Recent updates have introduced a significant memory leak. Previously, each tab consumed around 110mb-350MB of memory. Now, after receiving 1-2 messages, memory usage exceeds 1.6GB-5gb, causing the browser to freeze and eventually crash due to running out of memory.

Steps to reproduce:

Use chapgpt 4o in chrome browser for a few responses

Expected result:

Working correct, never over 1gb memory usage as previous

Actual result:

over 2GB+ memory causing browser tab to eventually crash for running out of memory

Reporting the same issue. Experiencing extreme lag when I ask ChatGPT anything, and memory usage is sitting at 2-3GB per page. It often crashes and is completely unusable. I've tried turning Memory off, but that didn't do anything.

It's been two days now. It's on Reddit and community.openai.com. The Mac app seems to be the only one not experiencing this issue.

Yeah, have same issue. Especially in long conversations. One message, 50 seconds, and memory consumption sky rocketing up to 3-4-5GB!
Tested on different accounts (paid/free/unlogged), different browsers (Chrome/Firefox), different laptops (both Windows) and different networks.

chatgpt tabs using 4+GB of RAM and 10-20% of my CPU while being completely and utterly useless.

The memory leak isn't new, well at least i've never received it until a couple of days ago. Gpt3 is useless, gpt4 isnt any better, forced to goto 4o and it breaks, im running 32gb ram.. how on earth can it use all of it.. I think the devs needs to hand in their resignation, and find devs that will actually listen to the community and fix the problems, rather than create new ones

is this problem mainly affecting people using code interpreter? it seems that ChatGPT 4o works ok so long as I'm not writing code with it (which i need to be).

quick workaround is to duplicat the tab and let it load until prompt is finished, kill the stuck one

that's nothing new for me, i mostly use it for writing faster code and maybe some API references which i can't be bother to check manually, and in the end i still have to check it manually since this AI thing is just not there yet

This has an annoying combo, as well, that when you refresh the tab it'll force you to regenerate the partial prompt, even if you don't need it anymore. No cancel or skip, can't ignore it -- can't type anything. You MUST regenerate, even if you don't want to. ( #1245986983595999262 message )

Additionally: This also happens in 4 -- not just 4o.

Strangely, I never saw it happen in mobile or my crappy laptop. It's almost as if it knows that I have a decent amount of cpu/ram and offloading resources to client-side, instead 🤔 ~~#conspiracy-theory~~

Memory leak is probably due to React Virtual DOM managment

I'm not sure about others experience, but I was using Chrome and after tgetting the Out of Memory error just now, I switched to complete my task in Chat GPT on Opera and it is flying through the responses... No issues with memory or response time at all...

actually, I might need to take that back. IT was working fine for a while there but starting to see it again. Stopping mid response, One thing I do notice though, if I hit refresh, the entire response is there. In chrome I didnt get that, it would start trying to provide the entire response from scratch again, inevitebly stopping mid sentence in an endless frustrating loop..

for me it's working fine for now, a bit laggy sometimes but at least I don't see the page crashing like it was doing on Chrome so I'll keep using Opera for a bit and see.

I'm having a hard time reproducing this issue in Safari. Actually I've had a pinned tab for ChatGPT for over a year now and I've never had it leak memory or crash from lack of memory. I was wondering is the problem solved?
