discussing emoji design principles with ChatGPT then asking for:

Storytelling Emojis: While emojis typically represent a range of emotions or objects, I wanted to create a set of emojis that allow users to craft narratives with visual shorthand. I discussed this idea with ChatGPT, which took my ideas and came up with character descriptions, locations, and key objects. Selecting a particular art style gives coherence to the emoji set. Those that emphasize clean lines and simplified shapes, like minimalism and low-poly, work the best.

Prompt 1: “A set of storytelling emojis inspired by a classic folktale in a minimalist style. Include the following elements: a young woman in a humble outfit with simple, clean lines and a soot mark; the same woman transformed into an elegant ball gown with a subtle glowing effect; a whimsical figure represented by a simple star-tipped wand and sparkles; a glowing, delicate shoe with minimalist detail; a magical carriage inspired by a pumpkin with clean, rounded shapes; a grand castle simplified to a few towers with glowing windows; and a clock showing almost midnight with clean lines and sparkles. The design should use bold, simplified shapes, soft pastel tones, and focus on clear, iconic representations suitable for emojis.”

Prompt 2: "A set of storytelling emojis inspired by the life of a five-year-old Amish farm girl, her family, and farm animals, designed in a low-poly art style. Include the following elements: a young Amish farm girl wearing a bonnet and a simple dress; her parents represented with traditional Amish attire and clean geometric shapes; a cow, a chicken, and a pig depicted in minimalist, low-poly forms; a barn with a traditional Amish aesthetic and simple geometric structure; a horse-drawn cart made of low-poly elements; and a sun represented with symmetrical polygons. The design should use light beige as the primary neutral tone, combined with bold, vibrant colors, emphasizing clean, angular facets and a modern, polygonal aesthetic suitable for emojis."

Mokuhanga (Woodblock Print) Emojis:
Mokuhanga is a rich and visually compelling style that can make your emoji set stand out with clean lines, flat areas of color, and distinct Japanese aesthetic. The bold contrasts and simple details typical of mokuhanga make designs scalable as well. To make mokuhanga emoji, focus on simplicity, contrast and subtle textures.

My cat emojis were created via Bing Image Creator with the base prompt: “A minimalist emoji-style illustration in the style of simplistic mokuhanga (Japanese woodblock print). It features a [jumping/happy/angry] cat in black with bold and clean lines, placed on a solid [mandarin orange/mint green/red] square background with black trim. The design captures the handcrafted texture and organic edges typical of traditional woodblock printing, set against a transparent background.”

Creating Emojis for Discord…my process
Emojis have been aptly described above. So, I decided to focus on 3 elements to create some emojis that I would like to see.

In trying to develop new emojis for the Discord server, I asked Chat gpt4o to give me 3 guiding principles, to start.

Universality of the Subject
• Choose themes, symbols, or expressions that are widely understood across cultures and languages.
• Avoid region-specific or overly niche references unless they're essential to your community's identity. Icons like smiling faces, food items, or universally recognizable objects (e.g., heart, star, thumbs up) are great examples.

Clarity and Simplicity
• Ensure the design is crisp and recognizable at small sizes. A good emoji should convey its meaning instantly, even on mobile devices.
• Use clean lines, bold shapes, and minimal details to maintain legibility.

Emotional and Functional Relevance
• Emojis should evoke feelings or serve specific purposes within conversations. Whether it’s humor, support, or a reaction, they should resonate with users.
• For Discord, think of versatile emojis that align with common reactions like laughter, approval, or confusion (e.g., "pog" face or shrug emoji).

I started with these 4 emojis that I thought were useful to have (some prompts reflect adjustments made to initial output). All but the global warming emoji were just simple line drawings. These were images 1-4:

Opportunity
A minimalist line drawing of an open door in black lines on a white background. The door has a broader opening to enhance clarity at small sizes, with no dots or unnecessary details, ensuring a clean and simple design. The focus remains on the outline of the open door, suitable for emoji design.

Wishing someone best of luck
A minimalist line drawing of crossed fingers on the same hand in black lines on a white background. The design is simple and clean, focusing entirely on the hand gesture, ensuring clarity and universality for small-scale use, such as in an emoji format. No additional elements or embellishments.

Inspirational
A minimalist line drawing of a glowing light bulb, symbolizing inspiration, with clean black lines on a white background. The design is simple and universal, focusing on the bulb with light rays radiating outward to suggest an idea or inspiration. No additional elements or embellishments, suitable for small-scale emoji use.

Global Warming
A small, detailed globe emoji with heat radiating outward, symbolizing global warming. The globe shows simple, recognizable continents filled with clean green and blue colors for land and water. Radiating heat is represented by bold and filled wavy red and orange lines around the globe, keeping the design compact and visually clear for emoji use, with no unnecessary elements.

One of the fundamental applications of emojis is to quickly convey human emotions in visual form. Since humans have such a diverse range of emotions, these simple pictures help to efficiently capture a feeling without the necessity of writing or describing it. DALL-E can be a useful tool for making these since it tends to recognize and effectively apply traditional emoji aesthetics with style cues like "simple" and/or " modern" .

Prompt: "A neat digital arrangement of several modern simple emojis of yellow faces arranged on a white background, depicting the gamut of human emotions."
