This is a collaborative post intended to help illustrate the amazing diversity of bird species around the world. Everyone is encouraged to add images of your favorite birds or species that catch your interest!

The title image (and many of my others here) was made using the prompt "Minimalist simple 1840s field natural history sketch in colored pencil and watercolor on yellowed rough paper. The drawing shows a parade of many birds including a flamingo, penguin, pelican, toucan, cassowary, goose, starling, stork, eagle, pheasant, tanager, and more, all crowded together in a movie-style poster. Wide white space."

The endangered kākāpō is the only flightless parrot.

#

The New Zealand kākā is a close relative of the kākāpō.

#

The rockhopper penguin has two crests of bright yellow feathers on its head.

#

The chinstrap (bearded) penguin can be identified by the thin black band at the base of its head.

#

Hoopoes have a prominent fan-like crest.

#

Hornbills, like this ground hornbill, are the closest relatives of hoopoes.

#

Rheas are a kind of large flightless birds called ratites, and are the only ones known from South America.

#

**Cassowaries **are another kind of ratite, with three species (Southern and Dwarf shown here) known from New Guinea and Australia.

I posted about your gallery in Daily Theme today, and since I also wanted to hit the theme, I included a bird no longer with us...the pterodactyl.

Skimmers have a noticeably shorter upper beak than their lower beaks, which they use to "skim" the water surface when looking for food.
