Hello all!

I have somewhat of a deep dive question that i got from a member of my community regarding ChatGPT hosting, we can concretely know that OpenAI uses azure servers hosted inside Canada, but what i cant find any information on is if you are inside Canada and use ChatGPT or Apis etc, does it go to a Canadian hosted server for sure? or is it as likely to go to any random hosted server inside the architecture?

I am reading through the terms of use, privacy policy and security and privacy links as we speak.

I'll copy paste the question just for clarity:

"Hi all. I get this question often from my clients and coworkers. In Canada (maybe other countries), many companies are not allowed to use software if their data doesn’t reside on Canadian Servers.

I believe ChatGPT’s is hosted on Microsoft Azure, and I believe Microsoft has data centres located in Toronto/Quebec (since 2016).

Now if you are using a Paid or Teams account and creating “custom GPTs” - how can we be sure that data we are “uploading” into knowledge is going to be housed on a Canadian Server (or a server of the country the user is in).

Two use cases:

#1 I have a client who wants to upload their Union Collective Agreement and ask questions of it? Where is this data stored and for how long?

#2 If using a Teams version (or Plus) and you have the training model turned off, memory turned off and you are not using instructions - we know ChatGPT can “hold the data” for 30 days (or at least that is what I read for security purposes) - is this data being held in Canadian servers?"

Hi @tall sierra. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base.

Hmm, I don't know enough to give you a confident answer yet. The knowledge sources provided do not contain specific information about the geographical location of the servers where OpenAI hosts its data or processes requests from its users.

However, I can share some information about OpenAI's data retention policies. For ChatGPT Enterprise, workspace admins control how long data is retained, and any deleted conversations are removed from OpenAI's systems within 30 days, unless legally required to retain them source (https://openai.com/enterprise-privacy/). For ChatGPT Team, each end user controls whether their conversations are retained, and any deleted or unsaved conversations are removed from OpenAI's systems within 30 days, unless legally required to retain them source (https://openai.com/enterprise-privacy/).

Regarding data export, shared conversations are included in ChatGPT data export source (https://help.openai.com/en/articles/7925741-chatgpt-shared-links-faq#h_05bc041319), but you cannot export your data on a Team workspace source (https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8801890-can-i-migrate-or-merge-my-chatgpt-free-or-plus-workspace-over-to-my-chatgpt-team-workspace#h_cb8cd76db0).

For more detailed information about OpenAI's data handling practices, you may want to refer to OpenAI's Privacy Policy (https://openai.com/policies/privacy-policy) source (https://help.openai.com/en/articles/7842364-how-chatgpt-and-our-language-models-are-developed#h_eebe9de326).
