Tie-dye as an art style involves folding, twisting, or crumpling fabric and binding it with string or rubber bands before applying dye to create vibrant, often symmetrical patterns. The dye resists certain areas based on how the fabric is tied, resulting in distinctive designs such as spirals, stripes, and mandalas.

Tie-dye has roots in traditional dyeing techniques from various cultures, such as bandhani in India, shibori in Japan, and other methods across Africa and South America. In modern times, it became particularly associated with the counterculture movements of the 1960s and 70s.

ChatGPT understands the concept of tie-dye well. To get the effect clearly, don’t make your prompt too complicated, as the strength of any cue goes down as the complexity goes up. This sample was made by discussing tie-dye products to set the context, then asking for a specific product photo:

The hoodie is worn by a smiling person wearing retro-style sunglasses, exuding a playful and nostalgic vibe. The background is softly blurred to keep the focus on the hoodie and its vivid colors. The cheerful and sunny atmosphere highlights the high-quality tie-dye design, perfect for showcasing the product in an advertisement.

Tie-dyed washi paper (絞り染め和紙, shiborizome washi) is a form of Japanese paper art that incorporates the ancient art of shibori (tie-dyeing) into the creation of washi paper. This technique results in beautifully patterned paper that combines the traditional craftsmanship of washi with the vibrant, organic aesthetics of tie-dye. Tie-dyed washi is popular in origami, collage, bookbinding and cardmaking, as its unique patterns and slightly crinkled texture add a lot of character to the artwork.

Greeting card prompt: “A handcrafted greeting card made from tie-dyed washi paper. The design features soft, organic tie-dye patterns in vibrant yet subtle shades of gold, green, and purple, suggesting an abstract Japanese garden. The washi paper's natural texture adds depth and elegance to the card, giving it a delicate and artistic appearance. The overall style blends traditional Japanese craftsmanship with a modern aesthetic, making it suitable for various occasions.” (DALL-E 3 via ChatGPT 4o)

Classic Spiral Tie-Dye
How it Works: Pinch the center of the fabric and twist it into a spiral. Secure it with rubber bands in pie-like sections.
Effect: A vibrant, radiating spiral pattern.
Tips: Use complementary colors for bold effects or analogous colors for a harmonious look.

#

Reverse Tie-Dye
How it Works: Start with dark-colored fabric (e.g., black or navy) and use bleach to remove color in selected areas.
Effect: Creates a striking contrast, often with reddish or orange tones emerging from the bleaching process.
Tips: Use stencils or brushes for more control, and neutralize bleach with water and vinegar to halt the process.

Sunburst (Bullseye) Tie-Dye
How it Works: Pinch small sections of the fabric and tie rubber bands tightly around each to create circles or “sunbursts.”
Effect: Circular patterns resembling radiating sunbursts or bullseyes.
Tips: Experiment with the placement and size of the sections for a more dynamic design.

Tie-Dye Inspired Glass Art - Tie-dye patterns somehow reminded me of hand-blown glass, made with cane and murrine technique. So I worked with ChatGPT 4o to incorporate tie-dye inspired patterns into glass art. Here area some of my favorite results:

Bowl prompt: "A hand-blown glass bowl featuring a vibrant and energetic tie-dye-inspired pattern, crafted using cane and murrine glassblowing techniques. The design is reminiscent of the intricate and colorful works of David Patchen, with patterns such as spirals, sunbursts, stripes, and mandalas. The glass is luminous, semi-translucent, and reflective, capturing light to highlight the depth and detail of the pattern. The bowl has a glossy surface, showcasing its artistic craftsmanship and creating a luxurious, intricate, and colorful appearance."

LOVE prompt: "A visually striking typographic design made of hand-blown glass using cane and murrine techniques, featuring bold, sans-serif letters spelling out 'LOVE,' with vibrant tie-dye patterns. The tie-dye motif includes intense and vibrant spirals and sunbursts in bright colors such as red, blue, yellow, green, and pink. The typography is set against a clean white background for maximum contrast, creating an eye-catching and playful yet modern look. The glass pieces have flat and smooth surfaces, rounded edges, and the tie-dye patterns are seamlessly integrated on the glossy, glassy surface of the letters, radiating energy and creativity with a vivid and striking color palette."

Peacock prompt: "Professional photography, a hand-blown glass sculpture of a peacock, vibrant and energetic tie-dye inspired pattern, created using the cane and murrain techniques. Combination of spirals, sunburst, stripes and mandalas in an aesthetically pleasing composition. The glass should be luminous and milky-opaque, to highlight the depth and intricacy of the pattern. The surface should be smooth with a glossy finish, showcasing sophisticated craftsmanship." (Bing Image Creator)

Tie-dye: altering the traditional color palette to suit a theme, or mood

I used a similar style for comparison, in this case a product photo of a tie-dye T-shirt on the same background, which GPT4 maintained through the process. I started off with the traditional tie-dye coloring. I then adapted the palette to 2 additional color palette themes, representing autumn and a coastal ambience. I included all 3, with prompts to show the changes. The only part of the prompt that changed was the color palette itself.

(Traditional: first image)
A vibrant product photo showcasing a traditional tie-dye T-shirt, displayed on a wooden background. The T-shirt features a classic tie-dye color palette of bright rainbow hues, including red, yellow, green, blue, and purple, with the iconic spiral pattern. The colors are vivid and slightly blended at the edges, creating a harmonious yet dynamic effect. The shirt is neatly folded, emphasizing its texture and design, and the lighting highlights the vividness of the colors, making it visually appealing.

(Autumn-themed palette)
…The T-shirt features a warm, earthy tie-dye color palette with tones of burnt orange, deep red, olive green, and mustard yellow, arranged in a spiral pattern. The colors are rich and blend smoothly, giving the design a cozy and autumnal appearance…

(Coastal-themed palette)
…The T-shirt features a cool, ocean-inspired tie-dye color palette with shades of aqua blue, teal, seafoam green, and white, arranged in a spiral pattern. The colors are fresh and blend smoothly, giving the design a serene and coastal appearance…
