How can I change the model that ChatGPT is using before I start a conversation on my phone or online?

Hi @torn haven. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base.

If you're on a paid ChatGPT plan (ChatGPT Plus, Team, or Enterprise), you have the ability to switch between different models in ChatGPT depending on your plan and your needs. This includes the default model, GPT-3.5, and the most capable model, GPT-4. However, please note that as of May 10th, 2023, the Legacy (GPT-3.5) model has been deprecated. Users can continue their existing conversations with this model, but new messages will use the default model.

Unfortunately, the option to switch models during a conversation is not currently available. The option only appears (sometimes) when the message cap is hit. If you need to switch models during a conversation, you might need to copy-paste the conversation, or relevant summaries, into a new chat, ask the model to familiarize itself with the topic and the conversation, and then proceed.

@tranquil oxide I'm using the free version of ChatGPT

Let me check the knowledge base for you. One moment! :books:

If you're using the free version of ChatGPT, you only have access to the GPT-3.5 model with an 8K context window. The ability to switch between different models, such as GPT-4, is only available to users on a paid ChatGPT plan (ChatGPT Plus, Team, or Enterprise).

If you wish to access more advanced models like GPT-4, you would need to upgrade to a paid plan. The GPT-4 model, for instance, is available to both ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers and features a 32K context window, offering advanced capabilities suitable for a broad range of applications.

@tranquil oxide I don't want to reach my daily limit with GPT-4o so I want to use GPT-3.5 to start conversations. How can I do that?

I'm sorry for any confusion, but as per the information available, users on the Free tier of ChatGPT are defaulted to GPT-4o with a limit on the number of messages they can send using GPT-4o. When this limit is reached, Free tier users will be switched back to GPT-3.5. There is no direct way to start a conversation with GPT-3.5 without first reaching the limit on GPT-4o.

If you want to manage your usage to avoid hitting the daily limit, you might need to monitor your usage and adjust your interactions accordingly. However, there is no direct way to switch to GPT-3.5 at the start of a conversation on the Free tier.
